Kamaʻāina E Komo Mai Welcome Home, Kamaʻāina

🌺Happy AAPI Month!🌺 I've had this piece in mind since I visited home last year. Among the chaos of the airport's baggage claim and shuffling between impatience, a screen greets each guest in yellow text, saying those very words: "To our returning Kamaʻāina, welcome home." My heart ached when I had to leave, leading me to draw this with a lot of plant life and flowers from my nostalgia. Now I'm back on my island, reuniting with my family, and embracing my culture - I'm Kānaka Maoli and couldn't be more grateful to be home.

Going on almost 8 months of no smoking/vaping/nicotine :) I’m playing French horn in my local wind ensemble, going for walks, climbed up the hiking equivalent of 73 flights of stairs in the redwoods according to my phone, feeling a lot calmer and happier each day, going to do a bunch of boogie boarding again once the water warms up, the boy and I might even take some surf lessons together (my grandmas friend might give me kamaaina rate lol), school is so hard and I’m so lazy and impatient and just want to be done and have a degree already, but I’m motivated and passionate about what I’m learning and going to get through this, so basically this is all to say….I had a glass of soju and I’m really happy with how my life is going :) it’s so hard sometimes, and so annoying other times, and often very confusing, and so very busy in some moments that I want to just curl up and shut out the world, but I love it and im figuring it out, and I have someone who’s here to cheer me on and figure it out with me :)

Now, the big question: Was it better or worse than the last one? It’s hard for me to answer that fully because I really didn’t get a chance to walk around and see everything.

One crucial factor was the volleyball event in the other room of the convention center which took all the parking. (when we arrived at 7:15a it looked 3/4 full!) I worry about the future if the Convention Center double/triple books events, there will be a severe lack of parking, especially for vendors who need parking spaces to load and unload. I’m going to get anxiety about how early we need to leave Mililani to ensure a parking space 😣 (Granted they did provide overflow parking at Ala Mona, but for vendors- little bit tricky that way)

The UH graduation that day was also a big factor as many people left early or never came because of that.

There were many great things going on: R/C racetrack, raffle prizes, concession stand, LED photo wall, cosplay contest, Toys for Tots toy drive, and more!

Where I was, the music was manageable. Mahalo, Elmer! I hope it was okay for everyone else.

Since everything was on one floor, I couldn’t see the stage from where I was. But I heard the dancing and the fashion show, etc.

From what I saw, it seemed like everyone was having a good time. I know it was a winter theme, but I was amazed to see how many people wore Santa hats and coats.

For me, I see a lot of improvements and see growth for upcoming events.

I’m looking forward to the next one 🙂

計算された非常に興味深い一枚。

To all kama'aina, some of these protestors will travel to another state, so definitely out of their county and so definitely not their lockdown area. Without masks. Without social distancing. They do not care about protecting others. So all you kama'aina, when you protest that "we need to open the economy again", since Hawaii's economy is heavily dependent on tourism, you're really saying that you want visitors to be allowed to travel here. And when these mainland protestor people with this selfish mindset of not protecting even their own neighbors, do you think they'll think to protect our aina?! We already see how many of even the few visitors we do have are so completely uncaring, selfish, and think they're entitled, that they break mandatory quarantine. Whatever you think of the governor and the county mayors, all us kama'aina did what we needed to do, we social distanced and quarantined to keep our infection rate to one of the lowest in the country. Once you let these entitled-mindset people in, that thrown out the window. We kama'aina will be the ones getting sick. Our kupuna will be the ones dying.

All because you protest wearing a mask and "need to open the economy."

We are lucky here in Hawaii. We have a huge ocean isolating us from the rest of the world. But we also have a huge ocean protecting us from the rest of the world. But not if you force us to let tourists in without a PROVEN and effective vaccine and treatment. We can open up...carefully...thoughtfully. Local business open for local residents first, yes. Tourists when we have vaccines and treatments. But until then, sorry, tourists need to quarantine or not come at all. Yes that hurts some of our local economy, a major part of our economy, and even the company I work for directly deals with people in the tourism industry. We all are affected when tourism is down. But we NEED, we MUST, keep our infections down. And the only way we can do that at this moment is requiring quarantine for anyone traveling into Hawaii to keep the virus from spreading here. Both visitor and kama'aina.

We quarantined for rabies. We will quarantine for this. Am I calling you a dog? Only if you act like an animal and be too selfish to protect your neighbors and kupuna.

Until we have a vaccine and treatment, that means masks, social distancing, and quarantines. We're all dealing with it calmly like adults because we know we must. Why aren't you?
