“And how’d you win before?”
Jodah fumbled for a starting point to his retell the Invasion. Seeing the snaking body of Jin-Gitaxias ready to absorb the aether reservoir, he opted to summarize: “We hit them with a big boat.”
Kari Zev snapped on her goggles. “I can work with that.”

Note
I'm guessing that the new Ragavan is different so that the two tokens don't legend rule each other. This way you can run Kari Zev, Skyship Raider in your Baral and Kari Zev deck.
Yes, that most definitely seems true.

“And…done! Here you are, Kari, another dragon sculpture as promised.”
With but a wave of her hands, Saheeli put the finishing touches on the dragon statue, twisting the material into a more defined shape. As soon as the artificer stopped her magic, the metal came to life, moving just like a dragon of meat and scales. It took flight and flew across the room, before finally perching atop the shoulder of the sky pirate standing opposite Saheeli.
“Er…t-thanks…” Kari Zev buckled under the sudden weight but quickly recovered, balanced somewhat by the monkey sitting on her other shoulder. “Ragavan and I are very grateful. But, just for the record, this isn’t for us.”
“Right, it’s for Jam,” Saheeli smirked. “But if you’re the one coming here, and commissioning me…and paying me?”
Kari rolled her eyes as she tossed a full coin pouch into her friend’s outstretched hand. “Jam may not be able to fit into your workshop here, but he’s smart.”
“He’s a dragon,” Saheeli clarified. “Not to turn down your money, but what could he even want with statues of dragons? He is one! And I’m sure he has enough treasure already, in that rooftop hoard of his.”
“You know, I’m not one hundred percent certain, but…I think he might be lonely up there.”
“Lonely?” This gave Saheeli pause. The artificer’s smile faded as she listened to Kari.
“Yes, or at least I think so. Think about it: he displays each one you’ve made him, then perches beside them.”
“Right,” Saheeli nodded, recalling the scene vividly. “Well…it doesn’t matter, really. You’re doing your…friend…? A good turn. And you’re not swindling me…for once.”
Kari withered under Saheeli’s glare. “Ah-ha, that was one time. Before I even knew who I was robbing! A-And besides, Jam is my friend, but he’s also more than that. He’s a symbol of us pirates’ fierce independence!”
“Mmm-hmm. Just like those statues I’ve made him?”
“Er, yeah, sure!”
Saheeli bit back a laugh.

[I don’t recall there being very many dragons at all on Kaladesh. I think there were, what, two total between the two sets?]

A Strange Way to Get a Statue
Ok. So.  It’s been a few days.  Fighting was pretty intense, but the invasion seems to be over now.  They’re building a statue of me Kari.  Here’s what happened.
I was holding out by myself on the sixteenth floor of an old Consulate court building, fighting against some triangle-headed... things.  I manage to get into an office room and lock the door behind to try to catch my breath for a second.
Suddenly I start feeling the ground shake, and the sounds of an airship firing on approach.  I looked out the window to see a skyship being chased by a huge bipedal Phyrexian colossus.  The ship started trying to keep the building between it and the colossus, while still peeking out just enough to get some shots off.
Then, as I’m looking out the window at it, the door behind me bursts open and I trip out the window directly into the left eye of the colossus.  It starts trying to swat at me, but then a goddamn monkey jumps out of the skyship into its other eye.  It’s flailing trying to get us off, I’m holding on for dear life, and the monkey is going bananas.  The colossus manages to get one of us in each hand and holds us up to look at us.  But meanwhile, to skyship has used this distraction to line up a perfect shot and blasts a hole through its chest.  As it’s collapsing, the monkey and I get free and manage to make it through a broken window back into the building relatively unscathed.  The triangle things are swarming around the bottom of the building, so I start heading up with the monkey on my shoulder.
The skyship pulled up to the roof and we got aboard.  The captain thanks me for my “heroic distraction” and “making sure Ragavan was safe”.  She introduces herself as Kari Zev and asks me to fight as part of her crew.  Without the colossus around, we actually manage to start taking back a little ground.
The crew starts telling the story to every other pocket of resistance we meet over the next few days, but each time it gets bigger and less accurate.  By the time the invasion was over, you’d think I had been single-handedly dueling the thing while Kari lined up a head shot.
And now that its all over, they’re building a statue of us together.

Do you have a favorite legendary card from the most recent March of the Machines set? I really like Baral and Kari Zev.
It's so hard to pick just one.
Mechanically, I like what all of the saga praetors are doing, especially Urabrask and Sheoldred, but they're a weird new thing, so for non-DFCs, Quintorius is really neat and fun-looking
Yargle and Multani makes me laugh every time I see it.
Flavorwise, I enjoy what Kroxa and Kunoros teaming up represents.

hello i came back from playing my local store championship last night the format was modern and i dont play that format but the modern burn deck has a lot of cards in common wit the pioneer burn deck so we shuffled some cards around and were off to the races.
so the thing to know about me is that th emajority of my collection was from when i was like 10 and drafted every friday night as a kid and played vintage on tuesdays with the burn and stompy decks i built with my winnings from draft. so funnily enough, i actually own blood stained mires and sacred foundries and over time ive bene building up more of the red/white lands so i can eventually try either the convoke or heroic decks in pioneer, but i havent tracked down any of the actual white cards yet. it didnt make sense to splash white in my list for modern without any boros charms or literally any of the sideboard tools (good or otherwise) so i just put my searing bloods into the boros charm slot and left in eidolons. people love resolving ragavan and scam has plenty of things to searing blaze/blood. this will be great.
round 1 - eldrazi tron
reader all of their creatures are bigger than searing blaze/blood and my eidolons are actually just 2/2s that hurt me. i do not own blood moons, so i bring in smash to smithereens for the inevitable chalices and i bring in the kari zev expertises that i thought would be funny to resolve against murktide. in game 2 i manage to shoot my opponent down to single bolt range, but i forgot that karn can animate the one ring, so my opponent untaps and beats me to death with their ring. womp womp. game 1 i definitely had a chance to win, but i popped my only mire early to double spell, trapping a searing blaze in my hand. i died with that searing blaze in hand, facing down an opponent with a lot of eldrazi in play and 3 life. lesson learned. 0-1
round 2 - boros burn
seems like a nice guy! i stuff him game one with the good ol 7 bolts gameplan and game 2 he gets a little ahead on board against me, so i have to start blocking. my block buys me the turn i need to suspend two rift bolts with him at 12 and me with two more castable bolts in hand for when i untap. i am on 6 bececause of my very inspired choice to leave ramunap ruins in the deck in lieu of the horizon lands i dont own. opponent is only able to suspend a single rift bolt for his turn. i untap and burn him down. opponent saw 0 of his sideboard pieces. i had 0 sideboard pieces to put in. thats magic. 1-1
round 3 - boros burn
i know this opponent! we've drafted at a differet store in the city! anyways he kicks the ever loving shit out of me. this guy is a Burn Player. my last opponent also said he has been a burn player for years, but his deck didnt give him the opportuinity to leverage that experience it seems like. but r3 opponent? he knew when he was free to start shocking his lands in and he held back his creatures when he realized i was playing so many searing bloods/blazes so that i would be able to use all my mana efficiently and all of his turns seems perfect. absolutely stomped. 1-2
round 4- eldrazi tron (how???????)
i also know this opponent! i have like the worst record against this guy. i do what i can, but my bloods/blazes are poorly positioned against even his higher creature desnity version of this deck. he manages to chalice on 1 and 2 in game 2 and my only out is to draw my second copy of kari zevs expertise (drew the first one and used it to attack for lethal that made him trade his stolen thoughtknot seer with his other thoughtknot seer) and for him to resolve a 4 power creature or better that isnt thoughtknot seer, unless i am still in top deck mode wherein he has to play the seer AND THEN i draw expertise off the top the turn after. i was also playing extra mountains instead of sving them for blazes because he had shown me an ulamog in game 1 so i stayed on 4 lands with extra lands in my hand so that if he resolved ulamog, i could play my 3rd land and kari zev immediately if the opportunity presents itself. all of this was while he had an unopposed matter reshaper in play, so i had 4 turns to find the last copy of a card in my deck with about 40 cards left. my opponent even cast an ulamog for the style points so the stars were aligned. reader, they were not that aligned. 1-3
hey what can you do. it was nice getting a lot of opponents i recognized and the event was only 4 rounds (great turnout for modern!!!) so it was way less stressful. bummed i didnt manage to pull down one of those new eidolon promos but hey what can you do. i went in with a janky list and all of the games were p fun in spite of that so no complaints. honestly i spent the majority of the night talking to this guy who had shown up to ask about how to play magic actually, so i tried to be as good as a teacher as i could under the circumstances. in-between rounds he actually brought back a custard bun for me (because i was being so helpful i guess?) from the chinese bakery nearby which was very sweet of him

Let's Talk about "Tennis" (aka The Death Race)
In the Magic 30 Panel at Gen Con, the team presented a whole bunch of information about upcoming releases through mid-2026. And there's going to be a whole bunch of cool things! But let's talk about "Tennis," the 2025 Q1 set.
MaRo indicated they've always wanted to do a death-race set (think Mad Max: Fury Road) and this is their chance to do it. Interestingly, it's not going to be on just 1 world; this death race is massive to be set on 3 worlds (all in the one set). For the 3 worlds, MaRo indicated 2 would be worlds we've previously seen as the setting for a set that we've haven't returned to, and the final world is one we have seen in a set, but wasn't the (only) setting for the set.
We also got this sweet concept art:
Tumblr media
Image description: Concept art featuring two vehicles - the first is chrome red with glowing wheels and the second is a black muscle car with blue flames coming from the wheels and a spirit/demon floating or riding it
So what three worlds will it be on? I had three ideas right of the bat.
Kaladesh. The plane that introduced Vehicles to the game. Also, the car in the front of the concept art looks like an updated Fleetwheel Cruiser. Plus, I could totally see Depala and Kari Zev wanting to get in on the action.
Alara. For this to be a "death race," we need there to be some sort of hellscape. And wouldn't you know it but Grixis fits that bill nicely. And when you add in that Esper was also a demi-plane of artifice and that fans have been asking for a return to the plane AND this is part of the "Dragonstorm Arc" (hello dragons of Jund!), this feels like a shoe-in.
Vryn. Jace's homeworld was partially featured in Magic Origins, and we've never seen it fully fleshed out. It's on MaRo's "short list" and also has some artifice themes.
What do you think? Where will Tennis take us?

Yeah, hilarious, Kari Zev strikes out again. The Kari Zevs will continue until morale improves. As for today, still not totally sure what we're drawing, but some potentially cool stuff, potentially something super obscure that's region-specific, maybe a mix--I just don't know yet.
