I knew who this article was referencing before I even clicked it.

Martha (Kaycee Stroh) was always a highlight for me in High School Musical. It was one of the first times I, as a fat girl myself, remember seeing a heavier actress cast in a role who's purpose wasn't just to be made fun of for her weight. It was SO refreshing to me. Her character has genuinely stuck with me in the back of my mind since way back then. (And it ended up being even better when HSM got really popular.)

It doesn’t surprise me at all that she faced backlash for that role. But it does make me incredibly sad that she had to go through that, especially with the impact she had on me, personally. I'm honestly so thankful for Kaycee and the writing team behind HSM who came together to create such a great character for fat representation during a time when p much ALL fat characters were only sources of shame and ridicule.

Now that it's been released, I can finally tell you guys about this: I made an appearance in the final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series! I'm in the opening scene of the first episode of Season 4. I've included a screenshot from the scene, with an arrow pointing to me. In other shots throughout the scene, you can clearly see my head, my hair, and my beard in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

martha cox truly was that girl like… her character clearly was meant to be a one off, even though in status quo she’s with a bunch of nerdy students and they’re talking about homework they’re notably not the students on the scholastic decathlon team, i don’t even think she was named in the first movie. like the skater boy who plays the cello, meant to be an afterthought to show how troyella auditioning is leading to ripples across the school. but she was just too iconic, miss pop and lock and jam and break (and that little twink from hamilton is like “is that even legal”) was so stunning that they got to the second movie and immediately knew they had to invite back kaycee stroh. probably didnt hurt that they wanted more friends for gabriella but still. what an icon.
