The Dutton family always thanked Gator for serving everyone on the family ranch. He was a great cook and did an amazing job. But I decided that I needed to show my appreciation towards the family that I have been helping run their ranch for a few years. When Beth called me saying they needed a new ranch hand I instantly took up the offer. Making them all dinner and giving Gator the day off is the best way to show my appreciation and loyalty to the ranching family.
The front door opened while I was sitting the brisket in the center of the table along with some potatoes and some cookies that Tate had made earlier in the day for dessert. “Darling, what are you doing here. Did you help Gator do all this?” I heard Kayce’s voice enter the room where he removed his hat hanging it on the wall.
“Actually I made all of this. I gave Gator the night off.” I responded by turning around to face him, finally getting everything set out.
Kayce came over to me wrapping his arms around my waist bringing me closer. He leans down kissing me slowly and I lean up kissing him back since we hadn’t seen each other much today. “You didn’t have to do this for us.”
“I wanted to, Kayce. It’s not a big deal.” I ran a hand through his tousled curly hair smiling brightly.
The front door opened another time with John entering the dining room seeing us break apart from one another going to sit down at the table to eat our dinner. “This all looks fairly good.” John sat down at the head of the table with me and Kayce sitting across from each other in the chairs closest to him.
“Thank you for saying that, John. I made the meal tonight.” I explained swallowing the bite of meat I had in my mouth.
John had always looked up to me considering I had made Kayce realize that he could be better and run the ranch even if he wasn’t keen to the idea in the beginning. Kayce and I had gotten together a few weeks after he had finalized his divorce with Tate’s mother.
Our meal for the most part went fairly well. Kayce and I had cleaned up the dining table with John leaning in the doorway watching us for a few minutes before saying a word. “Y/n, I’m just curious as to why you thought you needed to make us dinner. I’m not saying anything in it was bad, it was amazing. But I just want to know why.”
“How about we go sit down and finish this conversation.” Kayce suggested and we all agreed moving back into the dining room sitting back in our sports we were in a few moments ago.
I sighed brushing my hair out of my face, eyeing the man who I admired from the first moment I had met him. This family means everything to me and I wouldn’t trade any of my memories here for something else. I just prayed they valued me as much as I did them. “I just want you to know I appreciate y’all and want to be a part of the family.”
John stands up from his head seat at the table. “You are a part of the family.”
“I am. I don’t understand.” I sent him a confused face.
Kayce lowered himself down on one knee right in front of me. Reaching inside his pants pocket he slowly opened a small black box showing me a simple gold ring. “Will you marry me, Y/n?”
“You bet your boots I will.” I removed my hands from my mouth wiping away the heavy happy tears that had began falling down my face.
Kayce slipped the ring on my finger barely giving me time to admire it when he scooped me up into his arms. I squealed as he twirled me around in a few circles of laughter coming from the both of us finally sitting me down on the wooden floor.
I tucked hair behind my ear, eyeing the ring on my left finger. “Kayce, you didn’t have to buy me a ring.”
“Funny enough I didn’t buy that ring.” He shrugged his shoulders with a light chuckle.
I felt like my voice went to a higher tone. “Huh?”
“I can clear up your confusion, dear.” John came to stand beside his youngest son placing a hand on his shoulder sending me a proud grin with tearful eyes. “That ring was bought years ago by me when I proposed to my wife Evelyn. It’s her ring that I passed down to him.”
I felt more tears slipping down my face, stepping around my fiancé so I could hug my father in law. “Thank you so much, John. I’m honored to call you my father in law.”
“I’ve been waiting for you to become my daughter in law for a long time.” He hugged me back and I mirrored his smile. Kayce opened his arms for me and I raced forward where he picked me up off the ground when I wrapped my legs around his waist.
Kayce led me outside for me to see two horses standing at the end of the wooden stairs. He took me to my horse and climbed on our separate horses with me following Kayce on horseback wherever he was leading me. I knew most of the ranch yet where we stopped I had never been before. “Kayce, where are we exactly?”
“It’s a place I don’t go too often. This - this is where my mother got killed on her horse.” He explained to me slowly walking up to the fence holding my hand in his until we reached the fence.
I squeezed his hand, sending him a weak expression. “Kayce, I’m sorry.”
“It's okay. I told myself that when I found the right girl for me. I'd take her to meet my mom.” He explained simply looking down into my eyes.
A question fell from my lips. “You never took Monica here?”
“Given my fathers reaction got me branded. I figured my mother wouldn't have liked to hear I knocked up a girl in high school.” He rubbed the back of his neck, throwing his head back pushing that memory away about the brand. “Besides she clearly wasn't the one for me. You are, Y/n L/n.”
“To be honest I’ve been waiting for you to say those words for a while, Kayce Dutton.” I turned to face the cowboy draping my arms around his neck nuzzling my nose against his own.
He grinned down at me, wrapping his arms around my waist tugging my body against his chest connecting his lips with my own. “Well I’ve been waiting far too long to call you wife, my darling, my Mrs. Dutton.” Leaning my body into the kiss we stumbled slightly into the wooden fence just getting lost in kissing the other.

Is This You Asking Me Out
Tumblr media
Throwing my phone across the room I screamed seeing the unknown text message number from my ex. I wish he would stop calling me. I had moved back to Montana a few months ago and he had followed me wherever I went. He was a complete stalker of my life never wanting to let me go after I left his ass on the back porch of his parents house. Coming out of the bunkhouse I passed Kayce my bosses son. “Hey Y/n, where are you off to in such a hurry?”
“It’s not your business, Dutton. I’ll be back to finish up my missed work later tonight.” I brushed past him in a huff climbing in my truck and tracking his phone since he had told me where he was if I wanted to change my mind and take him back.
Walking up the stairs if his porch once I parked the truck slamming the door. I pounded my fist on the door seeing Joseph answer the door smirking at me. “Y/n, I was hoping you’d finally come to your senses. Come in and let’s make you for lost time.”
“Actually no that’s not why I’m here.” Crossing my arms over my chest I snapped at him.
He raised a brow at my words. “And why not?”
“Because you have been stalking me since we broke up. I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. I can barely breathe because I am so terrified that might come back and abuse me like you did when we were together!” I raised my voice at him stomping my foot on the ground trying not to cry in front of him.
Joseph stepped out onto the porch harshly grabbing me by my shoulders throwing me into the wall. “We are meant to be together, Y/n!”
“Joseph, I don’t care about you anymore!” I croaked out when he moved one of his hands around my throat until I heard a truck pull up and I gasped seeing the youngest Dutton. “Kayce?”
The cowboy made his way up the stairs grabbing my ex by the back of his jacket throwing his body against the fenced railing of the porch. “Get your hands off of her….are you okay?” Kayce came over to me gently pushing hair from my face seeing that my elbow was bleeding from when he threw me.
“What are you doing here…not that I mind it. But how did you know where I was going?” I asked gripping onto his forearm when he helped me to stand.
He responded before Joseph punched him in the rib. “Beth told me about what you told her. Then I followed your tracks - ugh!” He threw him down on his back where him and Kayce kept fighting until the former navy seal managed to overpower him.
Joseph grunted with Kayce holding his arms twisted behind his back. “So this is your new boyfriend?”
Before I had a chance to respond Kayce did for me releasing his grip on him. “Yeah I am, asshole.” He got to his feet offering me his hand and we quickly left the porch leaving my stalker ex on the porch.
Shutting the truck door we both remained silent on the way back to the ranch. Tapping my fingers on my knees I turned my head in his direction confused. “Why did you tell him we were together when we aren’t. You do realize that now he will come after you to get to me. Why would you do that to yourself?”
“Because I do love you, Y/n. It wasn’t a lie just to piss him off.” Kayce shifted his gaze in my direction lightly gripping the steering wheel. “Nobody should treat you the way he clearly does you.”
Blinking my eyes I couldn’t form a straight sentence when I asked the cowboy sitting across from me. “Is this your way of asking me out, Kayce Dutton?” Kayce and I had instantly became closer the first day we met. But I never thought the guy that was so close he could be my best friend also had feelings for me.
Kayce began turning the truck to put it in park on the side of the road undoing his seatbelt. “No, this is.”
“What are you doing p?” I asked with a half hopeful grin on my face watching his movements.
“I ain’t waiting till we get home to kiss ya.” He leaned over the counsel where I pressed my back against the front of it when he cupped my face in his hands. His brown eyes met mine before he crashes his lips onto mine gently.
I gasped taken back by the kiss before running my fingers up his chest. Moving my hands around his neck I deepened the kiss hearing him moan when I tugged on his hair. “Kayce, I love you too.” I mutter into kisses until we break it needing air to breathe.
“With that said I think it’s time I take you out to dinner, darling.” He sat back down in his seat putting the truck back on the road. Reaching across the counsel I intertwined my hand with his grinning like a child. I knew Kayce would never be what Joseph was to me. He would always be the guy I was meant to be with.

37 - You're my Evelyn, and I'm your John

Part 38
Country Rancher
Tags @whateverthecostner @rosie-posie08 @kaycejdutton @kayceduttonn @kcloveswrestling @the-morning-star-falls @kaymudd @hcwthewestwaswcn
Pushing some clothes into a suitcase Kayce and I had decided that we were going to a little cabin off the ranch for the weekend. Tying my brown boots and putting my hair up in a braid falling down my back. "I got my stuff in the truck and called the hotel so we are all set up."
Kayce came into the bedroom making the wooden floor creak underneath his boots. He tossed his hat onto the bed wrapping his arms around my waist from behind. "I have almost everything packed. Now we just have to tell the kids that we are going away."
"Are we sure it is a good idea to leave the kids with Lioyd and the bunkhouse boys?" He asked, resting his forehead against mine.
Running my fingers through his hair I pulled my head back looking into his brown eyes. "Look, I know we are worried about Bree's pregnancy. But as you said that we deserve a date night away from our children now and then."
"The last time we left Bree and Carter alone he got her pregnant-" He attempted to say.
Raising a brow at him I shook my head pulling myself out of his grasp shutting the suitcase lid and handing it to him. "That may be true, Kayc. But I know for a fact people didn't agree with what we were doing. Dancing around about our feelings forever. Now four beautiful children and a grandchild are on the way."
"I'll see you downstairs, darlin'." He sent me a nod grabbing his hat on his head leaving the bedroom.
Grabbing my brown jacket from the closet I headed down the stairs seeing that the kids were all outside on the porch since it was early in the morning. Carter was saddling his horse with the others getting ready for work since there are no weekends on a ranch. "Hey you guys. You're daddy and I are going out this weekend and we will be back on Sunday. So you will be staying here with Lioyd and the others. I just want you to promise me that you will behave while we are gone."
“You and dad are gonna kiss really loud again aren’t you?” Elsa asked where I made a face at her words especially when she mentioned her big sisters. They were smarter to notice these things than we thought they would at such a young age. “Bree did the same thing with Carter.”
Bending down on my knees I opened my arms and they both embraced me in tight hugs. “Alright kiddos. We will talk about that later. I love you guys and we will be back…Tate look out for them you understand.”
“Sure mamma.” He responded making me smile that he was comfortable calling me that even though I wasn’t his mother by blood. Walking down the stairs I got in his truck brushing my hands down the light blue dress I was wearing with my boots. Kayce said that we were going somewhere fancy since we didn’t have the kids but he wouldn’t tell me where we were going specifically.
The drive was normal into town before he pulled the truck into the parking lot. It was a large cabin that was an open window restaurant that overlooked the landscape of Montana. He pulled out my chair for me where I sent him a smile removing my hat sitting on the back of my chair. “I wanted to change up our lives. Considering the last time we had a date we had to rush and found the sheriff shot. So here’s to a redo darlin’.”
“Here’s to a redo, Kayc. I am rather surprised you put on a tie.” I pointed out that he was wearing his normal tan jacket and a dress shirt but it wasn’t a full on black suit that he would wear during a wedding or funeral. He was wearing a light tie alongside it.
The waitress came over eyeing Kayce until I sent her a glare showing her my ring where she dropped her smirk. “What can I get you two?”
“We will split the steak and some beers.” He told her where she glanced back at him while she walked away. Clutching my hands into fists on the table he reached across, making me shake my jealousy. “Easy honey. I married you didn’t I. You’ve got nothing to worry about from that girl.”
She brought our food back where we split the steak, eating quietly sending smirks back to each other. I wanted to tell him about what Jaime said to me the other night. It was weighing in on me and making me nervous about whether he might come after me. We finished our dinner and went back to the cabin that he had rented for the night. He pushed open the door letting me inside first where I leaned up on my toes kissing him for the first time tonight. “We don’t have to worry about the kids tonight cowboy…and I only say that because they said they could hear us.”
“Well they will understand one day. And I am not going to apologize for lovin’ on you. You’re just too hard to resist.” He wrapped his arms around my waist tugging me into his embrace. I smirked, wrapping my arms around his neck mirroring his smirk when he stared down at me like that.
He leans down, having me jump up and wrap my arms tighter around his neck. He moved his hands so he was holding me by my legs until we fell back onto the soft bed. “You don’t make it any easier for me either.” I declare running my fingers through his hair watching him reach for the bottom of my dress slowly pulling it over my head and tossing it somewhere on the floor.
Moving my hands up to the buttons of his shirt I started undoing them. At the same time he was untying the tie, yanking it over his head grinning ear to ear, crashing his lips onto mine hungerly. “I know that four kids is a handful but I could do this everyday with you…” He muttered, removing his lips down onto my neck making me moan the second he hit my certain spot.
“Kayce!” Gripping the brown curly locks he moaned, running his fingers over my body slowly entering me. We rolled underneath the covers enjoying the feeling so much more than I remembered. It didn’t take long for us to both reach our high where we broke the kiss panting like crazy.
He rested his forehead against mine before he flopped down onto my bedside. Rolling over to face him I gasped laying my head on his bare chest listening to his heartbeat. “I love you more than I thought I could anymore….Y/n you are my Evelyn.”
“Oh Kayce..” I could see tears forming in his eyes. Leaning up on my elbow I pressed my lips onto his where he smiled into the gentle kiss until I broke it. "How about we go to the bathroom hmm?"
He immediately jumped up tossing the covers aside and I squealed when he scooped me up in his arms carrying me into the bathroom. We both climbed into the bathtub throwing some water around onto the floor. He wrapped his arms around me where I sat on his lap deeply kissing me. "You are a brilliant woman. Stubborn as a horse and beautiful it makes me weak to my knees everytime."
"You really are trying to have baby number five aren't you, baby…" I moaned when he cupped my face in his hands tilting my head so the kiss would go deeper.
He broke it tracing some patterns on my bare shoulders smirking. "Are you saying you don't love me? I mean there should be a bunch of kids running around our ranch."
"You're ridiculous!" Splashing water in his face he glared at me pushing some back at md where we both now soaked but both grinning regardless. "Of course I love you, Kayce. In fact if I am you're Evelyn then you are my John."
Pressing my lips onto his I lay my head on his bare chest feeling him wrap his arms around my waist. He rested his chin on top of my forehead. "Bless my boots sweet girl. We might never leave this hotel room."
"I just might hold you to that, babe." I responded by lifting my head up when he crashed his lips onto mine filling the room with our desires of round two.

Kayce dutton x reader
Reader surprises kayce with lunch at his office
You're a Darn good Wife
Tumblr media
Here's the first official request on the new All Yellowstone blog!!! 😁
Parking my red truck outside the Livestock department office I pushed the driver door open and closed after grabbing the lunch bag of burgers from the place down the street. Entering the building I stopped at the front desk seeing the familiar blonde sitting there named Amy. "What can I do for you, Mrs. Dutton?"
"Is my husband in his office by chance?" I asked her.
She shakes her head no with a half smile. "He's out with the sheriff right now. But he should be back before lunch is over."
"Alright. I'll wait in his office. But don't tell him I'm here." I told her, wanting it to be a surprise for when he comes back. She nodded in agreement, watching me head around the corner out of her line of sight.
Opening his office door, I sat down the bag on his desk, scanning my eyes over the disorderly pile of paperwork he had on it. Sitting out the sandwiches and fries before plopping down in the computer chair scrolling on my cell phone until I heard footsteps coming down the hallway. “Good afternoon, cowboy.” I chimed in seeing him walk inside the office with a bright smile on my face.
“Y/n, what are you doing here?” He dropped his jacket on the hook by the door, opening his arms for me.
I rushed forward flinging my arms around his neck chucking into his shoulder. He wrapped his arms tightly around my waist kissing my hair clearly suprised I was there during lunch. “I thought I’d suprised you with lunch from that burger place you like near Bozeman. Considering we barely see each other with you working here and me working on your father’s land since half of the cowboys are up at the Summer Camp.”
“Well I’m certainly not gonna complain about any visit that involves you.” Kayce barely broke the hug gently holding me with his hands on my waist.
My arms stayed around his neck where I sent him a grin. “You better not like my visits. I did agree to marry you even when you told me you had a kid with your ex wife.”
“Hey, you love Tate.” Kayce gasped slightly offended.
I gave him a half smile tilting my head to the side reassuring what I had said minutes ago. “I’m just messing with you. I really do love Tate and treat him like he’s my own kid until we have our own of course.”
“You want to have kids with me.” Kayce’s face brightened at the words that had came out of my mouth.
I responded to my husband. “Of course. I told you on our fourth date that I wanted marriage and kids.”
“I was waiting to ask if we should start trying for a baby and now that I know that. I think we could start right now if you’re up for it.” He bends down on his knees quickly picking me up by my thighs and I wrap my arms around little tighter around hi neck even though he wouldn’t drop me.
I squealed when he carries me over to his desk and he slides some of the papers onto the floor without a real care in the world except me and him in that moment. “Kayce! What about the burgers?”
“Oh don’t worry we’ll be eating them when we’re done.” He smirked at me, moving his fingers down to the bottom of my shirt shrugging it upward and tossing it onto the floor with his own.
I scanned my eyes over his chest feeling my face turning red till I realized the door was still opened. “Wait a second. We have sex with the door wide open. I don’t think your coworkers would like that too much.”
“See we’ve got nothing to worry about. Especially when you’re a darn good wife who looks damn good to me right now.” Kayce ran slamming it closed and locking the door behind him before he rushed back over to me. He stands as close to me as he can possibly get cupping my face in his hands pressing his lips down onto mine.
Threading my fingers into the fabric of dark tan dress shirt seconds before I quickly began undoing the buttons on it and finally launched it across the office. “You better not waste those burgers. Dutton. Otherwise I will you regret your decisions later down the road.” I told before he gently pushed me down onto the desk and he sat the bag of food on the ground.
“Don’t you worry, baby. Once I get you pregnant you won’t be too worried about whether or not we wasted some burgers or not.” He smirked down at me, hovering above me till I wrapped my arms around his neck bringing him back down for another kiss.
He moved one hand over my hip and his other was holding his body up a little so not all of his weight was on top of me. “I’ll hold you to that promise, Kayce.” I broke the kiss where he smiled down at me, reconnecting our lips together and we let ourselves get lost in the other person.

Shopping with Beth Dutton
Tumblr media
Wattpad request - based off where Monica was getting accused of stealing, but instead it’s the reader. Kayce finds out what happened with you and Beth
Tag list - just send an ask to be added @tallrock35 @kmc1989 @pear-1206 @frost-queen @child-of-of-the-sunshine
Pushing around some clothes that were hanging on the rack I wasn't finding anything that I truly wanted to buy. Kayce, my husband is currently working as Livestock Commissioner now that his father John had stepped down to spend more time with our son Tate. Moving my bag up higher on my shoulder I turned to head out the door till the woman who owned the store got my attention. “Excuse me. Did you think you were just going to walk out of here without me noticing what you took.”
“I'm sorry, are you accusing me of stealing?” I looked over my shoulder at her.
She scoffed going behind her front desk and dialing a number on her phone. “Oh I know you stole something, outsider.”
I was definitely out of my element living here in Montana. My sister Summer Higgins and I had gone our separate ways. She had become an animal rights activist and I had gone and fell in love with the youngest son of a family with the largest land in Montana. Even though I was wearing just a red flannel shirt, ripped blue jeans and some muddy brown boots that went up to my knees almost everyone here could see I didn’t quite fit in. I was as the shop owner called me an outsider.
Taking out my phone I held it in front of my chest texting the first person I could think of that wouldn’t get physical with this woman. I knew if my husband found out he would only resort to violence and likely get arrested by the police. “The police are on their way.”
“I didn’t steal anything.” I spoke to her hiding my phone inside my back pocket.
The shop woman didn’t seem to buy what I was telling her. “I’m gonna find out what you took and you're going to pay for it.”
A few minutes later the police arrived. One man and one woman who approached the shop owner while I remained standing in the corner of the shop. “What seems to be the trouble here, ma’am?” The male officer asked her.
The owner pointed her index finger at me. “She stole something and was about to walk out but I know I saw her. Now she’s refusing to give it up.”
The female officer glanced at me. “Is that true?”
“No. She’s lying.”
The male officer held out his hand. “Can I see your driver's license please?” Handing over my ID he looked it over in silence.
“Search her clothes. She must be hiding it.” The owner snapped at me and I bit my lip wanting to roll my eyes.
The female officer gestured to one of the dressing rooms in the back of the store. I slowly walked back to the area and she entered the dressing room with me. “Take off your clothes.”
“Is this really necessary? I haven’t stolen anything. She’s lying to you just to get attention or something.” I rolled my eyes tugging my shirt over my head and dropping my pants, leaving me standing in my bra and underwear.
The officer looked inside my bra and inside my clothes that I had dropped onto the floor not finding anything there like I knew she would. She stood upright eyeing my underwear ordering me. “Remove your underwear and bend over so I can look there.”
“Are you freaking insane? I’m not doing that.” Raising my voice I crossed my arms over my chest. I wasn’t comfortable stripping in front of a stranger. I was only comfortable doing something like this around my husband. Kayce and I had a drunk night out at the bar and ended up getting pregnant with our son. It was a good relationship though, we already had feelings for each other before getting drunk and falling into bed with one another.
The officer glared at me with her arms across her chest. “Remove them or I will take you in for failure to comply with an officer.”
Slowly tugging my underwear down my legs I heard my sister in law's voice outside the closed curtains. “Where is she?”
“Who Beth?” the owner asked her.
“My sister in law.” The next thing I know the curtain got thrown open and my sister in law was standing in the doorway, staring at us. “I'm no lawyer, but I believe it's the 4th Amendment that deals with unlawful search and seizure.”
“This search is voluntary.” The female officer spoke.
“Sure doesn't look voluntary to me.” My sister in law didn't buy it, snapping a picture with her phone. “Leave her alone. Get dressed.”
Quickly throwing my clothes back on I found Beth outside pointing at the male officer and then the female officer scolding them for what they tried to do to me. “I went to high school with you. And you, you babysat her husband.”
“On her driver's license, her last name is Higgins.” The male officer pointed out.
She rolled her eyes. “I doubt that's gonna save you, buddy.”
“Thank you, Beth.” I replied to her with a kind smile, about to walk out the door till she grabbed my forearm.
“Just know I like you cause you eat steak.” She whispered before turning the open sign on the door to close and glaring at the shop owner and went around looking at her products “Wait. Don't go. You'll miss all the fun. Well, I'm here. Might as well shop. Oh, that's nice.”
“Nah. Not for me.” The next item she picked up was a glass statue. She suddenly smashed it against another glass object and smashed it on the countertop until it was completely broken into pieces.
“Beth, I think that’s enough.” I softly spoke towards her direction.
“And you. You fucking cunt, I remember when you gave out hand jobs for lunch money, Veronica. That was before the boob job and the dermabrasion and the doctor dumb enough to marry you.” Beth picked up another object from the counter that she hadn’t broken before picking up a dress and held it out to the woman. The shop owner took it from her hand trying to go to the dressing room but Beth wouldn’t let her. “That's lovely. Model it for me, would you? Oh, I think we're well past dressing rooms, don't you? Try it on here.”
I called out my sister in law's name thinking she had made her point. “Beth.”
“You know, it's not a "have to," Veronica. I can just keep smashing shit. Try it on.” Beth launched the object in her hands against a glass mirror and shoved some things off the nearest table, sitting down on it to watch as the owner removed her clothes. Beth got down and peaked inside her underwear scoffing under her breath. ““Ooh. Spanx. What a shocker. You know, you had an ass like a 12-year-old boy in high school. What happened? Now we're getting somewhere. Well, you're not a real blonde. What a surprise.”
Stepping around the owner I got in her face, slightly feeling sorry for her but she did the same thing to me just because she didn’t know who I was when I walked inside her place of business. “You didn’t know me and because of that you didn’t even give me the chance to explain how wrong you were. Just know I won’t be shopping here anymore and you better hope I never tell my husband about this.”
“Are you ready to go? I need a beer.” Beth asked me waiting by the door and I followed her out not thinking about the owner once we had left her store.
Once we had decided we had enough drinks at the bar and talked we made our way home and back to the ranch. Walking up the wood stairs and opening the front door I was taken by surprise seeing my husband sitting on the end of the couch with his gaze focused on me. “Kayce? I - I thought you’d be in bed.”
“Not when my wife gets accused of stealing and forced to strip in front of a police officer.”
Bringing a hand to my face I groaned in embarrassment, not wanting him to know what occurred today at that store. “You - who told you?”
“Beth.” He answered, getting up from the couch and pulling me in for a brief hug, mumbling into my hair. “Honey, why didn’t you think you could tell me about this?”
Muttering into his gray shirt I felt some tears welling in my eyes. “I didn’t want you to worry.”
“Y/n, I'm your husband. I’m always going to worry about you.” He broke the hug drawing back so I could see his face. His soft brown eyes looked at me like I was the only thing that mattered in his world, which was entirely true.
Raising a hand up to the side of his face he leaned into the palm of my hand. “Awe Kayce.”
“I love you.” He whispered, lending down and kissing me for the first time since he left to go to work this morning. I kissed him back gripping the fabric of his shirt, deepening the kiss till he broke it. He showed me a cheeky smirk on his face. “Tate is asleep. I know we’ve both had a long day and I was thinking we could go to bed hmm/”
“I’m down for anything, cowboy.” Grinning up at him I nodded, squealing once he had scooped me up in his arms bridal style. He carried me up the stairs and into his bedroom with us both tumbling down onto the mattress. Wrapping my arms around his neck I felt him rest his forehead against mine. “I love you.” Kayce pressed his lips deeply down onto mine, while my fingers knotted into his brown curly hair tugging on it and hearing a moan come from him. The evening became filled with flying clothing and heated kisses, getting completely lost in one another for the rest of the night. Being in a relationship with a Dutton is never easy, but when you need one of them they do come through for you.

Hello! I love Yellowstone and I love Kayce's character so much, your fics are great! I was wondering if you'd be willing to write a Kayce Dutton sickfic where there's like a flu or stomach bug or something going around and Kayce catches but refuses to admit it at first until an incident at the barn and the reader takes care of him??

Climbing down the ladder from the hay loft I kicked up some dust when my boots hit the ground a minute before I heard one of the bunkhouse guys throwing up in one of the horse stalls. Walking over to the stall I peeked my head inside finding Colby bent over throwing up his breakfast from this morning. “Colby, are you alright? You don’t look too good to me.”
“I’m fine, Y/n. Breakfast just- isn’t sitting right with me I guess.” He coughed wiping his hand over his mouth.
Stepping inside the stall I bent down on a knee wrapping Colby’s arm over my shoulder doing the best I could to help him get to the bunkhouse. “Don’t worry about work for today. I’ll make sure Rip doesn’t have your ass for taking a day off because you're sick.”
“Y/n. Colby, what’s going on here?” Footsteps came around the corner revealing Kayce to us. He had come from the direction of the main house and had seen us limping across the road.
I kept walking knowing Colby would feel much better once he got some needed rest. “Colby is sick. He puked in one of the horse stalls so I’m taking him over to the bunkhouse to get some sleep.”
“Here let me help you. You can’t possibly get him there all by yourself.” Kayce came onto the other side of Colby and slung his other arm over his shoulder. Together the three of us made our way to the bunkhouse. Removing Colby’s arm from my shoulder Kayce helped him sit down on the edge of the bed.
Brushing hair out of my face I watched Colby remove his boots and began laying down in his bed. “Thanks for your help, Kayce. I’ll stay here and help if he needs anything else.”
“I think I’ll stay. I don’t think you should be left alone with him.” The youngest Dutton son told me, leaning against the bunkbed with his arms crossed over his chest.
“Kayce, this illness has been going across the whole ranch. I have already had it so I am likely to not get it a second time. You haven’t got it yet so I’m telling you to stay away from here so you don’t get sick or especially get Tate sick.”
The cowboy wouldn’t back down unfortunately like I thought he would when bringing up his son. “I can’t leave you here by yourself. My brothers and sisters would never leave me alone when I was sick. And I wouldn’t leave one of them alone to take care of the other when they were sick.”
“Fine, Dutton. Don’t say I didn’t offer you an out when you had the chance.” I sighed, slumping my shoulders, turning my attention back to the sick cowboy who was passed out asleep in his bunk bed.
True to its word the illness was spreading across the Dutton ranch and had pretty much infected everyone, even Kayce. It had only been a few days since Colby had gotten better and was back to working the ranch. Walking up the wooden stairs and through the front door of the main house I entered the kitchen finding Beth grabbing a bottle of wine from the cabinet. “I got your text. Where is he?”
“He was in his bedroom the last time I saw him - now his ass is falling down the stairs.” She parted her lips before a loud crash rang through the house.
Nodding my head I spun on my feet strolling through the living room and stopping when I came upon Kayce laying against the railing of the stairs. “What are you doing, Kayce?”
“I’m going to work. What does it look like?” He scoffed attempting to get up but he started coughing and was grinning the wood for support.
Sending him a weak smile I sighed softly. “You should be in bed resting because you’re clearly sick.”
“I’m not sick. I’m going to work-“ He tried to take another step down the stairs yet he tripped when he closed his eyes. Racing forward I managed to catch his heavier body in my arms and held him up to stand more upright.
“I’m sorry you thought I was offering that as a suggestion. You are going back to bed this instant and going to get some rest because you are in fact sick.”
Dragging him back up the stairs and down the hallway I kicked opened his bedroom door. Leading him towards his bed I gently pushed him down onto the mattress and bent down to remove his boots. “Lay down and go to sleep, Dutton. I’ve seen it’s the best way to get over this. Oh and also eat a soup that Gator has made for anyone who has gotten this flu. I don’t know what’s in it but it sure as hell does the trick.”
“How have you not gotten sick after taking care of Colby?” Kayce asked me once I had gotten his boots off and was standing over him now.
“I was actually the first person to get the cold. I did my best to avoid the ranch but unfortunately Teeter got it from me and then it kept spreading from there until it landed on you.” Sitting down on the edge of the bed I dropped my gaze to my boots. “I’m sorry about giving it to you.”
Kayce closed his eyes, releasing a heavy breath, laying his head back on the pillows. “It’s okay. Don’t worry - I won’t let this cold keep me down for long.”
“Believe me, Dutton.” Shaking my head I walked closer to him gently placing a kiss on his forehead. “You’re just as stubborn as this cold is. I’ll let you rest now.”
Nearly walking away from him I turned on my feet but he gently grabbed my wrist keeping me in my spot. “Wait Y/n.”
“What do you need, cowboy?” I questioned him.
He gave me the soft puppy dog eyes with those deep brown eyes of his. “Lay down with me would you?”
“Kayce-“ I warned him.
He didn’t seem to care, gently tugging on my wrist he was still holding onto at this moment. “You said you’ve already had this cold. You can’t get the same cold twice I don’t think. So please will you lay down with me for a few.”
“Fine. But only for a little bit.” Slipping my hand out of his grasp I bent down removing my boots. Moving around to the empty side of the bed I crawled underneath the covers and laid my head in the crook of his neck.
Kayce shut his eyes and wrapped his arms around my waist whispering in my ear before I heard him start lightly snoring. “You’re a good doctor.” I smiled up at him relieved that he had finally accepted that he had gotten sick and had crashed out from exhaustion.

Sitting on the saddle of my light tan horse I eyed the bucking shoot that had a caff standing inside of it. The person manning the cage pressed the open button before the person keeping my door closed let it swing open and I raced out into the arena on my prize horse.
The young caff ran trying to get away from my horse but every move he made I jumped directly in front of him. My horse kicked its front legs scaring the caff into its pen shoot before I rode through the arena two or three times before fancy slide directly over to my team of horse trainers that I worked alongside.
“That’s all cowboyin’ is. You were right.” I chuckled galloping to the edge of the stands seeing Travis watching the whole performance.
“Are you saying you doubted me, Ms. Rodeo.”
Shaking my head, I looked down briefly. “No. I just mean - I'm surprised when you said -”
Travis and I declared in unison together recalling what he had told me when I had first signed up to work for him two years ago. “It’s you and a horse doin’ a job, tryin’ like hell to not let the other down.”
“Hey, do you know who that guy in the black cowboy hat is standing over there? He's been ogling you the entire show.”
Following the direction of where he was pointing I gasped instantly recognizing the person in question even from far away across the arena. “Kayce - I'll be right back. Watch my horse.” Dismounting my horse I passed the reins over to the horse trainer making my way across the arena.
Kayce and I had attended the same high school our whole lives. He worked on his family's ranch and I competed in the Rodeo competitions all throughout school. This earned me the nickname of ‘Ms. Rodeo” and Travis decided to keep calling me that the day I signed on with his team in Texas.
“Well hey stranger long time no see huh.” I strolled over to the edge of the fence, laying my arms on the metal railing once I had climbed up on the fence.
The youngest son of John Dutton bent his head down not expecting me to be this close to him. He simply planned on watching me from afar. “Oh hey Y/n, I didn't mean to interpret the show. I was just so curious about your performance.”
“You didn't mess up the show. But I am curious. What are you doing all the way out here in Texas?” Tilting my head to the side I bit my lip lightly.
He leaned his elbows on the railing looking over in my direction. “I came out to watch the show.”
“That ain't it. Tell me the real reason.”
He attempted another lie. “It's the truth. I came out here to watch the show.”
“So you're gonna tell your daddy back home that you just love watching Travis do Rodeo.” I teased him with a hand on my hip swaying back and forth.
Kayce threw his head back groaning at the conversation between the two of us. “Y/n!! I don't care about Travis and the performance he does.”
“But you do have someone that you love watching.” I climbed over the railing, jumping down until I was standing directly in front of him. “Who is it? What's her name? What does she like to do?”
Kayce rolls his eyes, beginning to walk away from me, avoiding the conversation rather than answer my questions. “You should get back to Travis. I bet he's waiting to celebrate your win tonight at his mansion.”
“Kayce.” I called his name and to my surprise he halted in his tracks, glancing over his shoulder at me. “Are you jealous of Travis?”
When we were growing up in school my friends would tease me about my feelings for Kayce. I contemplated telling him in our sophomore year but he had gotten some Indian girl pregnant and had to drop out and as far as I knew they were still together. I moved out here to work for Travis after he saw me compete in my last Rodeo competition in high school.
Unknown to me Kayce had only married Monica in an attempt to do the right thing and help her raise the baby, his son named Tate. But in reality he still carried a torch for the girl standing before him now.
Kayce shook his head trying to walk away. “I should start heading home. I have a long drive home. It was good to see you, Y/n.”
“Kayce, wait a minute.” Taking a few steps toward him I snagged his wrist stopping him from leaving where he stared down at me. “You don’t have to run off so soon. Stick around - we can catch up just like old times.”
He yanked his wrist from my hand lightly snapping at me. “I can’t be around you right now.”
“Why?”
He replied. “I can't tell you why.”
“Kayce, please don’t lie to me.”
Kayce snapped back at me sharply. “I'm not lying to you.”
“Then why are you so quick to run off after not seeing one of your old friends for the past ten years.”
He spun around stomping up to me grabbing my face with his hands, pressing his forehead against mine. He smashed his lips down onto mine and I gasped stumbling backwards until I realized how much I enjoyed kissing him.
Hell I had always dreamed what it would be like to kiss him.
Wrapping my arms around his neck I deepened the kiss earning a moan to slip past his lips. He threaded his fingers of his right hand into my loose hair nearly making my hat fall off my head until we separated needing to catch our breath. “I thought that you and Monica are - what brought this on?”
“You were right, I am jealous.” He breathes out shifting his gaze over to my team keeping his gaze on the man horse trainer. “I'm jealous of Travis. He's not good enough for you.”
Blinking a couple of times I hung my mouth opened realizing what he meant and why he would be jealous of me spending all my time with Travis. “Kayce, how long have you had feelings for me?”
“Since we were sixteen years old. I just - I married Monica trying to do the right thing. But things didn’t work out the way I thought they would so now I’m a divorce single dad.”
Closing the space between us I wrapped my arms around his neck bringing him in for a kiss. “I want you to know that there’s nothing happening between me and Travis. I can’t handle his high ego.”
“Really. You mean it?” Kayce asked with a hopeful smile on his lips.
Leaning up on my toes I captured my lips with his own muttering in between kisses. “You’ve always been worth the ride, Dutton.” He smiled, looping his arms around my waist, bringing me closer. Kayde and I got lost in each other so much that we didn’t realize that my boss Travis was watching us from afar.
He chuckled with a cocky smirk across his face. “Now that’s how you win over Ms. Rodeo.”

“Faith, sit down in your seat please.” I warned my daughter who was basically bouncing up and down in the passenger seat while I was driving the truck down the driveway on my way to take her to see her father since I felt bad they hadn’t gotten to spend time together since I had left him.
She sent me a half smile that only lasted about a second before she squealed. “I’m going to see daddy. I’m going to see daddy!”
“I wish I still had your energy, kiddo.” I shake my head, chuckling with the rest of the drive was easy enough with us parking outside the main house. Getting out first I opened the door and unbuckled her seat before she climbed over my body seeing her father coming down the steps.
Kayce barely caught her body in his arms. “Daddy!”
“Woah. If you get any bigger girl you might have to start carrying me.” He chuckled holding her up on his chest grinning up at her.
Leaning my back against the side of my truck once I had shut the passenger door. I felt bad for keeping them apart but I wasn’t sure I could let my heart fully care for the youngest son as easily as I had at 17 years old. “I’ll be back before dinner to pick her up.”
“Stay momma.” Faith reached out with one of her tiny hands extended out to me.
Kayce teased with those puppy dog eyes of his. “Yeah, stay with us, momma.”
“Don’t call me momma, Dutton!” I snapped, crossing my arms over my chest.
He bites his lip before smirking at me not being able to not tease me, had been that way since we were teenagers. “Momma Lissa Rae.”
“Faith, jump.” I ran forward where she jumped out of his arms watching me tackle her father into the gravel driveway. She laughed so loud, enjoying the sight before her. I moved my hands over his body, finding his ticklish spots that I knew far too well.
Kayce attempted to grab my hands and stop me but he couldn’t stop cackle in laughter squirming underneath my touch. “Alissa, stop - Lissa!”
“Will you stop calling me momma?” I asked, barely pausing on my tickle attack.
He released a breath staring up at me before rolling me onto my back, pinning me down in the gravel by holding my wrists down. “I can’t help it’s true. You are a momma.”
“Our daughters, not yours.” I stick my tongue out at him.
He smiled hoping my nose was getting up to stand then offered a hand helping me up off the ground too. “I’ll get back later just you wait, Lissa Rae.”
“Mommy, why does he call you that?” Faith asked tugging on my hand closest to hers.
Kayce picked her up in his arms, holding her against his hip. “That’s her nickname, sweet girl. Like how Grandpa John calls you Faithy Rae.”
“What’s your full name, mommy?” She eyed me with the curious eyes of a child.
“Alissa Rae Lambert.”
She stuck her tongue out at me. “Don’t you mean Dutton like daddy?”
“Oh yes. My bad.” I ruffled her hair playfully making my way back over to get inside my truck knowing I should probably help my family out with their cattle since that was where we were living currently. “I’ll pick you up later.”
Kayce slightly turned his body towards me, stopping me from leaving. “You could stay for the day. I’m sure your sister can understand that you should have time with your family.”
“Fine, I’ll stay. But you owe me for a few nights of babysitting Kayce.” I pointed my index finger at him with a warning look in my eyes.
The evening eventually rolled around where the three of us were all sitting in the living room just playing old games because that was one of the things our daughter liked doing besides riding horses all day like her parents. Laying on the couch in the living room I just silently watched the two play rock, paper, scissors for I think the 10th time in a row. “Three. Two. One. Rock, paper, scissors!”
“Oh come on. How are we matching each other?” Kayce slapped a hand to his forehead with his other hand and his daughter's back coming up with Rock. The reason they had done ten rounds simply because they had thrown out the same option for half of the game.
Faith giggled, falling on her back on the rug. “We’re mind readers, daddy.”
“My little telepath.” Kayce crawled over to her on his hands and knees till he was hovering over her and began tickling her stomach. That was her serious tickle spot where she cackled out in a fit of giggles.
Running a hand over my mouth it hurt me to not tell him that I was secretly seeing someone else even though we were married until death do us part. I feel like even if we split up we’d always find our way back to one another because we’re best friends and that bond lasts forever. “Faith, it’s gettin’ to be bedtime. You better get your little butt to bed if you want to stay the night with your daddy.” I looked at the time on my phone screen seeing it was almost nine o’clock meaning it was already past her bedtime.
“Five more minutes.” She begged me for those puppy dog eyes.
Kayce raised a brow glancing over his shoulder up at me where I gave him a silent look that he knew I meant business. “Not tonight, Rae Rae.”
“But daddy.” She whined with a sad expression.
He rose to his feet helping her up to her feet gently pushing her towards the hallway where her bedroom was and thankfully she listened to his order. “Not but’s, Rae Rae. You gotta get some sleep if you want to go riding tomorrow like we talked about.”
“Goodnight baby girl.” I kissed her forehead when she passed me and waited till I heard the bedroom shut before I went in the direction of the front door to grab my coat and boots to leave. “I’ll pick her up after I help my sister put some new saddles on our horses.”
“So we’re just not gonna talk about us before you leave huh?” My husband asked seeing me slip the sleeves of my coat on, keeping my back facing him the whole time.
“What exactly is there to talk about, Kayce.”
He sighed heavily, dropping his hands down at his sides in frustration. “You just pack up all your things and go back to your family's home. You take our daughter away from me and refuse to talk to me for longer than a few seconds. I want to know why.”
“Kayce, I’m not keeping your daughter from you. She’s sleeping down that hallway right now. So I don’t see the real problem you’re talking about.” I slowly turned around on my feet to face the rancher with my hands on my hips.
“I want you to explain what we truly are and why I saw you kissing one of my fathers ranch hands a while back.”
Taken back by his statement I knitted my brows in confusion and slight horror. “W-what. I haven’t been seeing anybody else. Why would you say such a thing?”
“Don’t lie to me, Alissa. I know you and Ryan are hooking up.” Kayce snapped sharply back at me. “I came over to your parents house after work and saw you making out in the living room.”
Completely changing my demeanor I ran my hands down my face snapping back at my best friend. “You've been spying on me then, Dutton. I can't believe you would do something like that. I'd never do something so hurtful to you!”
“Oh you mean cheating with another guy behind my back.” Kayce shouts back at me, stomping up to me until there’s barely any space left between us. “I’ve been thinking that we were still in this together. But apparently, we’re not in the same marriage that I thought we were in.”
Leaning up on my toes I pushed my nose against his, intensely staring into his chocolate brown eyes. “We haven’t truly had a marriage, Kayce. I became your wife but you’ve spent more time with Monica then me and I know why cause I have your family and my own whereas she didn’t have much. Your mother raised you to be a good person.”
“I’m gonna try to be better, to do better, Alissa.” He spoke down to me until I slapped him across the face, holding the side of his burning cheek.
“You say you’ll do better but I can’t believe anything you say anymore. When we were teenagers you promised me that we would always be together and protect one another. Our families revolve around each other and live the same lifestyle. Except looking at you now all I want to do right now is get as far away from you as physically possible.”
My best friend softly asked me a question I wasn’t expecting to come out of his mouth. “Are you saying you don’t love me anymore?”
“I honestly don't know.” I breathe out heavily, dropping my shoulders. “I don’t hate you but I’m not sure I love you anymore.”
Kayce blinked through some tears that had slipped out when the words came out of my mouth. “I think - you should go.”
“Kayce, I didn’t mean it like that-“
He held up his hands ordering me outside without another word. “Just go Alissa.”
“I’m - I’ll see you in the morning.” I muttered slipping out the front door and to my truck. Slamming the drivers door closed I hit my hands on the steering wheel, heavy tears I began sobbing not thinking this would be how my night ended.

Sitting on the back tailgate of my truck dressed in my Livestock agent clothing I had gotten called in to finish up paperwork with a family that had stolen horses from their farm. My supervisor didn’t say which family it was or told me I was about to see someone from my past, the reason I had taken a break from Montana.
The horse got pushed back into the pen by another gang of horses causing the family to cheer. One of the horse riders went over to the man of the household explaining a helpful tip so it doesn’t happen a second time. “Get yourself some trail cameras, put them somewhere nobody can see them and point them at this gate. If someone tries this again we’ll know who it was.”
“Thank you.” The man of the household responded with the horse rider coming over in my direction.
Squinting my eyes I attempted to get a better look at the specific horse rider. I felt I had seen him somewhere before yet couldn’t place it. “Oh crap. You’ve got to be shitting me.” The man removed his dusty black Cowboy hat running a hand through his messy brown hair, briefly glancing in my direction making it very obvious I knew him.
The man I knew from my high school growing up. I had always had a massive crush on him but once he had dropped out for getting a Native American girl pregnant I knew it couldn't happen. Jumping down from the tailgate I strolled over to the young Dutton son not expecting him to show up here. “Are you following me, Dutton?”
“What - Y/n. What the heck are you doing here?” Kayce dismounted his horse hearing someone speak to him yet when he glanced in the direction of the voice he certainly didn’t expect to see me.
Dropping my hands down at my sides. “Today’s my first day back. I thought I’d be working for your father unless he’s passed away or something.”
“He retired from being Livestock Commissioner. I took over the job which I guess makes me your boss now.” Kayce scanned over my face seeing my mouth hanging open when the words came out of his mouth.
“Oohh no way am I calling you my boss.”
He teased me with a smirk. “What would you rather have you call me hmm?”
“You’re husband.”
He blinked, standing there silently for a moment not saying anything. “I - I don’t know how to feel about this. I never thought - I never thought you felt that way about me.” During our years of high school I didn’t really show my feelings for the youngest Dutton son. I thought he’d never go for a quiet girl like me when he had someone else in his life. Sadly I shouldn’t have waited because now he was married and had a kid.
“I was going to tell you sooner but the day I finally got up the courage I saw you walking out of the school with Monica Long. The rest was history at that point from my point of view.” Tucking hair behind my ear I lowered my gaze to my dusty boots hearing him walking towards me, tilting my chin upward to meet his soft gaze. “Kayce, I understand that we can’t be together because of -“
“Monica and I got a divorce two years ago. I’m simply co-parenting Tate with her.” He explained focusing his gaze down onto mine. “I’m not seeing anybody are you?”
Shaking my head, I pushed my hands against his chest feeling like I was dreaming. “Hell no.”
“Good then there’s nothing wrong with me doing this.” Kayce declares cupping my face in his rough hands, gently crashing his lips down onto mine.
Fluttering my eyes closed I leaned into the kiss. I had thought of this moment for so many years and had thought that I’d never get the chance to be with him. “Is it too early to say I love you?” I whispered into the kiss wrapping my arms around his neck deepening the kiss that I wish we could go on forever if we didn’t need air to breath.
“Only if you don’t mind me asking you to be my wife.” He muttered in between deep heated kisses.
Breaking the kissing I drew my head back knitting my brows in disbelief. “Are you being for real right now?”
“Hang on a second.” He dug inside his pocket taking out a bracelet clearly made by his son considering it didn’t fit his wrist and looked to be the size of a wedding ring. He lowered himself down onto one knee taking my hand in his free one. “Y/n L/n, I’m sorry it took me this long enough to see you standing in front of me. I can’t undo what has happened in our past but I think this is our second chance. I refuse to lose you and wait another ten years before we see each other so will you marry me?”
Covering my mouth with my other hand I cried happy tears nodding my head yes. “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you.”
Kayce rose from the dirt ground kissing me gently once before he broke it reassuring me about the ring. “I will get you a better ring if you want.”
“I really like Tate’s. I wanna keep it since he’s going to be calling me mom in the future.” Placing one hand to the back of his neck leaving my other one to simply rest on his brown jacket.
He nodded noticing Rainwater walking over to us with the family that had just gotten their horses back, pulling us back to the reality that we were still at work. “We’ll explain to him later. Shall we get back to work, Mrs. Dutton?”
“Let’s go to work.” I tipped his black cowboy hat down, sending him a smirk before we turned walking over to Rainwater with our hands intertwined together.

hey girl, I have another request. Like early season 2 when Monica and kayce were fighting and then he spent the night in episode 4. Can we get something like that with the reader?
Breaking the Fortress

The Montana sky felt heavier than usual, mirroring the knot in my stomach. Kayce and I had been together for almost a year, a whirlwind of passion and quiet understanding that had blossomed amidst the rugged landscape of the Yellowstone. He was different from anyone I’d ever known – a man carved from the earth, loyal to a fault, and haunted by shadows that clung to him like the scent of pine after a rain.
But those shadows, I was learning, were a part of him, inextricably linked to the Dutton legacy. And lately, they had been growing darker, casting a pall over our relationship.
It started subtly. Increased tension when John Dutton was around. A curtness in his replies when I asked about Tate. A haunted look in his eyes that I couldn't quite decipher. It was like he was slowly retreating, building walls I couldn’t climb.
Tonight, the wall had become a fortress.
We were in the small cabin Kayce had built for us, a haven of rustic charm tucked away on a quiet corner of the ranch. The scent of cedar hung in the air, mingled with the faint aroma of the stew I’d been simmering all afternoon. It was supposed to be a cozy night, a chance to reconnect after weeks of him being…distant.
But the air was thick with unspoken words, crackling with a tension that made my skin crawl.
“Kayce,” I started, my voice barely a whisper. He was sitting by the fire, staring into the flames, his jaw tight. “What’s wrong? You’ve been… different.”
He didn’t look at me. “Nothing’s wrong, Y/n.”
“Don’t lie to me,” I said, my voice gaining strength. “I can feel it. Something’s eating you up.”
He finally turned, his eyes, usually so warm and inviting, were shuttered. “It’s… complicated.”
“Tell me,” I pleaded, stepping closer. “Let me in. We’re supposed to be a team, remember?”
The words seemed to trigger something. He stood up abruptly, his large frame filling the small space. “You don’t understand, Y/n. You can’t understand. You’re not… you don’t have the weight of this place on your shoulders.”
“The weight of what, Kayce? The Dutton name? The ranch? What is it that I can't understand?" I was growing frustrated. This wasn't the man I knew.
“Everything!” He exploded, his voice raw. “This ranch, my family, Tate… Monica. You don’t know what it’s like to be bound to this place, to have your life dictated by it.”
Monica. Her name hung in the air like a ghost. I knew she was a part of his past, the mother of his son. I’d never begrudged him that. But the way he said her name now, the pain in his voice, it felt like a betrayal. “Is this about Monica?” I asked, my voice trembling.
He flinched, like I’d struck him. “No. It’s not… entirely.”
“Then what is it, Kayce? Tell me the truth.”
He turned away again, running a hand through his dark hair. “It’s… I don’t know. I just… I need some space.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. Space. Was this the beginning of the end? “Space?” I repeated, my voice flat. “So, what? You want me to leave?"
He finally met my gaze, his eyes filled with a turmoil that mirrored my own. “No, Y/n. I don’t want you to leave. But I need… I need to figure things out. I can’t… I can’t be what you need right now.”
Tears welled in my eyes. “And what do you need, Kayce? Because I’m starting to think it’s not me.”
He didn’t answer. He couldn’t. The silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating. I turned and walked towards the bedroom, grabbing my bag.
“Y/n, where are you going?” he asked, his voice laced with a hint of panic.
“I’m giving you the space you need, Kayce,” I said, my voice thick with tears. “I’m going back to my place. When you figure out what you want, you know where to find me.”
I didn’t wait for him to reply. I walked out of the cabin, the cool night air doing little to soothe the burning in my chest. As I drove away, I saw him standing in the doorway, watching me go. The image of him, silhouetted against the warm light of the cabin, was etched into my memory.
The next few days were hell. I went through the motions of my life, but everything felt hollow. Sleep was elusive, haunted by dreams of Kayce and the unspoken words that hung between us. I replayed our conversation a thousand times, searching for clues, for answers.
I knew the Yellowstone was a complex place, a land of beauty and brutality, where loyalty and betrayal danced a dangerous tango. I knew that loving Kayce meant accepting his past, his family, his burdens. But I didn’t know how to fight a ghost, how to compete with a memory.
On the fourth night, I was sitting on my porch, staring at the stars, when I saw headlights approaching. My heart leaped into my throat. It was him. He pulled up to the house, got out of his truck, and walked towards me. He looked exhausted, his face gaunt, his eyes bloodshot.
He stopped in front of me, his gaze searching mine. “Y/n,” he said, his voice rough. “I’m sorry.”
“For what, Kayce?” I asked, my voice guarded. “For pushing me away? For making me feel like I’m not enough?”
“For being an idiot,” he said, his voice cracking. “For letting my demons get in the way of us.”
He stepped closer, reaching out to take my hand. His touch sent a jolt of electricity through me.
“I was scared,” he confessed. “Scared of letting you in, scared of hurting you, scared of not being good enough for you.”
“Kayce…”
“I was wrong,” he interrupted. “I need you, Y/n. I need you more than I need air to breathe.”
He pulled me into his arms, his embrace fierce and desperate. I clung to him, burying my face in his chest, letting the tears flow freely.
“I love you,” I whispered, the words choked with emotion.
“I love you too,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. "More than you know."
We stood there for a long moment, just holding each other, letting the silence speak volumes. Finally, he pulled back slightly, looking into my eyes.
"Can I come inside?" he asked, his voice barely audible. I nodded, and he followed me into the house.
The air inside felt charged, heavy with unspoken desires. He didn’t say a word, just took my face in his hands and kissed me.
The kiss was urgent, desperate, a release of all the pent-up emotions that had been simmering between us for days. It was a kiss that spoke of longing, of regret, of a desperate need to reconnect.
I kissed him back with equal fervor, letting my body melt against his. He tasted of whiskey and regret, and something else… something achingly familiar that made my heart ache.
He deepened the kiss, his tongue tracing the seam of my lips, sending shivers down my spine. He picked me up, wrapping my legs around his waist, and carried me to the bedroom.
He laid me gently on the bed and began to undress me, his eyes never leaving mine. His touch was reverent, tender, as if he was afraid of breaking me.
I reached out and unbuttoned his shirt, my fingers tracing the contours of his chest. He was hard, sculpted, a testament to the life he led.
We undressed each other slowly, savoring each touch, each caress. When we were both naked, he lowered himself onto the bed, his body covering mine.
He kissed me again, his lips exploring every inch of my face, my neck, my chest. He worshipped me with his mouth, his hands, his entire being.
I arched beneath him, moaning softly as he found my most sensitive spots. He knew my body intimately, knew exactly how to drive me wild.
He entered me slowly, filling me with his heat, his strength, his love. I gasped, arching my back as he began to move.
The rhythm was slow and deliberate at first, building gradually as our passion intensified. We moved together, a symphony of moans and sighs, our bodies entwined, our hearts beating as one.
The climax hit us both hard, a wave of pure pleasure that washed over us, leaving us breathless and trembling. We clung to each other, gasping for air, our bodies slick with sweat.
Afterward, we lay tangled in the sheets, our bodies still humming with the afterglow of passion. He held me close, his arms wrapped tightly around me, as if he was afraid of letting me go.
“I’m not going anywhere, Kayce,” I whispered, nuzzling my face into his chest.
“I know,” he said, his voice soft. “But I’m never letting you go again.”
We stayed like that for a long time, just holding each other, letting the silence heal the wounds that had been inflicted.
The road ahead wouldn’t be easy. The Yellowstone would always be a part of Kayce, a force that shaped him, defined him. But I knew that as long as we had each other, we could face anything. The weight of the Yellowstone might be heavy, but together, we could carry it. Together, we could build a life, a love, strong enough to withstand the storms.

“Get the hell off my property, Dutton. Stay away from my daughter and if you come back I’ll shoot you!” The front door of my childhood home got thrown opened and Kayce stumbled back down onto the wooden porch.
I stood in the doorway behind my father and the doorway where he had his shotgun pointing at his boots. “Daddy, please don’t shoot the father of my baby.” I begged him behind his shoulders.
He gripped the firearm in his hands. “He got you knocked up, honey. I don't wanna see his face ever again.”
“Mr. Lambert, I will be there for the baby. I swear I won't be one of the guys that runs after he gets his girlfriend pregnant.” Kayce slowly pushed himself up to stand up in front of my father.
I pushed my way through to be in front of my father and stand beside my best friend to support what he was saying. My sister had shown her excitement at being an aunt already. “Daddy, I want to keep this baby. And I want you to be able to be a part of its life.”
“Marlowe, the boy isn’t going to run on. You should give him some credit that he is willing to stay.” My mother touched my father’s shoulder gently while speaking to him.
Kayce and I watched patiently for his response. I was horrified that he was gonna disown me then and there. Especially if I followed Kayce. “Fine he can stay. But if he hurts you in any way. He’s banned from this property and from you two for life.” My father sent him one final threat.
Kayce slowly picked up his dusty black cowboy hat up from the porch. “I won’t let you down, Mr. Lambert - I uh - was gonna wait to do this. But it’s now or nothin’.” Kayce reached inside his jacket revealing a tiny black box while he lowered himself down on a knee right in front of my eyes.
I gasped, covering my mouth with my hands. “Kayce.”
“Alana, get out here now!” My mother hollered into the house.
My sister ran out the front door standing beside my mommy and daddy waiting in anticipation. “OMG!” She squealed, jumping up and down beside my parents.
“Alissa, you and I have always been together whether as best friends or romantically. I know we never planned on having a baby together so soon but I don’t think I ever wanted to be doing this with anyone else. So will you marry me and officially become a Dutton?” Kayce asked me holding up the ring, disregarding his cowboy hat at his feet.
Nodding my head, yes wiping away some tears. “Yes - yes Kayce John I will marry you.”
“Mrs Alissa Rae Dutton.” He slipped the ring on my left hand, raising himself up off the wooden porch.
I smiled, leaning up on my toes to kissing him. “I wasn’t expecting this from you. But I gotta say I ain’t complaining.”
“I’m just lucky you said yes cause I don’t think I could wait any longer to make you my wife.” Kayce wrapped his arms around my waist tugging me against his chest. He placed his black hat on top of my head drawing me in for a kiss.
Riding up on my light tan horse towards the open fence line back into the ranch housing and the barn. Tugging the reins of my horse he slowly walked to a stop before I saw Tate and Faith running around in and out of the open door barn. “You can’t catch me, Tater bug.”
“I bet I can. I’m the fastest runner.” Tate hollered back chasing after his what you would call half sister.
I dismounted my horse, tying the reins onto a post so that he wouldn’t run off while I went to see what game the kids were playing. I must admit that I was slightly nervous with Tate being here how my daughter would react since she’s normally the only kid around but she seems to enjoy him being here. Walking up to the barn entrance I leaned in the doorway seeing the kids climbing up the stairs to get to the raptors.
I heard horse hooves coming up towards the barn and came to a stop. I glanced over my shoulder throwing my hair around. I saw it was Kayce who came entering the building. “Hey baby, I thought you’d be out helping the cowboys like you normally do.”
“I was gonna but when I woke up this morning I figured I could just use a nice ride for myself.” I responded to him going back to watching the kids play.
Kayce comes from behind wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder. “What are ya thinkin’ about?”
“How do you know I’m thinking of anything?” I asked him, sparing him a glance out the corner of my eye.
He replied back. “Because you are always thinking of something when you bite your lip.”
“Really. How do you remember that?” I chuckled feeling my face turn a little after what he said next.
“I’ve only known you our whole lives.”
I snorted, shaking my head. “My bad I forgot.”
“So what are you thinkin’ bout?”
Slowly turning around in his embrace I draped my arms over his shoulders looking into his brown eyes. “Lately I - um - I think I want us to have another baby.”
“You’re serious-“ Kayce went to respond but got cut off.
Faith popped her head over the side of the railing gaining our attention for a second. “Mommy, daddy, can Tate and I jump down into the hay balls!”
“As long as you’re careful.” I hollered back up to her picturing that what they were about to do is something me and Kayce had totally done at her age.
She disappeared out of our view. “Thank you.”
“Okay so - back to what we were talking about.” I trailed off waiting for his response. I knew it was hard enough between him wanting to be involved with me and be there for Tate and Monica.
He paused, meeting my gaze nervously, smiling. “I’m not entirely against the idea. I just - with everything we’ve been through. I just didn’t want to pressure you into that unless you weren’t ready.”
“Does that clear things up for you, cowboy.” Leaning up on my toes I wrapped my arms around his neck drawing him in for a kiss.
He kissed me back deeply giving me a smirk before he tugged me in the direction of the main house. “It sure as hell does. Let’s slip away for a little bit, darling.” He leads me through the living room and upstairs taking me to our bedroom.
“With our luck we’re gonna have a baby in one try.” I smirked watching him shut the door with his boot.
Kayce reaches for the hem of my shirt pulling it over my head, tossing my hair across my shoulders. Wrapping my arms around his neck I drew him in for the first kiss and he hoisted me up by my thighs wrapping them around his waist never breaking the kiss. “I wouldn’t stop doing this even if we got you pregnant on the first try. You are everything to me.”
“You’re everything to me too, Kayce.” I grinned holding onto him when he started carrying me in the direction of the bed.
My back hit the soft silk sheets before I rose up from the bed staring at him softly and brought a hand to his cheek stroking it softly. He leaned into my touch and brought my fingers to his lips, kissing them softly for a moment before releasing them. Standing tall, he lifted his shirt over his head and threw it to the ground.
I began to move against him and leaned up pressing my lips down upon his. He embraced me back instantly when my fingers dug into his back. He ran his body over every inch of my body he could reach, both of us slick with sweat as he moved against one another, our pants and moans filling the room.
"Kayce!” I moaned out as his thrust became hard and fast, my boobs began to bounce up and down from the impact and tried to keep up with the rhythm he set but failed and just figured to allow him to be in control.
The bed was moving against our actions where he kept hitting the specific spot that we both moaned afterwards to. He broke the kiss where I held his face in my hands tracing his cheek with him thrusting into me slowly. "Alissa!" He moaned when I pulled his head downward burying my face in his neck nuzzling my nose and kissing into his skin.
So long as Kayce and I were together the Dutton Ranch family line would be in good hands.

Alana and I walked into the bar that we had driven into Bozzeman for drinks that night needing to get the thoughts of Kayce and our fight out of my head for a few hours. She went straight to the bar ordering us two shots each while I got us a table near the stage where a band had their stuff set up to preform. “Here we go, two rounds to drown out the asshole's memory.”
“I'm not sure this can erase our entire lives. But this is a good start.” I picked up the shot glass and she clinked her glass to mine.
“To starting to forget the asshole.”
We threw back the shot glass and I licked my tongue feeling the bitter taste going down my throat. “Woo. That's got some kick to it.”
“It's tequila, sis.”
I raised the glass in the air cheering with a wolf howl. “To more tequila!”
“Excuse me, ladies. Could I buy you another round?” Someone tapped my shoulder causing me to look back and see a guy with a small stubble on his face and light brown hair in a black cowboy hat.
Alana spoke up first with excitement. “Absolutely.”
“Sure. Thanks.” I sent him a smile seeing him stick his hand out towards me. “I'm Alissa.’
We shook hands before he went to the bartender. “I'm Ryan.”
“So what do y'all do for work?” Ryan came back over with three drinks sitting at the table with the two of us.
“Runnin’ my father’s ranch. The Lambert Cattle ranch.” My sister responded by leaning her elbows on the table.
Ryan sent me a look waiting for my response where I bite my lip tucking hair behind my ear. “I have worked for the Yellowstone since I was 16-17 until recently.”
“You’re working at Yellowstone. I'm a ranch hand for the boss there.”
Alana got up from the table suggesting to the ranch hand with a smirk. “Ryan, how would you and my sister get to talk some more with some free liquor back at our place?”
“Lana, what about Faith-”
She cut me off whispering in my ear. “I'll look after her. Don't worry. He's cute, have some fun for once.”
Having some fun is what got me pregnant, I thought to myself silently.
But I knew I deserved to not think how much Kayce had hurt me so I went along with the plan she had in mind. “What do you say, Ryan.”
“Sure. I'll pay the tab though.” Ryan responded before he followed us back to our ranch.  My sister went upstairs to watch my daughter while I poured a glass of beer walking over to him sitting on the couch where he went to take it from my hands till I put my lips down onto his. “Thanks-”
He sat the glass on the side table holding my face in his hands kissing me briefly. “No strings attached work for you?”
“Hell yeah.” He leaned forward beginning one of the many heated kisses that would lead us to the bedroom until he had to sneak back over the fence for work that next morning.
Kayce’s pov
Sitting down on my bed in my childhood bedroom that I still lived in now I removed my hat tossing it on the end of the mattress.  I had come home from picking Tate from school and dropped him off with his mom.  Laying on my back with my head on the pillow my gaze landed on the picture we had Alissa’s mother take of me and her daughter sitting on the tailgate of my beat up old red truck I had sold after she had told me she was pregnant to make some quick money.
Running a hand through my hair I muttered to myself remembering our teenage years fondly. “What happened to us, Lissa Rae.  How can we get back to what we had?”
We pulled up in the old red truck to a stop with the edge of lake water right in front of the tailgate.  I hoisted her up by the waist, sitting her up in the backseat of it before I joined her.  “I didn’t even know this spot was here.  I thought I knew every inch of this hometown of ours.” She chuckled, her gaze focused on the blue water.
“I wanted it to be a surprise when I brought you here.  It should be a special place when I ask you a certain question.” I looked down at her while she laid against my chest with my arms draped around her.
Alissa smiled up at me with a teasing expression. “And what question is that, Dutton?”
I smiled, closing the gap between us where we slowly kissed each other.  She gripped the back of my hair deepening the kiss until I broke it, resting my forehead against hers. “Will you be my girlfriend, Lissa Rae?”
“I thought you’d never ask, cowboy.” She grinned up at me capturing my lips with hers and we stayed like that for quite a while until we got tired then we headed back home as boyfriend and girlfriend, not simply childhood best friends anymore.
Unknown to Kayce that night his childhood friend and wife wasn’t thinking back on what they had.

Faith’s pov
“Faith! Faith, please just wait a second.” Cooper’s voice could be heard behind me as I took out my keys unlocking the truck door about to get inside until he pushed his hand against it, shutting it in my face. “Just give me a chance to explain.”
“Explain what exactly.” I snapped up at him, clutching the truck keys in my other hand. “You dropped out of college and you quit your job all the while I’m still in school not making all the wrong choices in this relationship.”
He dropped his other hand to his side. “I have a dream, Faith, it’s not a plan.”
“And what's the dream huh?”
“My plan was to learn all the positions on that work over crew. I didn’t plan on the whole crew dying on day two. Or meeting my crew member's widow and getting the shit beat out of me for becoming her friend. Or quitting my job after a lawyer insulted the girl that I love.”
Feeling tears welling in my eyes I wasn’t expecting him to say anything like this. “Cooper, you don’t have to-“
“Let me get this out, Faith. Please.” He begged me taking my hands in his own, deep gaze on me. “My dream is to run an oil company like a landman. Monty, my former boss runs everything and doesn’t quit until he gets what he wants.”
Blinking my eyes I asked him simply. “What about us - about our future then?”
“I love you. I love you. I took one look at you the day we met and I fell - hell I’m still falling. But I have no plan.” He declares stepping closer to me, cupping my face in his hands. “All I have is desire for you and you alone.”
I crashed my lips onto his closing the small distance that was between us. Leaning up on my toes I deepened the kiss gripping the fabric of his black tea shirt that he was wearing. “We should do this at the house, not here in the truck.” I spoke in a raspy voice pushing my hands against his chest, focusing my gaze up onto his.
“Okay, let's go.” He instantly agreed climbing into the vehicle and we raced back to the house. Cooper led me through the house living room and into thw bedroom that I had claimed as my own. Removing my boots at the same time my boyfriend did before I grabbed him by his shirt capturing my lips with his own. Cooper wrapped one arm around my waist bringing me closer, breaking the kiss for us to catch our breaths. “Wait, wait, wait. Are you really wanting to do this? I - I don't want to pressure you to do anything you don't want to.”
“Cooper, I love you. I want it to be you.” Tugging on the fabric of his shirt I began raising it up and he helped me get it over his head dropping it onto the floor.
My hands started to trace his form, I began to run his fingers up and down his chest softly while I began to feel his hand start to crawl underneath my shirt. He yanked my shirt off my head, throwing it to the ground only once breaking the kiss.
He glanced down at my clothed beasts staring at them deeply before reaching behind my back and began to unclip the straps off. I gasped at him instantly reaching a hand to cover my breast. He stood up from the bed and unbuttoned his jeans, tugging them down to his legs before stepping out of them wearing nothing but his boxers.
Cooper focused his gaze onto me leaning down, capturing my lips back onto his. “Tell me if you want me to stop this.”
“I don’t ever wanna stop, Norris.” Running my fingers through his knotted hair, sending him a cheerful smile. He nodded before we reconnected our lips and let ourselves get lost in the moment unaware of the horrible thing that had happened to my parents in the same timeframe.
Peaking one eye open I heard my phone vibrating on the bedside table in my bedroom. Reaching up I picked it up while Cooper had his arm draped over my body when I swiped the accept call button on my phone. “Aunt Beth, what - what’s wrong?”
“Have you heard from your parents recently?”
Shifting my body upright against the pillows on the bed I began to feel very nervous. “No. Why? Is something wrong?”
“According to your mother’s phone she hasn’t moved from one spot on the road for over a few hours. I think they might have gotten into an accident.”
Covering my mouth with my freehand I gasped in horror of the thought. “Oh my god.”
“What’s wrong? Are you okay?” My boyfriend woke up sitting upright touching my shoulder seeing that I was upset over something.
“It’s something about my parents.” Focusing back on my aunt I sucked in a breath needing them to be okay rather than injured or worse. “Aunt Beth, are you telling me you haven’t gotten a hold of them?”
She began explaining on the other side of the phone. “I have attempted to call them but neither of them have been answering me back. I’m going to follow their phone locations and you should too. I just thought you should know it might be something really bad. I have also called 911 and sent them your parents phone pin.”
“We'll meet you out there.” I hung up the call with her with me and Cooper to get dressed and scrambled to get outside to his truck and meet up with my aunt to figure out what happened.

9 - The Lambert Ranch

Part 10
Raised Fair Share Of Hell
Tag list @bvbwestfall @hcwthewestwaswcn @child-of-of-the-sunshine @elenavampire21 @keep-the-wolves-close @kmc1989 @tallrock35
“Mommy, why are we packing things up?” Faith asked while I clipped her into her car seat in the backseat of the truck.
Buckling her last seat belt strap I shut the passenger door getting in the driver’s seat pulling out and driving underneath the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch sign. “We’re going to live at your other grandparents ranch.”
“But why?” She asked me.
I paused before answering her question. “Mommy just needs a change of family environment for a little while.” Going down my family’s driveway I parked the truck in front of the house sitting there thinking back on the argument I had with her father a few nights ago.
I cared about him, I really do. But unless he was going to act like he was married to me and not married to Monica then I can’t be with him right now. Faith thankfully didn’t need to know the whole truth of what was happening between me and her father.
Flinging open my driver door I went around to unbuckle my daughter’s seated hearing someone riding up on their horse towards us. “What are you two doing here? It’s been a long time since you've come over to visit.” My sister Alana dismounted her horse bear hugging me.
“We're actually not visiting this time. I'm hoping that you haven’t turned my room into a den.” I chuckled back at my sister with a smile.
She broke the hug squeezing my shoulder and tipping her hat up just a tad. “Hey, that was daddy who wanted that. But don’t worry I didn't let him touch nothing.” She had her hair tied up in separate pigtails wearing a dark gray cowgirl hat.
I playfully rolled my eyes at her, unbuckling my daughter from inside the car. “But who threw me into the lake when we were looking for fireflies hmm.”
“Aunt Lana!” Faith cried running past my leg once I helped her out of the car.
She scooped up her niece with joy. “Hi there, you little stinker. What would you say to a ride on my horse?”
“Can I Mommy?”
Grabbing my old duffel bag I waved them on heading to the front porch. “Go on. Just be careful with her - momma, daddy, I'm home!” I hollered through the old cabin house sitting my bag by the front door shutting it behind me.
“Alissa, oh there's my girl!’ My mother Margaret came running into the room embracing me with a warm hug.
We remained hugging for a good few minutes until we heard a set of boots crossing the wooden floor and I instantly knew who it was before he said my name. “This is a surprise, Lissa. Are you just visiting like normal?” My father Griffin had a baseball cap on his head when he hugged me saying hello.
“I was hoping you and momma wouldn’t mind if Faith and I stay here for a while. Kayce and I sort of had a disagreement over his relationship with Monica Long.”
My father grumbled, breaking the hug between us. “I tried to warn you about that boy from the day he became a teenager.”
“Dad, I thought you got past your feelings for him after your granddaughter was born.”
He shakes his head no in discomfort. “It got a little better when she was born, yes. But I have secretly been counting down the days until you two finally broke things off.”
“Dad-“
My momma scolded her husband, nudging him on the arm. “Griffin, why would you say such a thing to her? Her and Kayce have been best friends for far too long for that to happen.”
“If things are going so well, Margaret. Then why isn’t she wearing her wedding ring hmm?” He pointed his index finger down to my bare left hand that I drew behind my back lowering my gaze to my boots.
“Oh Alissa I’m sorry.” My mother touched my arm gently.
My father glanced out the window figuring he should get started on getting the ranch set up for the evening since dinner would be done sometime soon. “I’m happy you’re back home, sweet girl. But I just thought I should tell you that I was right all along. I’ll be back in for dinner.” He stepped outside walking quickly down the stairs.
Tucking hair behind my ear I cleared my throat walking in the direction of my old bedroom right across my sister's bedroom. “I’ll start unpacking my stuff and then help with dinner, momma.”
“ALissa, don’t read too much into what your father said just then. You know he just never thinks anyone can be good enough for either of his daughters.”
Tossing my bag on my bed I unzipped it pulling out the clothes I had shoved inside and out onto the mattress. “It’s okay, momma. He’s allowed to have his opinion about him. I know the Dutton family ain’t perfect. I just didn’t think he still felt so strongly about this.”
“ALissa, hey just listen to me.” She managed to snag my wrist making me look into her eyes and stop what I was trying to do at that moment. “skinny dipping I don’t want you to think that you and Kayce can’t get through this little fight.”
I cut her off slightly, needing to understand I did it for my daughter and not for myself. “I did it for Faith because he wasn’t being there for her like she needs right now.”
“And I know that sweetheart. I just don’t want you to forget the reason you said yes when he asked for your hand and why you fell in love with him in the first place.” She finished her thoughts tucking some loose hair away from my eyes, exiting the room to finish the dinner she had started making.
Hanging up my cowgirl hat on the hook near the door I sighed heavily going to unpacking. “Don’t worry, momma. I can’t ever forget young Kayce if I tried.” I halted in my tracks eyeing a picture hanging in the round mirror that stood in the corner of the room.
The picture was very small but it was of me and Kayce chowing down on the last batch his mother had made days before she had died on her birthday by a horse. I would recall that evening for the rest of my life, because we made a pact to be friends forever.
My father had woken me and my sister up hearing a heavy presence of howling from some wolves near one of the Dutton’s pastures. Riding up on my horse he dismounted drawing out a flashlight gesturing for us to slowly come up behind him. “You two come here. Nice and slow, we don't want to spook them.”
“What do you think they’re after, daddy?” Alana asked, standing by my side.
Shifting my gaze throughout the darkness seeing other flashlights coming towards us before I heard John Dutton’s voice coming out. “Griffin, I need your help over here. It’s my wife Evelyn.”
“Sure no problem. Girls, be careful climbing over the fences.” Watching carefully my father dismounted his horse and climbed over our fence line to help our neighbor. My sister and I followed the same action that he did but I saw another familiar face come into contact with my flashlight.
I stalked forward whispering under my breath not afraid that of the wolves since the other cowboys had already scared them off. “Kayce?”
“Alissa.” He called my name in a shaky breath just sitting on the ground near where his mother’s body was laying before they had put her on one of the horse saddles.
Dropping down on my knees I could see he was traumatized over what he must have witnessed. “How are you doing, Kace?”
“I’m scared, Lissa Rae. I - I saw her die before the wolves came.” He sniffed through tears where I closed the distance between us, wrapping my arms around my best friend, sensing that he needs me right now in this moment.
He sobbed into my chest gripping onto my jacket. “She’s gone! I don’t know what to do.”
“The only thing that matters is that you have me, Kayce. I’m gonna be your best friend forever.” I whispered to him, sorry that he had lost his mother this way even though I didn’t know her all too well.
Kayce nodded, squeezing onto me for comfort. “Thank you - I’m not going anywhere either.” After a few minutes we followed the Dutton boys back to their main house doing whatever we could to help them out through the difficult time.
Faith had finally been put to sleep by the time I plopped down onto the long living room couch in front of the fireplace. Brushing my hair from my face I held the small picture in my fingers wishing we could go back to what we were. “Awe I forgot about that picture. Even then he was sneaking up behind you with that height of his.” My sister leaned over the couch with her arms crossed.
“Yeah, he was a stinker with that. How did moving the cattle go tonight? I’ll be sure to help you tomorrow since I’m living here now.” I glanced over my shoulder at her.
She rounded the couch sitting down beside me. “It went fairly well. How are you doing with the whole Dutton situation?”
“I don’t wanna talk about it. Give me a few days and I’ll talk about what is going on between us.”
My sister Alana shifts to face me with a smirk playing on her lips when she questions me. “Okay I understand that. So if you don’t want to talk about it, what would you say about going to Bozeman for a couple hours.”
“You’re just wanting to get me a date, aren’t you?” I teased her with a raised brow.
She put her hands together begging me. “Come on please. You - sorry we deserve a night of fun and if we happen to land you a date in the process that wouldn’t be such a bad thing.”
“Hmm, fine.” I agreed where she flings her arms around me giggling like a child and I hugged her back before we went to get ready to head to the bar, unknown that she was right I would find someone to distract me from my husband.

Alissa’s pov
Standing in the kitchen I waited on the oven timer to go off to tell me the biscuits I was making would be done, which not surprisingly were my eldest daughter’s favorite thing in the world.  Just like me and Kayce.
My phone rang from its spot laying on the kitchen countertop so I picked it up reading my daughter's name coming up on the screen.  “Hey baby.  Are you on your way here now?”
“Yeah.  Cooper and I left early this morning.  We should be there by dinner at seven.”
Hoisting myself up onto the kitchen island I kicked my legs slightly up and down.  “That’s good to know.  I’ll have Gator cook some of your favorites for dinner.  Does Cooper have any allergies I should know about?”
“No ma’am.” Cooper responded through the phone.
Biting my lip I made a silent note in my head hearing my daughter sigh through her end of the phone.  “Honey, are you okay?  What’s wrong because I can sense there’s something upsetting or worrying you.”
“I’m worried what daddy will think of him.  I mean I’ve never had any boyfriends growing up until now.”
Pausing for a moment I debated on what to say next to my daughter.  She knows her father loves her, but he's also super protective.  “Look sweetie, your father loves you.  He loves his family more than anything else in the world.  So I get why you're worried but as long as your boyfriend is himself and treats you right everything will work itself out in the end.”
“Thanks, mama.  I appreciate the advice.  We'll be there in a few hours.”
Hitting the end call button I hung up with them.  “See you then.” Sliding off the counter I went to help Gator make the dinner we would eat tonight.  My mom, sister, Rip and the rest of our ranch hands would be working to prepare for the branding that would be in the next two or three days.
The spread that would be laid out would be steak, potatoes and biscuits for dessert.
An hour later I heard someone walk behind me before familiar arms wrapped around my waist.  “Who got you to make biscuits hmm?” Kayce nuzzles his nose into my neck kissing the crook of it where my shoulder blade meets my neck.
“Our daughter is coming home for the branding while she's on fall break.” I responded, eyeing his hand that reaches for one of the fresh biscuits until I slapped it away with a spoon. “Hey, no!  Those are for dinner later tonight.  You can't eat them.”
“Ow! I just want one.  Plus you know Tate and Madeline will smell them any minute now.” He rubbed his hand I had previously smacked.
Bending down I opened the oven lid pulling out another tray of biscuits already prepared for what he had mentioned.  “That’s why I made an extra batch.  Now please get out of the kitchen.” Sure enough two sets of smaller feet came barreling down the staircase the second the delightful smell filled the whole lodge.
A few hours afterwards it was exactly seven o’clock. Changing into a simple light blue dress I curled the ends of my hair and slipped on some short black cowgirl boots.  Searching through the house for my husband I finally peaked my head outside the front door seeing him sitting on the front porch swing with a shotgun laying across his lap.  “Kayce John Dutton. What on earth do you think you’re doing with that shotgun?”
“I don't like the wind chimes.  They're gonna go in a second.” He came up with the best lie he could.
Putting my hands on my hips I scowled at him, noticing the particular chimes he referred to had been long gone.  “You mean the previous wind chimes that Beth blew up with that exact firearm over ten years ago.”
“Damn it.” He quickly realized that they weren't gone just like i did.  He avoided my gaze afterwards.  “I don’t want to tell you what I'm really doing with this.”
“Kayce  - tell me you're not thinking of shooting this boy off our porch.” Walking away from the door once I closed it, taking a seat beside him on the swing. He sent me a serious and silent look where I put a hand to my forehead.  “Why do I feel like I married my father nowadays?”
Kayce got slightly offended by my comment.  “Hey!”
“You’re telling me you don't see it in yourself right now.” Meeting his gaze I raised a brow at my husband, knowing he was smart enough to see it.  “We have three kids, one son, and two daughters.  Our oldest daughter has her first boyfriend and you're sitting out here waiting with a shotgun sitting on your lap.  And by my count you'll threaten to shoot him just like my daddy did you when he found out you got me pregnant.”
“I do agree with some of your fathers choices now - he’s here.” Kayce rose from the swing nearly launching me onto the ground hearing a vehicle coming down the driveway.
“Mmm!” I grumbled under my breath getting up from the swing watching someone get out of the driver's side and open the passenger side door revealing our daughter.  It was an old red and white pickup truck.  Kayce currently had the gun pointed up until I pushed my hand down on the long barrel, aiming the loaded weapon to the ground.  “Put the gun down Clyde.”
Kayce rolled his eyes, hating to hear our former nicknames of this town.  “Don’t make me start calling you Bonnie.”
“Thanks.  Mama!” Faith smiled at her boyfriend before noticing me coming down the porch steps.  Extending my arms outward for her she flung herself into my embrace with laughter and happy tears.
Kissing her hair I broke the hug so happy she was home.  “Ooh  I’ve missed you baby.  Now introduce me to this boyfriend of yours.  I can’t believe you told Aunt Beth before me.”
My daughter eyed her boots before tipping her cowgirl hat up slightly, walking us back over to the truck with Texas plates.  “I’m sorry, mama.  But anyhow this is Cooper.  Copper, this is my mother.” He had brown slightly curly hair stuffed underneath a red Texas ball cap, wearing a gray flannel shirt, dark blue jeans and dusty brown boots.
“Nice to meet you, ma’am.” Cooper held out his hand and I shook it gently. “Cooper, Cooper Norris.”
“I’m Alissa.  It’s nice to meet you.”
Cooper nodded lifting his gaze up to the porch with his entire body shivering a something.  “Is he really going to shoot me if I step up onto the porch?”
“Kayce!”
Faith turned her head to seeing exactly what I saw.  “Daddy!”
“Put the damn shotgun down before I come up there and kick your ass.  You’re gonna scare the boy shitless.”
Kayce slowly lowered the firearm glaring at the Texans boy, walking into the house carrying the weapon in hand.  “Just giving him a good warning.”
“So - um that’s my daddy, Kayce.” Faith nervously chuckled.
Raising my hands up I waved the pair up and inside the house, reminding myself to talk with my husband later about this first impression he just gave.  “Don’t worry I’ll make sure there’s no firearms at the dinner table.  Her father really is nice once you get to know him.” The three of us made our way into the house, where the two got settled on the living room couch for a few minutes.
The doorbell rang a few times with it getting thrown opened where I heard my sister in law make a lord entrance with her husband following behind her.  “Where is my biscuit lovin’ niece and this boyfriend of hers at!”
“Aunt Beth.  Uncle Rip!” Faith spun around on her boots, hugging each of them tightly with a huge smile on her face.
Footsteps came around the corner where we saw John and Gator coming out of the kitchen heading to the dining room.  “Dinner is ready and we're eating at the dining table tonight.  Oh so this is your boyfriend, Faithy Rae.  I’m John, her grandfather.”
“Oh god.” Covering my face with my hands I prayed my sister in law wouldn’t run the poor boy off.
Cooper shook John’s hand following my daughter into the dining room.  “Nice to meet you.  I’m Cooper.”
“Is there - a - specific seating or-“  Rip eyed the long table unsure of where to sit.
John took his seat at the head of the table, pointing to the front seat in front of his left arm.  “Wherever you want.  Faith, you and your boyfriend can sit right here.”
“Um Mr. Dutton?” Cooper removed his red Texas Tech ball cap holding it up.
His father in law responded watching Faith sit her tan cowgirl hat on the edge of the table.  “On the table is fine.  It looks formal, Cooper.  But it’s not.  It’s just supper.”
“Rough day at the office again?” Beth asked, seeing the anger written on her brother’s face.
Kayce answered with food in his mouth.  “Work isn’t what is bothering me.”
“Is it because you currently want to throw the Norris boy off our property?” Beth kept firing another question at her younger brother.
John placed his napkin in his lap.  “How about we don’t talk about threatening the boy at the dinner table.”
“Do you have that shotgun hidden underneath the table?” Beth asked.
Cooper stiffened his back up against the chair with his mouth full of food. “What?”
John glared at his daughter.  “What’d I just say?”
“What would you like to talk about, daddy?” Beth slammed her fork down on the table.  “Kayce is obviously uncomfortable about his daughter dating.  She’s his baby girl and his first born.”
John simply said her name.  “Beth.”
“Our house is filled with shotguns and other things.  Oh Cooper, did my niece mention to you that her father is a former Navy seal with advanced training?”
Faith attempted to reassure him that we were a nice family.  “We're just very protective of our family is all.  Family is everything here.  But don't worry he's not going to kill you , right Auntie Beth?”
John grumbled again.  “Beth.”
“If we don’t talk about my brother’s uncomfortable feelings over this dinner we have nothing to talk about.  Are you suggesting that we eat in silence and make it more uncomfortable for Kayce and Cooper.  Is that really what you’re suggesting?”
Rip finished his food quickly, getting to his feet grabbing his wife’s arm tugging her up from her seat.  “Thank you for dinner, sir.  Let’s go check on Carter sweetie.”
“Baby, what are we doing-“ Beth asked before we heard the front door shut behind them letting the whole house fill with silence except for the sound of people eating their food.
Awkward silence fell into the room with everyone staring at one another causing me to get up from my chair going towards the kitchen.  “Who wants biscuits, huh.  And while we eat those , Cooper you can tell us about yourself.”
“That sounds great. Mrs. Dutton.” He responded with my daughter placing her hand over his so he wasn’t as nervous.
This family dinner certainly wasn’t over yet.

65 - The Weight of Legacy
Tumblr media
Part 66
Raised Fair Share of Hell
- Tag list @bvbwestfall @hcwthewestwaswcn @child-of-of-the-sunshine @elenavampire21 @keep-the-wolves-close @kmc1989 @tallrock35 @whatelsecouldgowrong @lover-of-books-and-tea
The Montana sun was already a brutal hand pressing down on Tate's back as he wrestled with the recalcitrant gate latch. Dust devils danced across the parched earth of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, mirroring the restless energy churning inside him. Eighteen years old, and the weight of the world already felt strapped to his saddle.
He finally wrestled the latch open, the metal groaning in protest, and pushed the gate wide enough for the herd of Black Angus to lumber through. He watched them, a sea of black hides and twitching tails, moving towards the greener pastures along the river. It was a scene repeated countless times across generations of Duttons, a rhythm etched into the very soul of this land.
Tate kicked his horse, a reliable Quarter Horse gelding named Rooster, into a slow lope, guiding the stragglers. The air hummed with the drone of insects and the distant rumble of machinery. He ran a hand through his already sweat-dampened hair, the same burnished brown as his father's.
His thoughts drifted back to last night. The awkward silence at the dinner table, the strained smiles, and Faith's announcement hanging heavy in the air. Pregnant. At eighteen. He glanced towards the main house in the distance, the sprawling log structure a symbol of both strength and vulnerability.
He understood the burden of legacy, the relentless pressure to protect what his family had built. But Faith? Having a baby? It felt… wrong. Too soon. He wasn't judging her, not really. He just felt a raw, primal protectiveness towards her, and a sudden overwhelming fear for the future. He knew how his parents would support her without any hesitation, even his grandfather John would be there for her.
Pulling Rooster to a halt, Tate surveyed the land. Green meadows rolled toward the jagged peaks of the Absaroka Range, their snow-capped summits gleaming in the morning light. This was his inheritance. Not just the land, but the responsibility that came with it. The constant battle against developers, the government, and sometimes, even themselves.
He saw Carter riding towards him, a plume of dust trailing behind him. Carter, only a year older, had been through more than most men twice his age. He'd seen the dark underbelly of the world, a world Tate had been largely shielded from, thanks to the insulation of the ranch and the vigilance of his family. They had forged a bond over the years, built on shared labor and a grudging respect.
"Mornin', Tate," Carter drawled, reining in beside him. His face was weathered and hardened, his eyes holding a depth that belied his youth. "Heard about your sister."
Tate sighed. "Yeah. It's… a lot."
Carter nodded, his gaze sweeping across the landscape. "Life comes at you, whether you're ready or not. Just gotta deal with it."
Tate appreciated Carter's bluntness. No flowery platitudes, just a stark, unflinching truth. "Guess so."
"Rip needs us down by the south fence line," Carter said, turning Rooster towards the distant boundary. "Says the elk have been tearin' it up again."
They rode in silence for a while, the rhythm of their horses' hooves a comforting counterpoint to the turmoil in Tate's mind. The work was good. Physical, exhausting, and a welcome distraction.
The day stretched on, a blur of fence repair, cattle wrangling, and the ever-present dust. Tate worked alongside Carter, their movements synchronized, their communication minimal but effective. They were both extensions of the land, their bodies molded by its demands. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, Tate found himself near the creek that ran through the heart of the ranch. He dismounted Rooster and let him drink, watching the water ripple and reflect the fading light.
He spotted Madeline sitting on the bank, her small legs dangling over the edge. She was sketching in a notebook, her brow furrowed in concentration. Madeline. His little sister. She was eight years old, a bright spark of innocence in a world that seemed determined to extinguish it. He felt a familiar surge of protectiveness wash over him.
"Whatcha drawin, Mads?" he asked, approaching her.
She looked up, her eyes, the same piercing blue as his mother's, lit up with a smile. "Horses," she said, holding up the notebook. The drawing was childish but full of life, the horses galloping across the page with wild abandon.
Tate sat down beside her, admiring her work. "Those are good, Mads. Real good."
"Thanks," she mumbled, going back to her sketch.
He watched her for a moment, the silence comfortable and familiar. "You know," he said, "things are gonna be changing around here."
She looked up at him, her eyes wide with curiosity. "How?"
He hesitated, unsure how to explain the complexities of life to someone so young. "Faith's gonna have a baby," he said simply.
Madeline's face lit up. "A baby? Really? Can I hold it?"
Tate chuckled. "Yeah, you can hold it. But it's gonna be a lot of work. Babies need a lot of attention."
"I can help," she said confidently. "I'm good at helping."
He put his arm around her, pulling her close. "I know you are, Mads. You're the best."
He thought about Faith, about the baby, about the future of the Yellowstone. It was all swirling around him, a chaotic storm of uncertainty. But looking at Madeline, at her unwavering optimism and her boundless love, he felt a flicker of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they could navigate this. Maybe they could protect what mattered most.
Later that evening, after dinner, Tate found his grandfather John sitting on the porch, staring out at the darkening landscape. The old man was a force of nature, weathered and unyielding, a living embodiment of the Yellowstone.
He sat down beside him, the silence stretching between them. He knew his grandfather was aware of everything, of Faith's situation, of the challenges facing the ranch. He didn't need to say anything.
Finally, John spoke, his voice raspy but strong. "This land… it tests you. It breaks you. But it also makes you."
Tate nodded, understanding the weight of those words.
"Your sister," John continued, "she's young. But she's a Dutton. She'll find her way."
Tate looked at his grandfather, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and determination. "I'll help her, Grandpa. I'll help all of them."
John nodded, a flicker of approval in his eyes. "That's all any of us can do, Tate. Protect what's ours."
As he walked back to the bunkhouse, the night air cool against his skin, Tate felt a sense of resolve settle over him. The future was uncertain, the challenges daunting. But he was a Dutton. He was strong. He was resilient. And he would do whatever it took to protect his family and the land that defined them.
He passed Carter, who was leaning against the bunkhouse wall, smoking a cigarette. "Everything alright?" Carter asked, his voice low.
Tate nodded. "Yeah. Just thinkin."
Carter took a drag of his cigarette, the ember glowing in the darkness. "Thinking's overrated. Just gotta keep moving."
Tate smiled. "Maybe you're right."
He climbed into his bunk, the familiar scent of leather and hay filling his nostrils. He looked up at the wooden beams above him, tracing the lines with his eyes. He was tired, bone-tired, but he couldn't sleep.
He thought about Faith, about Madeline, about his unborn sibling. He thought about the Yellowstone, about the responsibility he carried. He thought about the future, a vast and unknown landscape stretching out before him.
He closed his eyes, and in the darkness, he saw the faces of his family, their faces etched with determination and love. He knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. They were the Duttons. And they would never give up.
