Unwelcome (Sabo's Tattered Invitation)

It was a beautiful, quaint little thing.

Rio would have nothing less than perfection for that goofy doe-eyed kid and their daughter. They could be just as hard to please as their hubby about particulars of the smallest details as the wedding planners were loathe to find out. Well. They were getting paid more than fair also courtesy of Katakuri's treasure hoard so that should've been enough to cover any therapy costs needed.

What mattered was that Andy and Koala were happy and having the best day of their life. Rio even pulled Noire and Alto aside to help with the weather of all things. Absolutely nothing was to go wrong on today of all days.

What did darken the reception's doorstep, however, was something that Andy begged and pleaded for - Rio's initial response was an immediate and firm no, he could hear how uneasy Koala was over the phone in the conversation that ensued after, how Ace pleaded to vouch for his brother.

Despite all odds, Andy wore the two of them down. Sabo was allowed entry like an unsightly old toy dragged on the floor by a toddler to a fancy dinner if only to placate them and reduce the parents' headache.

When Dragon's dog walked in beside Fire Fist himself, taking the plus one of what would usually go to Yamato, Deuce on Ace's other arm, Rio downed another glass of wine. Ace at the very least had the decency to look sheepish under the warning look they shot him when he waved.

Keep him on a tight leash.

They'd send the Spade pirates home with a doggy bag and an extra bone for Yam as compensation. Right now Rio would have much preferred the rowdiness Kaido's son brought as opposed to the "guest" Andy personally wanted there.

Strawhat Luffy, of course, was banned altogether. Ace could vouch for one brother but he was fully aware of the chaos that the other brought, and no one here wanted to deal with the Marines' armed militia or some secret villain this island actually housed ruining the function.

Robin was allowed to bring her hubby because Koala wanted her there and Brook of course supplied the music for the night at Andy's request, both men openly sobbing at different points of the evening over "young love" - but three Strawhats were already more than Rio was willing to swing normally.

Andy and Koala had gotten them to sit down for a short forty-five minutes to eat and Rio even played the piano with Brook's accompaniment on the violin, stealing a kiss or two from their captain's table, letting Alba fix his dress shirt while they talked about where the kids would go from here with Violet, watching Katakuri and Kaku both flounder at social interaction under a little teasing.

From scrutinizing the catering's plating and flower arrangements clipboard in hand, to yelling at Ace for being faced down in his hors d'oeuvres. All of this between keeping a close eye on the happy couple, Rio would consider the night more or less a success.

As the festivities died down and Rio slipped away for a smoke, that damn toy finally crept out from the shadows. Sabo cleaned up nice in his freshly laundered three-piece with that ridiculous top hat and cravat he insisted on wearing everywhere but Rio saw right through him.

Buttons for eyes hanging lose on old thread, fabric thinned from being put in the wash one too many times, bits of stuffing trailing his every step. It was so worn and battered you'd think they'd let the family dog have a go at it before coming here.

Someone with no face in the mirror desperately cobbling together a human veneer.

"You've been avoiding me all night."

"Yet you still can't seem to take hint, can you?"

Sabo's expression pinched at the utter lack of emotion in that response, teeth set so tightly against each other he might just reset his jaw. He wasn't even worth looking at.

"Why."

"What?" Rio turned with their eyebrows knitted in the way that Sabo could recognize as annoyance. Okay, he could work with annoyance.

"I mean why are we always like this, why couldn't we just sit down and have a nice, normal—"

"I avoided you because I wanted to have a pleasant evening without any of this "nicety" nonsense," Rio flicked their gaze below to light up another cigarette, "you know I'm the last person that wants you here, so I don't understand why do you keep pushing."

When their eyes met again hers were once again cold and as Rio turned to leave. Losing that inch of expression that he managed to eek out from them, even if through irritation, Sabo felt his stomach hit the floor.

"I don't get why you keep running away from me, why do you hate me so much? Anything I do isn't enough for you, so just tell me how I can fix this! Why—Why did you abandon me?!"

Sabo laid chase. He was losing important ground, what exactly that was supposed to mean he couldn't quite parse right now. In a mild state of panic, he grabbed Rio's arm in an attempt to get them to stay. Instead, he felt the reflexive flinch, saw the look in her eyes, right before Rio yanked it away.

Oh.

"Rio, I-"

"Stop trying." They punctuated their words with a step back up the stairwell, until they stood at full height again.

"If you pulled your head out of your ass for as long as it takes you to lie to yourself non ti illuderesti che non ci sia una buona ragione per cui sei qui. You are here, because of whatever good graces luce dei miei occhi Constantine still has for your presence."

Rio always towered over Sabo even back when he was young and they still had a good relationship but little else made him feel as small as how he did in this moment right now as they walked him back to the railing.

"What you will not do, Sabo, is stand here and pretend that you are the most put upon man in the world because I won't waste my night listening to you blow smoke up everyone's ass.

We did our best to keep you out of Dragon's reach because she knew he'd turn you into a monster and we lost everything. I didn't have my future go up in flames just for you to destroy Andy's happiness on a selfish whim, quindi non puoi sederti qui and whine to me about being left behind."

For the first time in—fuck, forever, he guessed—Sabo saw what genuine anger looked like on Rio's face.

But for all the guilt and regret that he regularly tamped down beginning to swirl and spiral inside of him, the central emotion that maybe even protected his mind from the rest of those heavy feelings was confusion at one particular word.

""We"?"

Rio's gaze took on a frightening chill, like they'd accidentally exposed something precious and unfathomably raw, before it slipped back into that usual blank slate.

Just behind the shape of their shoulders, Sabo barely made out the glow of Haki in someone's eyes before an unbelievable pressure threatened to crush him. Rio simply turned with a passive raised hand, "I'm fine, Kat. Lets go back for dessert."

Sabo couldn't see her face anymore but he could almost hear how exhausted Rio was. And with a few clicks of their heels down the stairs, Sabo was left to catch his breath alone.

Slumped against the balcony while his best friend and the love of his life enjoyed the rest of their wedding.

Kirin

Man rarely gets drunk, if ever

He drinks a lot, enough to keep up with the likes of Zoro, even, laughing obnoxiously and partying it up with the other resident alcoholics like frat bros without the misogyny - just guys being lads <3

But it’s only around other people and never when he’s feeling upset

Kirin avoids drinking alone, if even one or two other people joins him then that’s enough, though in this case rather than being howdy and partying it up, it’s almost like he gets-

Somber?? Somber.

For once, he doesn’t crack jokes, isn’t even playful or snide about anything, he’s just-- plain and open about his feelings with these one or two people who had the misfortune of catching the silly lil guy, the resident trickster, when he wasn’t goofing around

Kirin doesn’t like being vulnerable like this, it makes him feel icky and the hangovers worse he feels - if he wants to have a heart to heart with someone he’d much rather do it sober than with the ply of alcohol

Law come pick him up Kirin needs to be held (he’ll spend the next morning sleeping all those feelings off in the Heart captain’s room surrounded by Law’s nice smelling clothes)

Reiji

A miserable light-weight

Reiji starts getting tinted ears after the first one and a half drinks and it's only downhill from there, it won't be long until he's fully red in the face, slurring his words, and sleepily trying to cuddle anyone who resembles his partners within his periphery

Or, in at least a handful of cases, actively avoiding Kirin trying to help him to bed because, "he's a taken man, dammit!" before he drunkenly wonders if he even is one, then promptly falls asleep on the tatami, couch, wherever he can rest his head semi-comfortably

And that's entirely why Reiji usually spends his time at the party either in the kitchen, or spoiling his captain with Kirin's head in his lap

For how drunk he gets, though? Surprisingly little hangover, man can pop an aspirin, reorient himself for ten minutes, and then go about his day like he didn’t get absolutely shitfaced the night before on maybe three to four drinks, at most

Reiji does, however, like making amazake or other kinds of rice wines, for the people on his ship that enjoy alcohol, as a hobby

Rio

Holds his alcohol pretty well and knows when to stop because he has morons to corral into bed who can and will get into shit if left unsupervised

Rio maintains a pleasant buzz throughout the night until half an hour before it’s time to leave, sober up, and then pack their clowns to go

By far the most responsible drinker by a longshot, especially in comparison to her beloved crew (she does love them, they just piss him off sometimes a lot of the time)

But still the one saddled with the worst hangover out of all of them because god must think it’s funny 

There can’t be a shred of light in the room when he wakes up otherwise Rio’s eyeballs and cranium feel like they’re going to explode

Let alone any noise, GOD, if anyone so much as breathes too loudly in his direction he’ll tell them to shut the fuck up

There’s little else they can do about it other than cover his eyes and maybe cry into his husband’s giant tits until the pounding in his head subsides - Katakuri a comfortable mattress hubby, if not a little concerned

The general rule on Kirin’s crew is that if Rio’s drinking, then Izzy isn’t - and vice versa, to make sure that at least two people will still be functional enough the next day if Lady Luck frowned on them with another Grand Line-typical disaster, hostile pirates, or the navy

thoughts on each other (Katakuri and Law)

Ah yes, another worst gen supernova on Kat’s lawn askdnfkslhf

Rio talked about a lot of things in their little moments of peace together, about his time with the rev army, the people he met long his travels, his captain; Kata was one of the only people he could vent to in his little canary cage, after all - Law and his crew were thrown in here and there

So going into it, he has some idea of what kind of person Law is, even if through Rio’s (correct) dweeb accusations and vague threats of what he’d do to him if that “punk” hurt his captain while he was gone

Actually meeting though, given that they’re not in a life or dead situation, it might be a little awkward - namely because I’m not sure if they’d have that many overlaps in interests

Both their personalities, or at least what they pretend is their personalities to the general public, lean into the “cool, stoic” types that brood in the corner away from anything fun, so I’m thinking any early interaction they’d have would probably fall into that

Law doesn’t think much of Kata at first, or rather not a lot about him, like “oh, another one ally from Kiri-ya’s side, ok”

Is Law surprised at all that Luffy also had something to do with fundamentally helping changing the viewpoints of someone who could once be considered an enemy to them? No, are they still mildly amused and god forbid they’d ever admit it to anyone proud? Yeah, maybe a little 

They’re both powerful pirates in their own rites with fearsome reputations but aside from that what are they gonna talk about, the weather? Lmao with what social skills

Once they’re a little more comfortable around each other though, probably with Kirin to break the ice or Rio picking a fight with Law that gradually fizzles into a regular chat because they’re both great greasing the conversation I can see them having small talks here and there

It’s nothing big and never lasts too long but it’s a start, eventually they’d talk about just things on their mind, inconsequential stuff that doesn’t matter but it feels nice to air out anyway, and sometimes it’s just nice sitting in silence next to one another knowing that there’s no pressure to have to talk, that just each other’s company is enough

I’m thinking of when we talked about Katakuri building/running little model trains and god Law and Kata would go HARD for their hyperfixations

They take turns explaining things at first, but once something gets the ball rolling on Law’s Sora lore (literally just mentioning it) or Kat’s little steam engines (back and forth questions make him SO happy that someone’s listening in and taking note of his interests) - they kind of end up talking over each other at times and circling back to different branches of ideas because they’re going on so many tangents because they’re so excited to infodump to someone who’s actively and enthusiastically participating

You know they’re 100% combining interests and coming up with pages worth of additional Sora lore on how trains were actually a huge part of that lil comic world because they were funded by Germa to privately transport eeeevil supplies and now there’s an entire arc dedicated to it in Law’s canon for it

For a gift exchange once Kata gave Law a wooden model train painted with the Germa 66 colors and Law give Kat a teddy (Katakuri sized, so it was like as tall as them) dressed as a little train conductor, both handmade, they then both proceeded not to feel anything at all like “real, manly men” were supposed to

(Law was faced down on his bed for an hour and Katakuri was hesitant at first but once he held Mr. Walter Puffington III, Rio had to convince him to put the plush away after two consecutive nights in a row of being the third wheel to it when he went to bed)

Lastly I absolutely do not think that these two can smile on command, like if they’re put on the spot, leaning more to Kata’s end but also looking at Law’s first bounty poster?? Hello sir why do you look evil????

They try, they really do, but more often than not it kind of just looks a little stiff if not uncomfortable for them to hold their faces in that position; Kirin and Rio still absolutely adore them either way, Rio’s kissing all over Kata’s face and his teefies, and Kirin’s got Law in a vice, laughing and smooching all over his ‘adorable’ mushroom while Law tries to fight his way out, conveniently forgetting that he has the ability to shambles away

Plus, all this means is that when Kata and Law do smile without realizing that they are, and it’s sweet and endearing even if a little awkward sometimes and god damn it Kirin and Rio are on the floor (internally, for the latter, he has some reputation to keep up, after all Kirin’s just a gay bitch in love)

Bonus:

I think Law would (secretly) find Maren’s style cool and if those two had to do their own things in the same room together they’d be able to vibe in the silence for a while like he/they bitches do but for the love of god once Maren opens his mouth with teasing intent it’s all over Law’s spending at least an hour faced down in Kirin tiddy to decompress and recharge, no bully them he’s trying their best >:’c
