Chapter One: Be Safe, Jagiya
Summary: Kang Hyunyul has had a good life since he left the Jindo gang. But when he finds out that Do Jin is going to be temporarily released, he's stressed and the return of an old flame triggers familiar feelings and with them, the old memories of the only real thing of his complicated past.
All while she was saving him, literally putting her life on the line.
Chapter Summary: Kang Hyunyul and Dang Sujin get news of Do Jin being released temporarily, one is indifferent and the other, terrified.
Warnings: Not proofread, Some mature language, violence, angst, tell me if I should add anything.
A/N: I love him, your honor.
Tumblr media
As he and his friends were jamming to their chosen songs, Kang Hyunyul couldn't help but feel content. He loved what he did. The bass gave him life and after the song ended, he cheered with the others, happy to have friends that actually cared for him.
Hey. Do Jin will be discharged temporarily soon. You better watch your six at night. Or you might get stabbed from behind.
He shook the words out of his mind. The moment he'd heard them, he'd decided that he wouldn't let them eat him up. But he couldn't help but worry if Do Jin would target his friends too. Should he tell them?
He smiled with a sigh. Nahh. It'd be better if they didn't know. They'd worry unnecessarily. He'd figure it out, he decided, as he walked down the streets to his home.
He could feel someone following him. They'd been doing it for some time now. He was tensed, but relieved at the same time. Even if Do Jin killed him, he'd be the only one to die. Everyone else in his life would be alright.
He turned the corner into an alleyway, waiting for them to come behind him. When they finally did, he threw them up against wall, pinning an arm behind their back and an arm against their neck, only to find familiar earthy brown eyes staring back at him with no fear in them.
"Hey, Hyunyul. Glad to know you still remember our secret makeout spot," she said.
He immediately looked around and found that she was right. He had somehow cornered them both into an alley that he used to wait to go to. Then, he turned his head back to the woman pinned against the wall. She was still the same old, except that she had grown out her hair. Her black hair, which usually used to be nowhere near her shoulders were flowing freely now. Her eyes had dark circles under them and she looked more tired than usual.
Hyunyul felt a distinct urge, and itching throughout his arms, from his shoulders to his fingers. He wanted to hug her, to run his fingers through her hair, to tell her she looked pretty in long hair, to ask why she was tired. But mostly, just one question. Something that had been like a code to relax for the both of them. The question that initiated all the sweet moments between them.
Are you okay?
"Sujin. What're you doing here?" he asked instead, not wanting to attach himself to her again. She strained against his hold a bit and chuckled.
"Damn. I just remembered that when you're actually pinned against the wall with a hand choking you, it's kinda uncomfortable. Still hot, though. No wonder I enjoyed it."
Hyunyul couldn't help it. He huffed out a laugh. Of all the things to like about her, he'd liked her humor the most. He enjoyed the affections of the girls at school, but they could get annoying at times.
Sujin on the other hand, was crass and refreshing. A memory of them flashed in his mind, covered by the sheets on her bed, laughing, unable to stay away from each other.
He released her and took a few steps away from her. The speed at which his walls were going down scared him.
Sujin rubbed her wrist, her heart aching as he stepped away. He rubbed the back of his neck and asked, "What're you doing here?"
She sighed, leaning back against the wall and asked, "Did you hear about Do Jin?"
He nodded with a shrug. For anyone else, it would've been indifference and fearlessness, but she could see it in his tensed shoulders and in the furrow of his eyebrows. He was as stressed.
"Just... be careful, alright? Don't stay out if you don't need to," she said, stuffing her hands in her big hoodie pockets, trying to look casual.
"I don't need you to tell me what I need to do. I can protect myself," Hyunyul snapped. She sighed again and said, "I know that better than anyone Yul, but still. Page me if you're in trouble."
He scoffed and looked at her with something that resembled hatred. She felt her shoulders tense as her stepdad's face flashed in her mind. He always looked at her that way.
"Did you leave the gang?" he asked. She nodded immediately, looking into his dark eyes. He stared at her and shook his head in disappointment, starting to walk away.
Sujin walked forward and caught his arm. "I'm serious," she said, trying to hide the desperation in her voice. "I left."
"Let me go. I have stuff to do," he said, while keeping his eyes in front.
"Jagiya-" she started, but before she could finish the sentence, he turned and threw her against the wall again, his eyes showing his pain and anger.
"Don't call me that," he said through gritted teeth. "And don't follow me again."
With that, he let go of her and walked away leaving her to stare after him. She sighed again as she started walking back home.
"He's not gonna listen to me, is he?" she murmured under her breath.
His question repeated itself in her mind.
Did you leave the gang?
Sujin had left soon after Hyunyul had, but the prospect of rejoining was still on the table only because Do Jin had taken a bit of a liking to her. It was tempting and she needed the money.
But going back to doing all those bad things... it just didn't sit right with her. And she didn't know if her situation was enough to convince herself to steal from kids her age.
As she passed the cafe near her house, she heard someone call out her name.
She turned and saw a young man running towards her. He whipped out his card. She immediately turned alert as it was a cop.
"My name is Hwang Yojun. I have a deal for you."
Sujin looked around, just in case it was a trap. "This is unofficial. My colleagues don't know about this."
She just stared at him suspiciously in reply. He sighed and said, "Look, if you do this and we're successful in turning Do Jin in for a long time, your crimes will be off the record."
Her lips parted in surprise and she thought about. After a minute, she made up her mind and jerked her head toward the cafe.
"Alright, then. What do I gotta do?"

Chapter Seven: I've Lived Before, Jagiya
Summary: Kang Hyunyul has had a good life since he left the Jindo gang. But when he finds out that Do Jin is going to be temporarily released, he's stressed and the return of an old flame triggers familiar feelings and with them, the old memories of the only real thing of his complicated past.
All while she was saving his life, literally putting her life on the line.
Chapter Summary: Sujin and Hyunyul find themselves in a similar situation, only this time, it's way earlier.
Warnings: Angst, mentions of violence, mention of blood and stuff, makeout scene, tell me if I missed something A/N: Alright, I want theories. What do y'all think the code means?
Tumblr media
A stretcher.
Hospital.
Hyunyul leaning over Sujin in panic, begging her to be alright as the doctors took her to some operating room, his hand clutched in hers.
Same scene. Same cause. Only the year was different.
It's too similar.
It was the only thing she could think of as darkness clouded her vision and her hand loosened around his.
And it was the only thing they could think of as he was told to stay back and wait, having to feel her hand slide out of his.
It's all the same.
Earlier that day.
"What's going on with you these days?" Yojun asked as she wiped a table clean in the evening. The afternoon rush had just died down, leaving them an hour or two to rest.
"Nothing," she said, even as her heart fluttered. "Why?"
"You have the stupidest smile on your face," he said suspiciously. "Are you seeing someone?"
"Maybe," she teased, shrugging a shoulder just to rile him up. In her periphery, she saw him jolt and shuffle to follow her as she worked.
"Who is it? What's his name? Where's he from? Did you look into him-" he batted a hand with a firm shake of his head. "Doesn't matter, I'll look into him anyway."
"Gosh, I was just joking," she said with a chuckle. Yojun looked at her with a pointed finger.
"You better tell me when that joke turns true," he said. "People aren't trustable these days."
"In that case, I should be looking into you too," she muttered. "You're dating my friend."
He slapped a hand on his chest, feigning offense. "You've known me longer than you've known her."
"So? She's still my friend."
"You're impossible."
"That's why you love me."
"Can't deny that," he said with a sigh.
She smiled as she went into the kitchen to deposit the dirty dishes into the sink. When she came out, Kyungmi was talking to Yojun all, smiles and blushes.
When she noticed Sujin, she turned, her face all red. "But then, who's the guy you've been hanging out with, then?" She asked, obviously having heard the previous conversation.
"He's just a friend," she said, earning a side eye from the older woman.
"Yeah, okay," she said, having a silent conversation with Yojun.
Had it only been a year since they started dating? They were already acting like a married couple.
She'd been able to pay off the debt somehow. She knew that Hyunyul was only helping her because he felt guilty about what happened when they were young.
But she wasn't so sure anymore. He'd been asking to hang out with her even after that.
On one hand, she was cautious, she was careful about opening up around him. But on the other hand, her heart got faster every time she thought about him.
So, basically... she wasn't cautious at all. But she was still confused why he called her now and then, asking her if she was free.
Her phone rang at the moment, and she got it out to see his name.
"Hey, are you free right now?" He asked, his voice soft as it filtered through the speaker.
"I guess," she said, looking around at the empty spaces. "For an hour, at least."
"Nice," he said enthusiastically. "I've been needing the coffee."
And just like that, they both were sitting at a table, drinking their coffee.
Hyunyul liked the silence he had with Sujin. He'd been craving it every time he was at work.
Though, it wasn't just the silence he craved.
He craved her.
Her company. Her food. The conversations. Just her, in all her glory.
Her hair had gotten longer, now reaching till her upper back. His own hair was reaching till his neck, just blindly following whatever trend was going on at the moment. The way his barber styled it was nice though.
Her sigh brought his attention back to her. He followed her gaze to the couple at the end. Then, he couldn't help but watch her, as her face lit up, because god help him, that's what her smile did.
Had he somehow missed her so much in the two days he hadn't seen her? So much that he couldn't help but think that she'd somehow gotten prettier?
Nahh, she's been like this since that last payment, remember?
That was true. She'd put up an offer on the coffee that evening. She'd probably been sleeping better since then.
It was when he'd felt that he was in too deep. That he needed to put some distance. For her and for himself.
He couldn't let it play out like last time again. Not this time.
But then, he couldn't stay away either. Every time he decided that he wouldn't meet for a week, it was like his eyes itched from the inside to see her.
Memories flashed through his mind again, the stuff that he had nightmares about.
...
"You played me, didn't you? You used me for my money."
"No! Just listen to me, Jagiya-"
"I've heard enough, Sujin. I don't even know why I trusted you again. It was you who told Dojin it was me, wasn't it?"
...
91221.
"Hey! Get away from her!"
"Sujin! No, no, no, please, no, Sujin, stay with me, okay?"
"Jagiya... I'm sorry..."
...
"You have to stay outside, sir, you can't come in here!"
...
"We tried everything we can, I'm very sorry for your loss..."
...
"Hyunyul," Sujin's firm voice broke into his mind. She was peering at him with concern. He just pasted on a smile and nodded, gulping down his coffee.
Her head tilted in suspicion, but she didn't push further.
He looked at her again, wondering what the numbers meant. She never did tell him.
She was busy dying, you dumb idiot.
He let out a chuckle, even if it was barely funny. And then, with a sigh, he ran a hand through his hair.
He finished his coffee and stood up, wanting to exit, but, he stopped when he felt Sujin grab his wrist. He looked back at her and was surprised to see her so... uncertain.
Hesitant.
"I... wanted to tell you something," she said, her palm getting clammy around his wrist.
They both went up to her house and sat beside each other on the couch, as she fiddled and he waited.
"What is it?" He asked softly after ten minutes went by. Her anxiety only worsened, her knee starting to bounce.
He placed a hand on her knee, prompting her to stare at it, and then at him. And he was caught in the dark depths of her eyes as his breath hitched.
He didn't know who moved first. But someone did, because their lips were joined. Her hand clutched his hair as his hand on her knee went to her other thigh, pulling her on top of him.
It was heavenly, getting to touch her like this again. To get to kiss her like this again. Like they both had the oxygen the other needed to live.
Their hands roamed as their kiss got intense, tongues clashing against each other. Then, it got slow. It got intimate and lazy, the way they'd kiss when they had time, just soft lips devouring each other.
How could he ever think he could stay away from her? He couldn't even think of parting for breath.
When they finally did part to breathe, there was a grin on both their faces. Sujin's was a bit more shy, as she touched her fingertips to her lips in disbelief.
Again, he watched her, as she started to debate internally and gave her a peck on the lips. She looked at him with surprise in her eyes.
"Oh, come on," he whispered against her lips. "Just let it be. Don't ruin it for yourself."
After some more time of just kissing, he started to leave.
It was very reluctant, but it was important. They didn't talk about it, they didn't stop to think just how the dynamic had changed.
They just let it be.
♬♩♪♩ ♩♪♩♬
That night, his phone let out a loud ringtone just as he had started to lull into sleep.
He picked it up, his eyes groggy. At first he didn't really understand the message, but when his mind finally processed it, his blood went cold.
No. No. Not again.
The numbers on the screen were the same as last time.
91221.
He flew out of bed and put on his shirt, running to the door as he tried to call Sujin.
He wasn't going to lose her again.

Chapter Two: I Did Something, Jagiya
Summary: Kang Hyunyul has had a good life since he left the Jindo gang. But when he finds out that Do Jin is going to be temporarily released, he's stressed and the return of an old flame triggers familiar feelings and with them, the old memories of the only real thing of his complicated past.
All while she was saving him, literally putting her life on the line.
Chapter Summary: Sujin is intrigued by the deal offer and makes up her mind.
Warnings: Mentions of drug dealing and gang stuff (irdk how cop stuff works ok), not proofread, lemme know if there's something else to be added.
A/N: There's not much Hyunyul in this sorry. Plus sorry for the late update, school has quite literally been kicking my ass.
Tumblr media
Sujin and Officer Yojun entered the bustling cafe. It was usually crowded at the time in the evening, so it would be easier to talk without worrying about eavesdroppers.
The cafe was a quaint little place which was famous in her neighborhood. As they both walked in and sat on a corner booth, there were waiters and waitresses walking briskly up and down the place, taking orders and serving the customers. A few lights were on as the sun had not set completely, coloring the sky outside in pretty hues of pink.
"What would you like to have?" One of the waitresses asked, a little notepad in one hand and a pen in another.
"Just a black coffee, thank you," he said with a warm smile. The waitress jotted down his order and then turned to Sujin.
"Did you have lunch?" She asked, pointing the pen at her with a worried glare. Sujin nodded, hoping she wouldn't ask what she'd had, because she'd only be whacked over the head.
"Did you actually have something? Or did you just eat an apple and called it lunch?"
She winced and as she'd expected, she got a harsh tap at the back of her head, which made her topple forward in her seat a bit, her hands clasping the side of the table.
"I'll get a coffee and three cheese sandwiches. If you don't eat all three of them, I'll stuff it down your throat," she said, looking more like a mother when she was only twenty three years old.
Officer Yojun however, had a grin on his face as he witnessed the exchange. "Your neighborhood must really care about you, huh?" He asked when the waitress had walked away, grumbling about her friend not eating properly.
Sujin nodded with a smile and said, "They're all my mother and I have had for a long time."
Yojun nodded in understanding too. "I get it. Even in my neighborhood, they used to be very particular about me and my family. It's good to have that."
Sujin sighed and wringed her wrists on the table. "So, you said you have a deal for me?"
Yojun nodded again and said, "I think Do Jin is going to start dealing drugs soon. We need to catch him before he starts. We don't need another drug dealer in these streets."
Sujin's eyebrows furrowed as she fiddled with her hair in thought. "So you're saying that I become your informant," She said, more of a statement than a question. He sighed and she could see his shoulders tense as he leaned back into the brown seat.
“I can go a different way about this, so think about it very well. Do what you think is best for you,” he said, his expression and tone very serious. She got a good look at him for the first time. He was a guy with dark brown hair and light brown eyes, eyes that looked like they always held good natured mischief in them to hide something sad.
She drummed her fingers on the table, her leg jiggling. "What would I get?" she asked.
He grinned and placed a bundle of money on the table. Sujin back straightened up immediately, her eyes widening.
"You can't be serious, right?" she asked. "I am completely serious," he said.
She immediately made up her mind. There wasn't any big harm that was going to be caused by it. She'd only be helping the police with catching some criminals.
My salary added to the money from this deal would surely help with Mom's treatment.
She swallowed and said, "Okay. I'll do it."
Yojun's face lit up and his grin widened as he pocketed the money.
"Well, then. Keep in touch. Tell me when you rejoin the gang and we'll meet up here every Sunday in the evenings. Deal?"
Sujin smiled and said, "Deal."
*
*
*
A week after the meeting, or mainly, a week of planning, Sujin walked down familiar paths to Do Jin’s house. It seemed ominous, a few street lights lit up, while some were busted and most were blinking, giving a horror-movie-like feeling.
It made her feel queasy and her stomach was in knots. The evening sky, as always, was pretty in its red and yellow hues. She always thought that the sky was a canvas and some choice colors were just splashed onto it.
She wished she could paint like that, or at least like some of her friends, but she couldn’t draw for her life. But her friends always thought she wrote better. Worlds totally different from the one she lived in, but the emotions were the same.
Hyunyul had left because he'd found his passion. The bass guitar. Most people in the gang thought Sujin left because of Hyunyul. And while that was partly a reason, the primary reason was because of her stories. Her characters, her own fictional world.
She reached Do Jin's hiding place and knocked on the door. There were muffled footsteps on the other side, before the door opened.
He smirked and shifted to let her in. She knew he would. She entered the house, which looked like it’d been robbed, things strewn here and there. The ashtray was filled with cigarette butts and a crumpled can of beer lay on the table. The radio was playing softly in the background. He was only wearing a pair of shorts and a black tank top.
“What brings you here?” he asked. Sujin opened her mouth to reply, but found herself unable to start. She kept silent, forming sentences in her head.
“You don’t need to think so much, you know. I’ll take you back. I could use the extra brains, anyway.”
Sujin’s head snapped up. “I’ll come back in one condition,” she blurted out.
Do Jin scoffed and sat on the table in front of her. Cold eyes bored into hers. “And why should I listen to this condition of yours?” he asked, leaning forward a bit. “ You’re the one who left. I could just break your ankles.”
She smirked and leaned closer till their noses were almost touching. She'd worn her prettiest greenish blue floral sundress for a reason. “I know you like me, Do Jin. You could get something out of it.”
His eyes flit between her lips and eyes, grinning and leaning back, supporting his upper body and placing his palms on the table. “Go on, then.”
“I want you to leave Hyunyul alone. "

Chapter Eight: I Know... Jagiya.
Chapter Summary: Sujin is attacked by an old foe and Hyunyul comes to the rescue.
Warnings: Angst, mentions of violence, mention of blood and stuff, makeout scene, tell me if I missed something A/N: Alright, I want theories. What do y'all think the code means?
Tumblr media
Sujin couldn't wipe the smile off her face.
She didn't know if she wanted to either. But it did disappear immediately when she heard a soft click in the door.
Someone had just picked the lock.
The hinges creaked just a little, enough to distract the person, but his footsteps had given him away.
Dojin.
She turned back to her vase which she'd been cleaning. She couldn't believe it. He actually broke out. She quickly typed out a message to Yojun. Just a few words.
Dojin is here.
It would be enough. And then, a message to Hyunyul. The only fault had been time. This time, she'd make sure he was here.
Something that she'd understood was that things had to happen, one way or the other.
She'd tried to save her mother. She'd succeeded. But she ultimately died in an accident. She'd rejected the creditor's son when he'd asked her out, so the bashing that was to be done a lot, lot later, would be done now.
But this time, she was determined to fight back. The last time she'd been heartbroken with no energy or will to fight back.
As soon as he saw her, he lunged at her with a rageful yell, pushing her down to the ground. Both his hands wrapped around her throat. She went for his eyes, which made him shout as she used the opening to push him off of her.
She didn't want a fight. She just wanted to get out. So she ran, and as she tried to get the door unlocked, he pulled her back by her hair.
"I took you back in, Sujin," he growled in her ear, his arm going around her throat. "And betrayal is how you repay me?"
She elbowed him in the gut, but he just let out a whoosh of breath, but overall, there was no effect as his grip tightened.
It's what had happened last time too.
And then she felt a blade's point against her back, just before it broke the skin and went in, making her gasp as her eyes widened.
The adrenaline running throughout her body prevented her from registering the pain. She just knew that she'd been stabbed.
She groaned when he retracted the knife, and through the haze that'd taken over her mind, she heard someone outside. Kicking at the door.
Once. Then twice. And with the third kick, her door banged open, and even though, she should have been more worried about the injury that could be potentially life threatening, she found herself wondering if she'd need a new door, and how much it would cost.
Hyunyul, her mind registered the frenzied face at her doorstep. Hyunyul is here.
In her relief and surprise, she hadn't registered the knife stabbing her a second time.
Then, he shoved her aside, seemingly moved on to his next target.
"Ahhh, nice," he said. "Two traitors killed off with one knife."
"Police! Hands up! No sudden movements!"
Huh. Yojun's here too.
"Sujin," Hyunyul called out, trying to keep his voice as calm and steady as he could. She knew he was panicking though.
"It's okay," she said softly as he put pressure on her wound. "I'll stay awake."
Hyunyul wanted to help. He just didn't know how.
He sat with her in the ambulance, and she was awake but he could see her eyes glaze over at times, her lashes fluttering. Her body and mind were probably begging her to fall asleep, but she always just gave her head a tiny shake, and squeezed his hand, as if to say, "Don't worry, I won't fall asleep."
"You can go to sleep, though," he murmured. "You probably need to."
In the hospital, the doctors took her to an operating room and closed the doors, leaving him outside alone. He almost fell onto one of the chairs outside, one hand clutching the handle tightly.
His mind went back to the past, to the life he'd had before he'd managed to come back. He'd been meaning to tell her for some time.
His hands went into his hair, wanting to pull on it roughly out of frustration.
Please. Not again. Please.

Chapter Four: I'll Keep You Safe, Jagiya
Summary: Kang Hyunyul has had a good life since he left the Jindo gang. But when he finds out that Do Jin is going to be temporarily released, he's stressed and the return of an old flame triggers familiar feelings and with them, the old memories of the only real thing of his complicated past. All while she was saving his life, literally putting her life on the line. Chapter Summary: Sujin confronts Dojin about their deal and Hyunyul makes a final decision. Warning: Violence, implied domestic violence, possessive!Hyunyul, protective!Hyunyul, lemme know if I missed anything. A/N: I'm phenomenally late aren't I? I'm so sorry. If you hung around waiting, thank you. Y'all are real ones.
Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three
Tumblr media
Sujin's mind was a mess. She knew that Dojin wouldn't listen to her. So she'd impulsively sneaked into the school.
She was standing just outside the auditorium when she heard Hyunyul and his friends bickering to just wait for some time.
All of a sudden, there was a big bang, one that made her jump. There was complete and utter silence, her heart beating faster in terror, which then turned into anger.
She stomped out of the school, anger running like lava in her veins. She would've enjoyed the nice sunny weather if she didn't know that her "boyfriend" was just around the corner.
When she turned, there he was, leaning his back against the wall. Her fist automatically swung towards his face, but Dojin caught it and locked it behind her back, pulling her closer.
"To what do I owe the welcome?" He whispered, the almost evil undercurrent audible. Sujin tried to wrench her arm from his grasp, but was only successful in stumbling a few steps back, pulling him with her.
He grinned and let go of her arm, fingers going into her hair instead and pulling her into a kiss. She froze for a few second, but recovered fast and kissed him back in what she hoped seemed like passion.
She still remembered the times he used to do that back when she didn't know the consequences of not accepting Yojun's deal.
Back when she'd been naive enough to think that he actually cared.
Disgust rose in her when she pushed him back gently. She resisted the urge to wipe her lips with the back of her hand as he just stared at her with a smug smile.
"You broke your goddamn promise," she said. He only batted a hand at her and started walking away when she grabbed his shoulder. "We had a deal."
He sighed and looked at her with a deadpan expression. "He ratted me out. What else do you think I should do?"
Sujin growled. "Well, fine then. We're done."
She turned, knowing that he would grab her wrist. "What's that supposed to mean?" He asked.
She shrugged and glanced at him. "You broke our deal. What else do you think I should do?"
She thought he'd just scoff at her mocking voice, but instead he twisted her arm behind her and brought her close, holding her hair in a painful grip. Her heart started beating faster, her vision turning blurry slowly, only focusing on the guy in front of her.
Memories flashed in her mind. The man in them had a different face, but it was enough for the adrenaline to flow in her veins.
"Don't mock me, you hear?" Do Jin said menacingly.
"Let me go," she said, trying to sound as calm as she could. He only tightened his grip on her hair and she could feel the fear starting to spread, her blood turning cold.
"Dojin," an icy voice said behind her. "You should do as she says."
He scoffed, letting her go. "You have the nerve to show up here, you rat bastard?"
"You know, I really didn't want to fight you, Do Jin," he said, smirking. "But, you test my patience."
He pushed Sujin to the side and she fell, her feet not holding enough strength to hold her up at the moment. She looked only at the ground, too panicked to process the events unfolding. Her head was bent down, her hair falling at one side of her face.
The only thing she could hear and feel was her heart beating on a speed that probably wasn't normal.
Hyunyul's hands were balled into fists, knuckles itching to dig into his jaw. But, he was still trying not to get into a fight.
He mostly just wanted to break his teeth for kissing Sujin. He'd gotten out of the school, horrified, knowing that Dojin had a hand in orchestrating it.
He was also angry that he'd do something that could have hurt his friends badly too. Yichan was nowhere to be seen, and they'd just jumped down from the stage to argue with the stage manager when the stage lights above had fallen.
They'd all exited the hall after cleaning up, everyone just thankful no one was hurt. But Hyunyul walked down the nearest pathway, knowing his old friend turned new enemy would be there.
What he hadn't been expecting to see though, was him and Sujin kissing. The visual made him pause, needing to blink once before confirming that he had been seeing what he thought he had been seeing.
He had been seconds away from wrenching her away from him and just beating him to hell and back.
But, he'd stayed back, looking at them talk for a bit. They'd seemed to be fighting, which had given him a feeling of wicked pleasure, already knowing it wasn't going to end well.
But then, he'd pulled her back and his expression turned dark. He'd seen the change it had caused in her. She went from the brave, reckless girl he knew to a scared one. Hyunyul saw her muscles tense up rather than getting even more relaxed like she usually would, and the way she had been trying to get her arm out of his grip, he knew she was absolutely frightened.
It was what had made him walk forward and demand her release.
No one treats my girl like that.
Watching her fall on the ground only raised his anger and he finally reacted, swinging his fist to hit the side of his face. Dojin tried to hit back, but the anger and adrenaline running in his veins, made him flawlessly dodge and hit him in the ways that he knew. He still got hit a few times, but nothing too serious.
It finally got to the point where Dojin seemingly knew that he wouldn't win, so he just started walking away with a glare.
"You'll regret this, Kang Hyunyul," he said, the anger at being humiliated radiating off of him.
When he was finally out of sight, Hyunyul kneeled in front of Sujin, who was still trembling, her breaths shaky and eyes wide. He didn't know what to do, as he'd never seen her like that. She was never the kind to panic or flounder in a situation. She always kept calm and formulated a plan.
He frowned, placing a hand on her shoulder gently. He felt her tense up immediately, which only made his concern and curiosity rise.
"Sujin," he said softly, hoping his gentle voice would bring her back. "Hey, he's gone."
She seemed to snap out of her trance at that as she looked at him, pure fear written all over her face. Then her eyes somehow got even bigger as she touched his torn lip with a thumb, her hand cupping his cheek.
"You're hurt," she said, her voice unusually low. "Why are you hurt?"
"It's nothing, I'm fine," he said. "Are you okay?"
She shrugged a shoulder, looking away from him, blinking rapidly. His hand went from her shoulder to brushing her hair back from her face, the urge to hug her taking over.
"I expected that kinda thing from him, so I'm not surprised," she said casually, causing him to remember that she had rejoined the gang. He retracted his hand fast like he'd been burned.
"So you're both together now," he said, knowing what the answer would be before she nodded. He gave a single nod before he stood up, picking up his bag and slinging it over his shoulder.
The pain that he was feeling was pretty much muted. He didn't want her to see the tears in his eyes, so he showed his back to her.
"Tell him to stay away from me and my friends," he said in a monotone voice. He could feel her gaze burning into his back, but couldn't get himself to look at her.
"Yeah. I'll make sure he doesn't," she said in a soft voice. He nodded and walked away, not daring to look back.
He would never look back.

Chapter Six: Did You Miss Me, Jagiya?
Summary: Kang Hyunyul has had a good life since he left the Jindo gang. But when he finds out that Do Jin is going to be temporarily released, he's stressed and the return of an old flame triggers familiar feelings and with them, the old memories of the only real thing of his complicated past. All while she was saving his life, literally putting her life on the line. Chapter Summary: Hyunyul confronts Sujin after he finds her in a dangerous situation, and decides to help her, but only as a friend.
Warnings: Violence, injuries, tell me in the comments if I missed something A/N: Lmao sorry for the delay, y'all. Thanks for waiting. Also I think I forgot to mention that all characters are now aged up.
Tumblr media
"Look. I told your boss when I started paying back the money, I can only give you what I have. This is what I have right now."
Sujin looked at the two men in front of her with boredom in her eyes, knowing what was coming. Their boss didn't know, nor did she think telling her would make any difference. Especially when it's just in an alleyway behind the cafe.
The man on the right swung his fist, connecting with her face for the third time that month. Being the daughter of a sick, secretly gambling woman doesn't really bring trust to her name, prompting them to come by every week, instead of every month.
She took their kicks and stomps, staying as silent as she could. It made her ashamed, knowing that she couldn't fight back.
"Hey! What the hell do you think you're doing?"
The yell finally made her react, lifting her head to look back at Hyunyul, who was standing proudly with his hands fisted on his sides. He crossed the distance in a few strides, first hauling Sujin up and then looking at the guys furiously. Sujin was a bit surprised to see that he had her stand behind him so that she was protected.
It made her heart do things that seemed forbidden to her.
"She owes our boss money," one of the guys said. "A lot of money."
Hyunyul looked back at her to confirm the fact and Sujin only nodded absentmindedly.
"How much does she owe this month?" He asked. Both of them smirked. "We collect the money weekly."
He just huffed angrily at that, rolling his eyes. "How much does she owe you this week?"
As soon as they gave him the number, he took his wallet out. Sujin immediately grabbed his arm. "What are you doing?"
"Paying them," he replied plainly, getting a few bills out of his wallet.
"No, no. You don't need to waste money like this, put it back."
"I'm not letting you get beat up. So there's two choices. Either I pay them, or I beat them up and have their boss come after me."
Sujin didn't have an argument for that, so just she let go of his arm and stood there awkwardly.
After they were gone, he turned, his eyes scanning her injuries.
"Do you have a first aid kit in your cafe?" He asked.
She shook her head. "There's one in my house. It's fine though, I'll be fine. We can go in and you can order."
He shook his head and burrowed his hands in his pockets. "Your wounds need to be taken care of. And I needed to talk to you anyway, so let's go."
She opened her mouth to argue but he just gave her a glare, prompting her to turn around silently and lead the way.
Her house was just above the cafe, and she heard Hyunyul suck in a breath when he saw the mess inside.
She brought the first aid kit and opened it, but he took it from her and gestured to sit down on the couch.
"I can do it myself," she muttered as she sat down.
"Just stay still," he said, exasperation lacing his voice. He poured some antiseptic into a cotton ball and pressed it to her cheek gently. His other hand framed the other side of her face, his thumb stroking her cheek. He probably didn't even know he was doing it.
It was still nice though, having someone care for her.
He leaned forward a bit to blow on the wound, to soothe the burn, and she found herself inhaling the scent of his shampoo. For some reason, it calmed her down, but also drove her heart to beat like crazy.
He shifted slightly closer, his knees hitting hers, urging her to let out a small ouch! It also made her part her knees so that it didn't happen again.
It reminded her of old days too, when they used to just sit around and bicker. It had usually ended with them in bed.
"So. You've started borrowing money too, huh?" He asked, stopping the slideshow of memories in her mind.
"It's not all on me," she replied. "More than half of it is my mother's debt."
He hummed thoughtfully, sticking a band aid on the wound. "Are you hurt anywhere else?"
"Just bruises," she said, batting a hand.
It had always been like this, hadn't it? They'd be mean to each other, but they'd have each other's backs. And then, if they got into a fight, they'd tend to each other's wounds. And then it'd all repeat.
"Good times," she murmured, her hand going to the spot just below her elbow.
He noticed and immediately clutched her arm, lifting it to see a big cut and giving her a glare.
"What?" she asked softly. He just shook his head in disappointment and continued his work.
Hyunyul sat back after he was done, staring at her face. The question had started to burn in his throat. But he still swallowed it for the second time that day.
"How much money do you owe them?" He asked. She shook her head in protest and waved her arms at him.
"I don't need you to help me, Hyunyul," she said, rubbing the back of her neck.
"You're going to die, if you keep at it like this," he asserted.
"I'll be fine," she countered.
"Damn it. Just accept it, will you? Even the all-knowing, problem-solving Jang Sujin needs help sometimes. There's nothing bad about it."
She gave him a confused look. "What are you doing?"
"What do you mean, what am I doing?" he asked back incredulously.
"No, like... you hate me, right?" she asked casually.
He felt the shock travel in his veins. Where had she gotten that idea?
That night, you idiot.
"No," he insisted. "I was close to, but I don't."
She tilted her head suspiciously, before shaking it, seemingly deciding something.
"Forget it. Whatever. No, thanks."
She stood up and he followed, grabbing her wrist softly and stopping her. She looked at their hands and then at him, her face blank.
"Did you help the police catch Dojin?" he blurted out.
Her expression changed immediately, her earthy brown eyes flashing with surprise, as her mouth opened to spew out what he knew would be a perfect lie.
"Don't lie," he pleaded, the dread and regret that he'd been feeling only increasing tenfold. "The truth. Please."
She sucked in a deep breath, her other hand pushing her hair back. "Yeah."
He cursed under his breath, letting go of her. He was angry at her for nothing. He should've known. Damn it.
"Hey," she called out, giving him a withering look. "Stop. I wanted you to not know."
"Yeah. Yeah, you always do, don't you? Damn it, Sujin. D'you know what Dojin will do if he actually figures it out? He tried to kill me just because he thought I got him caught."
She muttered something under her breath. "Ugh, whatever. I'm tired of hearing that again and again."
"Because it's an actual possibility!" he yelled, unable to hide his panic.
"So what?" she yelled back. "Do you want me to live in fear or something? Because that's just stupid."
That shut Hyunyul up. "If he doesn't break out, he'll just serve his time and then get out," she explained. "If not now, then later. That sword's always going to be hanging over my head. I can't sit around waiting for it to fall."
He let out a frustrated sigh as he pinched the bridge of his nose, knowing she was right. "Fine. At least let me help."
"No. I'm not letting you waste money-"
"I'm not going to be wasting money, Sujin. I'm going to be helping a friend."
Her eyes widened at that as she pressed her lips together, probably to hide a smile.
"Friends?" She asked hopefully.
Hyunyul only shrugged sheepishly. "Y'know. We were friends before... all of it."
And so, they had a deal, but something they didn't know was that things were going to get complicated again.

Chapter Three: I Know What Happens, Jagiya
Summary: Kang Hyunyul has had a good life since he left the Jindo gang. But when he finds out that Do Jin is going to be temporarily released, he's stressed and the return of an old flame triggers familiar feelings and with them, the old memories of the only real thing of his complicated past.
All while she was saving his life, literally putting her life on the line.
Chapter Summary: Sujin makes a deal with Do Jin, while being careful about her secrets. Hyunyul's cautiousness is thrown out of the window when it comes to her.
Warning: Implied physical abuse, Protective!Hyunyul, Do Jin being a very creepy a-hole, angst with no comfort(yet hehe) lemme know if i gotta add something.
A/N: Again, I'm so sorry for posting so late, I've been tired and lazy, plus I wanted to make this chapter perfect too and I've had other things on my mind. Whoever waited, tysm ilysm y'all are literal angels. New people, hello. And also, I switched on my asks, y'all can ask questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Again, thank you for reading. Constructive criticism is always welcome, be sure to tell me how I can improve.
Chapter One Chapter Two
Tumblr media
"Leave Hyunyul alone? Why?" Do Jin asked.
Sujin shrugged, crossing her legs. "I just don't think he's worth it, y'know?" she said nonchalantly, hoping he couldn't hear the rapid beating of her heart, because she surely could. She felt like it was going to beat out her chest and land onto Do Jin's lap.
He looked her up and down again and she felt disgusted, remembering that she might need to keep up this ruse for a long time.
"Hmm. We'll see," he said. Not the answer she was looking for, but she had to work with it.
She got up and started walking toward the door when Do Jin said, "You do remember what we do to the people who come back, right?"
She grimaced internally, her shoulders tensing. She sighed and nodded, "I know. I'll be fine."
"Alright, then. See you tomorrow."
♬♩♪♩ ♩♪♩♬
"Alright, guys, don't be late for the rehearsal, alright?" Majoo said with a pointed look.
Everyone mumbled in agreement and got up, packing their bags. Majoo, Siguk, Sebum and Hyunyul exited the guesthouse together, leaving Eungyeol and Yichan to bicker amongst themselves.
Everyone went their own way in a few minutes, tired and wanting to sleep. Hyunyul strolled along absentmindedly looking down at the street, kicking little stones in the way and smiling at the sound of dried leaves crunching beneath his feet.
Suddenly, he heard hurried footsteps and lifted his head to see someone with their hands stuffed in their pockets, almost hiding their face under the hood of their hoodie.
He squinted for a second before his eyes widened and his feet took him there quickly before he could tell himself to not do exactly that. He stopped in front of the person.
They stopped just before crashing into him and looked up. They reached till his shoulders, but the eyes were familiar, again.
Earthy brown, but hurt and tired.
Hyunyul's muscles went rigid as he flicked the hood back to see Sujin under the streetlight with a torn lip and a black eye.
"What the actual hell?" he blurted out, the idea of being cautious around her going out the window as I tipped her face up with a finger under her chin to check her neck for bruises. As I expected, there were fresh bruises showing up on her skin.
"It's fine, I'm fine," Sujin said, batting a hand. I gave her a pointed look and she cleared her throat, tucking a black strand behind her ear.
"Who did this to you?" he asked.
"I said it's fine. I just got into a fight," she said.
He scoffed in disbelief. "You got into a fight and didn't fight back? Do I look like an idiot to you?"
She sighed and stepped to the side, walking ahead and increasing Hyunyul's irritation. He grabbed her arm as she passed, causing her to cry out and clasp his wrist. His eyebrows furrowed as he looked at her again, with more worry clouding his eyes. He pulled the sleeve up to reveal a bandaged wound and looked back up at her face. She was looking anywhere but at him out of guilt.
Despite his caution, despite everything in him told him to be careful, he found himself sighing and holding her hand. "Let's go, I'll walk you home."
He reveled in the warmth of her hand. He'd always wondered if people's hands were supposed to fit together so perfectly. The curve of her hand in his and he felt like he had everything that he could want in this whole wide world.
"No!" Sujin exclaimed, but he could sense the reluctance with which she let go of his hand. "No, it would be dangerous, I'll go myself."
"You're talking about dangerous? Sujin, you didn't fight back. You let them beat you up while already having a wounded arm. I don't know what's going on but I'm sure as hell not gonna leave you alone for then to find you again."
"They won't," she said in an exasperated tone. He glared at her and opened his mouth to argue but she cut him to it. "Because the rejoining thing only happens once."
He was taken aback for a minute before his brain processed her words. His eyes grew a little wider and she nodded.
"Yeah. I joined back in the gang. So don't worry about me," she said casually.
Hyunyul felt a distinct pain in his heart. Unconsciously, he'd believed her when she'd said that she'd left that life behind. But apparently not. He felt disappointment spreading in every bone of his body as he stared at her.
He stepped back, his throat clogging up, nodded and walked on, wanting to turn back and shake some sense into her but he decided not to bother.
Sujin heard his footsteps going farther and farther away, her heart aching, her feet twitching as she stopped herself from running towards him, jumping in his arms and crying her heart out. She clasped her hands together, the one that had been in his still warm. She sighed tiredly, wanting nothing more than just to fall to the ground facedown and just laying there, but she forced her legs to move, one step, then another.
She couldn't break down now, when her plan was already in motion.
Once she reached home, she breathed in, taking a long, soothing breath in to delay her tears before opening the door and entering.
Her mother was lying on the couch, fast asleep, her head on the arm in an uncomfortable position with open mouthed snores echoing around the living room. Sujin went ahead and placed a cushion under her head, prompting her to shift. She admired her tired, peaceful face in the faint light of the lamp on the table beside the couch.
Jang Ji Ha had dark brown hair which was usually tied into a tight bun. But when it used to flow freely, she looked beautiful, like she was an angel.
She is, Sujin thought. The world doesn't deserve her.
She sighed softly, switching off the lamp and going to the kitchen. She soundlessly ate up her dinner, not even focusing on the food, she was only thinking about the plan she'd made with Yojun, find out if Do Jin was actually planning to start dealing drugs and have him caught red-handed at the first shipment.
Hyunyul's disappointed face from earlier flashed in her mind. She winced, pushing her hair back as she inhaled a shaky breath. She tried not to let it take over her mind.
She was doing it to save him too, in a way.
After all, she was changing what happened in the past so that he could live peacefully without his past with the gang hounding him.
Please, her mind spoke out in a mocking tone. You're doing this for yourself too.
As she flopped down on her bed, facing the ceiling, she realized that her mind was right. A big reason for all this was a selfish reason, maybe the first thought of selfishness she'd allowed to fester in herself for a long time. It made her happy in a way. Maybe she was finally learning to care for herself too.
Yeah, she told that mocking voice. I'm doing this so that I don't die early in the future.

Chapter Five: I'm Alone Now, Jagiya
Summary: Kang Hyunyul has had a good life since he left the Jindo gang. But when he finds out that Do Jin is going to be temporarily released, he's stressed and the return of an old flame triggers familiar feelings and with them, the old memories of the only real thing of his complicated past. All while she was saving his life, literally putting her life on the line. Chapter Summary: Hyunyul and Sujin meet again and Hyunyul questions his limited knowledge of the past. Warning: Mentions of violence and that's mostly it, i think. Tell me in the comments if I missed anything. A/N: Timeskip to after Hyunyul has gone to college yay! I'm assuming that Hyunyul got into a prestigious college lol. Also after some research that didn't rly tell me much, I'm guessing that all of these people have those keypad phones. The timeline may not be accurate, so just bear with me, pls and thx.
Tumblr media
A few years later.
Hyunyul was farely content. He'd learned sign language diligently so that he could communicate with Yichan and his girlfriend, Cheongah. He'd gotten into a very good institution after school.
And Dojin hadn't been any trouble after the school incident.
Currently, they were all taking a gap year to relax before starting to look for work, so they were able to meet every weekend. Cheongah took them all to a nice, quaint cafe that had opened up a few years ago.
They were all sitting on a table, talking to each other.
"Hello, welcome to Jiha's Cafe. I'll be your server today, what would you like to have?"
The kind, welcoming voice caught Hyunyul off guard as he almost broke his neck, turning to see the person.
Jang Sujin.
He saw surprise flash in her face at seeing him as well. Everyone ordered their food and when Yichan and Cheongah's turn came, they pointed at the name in the menu card. She immediately pocketed her little notepad and started signing.
"I know sign language, so you can talk to me in that way."
Her knuckles were bruised, he noticed. She had a fresh cut on her forehead too, he noticed. She'd cut her hair a bit shorter, her dark locks were only reaching till her neck now. But, she looked... different. There were dark circles which were enough to show her tiredness, but her gaze was so energetic that he almost missed it.
"What can I get you, sir?" She asked. He realised that the question was pointed towards him so he chose a dish that he'd already decided.
Upon hearing, he could've sworn she smiled softly, like she expected it.
The door opened with a bang, revealing a man in casual clothes, heaving breaths.
"Am I late? Is she gone?" He asked Sujin. Sujin only gave him a withering look and shook her head. He sighed out in relief and sat down on a table.
She immediately slammed her hand down on the table, glaring at him. She probably threatened him, because his eyes widened.
"Hey, you can't treat me like that! I'm seven years older than you!"
"I don't care. Either confess to her now and keep coming back to eat my dishes or get out. I'm getting tired of the longing gazes. And her just gushing about you every time she gets the chance."
"Kyungmi-shi gushes about me? What does she say?"
She groaned and clenched her fists. "If you weren't a brother figure for me, I would've killed you a long time ago. Ugh."
He turned back with a smile as she yelled out to Kyungmi to go take her future boyfriend's order.
Yichan gestured for me and signed, "Do you know her?"
Hyunyul only shook his head and signed back, "Not that well. She's just an acquaintance."
The bruises and cut made him think though. Was she still in the gang? Maybe Dojin was making her work even after she left?
Thought you'd never look back, Hyunyul. What're you doing right now?
Hyunyul was caught off guard both by the thought and because he'd placed scalding hot food in his mouth. His panic made everyone laugh as he forgot his doubts and just got into the moment.
An hour or so later, they were put of the hotel, walking towards their houses. Hyunyul had bought a bike after saving up a lot of money. He patted his pockets and realised that his keys were missing. He jogged back to the hotel, entering silently, not wanting to make his presence known.
"Dojin tried to break out, y'know?" He heard the man from earlier say and he paused, his hand poised over his keys. "You're sure you don't need protection?"
"It's not that easy to break out of jail, oppa. Plus, you're there to keep me updated."
"Sujin, from what I heard, he's very angry. What if he does break out and tries to kill you? What'll you do, then?"
She grunted dismissively, and even if he couldn't see it, he knew that she batted her hand.
"Let him try. I'm nothing if not a fighter."
"Yeah I can see that. Who the hell did you fight this time?"
"Ehhhh, just some guys."
The conversation shifted, prompting Hyunyul to pocket his keys thoughtfully.
So, Dojin was in jail for good? When had that happened?
Last he'd heard was that he'd been caught trying to sell drugs. Had he been tried and sentenced to a few years in jail?
But if he was angry at Sujin, then it could mean that....
Oh.
He paused, his feet dragging against the road as his eyes widened, staring at the ground as his heartbeat got faster.
Had it all been... an act?
♬♩♪♩ ♩♪♩♬
Sujin wiped the sweat off her forehead when she was home just above the cafe, sighing out a quick breath. She switched on the light, thankful for being able to afford it with the loans and everything else.
She fell on the couch, staring at the ceiling, loneliness starting to creep onto her quickly.
Her mother passed away a year ago. Without her, she didn't really like coming back. There was nothing to come back to, really, so she was always trying to keep the cafe open as late as she could.
But ever since Ha Kyungmi had started working there, she always succeeded in shooing the younger woman out, demanding that she close shop and head home.
"She's a good match for Yojun oppa, honestly," she murmured.
But she still was lonely in her house, with no one to talk to and no one to rant to. So, she only got up to wash the dishes.
As she did, though, her mind couldn't help but wander to earlier in the evening.
He still liked the same dishes. He still laughed the same. He was still a bit clumsy.
He really hasn't changed.
She smiled softly and sighed, wiping her forehead again and hissing because of the cut on there.
She sighed deeply again, for the burly men will be back the next day to ask for the money again.
"Shouldn't have taken the loan, mom was right," she murmured again, falling onto the bed after dinner, deciding to let go of the worries for now.
I'll be taking a nap and nothing will disturb me.
