Kanha - 3
Safari 1: Sarhi Zone (Afternoon)
We go to the Sarhi zone in the afternoon for our first safari. We are excited, so much so that we show up late for the pick up, forget our masks, carry our cameras leaving the batteries behind. We are a mess - an excited bundle of general dishevelment. A short bumpy ride (during the course of which our knuckles turn white as we clutch the Gypsy for life) later we are at the park gate which is packed with Gypsies. Almost everyone else is wearing a mask. And their cameras have batteries in them. We sigh collectively.
A state-appointed guide joins us on the safari. Even though there’s no real need for guides as tourists are accompanied by their own naturalists, guides are appointed by the state as part of generating employment for the local population. There’s a roster system that ensures that guides are randomly allotted to different groups. This prevents any potential collusion of the guides and the tourists in indulging in illegal activities within the park.
Tumblr media
MP is a tourist friendly state and doesn’t charge admission fees for cameras. You can carry however many cameras of whatever make without worrying about the charges. ‘Ideally you want to carry 2 camera bodies fixed with  different lenses to avoid the hassle of changing lenses during the safari’, Mr. Harpreet tells us at some point back at the resort.
Our first safari blows us away within the first 5 minutes. On the right we see flatlands and ponds and herds of spotted deer, on the left we see dense thickets and langurs and groups of sambhars. Mr. Ashu allows us time for our feelings to sink in. Not being able to click is a boon in disguise, we console ourselves. We take it all in and like Oliver Twist ask for more. The Gypsy moves forward languidly. We branch onto the trails into denser vegetation.
Tumblr media
We go over hillocks, see more langurs and spotted deer. We descend the hillocks and come to the meadows. Barasinghas, sambhars, gaurs, and spotted deer dot the landscape. Such overwhelming landscapes we’ve seen earlier but of Africa and only on TV. We turn off the ignition and sit in silence. A lone barking deer stares at us briefly before continuing with its foraging. A racket-tailed drongo perches itself on the barking deer that’s now cautiously scanning the trail before crossing it. A hoopoe pecks away relentlessly on the ground. Parakeets screech on distant treetops. Vultures circle high overhead. The experience is surreal.
We pass a few jungle fowls and a lone peacock. We see big bundles of wild grass cut and heaped in mounds. ‘These are grass that animals can’t graze on and which will wipe out other grass in the region. That’s why the forest department keeps cutting these weeds from time to time’, Mr. Ashu explains. Elsewhere we see fences deep inside the grasslands. ‘These fences are to prevent over-grazing. The deer population can consume enormous quantities of grass. So it’s important for us to rein in the consumption so that the grass lasts throughout the year and the grasslands don’t become barren.’
Tumblr media
Inside the dense forest we come across another group that informs us about pug marks near a stream. We go to the stream and lie in wait for the big cat. On a nearby tree we see scratches. They are long, deep, and well over 2 meters from the ground. ‘Tigers scratch tree trunks and leave marks as a way of marking their territory. Other tigers who might be eyeing this territory use these marks to figure out if the resident tiger is beatable or not. The higher the marks, the bigger the tiger. The deeper the marks, the fiercer the tiger. They won’t risk intruding unless they are sure of being able to defeat the resident’, Mr. Ashu informs. None of us are really hopeful of a tiger sighting but just sitting there in the silence that’s punctuated only by animal calls or twittering of birds is an amazing experience. Our reverie is broken by the flutter of a solitary oriental mapgpie-robin on a dead branch of a fallen tree. Further ahead we see marshlands surrounding a pond where a herd of gaurs lazily stomp around with mud-caked hooves.
Tumblr media
We pass through streams and the bridges over them. These are often flanked by tall grass, the most popular hiding place for tigers. We see another barking deer and wonder if it’s a fawn. ‘That’s actually a full-grown male. Barking deer don’t grow much in size. There’s another deer called the mouse deer in Kanha that’s even smaller than barking deer. But it’s hard to spot one’, Mr. Ashu tells us.
Sarhi is a relatively new zone compared to some of the others. It’s blessed with tall sal trees. ‘This is one of the reasons that this forest doesn’t really look bare in the dry months. At the height of summer you can see bright green leaves sprouting at the tree tops’. He stops near a smooth white barren tree. ‘The Indian Ghost’, he exclaims. The Indian Ghost presents a shimmering image at night, especially when the moon is out. It resembles a ghost and hence the name. We see many Indian Ghosts in Sarhi. We stop near a bamboo cluster. The guide points at bamboo flowers. We haven’t seen these before. ‘A bamboo flowers only once in a lifetime. Flowers signal the end of the plant. It dies thereafter and from its root, sprouts another bamboo plant’, he continues. We are reminded of the banana plant back home.
Tumblr media
Darkness descends unexpectedly. The bright green forest turns into an ominous shade of green. All of a sudden it grows colder too. We are reminded of the wind-chill factor that DK had warned us about. Wind-chill can make a difference of 5 degrees on a safari. We proceed towards the gate and see hordes of other Gypsies on their way back. The gate closes at 5:30 pm and by the time we are out, it’s truly dark. Our return drive is bumpier but we are happy. The first safari has been a great experience.

Courtyard House Wildlife Resort At Kanha
Situated in Satpura Highlands at Maikal Hills is a veritable paradise called Kanha Nartional Park. Two rivers tributary of River Narmada known as Banjar and Halon are the lifeline of this precious ecosystem. They nourish the lifeforms and sustain the environment and from them emerge a number of streams that feed the park with precious commodity called water.
Tumblr media
Kanha is a conservation unit which has been created to save the tiger from being extinct. The results have been good and the population is on the increase. The Project Tiger Program has managed to save not only the tiger but the whole ecosystem. The biggest achievement has been  saving the critically endangered hard ground barasinga the only race of swamp deer in the World.
Tumblr media
In twenty percent of the core area tourism takes place. This activity is organised and regulated by the forest department. Morning and evening safaris are organised for excursions inside the park. Tourist have to book the safari for one among the four zones or divisions and a permit is issued which allows them to explore in an open jeep.
Tumblr media
The safari are in the wild haven and the tigers roam free. They are often difficult to locate and hence few trips in the forests are required to see them. This calls for accommodation since the overseas tourists,  wildlife photographers, enthusiasts and birders stay here for more than three nights.
Tumblr media
The accommodation is provided by wildlife resorts which are well equipped to cater to this wildlife loving crowd and photographers. Even in the remote confines of the jungles the accommodations provide modern amenities, all facilities and great service. The food too is great cooked by expert chefs.
Tumblr media
These properties are properly equipped to provide in depth wildlife experience through safaris accompanied by trained naturalists, nature treks and birding trips. They have a well stocked library with in house documentaries on wildlife.
Tumblr media
A part from safaris a good enough time is spent in the resort confines. Hence the wildlife resorts are well equipped for a good stay. The location in Kanha forest among nature and clean fresh air provide great health benefits. The serenity and peace delivers a meditation effect which is good for mental health. The tiger safari holidays are truly beneficial for the family and friends.
Tumblr media
Thus ecotourism is one of the fast growing sector in India. With popularity of bird watching it  is supporting the rise of ecotourism.
Tumblr media
Kanha National Park is situated near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh in Central India. It is four hours drive from Jabalpur which is connected by air and rail with New Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

...the air was so fresh and the river extremely calm, everything was quiet, the sun was slowly rising over the horizon, the sunbeams were shining through and now the misty blue on the horizon was giving way to orangish hues. The transition was so surreal and magical; overwhelming natural beauty. We just stood there, mesmerized and awestruck by the surroundings.
