30.8.19
Headed to their hotel for the Diamond Head Hike. The lot at the park was full so we had to go down and climb up. There were some cute Japanese girls I saw entering the park when we tried to find parking but only saw them briefly before we actually entered the park. There was another group of girls with one wearing lingerie. At the entrance, they sold some pineapples which we wanted to get after the hike.
The hike was fairly strenuous so I started saying that meme “I need a goddam pizza”.
When we stopped at an outlook, I noticed one girl looked a lot like Minh Tam. I heard her friend even say her name so I confirmed it was her and texted Michael about it.
Minh Tam and her friend actually asked me to take a picture for her. After we took some pictures of ourselves, I loudly clapped and my hands and said, “Let’s get them pineapples bitches” which my group found funny but a lady nearby laughed and found it cute. We ended up getting some pineapples although I wanted to try other thing besides the dole whip but ended up with the pineapple one since it was free.
For lunch, we went to Rainbow Drive In. On the way there, we saw some altercation between two black guys. One of them was yelling at the other and the other guy had a tire iron in his hand. They were about to fight and the guy who was unarmed held down the guy who had the tire iron. The cops showed up soon after and it was quite entertaining to watch that I remarked it would probably be more interesting than the wedding. We stopped by the hostel because I forgot my clothes and then headed to Desmond’s/Kristine’s hotel so we could all change. It was a bit of a drive to the ceremony so I fell asleep in the van.
When we got to the wedding, the wedding planner was waiting at the top with a go cart and Danielle’s grandma was sitting shotgun. The planner said she could give a ride but only for two of us. Being the only single one, I loudly said, “Well fuck you guys” and jumped in the kart which made them laugh but Kristine got in with me and told me how Danielle’s grandma was sitting in front.
When we drove down, the wedding area was quite beautiful but we all applied mosquito spray. I noticed a lot of people I had seen in PCE before but some I had never seen and most of them didn’t notice me. There were quite a lot of good looking ladies like Kelly Kawai (I stalked her on fb) and a girl with purple hair who I later found out was Danielle’s cousin. There was also one girl who had a long dress but was showing off her legs when she applied the mosquito spray. When the ceremony started, I noticed a girl in a pink dress sitting a few rows up who looked pretty hot from her profile behind her sunnies. She looked better from that angle though cause when she was up and about she looked less so.
After the ceremony when people were up and talking, I noticed that Tyler was also at the wedding but he didn’t recognize me. But we went around introducing ourselves (including Jon Fish) and when Tyler spoke up, that’s when I piped up and he said he hadn’t recognized me but he had noticed me looking at him. I said in an Aussie accent yeah I was like, “I think I know this cunt” and that made everyone laugh.
Tyler also introduced me to his gf Amanda and we caught up as to what we were up to and he told me that he would be moving to Japan soon. I enjoyed catching up with him and I was genuinely surprised but pleased that he was there. I texted Amy about it right away.
At the venue, I noticed another girl in some green jump suit who was friends with the girl in pink. She was the most attractive in my opinion, at least in terms of having that balance between cute and sexy. I realized later on though that she was dating one of the musicians.
Generally got quite drunk before the food. At the bar there were two specials, Danielle’s drink of choice and Aaron’s surprise which wasn’t anything special.
Aaron’s dad was a typical Filipino and gave quite a funny speech along with the mom. Danielle’s father and daughter dance was a hip hop dance as would be expected and we were all surprised how well her dad could dance.
When they opened up the dance floor, some ghetto ass music started playing and we were like oh it’s gonna be that kind of wedding. Because a lot of PCE modern people were there, there were a lot of talented dancers and we saw Aaron and Danielle get some lap dances.
Didn’t get to speak with Tyler as much during the wedding but I took a picture with him and Amanda to send to Amy. Also took a pic with Marvin to send to Michael and Marielle recognized me. Danielle told me weeks later that Mar told her all the PCE people were staring at me trying to figure out who I was.
After the wedding, Kristine was quite drunk and kept repeating herself. There was an after party but none of my crew wanted to go. We stopped by a Magnolia ice cream store elsewhere. I tried the halo-halo but would’ve liked it without the pinipig. Marvin got some avocado ice cream which I made fun of him for.
As I was cleaning up, I noticed the Indians in the hostel were out so I thought it would just be me for the night. An Aussie guy, Roan, came in and we chatted for a while, followed by a guy from Canada, Max. We ended up going to Cheesecake factory and getting a late meal and chatting. Turns out Roan grew up in Sydney and was vegan actually so we talked about Lentils for a little bit.

How I found paradise and lost it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Asia to the United States
From Seoul I took a plane halfway across the Pacific ocean to arrive on the islands of Hawaii. My days in Waikiki where dominated by two major experiences: Lack of funding and surfing. Coming from Asia and half a year of cheap sleeping, eating and loads of adventures I was shocked by the cost of  daily living on Hawaii. Almost everything on the island is imported and thus another 30 percent adds to the already high prices. Even the cheapest place to sleep was on par with the highest prices I had paid in Myanmar with almost 40 US Dollars a night.
So I staid very low key. Did some groceries myself and changed the mode from eating out to preparing my own food and breakfast. A welcome change after spending every cent on outside food since a long time. Oahu is the “gathering place” of the islands. The area around Honolulu has a very good public transportation system. As these days were high season prices for rental cars skyrocketed into the hundred dollar region for a compact car. So renting a car was out of reach as well.

Surfing to the rescue
So I made a decision. I would spend my time with something very cheap once you are over the initial investment. I would learn surfing. The same principle as for cars applied to rental boards. These were quite expensive with 30 US dollars a day to rent a board I discovered Craigslist. A place to find private classified ads. I bought a beginner board for 75 US dollars and off I went. The first day I literally schlepped myself back onto the shore. I’ve never done something more exhausting as paddling out onto the sea. Trying to push me up onto the board after hectically paddling into it. And all of this a dozen times. Many times unsuccessfully.
But after a few days of this physical exercise my body started to adapt. My muscles were still sore in the evening. But not as much as in the beginning. I will never forget the feeling of waves rolling over me while I was sitting on the dinner table after a long day out on the water. It was rocking me back and forward even though the floor under me was concrete again.

The paradise
The region was discovered by some lengthy walks and a few climbs atop a viewpoint in the back of the city. The nature on the island is truly stunning. And combined with the beautiful beaches, the color of the water and the ever changing weather it is a truly unique place. When I did eat outside of the hosteling international kitchen I often had Ahi Poke Bowl. A regional specialty dish consisting of raw sushi grade tuna, rice and avocado. Such a great contrast to a lot of carbo hydrate sucking swimming and surfing.

And how I lost it
Coming to Hawaii is a thing I would recommend to everyone looking into a journey to another place and culture. But bring a lot of cash. If I would have done this trip as a individual travel I would have been prepared much better. If you can spend all your money during three or four weeks it will make this island group so much more special. You can see live volcanoes, some of the most beautiful waterfalls, go diving in crystal clear water and whatnot.
I made up an itinerary to visit Kawai and Big Island, with flights and rental cars without food that would have been another 3.000 US dollars only. As I plan to stay away for another half year and have plans not to live off from toast and ketchup alone I skipped this part of the travel for another time in my live. I would want to come back to this place. Plan ahead and find a good place to live well in advance. Rent a car when it is still cheap and profit from the other possibilities that a well planned schedule holds.
I lost it because I decided to do so.
