Jolie dazzles Venice festival with biopic on opera legend
Tumblr media
Angelina Jolie arrives for the premiere of the film “Maria” on Aug. 29 at the Venice film festival.
For Angelina Jolie, portraying the famed opera singer Maria Callas meant more to her than she can put into words.
“I felt such a privilege to feel like I got to know this woman and got to be inside her skin a moment. I really care for her deeply,” Jolie said a few hours before the film’s world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
“I think I’ll carry that like a friend.”
Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín called on Jolie to take on the role as the legendary soprano in “Maria,” which was recently acquired by Netflix for distribution.
The film focuses on the final week of her life in 1977 in Paris.
She is deeply isolated, with only her butler (Pierfrancesco Favino) and housemaid (Alba Rohrwacher) looking after her — concerned about her health, the drugs and the devastating effects of her diminished voice.
Larraín continues to explore the lives of very famous women with tragic narratives attached to them.
Tumblr media
In 2016, he came to the festival with his Jackie Kennedy portrait, “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman as the first lady in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination.
In 2021, he returned with Kristen Stewart playing Princess Diana as she considered divorce over the Christmas holiday in “Spencer.”
Both films earned their lead actors Oscar nominations.
“Maria” is the conclusion to this trilogy of historical women, though Callas may be a bit less known to younger generations who weren’t around for the headlines and scandals.
Born Maria Kalogeropoulos to Greek parents in New York, the singer made her professional debut in Athens as a 17-year-old.
During her brief life she became one of the greatest opera singers of all time with her unparalleled voice and stage presence.
But the accolades also came with the intense scrutiny of her life in the public eye, whether it was her exacting demands and “diva” behavior, her weight or her romantic life.
Callas famously had a relationship with shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis who left her for Jackie Kennedy.
She died in Paris at age 53 after a heart attack.
“When I put her big glasses on and her Greek hair, and I sat in my little robe as an older lady, I felt a (Maria) that felt like the private (Maria) that the world didn’t know,” Jolie said.
“And I connected to her first and kind of loved her.”
Jolie trained for nearly seven months to prepare for the role.
The singing in the film is a blend of actor and the real thing.
“My first days, (Larraín) was very good to me in that we started in a more intimate first with very few crew members,” Jolie said.
“And we ended at La Scala with everyone. So I had a little time to get my nerve. But this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I was terrified.” Larraín said it was “the only way to do it.”
“Opera requires a very particular style of singing — in the pitch, the color, the breathing, the posture,” he said.
“Sometimes it’s a tiny bit of Angie and mostly Maria and then sometimes it’s more, but it’s always there. We needed to do that because it’s the only way that she could properly prepare the character, play it right and then create the right illusion.”
Jolie has twice been nominated for acting Oscars.
She won for her supporting role in “Girl, Interrupted,” and was last nominated for her leading role in Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling.”
Netflix has not announced specific release plans for “Maria,” but Jolie’s performance already has awards buzz.
In a news conference at Venice, Jolie was asked if there were surprising ways she related to Callas.
“There’s a lot I won’t say in this room that you probably know, or assume,” Jolie said.
But, she feels they do both share a softness and a vulnerability. It’s been three years since Angelina Jolie appeared in a movie, though she’s been making a retreat from stardom for a lot longer than that, pulling back pieces of herself from the public sphere as well as from the persona she projects onscreen.
Gone are the days of the blood-vial-wearing wild child or the bombshell whose chemistry with co-star Brad Pitt in Mr. & Mrs. Smith made their coupling up feel inevitable.
As a celebrity, she has stripped sex from her image entirely, emphasizing instead her identity as a filmmaker, a human-rights activist, and a mother of six.
As an actor, she has voiced a tiger in the Kung Fu Panda franchise as often as she’s actually appeared onscreen over the past decade, and in the live-action films she has taken on, her roles have increasingly been defined by her character’s aloof beauty and elegant suffering.
I can’t begrudge Jolie her desire to armor up and put more layers between herself and a public that’s been ingesting the intimate details of her life since she was scarcely old enough to legally drink.
But I also can’t deny that I’ve found this Madonna-martyr phase of her career less than compelling.
At her best, Jolie is thrilling, a talent capable of bursting into the frame and making you believe she’s about to devour the world whole.
In her more recent roles, even when running headlong through a raging forest fire, she feels only half there.

Maria Callas, voce senza tempo
Tumblr media
Padres: George Kalogeropoulos y Evangelia Dimitriadis
Cónyuges: Giovanni Battista Meneghini 1949-1959)
Pareja: Aristóteles Onassis (1959-1968)
Nombre: Maria Anna Cecilia Sofia Kalogeropoulos
Apodo: La Divina
Altura: 1,70 m

In programma "Ove m'inoltro?... Casta diva... INFO E BIGLIETTI: Tavola rotonda > ingresso libero Concerto > Biglietti Intero € 20,00; Ridotto soci WKO € 15,00; Under 26 € 5,00; Under 12 € 1,00. So, you don’t know what had happened? News avoidance in a non-democracy, is it selfishness or self-preservation?
So, you don’t know what had happened? News avoidance in a non-democracy, is it selfishness or self-preservation?
News avoidance have been increasing on world-wide scale due to several reasons such as low trust in news providers, dissatisfaction with certain governments’ decisions, and a general feeling of powerlessness (Newman et al., 2019). This may also lead to low following and interaction with news pages websites or social media pages. Although it seems harder said than done in the age of digital media, it is fairly easy to dodge the news nowadays in spite of our phones being practically glued to our bodies. In fact, it can be managed to steer clear from political talk If you do not follow news pages, your friends don’t post about it and the algorithm makes sure you don’t see them as it learns your preferences (Amsalem & Zoizner, 2022). These explanations may apply profoundly in countries with authoritarian governments however, in an amplified manner.
News media can affect their consumers in various psychological ways especially under dictatorial systems. It has been reported that the news can increase feelings of stress and anxiety consequent to stances of empathy, political pessimism, and optimism (McNaughton-Cassill, 2007). Subsequently in a non-democracy, individuals with high level of understanding of their political realities or injustices might be in greater dangers of these potential emotional consequences. Combined with feelings of helplessness towards their social reality and considering the consequences of any government opposing engagement in heavily censored spaces, may encourage people to halt any political interest or dialogue and transform into news avoiders.
News avoidance can be attributed to lack of trust in government operated news media with little to no existence of independent media sources in authoritarian countries. For instance, thousands of propagated tweets have been used between 2015 to 2021 to twist truths and flood the internet with disinformation to distort international inquiries and efforts in the Syrian conflict. Similarly, framing of news was heavily utilized in China during the Arab Spring to change the narrative and strengthen the leadership and party’s authority via political pages and forums (Tang & Huhe, 2014). Propagated news feed has been used in multiple countries through digital and traditional media which is a core driver for dropping trust in news. Nonetheless, it is not exclusive to authoritarian systems as countries with governments democratically elected use news media to reassert their power and prevent opposition due to their authoritarian-leaning administrations (Walker & Orttung, 2014). This also may result in higher percentages of news avoiding behaviors in such countries.

So shunning news media and not following their pages might inspire news avoiders to feel spared from these hypothetical risks. Although this approach could indicate poor coping mechanisms with regards to negative emotions stemming from realities reported in the news. It may also seem like a sound practice to evade the news or engage in political conversations online or offline out of distrust in news media, however, to embrace the illusion of safety and comfort provided by lack of awareness on an individual level can have immense effects on the future societal level.

In this episode, we’re taking a closer look at the Greek media landscape. We’ll be asking why the public has little trust in the country’s media and examining what difficulties a local independent outlet faces as it tries to upset the established pattern of news coverage.
Our producer, Phoebe Fronista, speaks to MacroPolis features writer Georgia Nakou regarding the controversial 20-million-euro package provided by the Greek government to a variety of media outlets as part of the coronavirus campaign.
She also catches up with Dimitris Xenakis, the co-founder of Inside Story – a subscription-based investigative and long form journalism site in Athens - to get an idea of the obstacles his organisation has to overcome.
Our host, Nick Malkoutzis, has a discussion with Antonis Kalogeropoulos, a Communication and Media Lecturer at the University of Liverpool. Antonis was a research partner for annual Digital News Report published by the Reuters Institute in July. The report suggests that just 28 percent of Greeks trust most news most of the time, which was one of the lowest figures among the 40 countries surveyed.

MARIA CALLAS.. Evde misafirlere yemekli davet verilir. Kadın, Hasan’a gülümseyerek bakar, “Arya söyleyen o küçük kız bendim” der. İşte o küçük kız; dünyaca ünlü Soprano Maria CALLAS’tır. (Anna Maria Cecilia Sofia Kalogeropoulos) Hasan Subaşıoğlu, Körfez restoranın sahibi, Erman Aras’ın eşi Filiz Aras’ın babasıdır.........
