One small portion from JWave's Behind the Music that featured Kaze and his record producer Yaffle. Aired on 4 Oct, 2020.

Kaze: We're gon'be talkin 'bout the album HEHN but 'afore that, ahma rea' out this email here.

Question from listener (read out loud by Kaze): This one's from Eno. "What was the initial impression you had of one another when you first met?”  

Kaze: D’ye remember? 

Yaffle: Didn’t we meet at my studio? 

Kaze: Yea, yea, we did. 

Yaffle: I remember I only knew you from what I’ve seen on YouTube... 

Kaze: Ritey, rite, rite, rite... 

Yaffle: Ngl, I legit thought you were gonna be one of those dudes who’s all full of themselves. 

Kaze: Oh ye mean like the ones who’d go, “Yo, sup, Yaf?” Like they’re all that? 

Yaffle: Yeah like you’d be stabbing your arm down at me from above for a handshake. 

Kaze: Ok... 

Yaffle: Was what I imagined you’d be like but what I got was this meek and shy dude whom I could barely hear talk. Talk about a complete 180. 

Kaze: Well, that’s who ah am. 

Yaffle: You seemed like the stereotypical artist type to me at first.  

Kaze: Ah see. An' did ah live down t'yer expectation? 

Yaffle: That was just my initial impression. Because as time passed, your talking voice started getting louder... 

Kaze: Hehe yea... 

Yaffle: Then I realized that you were more flexible than you initially let on and my thoughts about you gradually began to change. 

Kaze: Ah see. Ah remember 'twuz jus' the two o' us talkin an' one o' the first things ah thought 'bout ye wuz that ye were very good at askin questions. 

Yaffle: Huuuh... 

Kaze: It felt like ah wuz naturally bein led thru an interview. Like, ye actually dug pretty deep down. 

Yaffle: Oh yea... 

Kaze: Ye were askin me stuff like what mah beliefs were... 

Yaffle: Oh right, I wanted to know where your thoughts and beliefs lie... 

Kaze: The fact that ye were a producer ah wuz able t'get into topics like that wit' wuz actually a huge relief. That’s the impression ah had.

Yaffle: Oh okay... 

Kaze: Like, 'twuz comfortin to know that ye were someone who wuz open t'knowin ‘bout stuff like that.  

Yaffle: I see... 

Kaze: So that wuz back when we first met and didnae know much ‘bout one 'nother yet. Here’s where the ball really gits t'rollin.

Yaffle: Right. 

Kaze: Wha' wuzzit again. Rite, let’s talk ‘bout the process o' makin the album HELP EVER HURT NEVER. 

Yaffle: K! Did you think we’d actually end up making a whole album? 

K: Nupe. Ah only wanted t'put out songs ah thought were worth puttin out an' mebbe en' up havin a collection o'those put out at some point.  

Y: Oh, you mean like a collection of just A-sides? 

K: Rite, that. Ah figgered if ah jus' concentrated on puttin out one good song at a time, ah’d eventually reach a point where ah’d have 'nuff fer a great album. 

Y: We recorded the whole thing on a 3-term basis, remember? 

K: Yea, it happened 'cross three separate terms.

Y: The initial set was NaN-NaNw, MOH-EE-WA and Yasashisa. 

K: Yep, yep. 

Y: Then they were followed by Choshinochatte, Tokuninai and...what was it again? 

K: Kae...rou...mebbe? 

Y: Yeah, it was Kaerou. 

K: Riiiite, rite, it *wuz* Kaerou. 

Y: And then the last five came... 

K: Yea we jus' rapidly shot them out like bullets 

Y: Yeah like rat-tat-tat-tat-tat! 

K: Yea like that hehe. 

Y: But we actually had about a year. I mean it was a 3-term period but it totaled to about a year. 

K: Yea, yea, that’s rite. 

Y: So during the first two terms, I really didn’t think it would eventually become an album. 

K: Yea we didnae think it at all. 

Y: I for one certainly didn’t think I’d end up working on it right until completion. 

K: Rite, rite, 'twuz still pretty early... 

Y: Cause at first, I was actually only asked to come in on a trial basis. Ah, this was before we met, by the way. 

K: Rite... 

Y: I was given this bunch of demos that sounded like a home recording with just this guy singing with piano accompaniment and then told to pick the one I like best. 

K: Rite, rite. 

Y: Back then, my first pick was MOH-EE-WA. 

K: That’s rite! 

Y: I told them that was my pick. 

K: Rite, that’s what happened! Ye picked MOH-EE-WA an' Yasashisa. 

Y: Well, MOH-EE-WA was my initial pick. When they later asked if that was it or if there was another, that was when I picked Yasashisa. But for some reason they gave me NaN-NaNw instead. That was what it was like from my end. 

K: Ohhhh so that’s how 'twuz...truth wuz, ah wuz actually havin me some anxiety issues ‘round that time... 

Y: Oh, really? 

K: Yea...the affection ah had t'wards mah songs were kinda too strong an' ah really wanted that feelin shared, adamant that people who dun' feel the same aren't people ah wanna work wit’. Ah even sent an email detailin my feelins, y’all. Cuz they were sendin mah songs one after ‘nother to this Yaffle sound producer guy so ah wanted desperately t'clearly get ‘cross what ah felt. It started out wit' sumthin like, “I am sending you this email in the hopes of further explaining some things to you about NaN-NaNw.” An' towards the end 'twuz like, “I know full well that this may sound ridiculous on many levels but I strongly believe that this song, together with the other two songs that were also selected, is going to be one that’s extremely important to both myself and to various other people. Please, I implore that you give it the love it deserves.” Sumthin like that.  

Y: Yeah...I definitely remember reading that. 

K: Ya remember? 

Y: Yeah, yeah I do. I recall. 

K: Readin all this out loud is so embarrassin tho...anyway ye replied, "I understand well all that you have said. Please rest assured that everything I am given to work with, I make sure to pour my entire heart and soul into and give them all the love they require. Let’s work together to put out some of the best works we can. Looking forward to an excellent partnership.” 

Y: Hm. That’s simpler and more concise than I remembered. My wording, that is. LoL.

K: Heh. Anyway, 'twas this part, “I make sure to pour my entire heart and soul into and give them all the love they require.” It struck a chord in meh an' had meh convinced.  

Y: Oh really? 

K: Yea. Cuz ye dun' really show yer feelins much which makes it hard t'know what yer thinkin most o' the time. So hearin that ye were actually goin all out an' pourin yer entire heart an' soul inta em wuz comfortin which made meh think ah should try trustin ye a lil mo'. 

Y: I see. I think I might have reacted to the whole email thing a bit negatively at first.  

K: Fer reals? 

Y: Yeah. When it first came, I expected it to sound something like, “Ya better do this properly! Don’t be half-assing it, ya hear?!” Which I was planning to retort with a, “What, you think I’m doing this just to mess around??” But then you were really polite and careful with the way you phrased it. 

K: Yea, like ah said earlier, ah wuz feelin super worried so ah wuz pretty much like an anxious parent goin, “Please, please take good care o'mah babies!” So if ah had ta be honest, yer prolly not wrong an' ah was basically sayin, “Ah’m beggin ye PLEASE do this prop'ly!”  

Y: Well, it was only like that in the beginning ‘cause we were both still very new to each other back then.  

K: Yea... 

Y: Plus we were going to be making songs together and all... 

K: That’s exactly rite... 

Y: So we had all these things going on between us. 

K: Yea, we sure did...

Fat raindrops from the recent storm drip from the open rear ambulance doors, pattering onto the bumper. A few find your head, wetting your hair and slipping down the back of your neck. They’re warm, as always. This is the muggiest damn planet you’ve ever visited.

Your hands are busy closing up supply bags and rearranging medications. Two, four, six—you count wraps, bandages, dressings. Up in the cab, Senaly—your partner for today’s shift—rests his long, curling limbs for the remainder of his break. Overhead, purple clouds roll and thunder rumbles, threatening more rain.

You’re about to close the doors when a sharp clack sounds to your left. Startled, you gasp and jump back, turning in time to see long, silver claws wrapping around the edge of the hatch. Shortly after, a shark-toothed, grinning face peers around the door at you.

Clutching your chest in relief, your breath leaves you in a hiss, “Fuck, Kaze, you scared the shit out of me.” Kaze merely chuckles in that dry, rasping hack you’ve come to understand as laughter.

“It’s alright Senaly,” you say, holding up your hand when your coworker unfurls from his seat, alarmed by your gasp. “I know him.” Senaly gives a trill of annoyance and falls back into his seat.

The rest of Kaze’s lanky form slinks from behind the door, all 6’5 of him. You guess he’d be nearly seven feet tall if he stood up straight. His gray skin is wet from the rain, taking on a sheen in the low, lavender light. As always, your eyes are automatically drawn to the thick, pale scar running from the crown of his head to just above his right eye. At his sides, long, lean arms and spindly fingers equipped with threatening three inch claws noisily click together as Kaze pops his knuckles.

When you finally meet his gaze, black eyes glinting with mirth, his face splits into a wider grin to reveal pointed black teeth. “My favorite human!” he exclaims, voice deep and impossibly gravelly as he slouches onto the bumper next to you. The dark spines curving along his back jut out further when he slumps. You count four with the tips broken off.

“How is it you always manage to find me when I’m working?” You cross your arms as you speak, leaning back against the opposite door.

“Just lucky,” he lies, flashing you a crooked smirk. The chunk missing from his top lip is more obvious at this angle. You respond with an unimpressed hum as your eyes rove over his form. You search for the wound. Kaze usually only finds you at work when he’s injured—

“Holy hell,” you murmur, finally noticing the blood pooling on the ground; black, like ichor. Kaze’s blood.

You rush forward, hands hovering as you hastily scan…. There, under his collarbone. His shirt is torn, the color of the fabric initially hiding his dark blood.

Gloves squeak as you pull them on before fiddling with the ties of his top. Kaze heaves an exaggerated sigh. “Fuckers ruined my shirt. Don’t they know I have to get these special ordered?” You shoot him an exasperated look but say nothing, focusing instead on your task.

You don’t know what Kaze does. You’re not sure you want to know. You guess it’s illegal as he never allows you to take him to the hospital.

Once, when he’d shown up drenched in blood that wasn’t his own, you’d considered notifying the authorities. Transmitter in hand, your trembling finger hovered over the button, brain screaming at you to push, he’s dangerous, he’s killed….

Yet, the urge had passed and you’d hung up the radio. Against your better judgement, you’d fixed him up as usual.

Kaze was from a Death World, like you. Class Six Planets—the Federation’s highest classification for hazardous worlds—are largely considered inhospitable, perilous, fit for only the most barbaric of beings. You think that’s why he’d approached you in the first place, and the same reason that stayed your hand. You understand each other on a level most beings cannot.

You peel away the torn half of Kaze’s top. The wide puncture wound in his chest bleeds freely, inky blood now starkly contrasted by the gray of his skin. You press a wad of dressings to the injury, holding pressure as you prepare the sterilizing solution.

Kaze quietly watches you work, pitch black eyes following every shift of expression. You pretend not to notice the way his lips twitch as he intently studies you. You tell yourself it’s not hunger in his gaze.

Ignorance is bliss, ignorance is bliss….

You don’t bother warning him when you dab the wound with antiseptic. He knows the drill well enough by now he doesn’t even flinch. Next come the sutures; you keep a kit or two hidden in the vehicle specifically for Kaze. His flesh requires a stronger thread than most beings you treat.

He breathes harshly though nostril slits when you push the needle through his skin. No anesthetic—he’d made that clear the first time you’d sewn him up. Apparently you also know the drill.

“Anywhere else?” you ask, snipping off the excess thread, gaze assessing his scarred skin. Kaze gives you a thoughtful hum and you raise your head to fix him with a questioning stare.

“I can think of a few places,” he murmurs, black tongue swiping across the sharp points of his teeth. Your eyes widen a fraction, throat suddenly too dry. Acute awareness of how close you are—your hips wedged between his thighs, the deep rumble of his voice felt in your own chest—hits you hard and your stomach drops, heart stuttering in your chest.

“Um—

It’s all you manage to push from your mouth before the echoing POP, POP, POP, POP interrupts you. Glass shatters, windows collapse around you in a flurry of shards and you’re rolling, tumbling sideways, bowled over by the protective cage of Kaze’s arms. He jerks you to the side, both of you crashing into the supply cabinets, and then he’s gone, leaping up off your stunned frame and disappearing around the battered ambulance door.

You move to sit up, but pain explodes along your side. With a cry, you fall back, gloved hands clutching your gut. They come away red as more nauseating agony stabs above your hip.

Bullet. It’s a bullet. You’ve been shot.

You tip your head back, searching for Senaly, the word ‘help’ on your lips. Your voice dies in your throat when you spot the damaged limbs of your partner lying eerily still. It’s a stillness reserved only for death, one you know well.

“Shit, shit—

You’re interrupted once more, this time by a rasping tune, crooned in time with slow footfalls and the harsh slide of fabric on hardened ground.

There’s a weird gurgle and a pathetic cry and Kaze appears once more, green gore splattered across his face. Behind him, he drags someone, and your eyes widen in horror when you realize Kaze’s massive claws pierce the being’s wide jaw, their hands scrabbling for purchase along Kaze’s wrist to ease the pressure.

Kaze spots you clutching your side, anguish twisting your features, and sighs irritably. “Look what you did,” he says to the being in his clutches, motioning to you. The victim emits another gurgle, the sound morphing into a wet scream when Kaze lifts, raising them clean off the ground until their limbs flail.

A shocked shriek tears from your throat when Kaze draws his free arm back and plunges his claws deep in the belly of the one you now understand to be the shooter. The muscles of Kaze’s arm pull taught and shift under his skin as he twists his wrist, the creature in his grip only able to drip and twitch.

“You messed up my favorite human,” Kaze explains calmly before ripping his hand free. Innards, green and slimy, follow quickly in its wake, slapping against the ground in a disgusting heap. You can’t look away, eyes wide, unblinking, stomach churning, heart hammering.

Dead…. They’re dead. Kaze just killed them right there in front of you like it was nothing.

A sharp crack and snap break the stunned silence as the being’s jaw rips away from their face, the weight of their body too great. They fall to the ground—squelch, thud—and you’re left staring at the exposed jawbone still impaled on dripping claws.

Face wrinkling in disgust, Kaze flicks the offending flesh away before stepping over the mangled corpse to approach. Hastily, you attempt to scoot away, but must freeze in place when stabbing pain wracks your body.

Kaze grins at the little hurt sound you emit. He reaches over top of you, digging around in a cabinet before producing a fresh bottle of antiseptic. Unceremoniously, he pops the top and dumps the liquid over his gory claws, leisurely cleaning each finger like he has all the time in the world.

“This the first time you’ve been shot?” he questions nonchalantly, surgical rag scrubbing his skin clean. Incredulously, you stare.

“Yes!” you spit, wincing with the effort. A raspy chortle is his only reply. Kaze examines his claws, twisting and turning them this way and that so they catch the light and gleam. Your lip curls, anger momentarily taking the place of fear.

“Are you going—agh—going to take me to a hospital or what?” you demand. He owes you this, at least, after everything you’ve done for him. You can feel your bloodied shirt sticking to your skin, the crimson puddle beneath you growing with every passing second.

“Lemme see,” he orders, smacking your hands aside to assess your wound. You try to push him away, but Kaze easily captures your wrists in one hand, effortlessly holding you in place as he lifts your shirt.

“Kaze, stop—

“Hmm, I don’t think it’s very deep. Must have ricocheted.” Is he talking to you or himself?

“T-That’s great. Can you please—

Kaze interrupts you yet again, lifting one, menacing claw to silence you. Black eyes flick to yours, the corner of his mouth curling up in a sly smirk when he meets your panicked gaze.

Once again, you realize how close he is; his legs are nestled between yours this time as he hovers over you. There’s fear in your chest, terror he’s going to sink that talon into your insides like he just did to that poor creature heaped on the ground. There are butterflies there too, awkward and warm despite your dire situation. That moment is fleeting, however, shy tension replaced by white hot agony when Kaze digs his claw into your wound.

Your scream rattles the interior of the ambulance. Desperately, you try to jerk your arms out of his iron grip, but it’s fruitless; he doesn’t even budge. His gaze is focused on your bleeding side, finger lazily rooting around in your gut as he searches for the slug.

“KAZE, KAZE STOP, PLEASE, STOP!” you wail, another wave of nausea and wretched anguish overtaking your senses. He says nothing, or nothing you can hear over your tortured cries.

Suddenly, your voice cuts out, vision blurring at the edges, thrashing legs dropping and stilling against the bumper. At the same moment, bloodied metal comes into your shrinking view, pinched between two claws.

“Found it—oh we’ve lost ‘em.” Kaze announces in feigned remorse as your head falls back onto the floor with a quiet thunk. Carefully, he pockets the bullet, then slips his arms under your unconscious form. Easily lifting you from the vehicle, Kaze steps over the shredded body once more before sauntering off down the street, humming a tune.

Overhead, thunder rumbles.

An open farewell letter to "idol Habu Mizuho"

I first met Habu-chan in 2017, when Keyakizaka46 had just released Kaze ni Fukarete mo. However, the first MV I saw was Fukyouwaon. 

When I really started following Keyaki, Habu and Neru were my favorite members. The people who were able to make me smile during one of the most tense periods of my life.

The love I felt for both of them turned out to be the same, so even though the term "kami oshi" can be summed up as a single person, I treated Habu and Neru as my kamis.

In 2019, when Neru-chan graduated, Habu-chan officially became my kami oshi. A position she still holds today, even after new members joined and I met other groups in the meantime.

I tried to find another idol to whom I could share my time, dedication, and love, but Habu-chan was unbeatable.

Over time, I became more and more obsessed with Habu (in a good and healthy way). Something about Habu-chan enchanted me in a way that no other idol had been able to before. 

I believe there were several reasons for this... 

One of them is the fact that we're the same age, we were both born in 1997 (I'm a month older ☺). 

Another may have been their physical appearance and personality. 

Habu has several physical aspects that particularly caught my eye: her hair (at the time I knew her best, it was mid-length), her height, her hands, and her neck (which I don't even accept is her least favorite part of her body). And over time, Habu became an extremely beautiful woman. In my eyes, she looked like a goddess sculpted by a superior divine force lol. Her personality was also an important point: Habu conveyed to me an energy of being someone extremely kind, cheerful, and positive; and this was confirmed over the time I spent being her fan. With each passing moment, I really realized that Habu was everything I had imagined. Confirmation of this came from her blogs, mobames, magazine, and radio interviews, which were corroborated by statements from Keyaki/Saku members, other co-workers, MCs, the habu oshi who took part in handshakes and meguris, etc. Everyone reaffirmed that Habu was an incredible person. 

One characteristic that I also came to admire a lot about her was Habu's ability to be good with words. Her iconic phrases (the funniest possible) and others full of meaning delighted me even more. 

But actually, I think what made my bond as a fan even stronger was that I followed Habu's growth and development as an idol.

She started to grow a lot as soon as she took part in the Girls Award (back in 2016, before I knew her), followed by her entry as an MC on radio shows (thanks to Chokotto yattemasu and Gochaten), as an MC in variety shows, taking part in Zambi's stage play, among other external activities associated with the group.

However I believe that her evolution as a model has been fundamental in making Habu-chan who she is today. Many thanks to JJ and CLASSY for giving her this opportunity and for signing her as an exclusive model in 2017 and 2021 respectively.

With this modeling career, Habu was the 1st member of the group to open an Instagram account, allowing the other members to also have this opportunity to interact more with fans, as well as promote the group.

Another pioneering move was Habu being the first member to have a fashion photobook, a departure from the usual standards for Sakamichi idols. And that's a story I really like because only I know how happy I was with "Destination" and the fact that it was exactly the kind of photobook I had always envisioned for her.

In fact, Habu-chan was a positive influence on me in the world of fashion. I've changed some habits and ways of dressing. I hope to continue following your fashion tips, Habu-sensei!

I could spend days and days telling you why Habu Mizuho is an exceptional idol. But unfortunately, the day of her graduation has arrived.

I've met many incredible people in the time I've been following her as an idol: Japanese ハブライバー (I could list several who have been super kind to me, but especially Masayo-san who was the person I had the most contact with during this time and who was VERY kind and helpful to me); ハブライバー from other countries and people who weren't even ハブライバー, but who supported Habu. I'm also grateful to have bonded with many different people, even though they live in different countries.

Now, seeing anything from Sakurazaka46 without Habu Mizuho will leave me with a huge feeling of emptiness.

I'm not sure yet how my relationship with the group will be after Habu's graduation. That's something I still can't answer...

But I'm very proud of the woman Habu-chan has become. 

I know that whatever path you take now, you will be successful and will have the full support of your fans. 

All I can do now is say thank you. 

I'm grateful for all the happy moments you've given me during your career as an idol.

I know I wasn't as "committed" a fan as other fans. I tried to do my best to support her within my capacity and my reality. I could have been a much better fan... But I hope that somehow you know that you have a fan in Brazil who has always and will always hope that only good things happen in your life.

Thank you so much for coming into my life.

And I'll be supporting you forever.

author’s note: part 2 as promised featuring Leo and Raph’s playlists! again all fun, no deep meanings, very self indulgent and from my own playlist!

Leo

Honestly I think he listens to a bunch of pop and rap, something that matches his crazy personality, Leonardo’s playlist names would be something like ‘MC Leon’ or ‘Best of the best’

You Get What You Give by New Radicals, (alt/indie, upbeat) he’d listen to this if he needed something genuine, something to help lift his mood, for when he’s in his feelings but the good kind, a dreamers anthem, ‘hope a ninja’s greatest weapon’

N Side by Steve Lacy, (r&b, chill) one of the more slower songs on his playlist, but still a love song, picture him in bed listening to this while reading a Jupiter Jim comic or something, knows the phone call part by heart and he acts in out in the shower

Perfect by One Direction, (pop upbeat) c’mon he likes boy bands on the down low, maybe even high key if he thinks the band is mainstream and definitely knows the words to this song, he just seems like a love song type of turtle

Shinunoga E-Wa by Fuji Kaze, (jpop, chill) one of the songs from Mikey’s playlist that Leo has claimed for his own, good music, though I imagine he’s probably as intense as the lyrics if anyone knows what the songs about, (maybe not that intense with a lover but yk what I mean)

CUFF IT by Beyoncé (disco pop, upbeat) this is it, this is his song, this is in his ears on a night out in the city, or his song choice to dance to in their arcade on Dance Dance Revolution, imagine him portaling around NYC with his brothers, possibly his theme song

Raph

If I remember correctly Raph was into soul music that one episode with the alberto animatronics, so other than jazz/soul I think he possibly could listen to these, playlist name ‘Boss Sound’ or ‘Big Red’s Hits’

Dark Red by Steve Lacy, (r&b chill) definitely has those elements of jazz/soul I think, bonus points for having red in the title, Raph would definitely do chores, chill around the lair to this one, maybe play it in his room on speakers, I don’t think he’d be ashamed to play any of his songs out loud

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane, (pop uplifting) Definitely thinks of his brothers with this one, so beautiful, so sad yet happy, hard to describe really but all around a lovely song, Raph appreciates this song I think as an older brother

The Game of Love by Santana, (r&b soul upbeat) the guitar, the chorus, so good, Raph could be working out to this one, he doesn’t need something hardcore, just good music to get him through, he’s shaking his hips to this for sure

Just A Gigolo by Louis Prima, (old school jazz) yep, just listen to it, he would have sang this on that albearto stage! right?! cmon someone has to see it this way too, easy to remember, imagine his deep baritone voice singing this for karaoke, he loves all the instrument solos

KOKIA in flashback - 2012

The year of 2012 is a stepping stone towards KOKIA's 15th anniversary in the next year. Her album cocorobakari ('token') this year is a collection of all B-sides of singles that so far haven't made it to a proper album release, going all the way back to the beginning of her career.

Her big concerts this year are called History, looking back on the past years and being an appetizer for her 15th anniversary. She also travels to Bali, Indonesia for inspiration, and opens her 15th anniversary website to count down.

The year starts off with a triple single release on January 25: the singles Memorial days, Hikari o atsumete ('gathering lights') and New Day, New Life all release on that day.

On a side note, this year KOKIA's radio show KOKIyakkyoku sadly ends, having started in 2006 and having its final broadcast on March 20 2012. On a happier side note, KOKIA has now upgraded her workplace to her own studio, meaning she won't have to rely on renting out studios so much anymore, giving her yet more freedom after her independence.

The songs we hear on this program were all performed live on the spot by Kaze (and requested by the host). He didn't know what's going to be requested beforehand so everything we hear is just him playing and singing from memory, which is why the lyrics to songs that aren't his may sometimes get a bit iffy, even if the performances themselves are heaven to the ears.

He's also not actually there in person at the station. It's a remote appearance that he made from Tokyo (I think the station the show was hosted at was in Osaka or something), since this was mid-2020.

- he joined the basketball team in his first couple of years in middle school but by his third year, he was the captain of the go-home-straight-after-school club

- high school was way too far from home (apparently it was a 2-hour commute by train one-way) for him to even consider after-school activities so the only club he joined was the Eng one which only required a once-a-week participation on Sunday, and might as well have been a ghost sorta club since it basically didn't do much else other than existed

- high school was pretty much like a music university with the kind of courses and lessons they offer (more than half the courses offered are music-based courses)

- couldn't be arsed to come up with lyrics for the second half of Kiriganai and so copied and pasted the first verse instead but it was hard to notice thanks to Yaffle's creativity and also the director of the MV

- working with Yaffle is a stimulating experience because the guy has interesting ideas and while they may not always see eye to eye with their individual ideas, it's always good to share different ideas

- he spent most of his middle school years fooling around with his friends (this wasn't detailed in the radio show itself so here's some extra info: in middle school he and a bunch of friends fancied themselves comics and came up with their own routines which they'd show the entire school and apparently they sucked because they got booed more than applauded)

- NaN-NaNw was written with the purpose of it being a debut song in mind, which he wrote in between the time when he graduated from high school to when he left Okayama for Tokyo

- he actually already has a huge repertoire of melodies that he composed with the intention of providing lyrics in English to at some point so now these unfinished songs exist in limbo with English-sounding gibberish as placeholder for proper lyrics

- he's also got some songs that he's written in Japanese from when he was still in high school

- his folks were pretty shocked that he could sing when he finally came out to them as a singer

- he's always had the intention to sing because even as a little kid he's always liked songs with vocals better than instrumentals but his parents (or rather his dad) seemed to think he'd be a pianist instead

- he's always been dead set on being a singer, never once entertained the idea of becoming a pianist

- thanks to growing up at a cafe where a lot of old Japanese music spanning across a number of genres was played 24/7, he probably has about a few hundred songs in his head that he can perform on the spot if asked, more if one also counted the ones where he only remembers the music and not the words
