You’ve heard rumors about the big bad wolf named Calum Hood. You’ve heard how hard and cold his stare is, that his jawline is sharp as glass and he towers over nearly everybody around him, minus the males in his pack. 

You’re from a neighboring pack,and have heard about the notorious Calum Hood for most of your adult life. Usually from the females in your pack that have tried and failed repeatedly to get into his good graces. 

It’s the first eve of Lupercalia, a celebration of sexual awakenings and the warding off of infertility. This is your first time attending one with your pack, and the whole time your members have talked nothing of Calum Hood. You’ve heard so much about him you don’t even want to lay eyes on the man. 

February 13, night one consists of pack mingling, getting the feel of each other and to hopefully be paired up with someone for the remainder of the festival. 

“I’m going to get Imprinted tonight by Hood,” you friend says while you’re walking to the large house that belongs to Alpha leader, Ashton Irwin. 

“And how are you going to do that?” you snicker adjusting the strap of your royal purple halter top. “You can’t make it happen.”

“We’re mates, I know it,” she sighs.

You shake your head. Lupercalia, you’ve also heard, makes people very lustful. And that only intensifies if you have the werewolf gene in you, the innate desire to mate and make babies is increased by the thousands. 

You’re a little nervous when you step into the house, it’s loud and you can smell the sexual pheromones radiating off of every wolf within the household. It shocked you and your friend grinned maliciously and pulled you through the crowd of other pack members. 

It made you uneasy, feeling all these urges around you, hearing the racing hearts and seeing couples paired off on any surface practically fornicating right then and there. It made your head spin. 

Wasn’t this just supposed to be like a cocktail party with awkward small chat? 

Your friend is plucked away from you by a tall woman with long golden hair, your friend shot you a wink before following her upstairs. Completely shocked, you run out into the cool night air, the crispness of it cleared your nose of all the sexual chaos you just walked through. 

“What’s a cute Beta like you doing out here?” a deep raspy voice asks to your right. You nearly jump out of your skin, an automatic snarl escapes you. “You couldn’t sense I was here?” the male chuckles and you look closer into the darkness. 

“My senses were a little overridden from what’s happening inside,” you sniff and plant your feet. Now that you’re aware of his presence, the hairs on the back of your neck stand up because this is an Alpha. Not your Alpha, but the respectful fear is still there. 

“Yeah, they’re like wild animals in there,” he snorts and take a step closer until you can feel the warmth radiating off him. “First Lupercalia, huh?”

“How do you know?”

“Because you’re out here,” another step forward until the toes of his boots are against your own ankle boots, “instead of in there acting like a sex heathen.”

“Why are you out here then, Alpha?” you counteract. You’re trying to look into his eyes, but the blue black of the night sky only shows him in shadows. “I’ve heard it’s like a frenzy for you.”

“I don’t like all that nonsense, Beta.” You can hear the grin in his voice. 

“My name’s not Beta.”

“And mine’s not Alpha, sweetheart. What is your name?”

“Y/N.”

“I’m Calum,” he states and your breath hitches which doesn’t go unnoticed by him. “I take it you’ve been told about me?”

“Just--”

A string of lights from up above suddenly blink on up above as someone giggles from the top part of the house. Then you look into Calum’s eyes and you’re transfixed. His eyes widen as he takes you in as well, both of you feeling the same unknown yet explicitly charged feeling. 

In his eyes you saw lines of gold, you saw all the answers you could have ever hoped for and then some. Your heart hummed and you felt the insatiable desire to be closer to him in every way possible, intimately, mentally, sexually. You wanted it all.

“Let’s get out of here,” Calum says. His voice is a lot gruffer and you can hear the authority of his Alpha blood but to you it’s not so much of a command, it’s more of a shared thought that you hadn’t voiced yet. 

You take his hand all too willingly and he leads you to an expensive looking mustang. You don’t know what make or year but it’s black, sleek, shiny and it looks fast. 

As soon as the both of you are in this enclosed space, the lust rolls off him in waves and your eyes lock. 

“How fast does this go?” you ask breathlessly buckling up.

“Fast enough, baby. I don’t live far.” 

The sports car roars to life, the engine hums your entire body and you can’t help the quiet whimper you make. You bite your lip, squeezing your thighs together as you feel a burning heat pool between them. Your grip on the door tightens as Calum races down the road. 

The tires squeal so hard you smell rubber and in a flash you and Calum are in his house. He’s ripped your clothes to shreds, lips hot and forceful on your own. You melt against him, body craving more and more of his touch and his hot lips on your skin. 

You’re in his arms and you feel his hard on against your core. You can’t remember if you took his clothes off or if he did but you’re glad there’s no barriers between you. 

Without warning, Calum slides into you effortlessly, your fingernails dig into his biceps from the sudden stretch and push of pleasure he gave you. Calum growls at the sensation and begins to thrust. It’s quick and needy, you’re moaning into his hot neck. His scent is making you lightheaded and each thrust makes your eyes roll back. 

It isn’t long until you’re both coming, moans and growls echoing off his walls until his hips slow to a steady pulse. You rest your head against the wall trying to gather your breathing and then Calum’s hand slides to your throat. His fingers clutch your jaw so you’re looking directly at him. 

It pleases you that he’s out of breath as well, there’s a slight sheen of sweat on his forehead and his eyes are ablaze with lust. 

“You know what this means, right?” he pants.

“We’re mates,” you lick your lips and try to swallow against the pressure of his hand on your throat. It’s not rough, but it’s apparent enough that it excites you. 

“And we aren’t leaving this house for the next three days, sweetheart,” he smiles devilishly before kissing you, his tongue slipping into your mouth and it makes you moan.

still motoring my way through the artemis fowl audiobooks.

i’m most of the way through the 4th one now, and unfortunately, they’ve kept the same narrator. i’m trying not to cringe every time the guy does opal’s voice, which he has decided for some reason should have a painfully stereotypical “asian” accent, but it’s difficult when she’s such a big part of the story.

still, i’m remembering how much i enjoyed these books when i was a teenager, and i’m enjoying rediscovering things i’d forgotten. i’m finding that as the series chugs along, i’ve forgotten more and more of it, but i guess that’s only natural. i read and reread the first three books at least a dozen times (for awhile, they were my go-to road trip/waiting room/family gathering/downtime at school books, so i had committed most of the text to memory). the fourth and fifth i think i read twice, and after that, i’m not even 100% sure i got through the end of the last book. it’ll be wild to get to a point in the series where i basically remember nothing.

i admit, i’m a little apprehensive. i know things get more and more bizarre in each book, and while i’m excited to relive the utter bonkers-ness of it all, i’m also slightly afraid that i won’t enjoy it as much as i want to. the first three books made such a wonderful, cohesive story that it’s hard for me to continue past it, even though i was (and still am) thrilled that the series didn’t end as a trilogy. when viewed as a trilogy, the story is relatively tight and moderately serious, if terribly tongue-in-cheek. but viewed as an 8-book series, it becomes a much sillier beast, and i’m weirdly afraid that revisiting it now will sour the whole series for me a little.

then again, the hannibal books ended on a similarly bizarre note, and i loved the hell out of them. i’ve been comparing the two series in my head, though it sounds weird to actually say that i find them similar. i mean, artemis is decidedly a good kid. eventually, anyway. and hannibal lecter is...well. he sure is Something, all right.

but they have that same smug genius to them that would be insufferable if it wasn’t handled so well (though i guess some would argue that hannibal did get a bit insufferable near the end, there), and their authors are similarly enamoured with them as characters. 

and storyline-wise, i still love the end of hannibal’s story. like i know that prequel came out years after the story officially concluded, but i mean like the end of hannibal’s chronological story was just the finest of crackfic, and it was the CANON end to the story! i have to admire that kind of guts, you know?

anyway. nobody cares, i know, so i’ll put most of this under a cut. but i feel like documenting my listening journey anyway.

if only because being sick with this disgusting cold is quite demoralizing, and i’m trying to keep my spirits up. i’d be making kandi, but i don’t want to have to disinfect everything after i make it, and i’ve also got a killer sinus headache, so focusing on anything visually right now is rather difficult. i’m actually wearing sunglasses in a darkened room while typing this, lol. it doesn’t totally banish the headache, but it makes it manageable for short periods of time.

and now, to lie back down and (probably) finish off the rest of this book before i have to go back to work in the morning.
