The album’s propulsive and introspective lead single “Inside Outside” finds Stables as magnetic as ever, joined once again by her stalwart band of Rozi Plain (bass/vocals), Neil Smith (guitar), and Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums), and accented by a cascading horn quartet arrangement by Jesse D. Vernon. The track arrives alongside a video directed by Hannah Owen that features Stables and a pair of dancers capturing the song’s ebullient charm. Stables explained the song’s reflective lyrics: “What makes things happen? How much choice do we have? Electricity and chemistry that is out of our control? Chewing. Choosing. Internal forces or external ones? Do we just behave the way people expect us to behave? Or do they pre-empt what's happening? Before it's happened? Because they can see it in us before we know it ourselves? Big change that has been brewing for longer than we realise. Were we just ignoring it? Was it so deeply buried? Or did we see it all along but chose to ignore it? How much does anything change? Or is it just the way we see it that changes?” This Is The Kit will embark on their biggest headlining U.K. tour later this year, including a show at London, U.K.’s Barbican on November 25th; a full routing is below and tickets are on-sale now. U.S. shows will be announced soon. Careful Of Your Keepers is daring and soft, cutting and warm–a wild feat of complexity and combined dispositions. There’s a shared language of the band’s family experience that is as audible as ever in these recordings, which boast beautiful instrumental performances that still leave the nuanced space required for Stables’ vocals to live at the forefront. “The album was nearly called Goodbye Bite. And in a way it still is,” says Stables. “I went for Careful Of Your Keepers in the end. It’s one of my favorite songs on the album, a song that for me holds the general feeling of the album as a whole. The fragility of things. Of situations. Of relationships. Of humans. What we do to look after each other and ourselves. The passing of time and what that does to us, and how we live our lives going forward.” Guiding the ship through changing seas is producer Rhys. Stables described his role as being a “tonesetter,” watchful and attentive to the band dynamics while making sure to always follow a hunch for where a new sound could find its place in the recording. “I’ve always loved the idea of working with him somehow, and when this album started getting planned, I realized that maybe this was my chance to reach out and see if he was up for working together,” Stables explains. “And he was! As if that wasn’t enough, he was also up for doing a bit of singing on the record, which totally blew my mind and made my year. “he’s built of love” your tags always, always make me cry but the lover/fighter post really hit different for me. a life of trauma he never got to see the other side of...a whole world he never got to explore because he was still trying to shake the shackles of his pain and previous trauma. eddie deserved better and we’ll never get to know how he could’ve grown, how he could’ve shown his love to the losers and to the world. it feels almost suffocating in its unfairness?

i feel this incredibly deeply, and i’m really sorry that you’re in this space of having to feel so strongly over this (bc it sucks) but as my friend said earlier, YANVA (you are not vibing alone). which doesn’t make it better exactly but at least there’s some comfort to be found in like mindedness, i think.

bc this is it!!! this is it for me, this is what tragedy comes down to in the general sense of the losers (loss) and particularly with eddie specifically (loss of a chance/denial of opportunity/a life of having other people’s limitations and expectations imposed upon him and being asked to swallow them whole, take your meds, eds, they’ll help you, you’re too delicate, eddie, you’re sick and you shouldn’t play with those nasty boys). it’s just incredibly fucking tragic to me that eddie is a character who is so loyal, so strong, who manages such heroic feats and moments of unflinching bravery despite the structure of his entire life and the way trauma has constructed the scaffolding for his selfhood... that he’s all of this and yet never gets to see who he could be on the other side. like they’re fighting because they promised, they’re fighting because someone has to, and they’re fighting for their lives, which means to survive—-but they’re also fighting for the chance to see what life is after this, and while it’s incredibly eddie that he would see death as the very real risk and still act anyway, that he would give his life for his friends, that doesn’t make it any less devastating or tragic that he never gets to experience the peace and ability to grow that they’re fighting for. like his death scene is incredibly moving in the text! eddie’s sense of clarity (which @bookeddie was talking abt the other day and i always rec hitting her up for eddie content) breaks my heart, like... this is not bad at all. the light flowing through... it’s a sense of catharsis, i guess, this clarity that comes from pain, yes, but i think—importantly—action that was his choice. it’s a passage that hits me in the heart! but i just can never get over the feeling of. how it’s catharsis in motion, how he should have gotten to experience that clarity not just for that moment, but for the rest of his life. i don’t think i’m making any sense anymore (and am actually about to crash again, i think) but it just comes down to that suffocating unfairness: when eddie gets to see for himself with complete clarity how much he can do, and how brave and loyal and strong he is, with nobody trying to hide it or take it away from him, be it his mother or magical forces, it’s his last moments. and it just deeply sucks because it should have been the first moments of the rest of his life, not the last moments of a half-lived one.
