Whom do you mean by low ranking? Abigail Spencer doesn't even qualify as a low ranking one. Americans do not know Nacho let alone his wife. Melissa McCarthy does, but I am positive she will end up a guest on M's new cooking show. So to answer your question, it's pure quid pro quo. It has nothing to do with having a chance to get close to the King, it just about making a living one humiliating job at a time.

More than 130 aircraft from the U.S., South Korea and Australia are participating in a joint exercise called "Vigilant Defense 24", which began on October 30.

Organized by the Seventh Air Force at Osan Air Base in South Korea, the exercise will last until November 3, focusing on interoperability between allies and a wide range of mission sets.

More than 25 types of aircraft are participating, including fighters, transport planes, tanker planes and reconnaissance planes, according to a statement from the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Korea.

The U.S. Air Force will contribute F-35, F-16 and A-10 combat/attack aircraft, as well as KC-135 air refuelers. The Air Force of the Republic of Korea will fly with its own F-35, as well as its E-7 for early warning and air control and the KC-330. The Royal Australian Air Force will contribute to KC-30A transport and refueling aircraft.

Colonel Michael G. McCarthy, commander of the 8º USAF Operations Group, said in a statement that opportunities like these are “truly invaluable to refine the necessary tactics, techniques and procedures that ensure that the combined force can operate as a cohesive unit, if we are called upon to do so.”

The statement of the 8ª Hunting Wing pointed out that the training exercise is routine, "of a totally defensive nature", and not in response to current threats or real-world situations.

During the five-day event, the U.S. and South Korea will practice the integration of different types of aircraft and different types of operations, including air defense, close air support and emergency air interdiction, according to the ROK Ministry of National Defense.

Another goal will be to improve interoperability and coordination between fourth- and fifth-generation fighters. South Korea has already ordered and started receiving 40 fifth-generation F-35 fighters and intends to buy 25 more in a deal valued at $5.06 billion, which was approved by the U.S. Department of State in September.

The joint training between the three allies brings the possibility of provoking a North Korean response. Last year's exercise, called 'Watchy Storm', featured about 240 aircraft from the U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy and Army, along with South Korea and Australia.

North Korea opposed the exercise through its state media. During and after last year's prolonged exercise, Pyongyang tested several short-range ballistic missiles and attempted to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile, which ended in a failure.

The leaders of the U.S. and South Korea have committed to conducting more regular and large-scale exercises together to strengthen the alliance and dissuade North Korea.

North Korea, however, continues to test new missiles. More recently, it fired two short-range ballistic missiles before a bilateral meeting between leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 13.

After this meeting, the U.S., South Korea and Japan criticized North Korea for providing military equipment to Russia against Ukraine, warning that such actions violate UN Security Council resolutions and could “significantly increase the human cost of Russia's war of aggression”.

The joint statement released on October 25 by U.S. Secretary of State Anthon Blinken and the foreign ministers of South Korea and Japan stated that Pyongyang is seeking military assistance from Moscow to develop its own capabilities. It also raised concerns about potential exchanges of nuclear or ballistic missile technology between them.

Russia and North Korea denied such exchanges, but satellite images and evaluation by think tanks indicate an increase in rail traffic and suspicions of ammunition shipments from Pyongyang to Moscow.

Re: my last comments about wanting to reread Lavender.

Have you ever thought about any differing OG Lavender-verse where Joel does get over his shit a little quicker? I’m still mad at him for *spoilers* being mad at her for not telling him about the thing. Like it’s so reasonable that she was going to but *things* got in the way. And what she went through to TRY to keep everybody safe… ugh. It’s telling how traumatized he is that he couldn’t get it together but I think sometimes he was too hardheaded.

Also, I never thought about it but as you say in the AU he’s her everything. That’s me & my now husband. He was older (6 years, not crazy) and my first and only. Now 16 years later and married and still very happy, maybe I appreciate that story element bc I relate ❤️

Spoilers for Lavender below the cut!

So there were a few points where things could have diverged in the OG Lavender-verse. The big one being, Doc doesn't lose the baby. He would still be traumatized as fuck and their relationship would be rocky but they may never fully break up (or, if they did, it wouldn't be for as long because Evie would force them to see each other and they couldn't keep their hands each other if they had to be around each other often.) Their relationship would have been ROCKY though and I'm not sure it would have lasted as Evie grew closer to adulthood.

There were some other points where things could have been different, too. The first time Doc leaves the QZ and it's just her and Joel and they run into raiders on the way back? By that point, Joel was kind of at this tipping point. He was so shaken by the near loss of her - and they'd just slept together the night before and had been in such close proximity for more than a day by that point - that he was very nearly ready to try to get her to give him another shot. Her freak out about the raiders - and her snapping and telling him that Sarah's death was NOT on her - pushed him the other way. Now if they'd gotten back together here, I'm not sure it would have stuck for long? She may have latched on tighter and not let him pull away when he started to devolve again but otherwise, he'd still be coping with a lot of the same trauma brain shit he was otherwise and it would have taken its toll.

Another time was after McCarthy comes to the QZ, when he finally knows everything that happened during the outbreak and feels so guilt ridden about it all. If they'd had sex that night, they'd have been together again at least for a while. But trauma brain Joel would have come along to ruin the party again.

The big thing is, the QZ was an inherently retraumatizing place to be, especially for Joel (the militarized power, being surrounded by death, etc.) and his brain going "HEY CARING ABOUT SOMEONE IN A PLACE LIKE THIS WILL LEAD TO YOUR DEATH" would, at the very least, make their relationship's survival a constant fucking struggle. The reason it sticks later is a combination of things. 1) He's at this unique point of "she's leaving and you will never see her again, you are losing her, this is the end" that forces him to admit just how much he cares about her in spite of trying to push her away for so many years. It also forces him to realize just how desperate he is to keep from losing her. He can't live without her, proximity (or lack there of) won't change that for him. 2) They're forced to stay together and work together to get Ellie to where she needs to go, so things that might normally force distance can't. She can't run to Andrew, he can't run to Tess, they can only turn to each other and they do. 3) They end up in Jackson, which is a far more healthy environment than the QZ, and - outside of shit like KC and stuff with the fireflies and a few blips along the way - the trek west is relatively peaceful compared to QZ life. Yes they're under threat and cautious and it's a struggle to survive BUT you're not being held at gunpoint by agents of the state and burning the bodies of dead children on the regular, a vast improvement over QZ life (and obviously major triggers for Joel.) This gives Joel some emotional space to come to terms with his trauma and start to heal and recover, pulling him out of this cycle of constant retraumatization. It's like with Maslow's hierarchy of needs. QZ Joel could never make it past that first level, when he constantly felt like his life was at risk he can't do the bigger work of healing and self actualizing. All his emotional energy is spent on survival. Once he has the space to do it, he can start to heal and be a partner to Doc.

ANYWAY I know I basically wrote a super long novel here lol! I hope it makes sense (and know that my interpretation is NOT the only valid one!!! It's definitely OK to be like "nah I think if they'd done x differently it would have worked.") I definitely get sad about all their lost years from time to time but I'm so glad they found their way back to each other in the end.

Raquel Watch Party Watch: Kansas City Bomber (1972)

So... Picking movies for Friday watch parties is always a challenge. We talk over the movies, so it can't be anything too complicated. It has to be fun because we're not watching a movie on a Friday to be miserable - and that's not the vibe for riffing, anyway.

While Raquel Welch is an international icon, and I wanted to use the Watch Party to celebrate her the week of her passing, and thus I was also looking to find a movie in which she played the lead. Plus, I like Roller Derby. So, I picked Kansas City Bomber (1972), not really knowing much about it. But that is not to say that I saw the trailers and was not dazzled that the romantic co-star was Kevin McCarthy. I mean...

Look, I'm not a an expert on 1970's filmmaking, but there are some various strains of what happened during the decade, and I don't think it's entirely a mistake that by the early 1980's we pivoted and movies have built on what some directors were doing during the 70's while what others were doing shows up in indie film but isn't what makes mainstream film or blockbusters. You can love Altman, but meandering movies with sprawling casts and confusing audio are not still super in vogue.

Kansas City Bomber (1972) could have been a fun movie about the wacky world of pro-Roller Derby, a third-tier sport that mixed actual competition with pro-wrestling hucksterism, ginned up rivalries and general ludicrousness. But this is 1972, and someone decided this movie needed to be a working class drama about a woman who rolls away from the life built on certain expectations that didn't work out. She's more or less abandoned her two kids from a failed marriage to live with her mother and she's making a living as a regional Roller Derby pro, a career that literally can't pay much. Which really just opens the door to all sorts of questions like: but why? and... what for? and... does this really pay any better than literally any other job?

It's a movie that - like a particular flavor of 1970's movie - believes we're to just catch snatches of conversations and bits of story with a sort of fly-on-the-wall observation of the characters more than ever being right alongside them. And, because our hero, KC (Welch) never says what's going on with her, it's a lot of inference. Which, as it turns out, is pretty tricky when it comes to movies and characters. We can kind of infer, gather and guess as to how KC is doing, what she wants, etc... but you're never really on sure footing. I'll argue, this can be done well. This ain't it.

The end result is that you get the feeling Raquel Welch, who is a good actor, is doing her best to turn in a performance as a lead - a messy, imperfect protagonist - and you're watching someone from thirty feet away through a screen door. The journey her character is on is hazy - it feels more episodic than a clear through-line as we try on some montage filmmaking.

Anyway, I like Kevin McCarthy. He's been a big part of making me enjoy many-a-movie. He is a supremely weird choice for the romantic interest for KC. He's got 26 years on her, and isn't exactly Tyrone Power and seems like a walking red flag (in this film).

The movie wants to show the They Shoot Horses, Don't They? lifestyle of the blue-collar world of Roller Derby. To that end we get a few predictable and not well fleshed out b-plots, like Jackie - the former hot skater who has lost her crown to Welch and is now drinking heavily. We have the Lenny-like Hank who has "doomed" written all over him because he is nice and not corrupt and exists to be a cautionary lesson to KC. I assumed Jackie would be the necessary "has a bad night and KC watches and then we never see the character again" character, but it was Hank.

BECAUSE ROLLER DERBY WILL DESTROY YOU.

Anyway, I appreciate what everyone thought they were doing. It's a shame it isn't a great movie because it has pretentions of being one. But this was kind of that era of film school grads deciding they were going to make "realistic" films, and with budgets what they were, we got Hal Ashby movies and even Scorsese films. And some of that works. And you have a whole lot don't work for audiences in 2023, I suppose. Or me, I guess.

If you're looking for a movie with well-drawn characters about Roller Derby, just watch Whip It! You'll be happier.

Does Welch look amazing in a roller derby uniform? Sir, that is not a serious question. Do I buy that she'd throw an elbow or knock someone over? I assume she did that, anyway, without direction.

Anyway, I wish I'd picked 100 Rifles, but here we are. I'll watch that one later.

Heading to Kansas City

We are taking a leisurely drive to Kansas City for the McCarthy family reunion. Have not had a road trip in a while. It’s always fun to get on the road.

Ok, maybe it’s not that much fun when you blow a tire on I90.

Thanks to Mavis tire in Johnstown, NY, we were back on the road, only 2 hours behind our no-schedule route.

We stretched our legs along the canal when we arrived in Indianapolis.

The gondoliers of Venice have nothing to fear!

After a stop in Columbia with Sister Sue, we all made it to KC.

On December 27, 1992, four U.S. Air Force F-16 fighters, led by Lieutenant Colonel Gary North, found an Iraqi MiG 25 that crossed the air exclusion zone in southern Iraq. The F-16 held the Iraqi aircraft in the air exclusion zone, preventing it from escaping north. One of the F-16s, arriving from the north, fired an AIM-120A against the Soviet-building fighter. In April 1991, shortly after the U.S. and its coalition allies expelled Iraqi military forces from Kuwait in Operation Desert Storm, the U.S. established an air exclusion zone in northern Iraq. This was soon followed by the establishment of a similar zone over southern Iraq to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 688.

This resolution guided the protection of Shiite Muslims against attacks by military forces under the control of Saddam Hussein, the Sunni Muslim dictator of Iraq, and a series of other sanctions. To support the resolution and protect the Shiites, the southern air exclusion zone covered the entire south of Iraq, from the 32-degree latitude line to the south to the borders of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The air exclusion zone applied to fixed and rotating wing aircraft, but in October 1991, the southern air exclusion zone also became a "d driving ban" zone and the U.S. Central Command Joint Task Force for Southeast Asia (JTF-SWA) was entrusted with the execution.

Generally, most Southern Watch missions consisted of fighter scans and patrols, suppression of enemy air defenses, aerial reconnaissance and air command and control using AWACS E-3 Sentry aircraft.

However, the air operations conducted by Saddam Hussein's air force during 91-92 showed that he had no intention of complying with resolution 688. In fact, as explained by Donald J. McCarthy, Jr. in his book "The Raptors All F-15 and F-16 aerial combat victories", countless military combats between coalition forces and Iraqi command and control systems, anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) sites, radar sites and land-to-air missile sites (SAM) occurred since the end of the Gulf War in 1991 until the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

One of the most famous clashes took place on Sunday, December 27, 1992, when an Iraqi MiG-25 fighter (NATO name "Foxbat") violated the air exclusion zone and entered airspace south of the 33rd parallel.

On that day, at approximately 10:42 a.m. local time, then captain Gary "Nordo" North (who piloted the F-16D "90-0778", indicative Benji 41) led a flight of four F-16s on a routine OSW Mission. While the Viper pilots were refueling from a KC-135, they heard urgent transmissions between a formation of four F-15s in the air exclusion zone and AWACS controllers. An Iraqi fighter (that F-15, having been close enough to obtain a visual acquisition, confirmed it as a "Foxbat") crossed the border to the air exclusion zone and was now accelerating north safely with the F-15 in pursuit. The Foxbat quickly reached the north of the 30th parallel and the F-15, now with little fuel, left the area.

As told by Craig Brown in his book "Debrief: a complete history of U.S. air engagements 1981 to the present", North and his wing refueled only enough fuel to allow them to cover the designated time at the station in the no-fly zone and crossed the border with southern Iraq while the third and fourth aircraft of their group continued to refuel. In a few minutes, the AWACS controllers ordered the two F-16s to head to an Iraqi aircraft heading south towards the thirty-two parallel to ensure that the Bogey did not cross to the air exclusion zone. A few minutes later, the AWACS controllers directed the Vipers to intercept another high-speed contact that originated in the north and crossed to the air exclusion zone approximately thirty miles west of the F-16 formation. The Iraqi fighter was forced to turn north safely before the F-16, armed with two advanced mid-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAMs) AIM-120A and two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, could attack him.

The AWACS radar monitored another aircraft, northeast of the F-16, flying south towards the air exclusion zone, but this time, while the F-16s flew to intercept the fighter, an Iraqi SAM radar began to track the Vipers. At this point, North ordered the third and fourth aircraft in his group, now fully charged with fuel, to fly north at their best speed. Again the AWACS radar reported a radar contact entering the air exclusion zone west of the Northern formation at high speed at 30,000 feet.

Nordo asked for a tactical displacement to the north to "fit" the F-16 between the MiG and parallel 30, creating a blocking maneuver and trapping the Iraqi fighter in prohibited airspace. The MiG could not escape back to Iraqi territory without fighting. "Someone would die in the next two minutes, and it wouldn't be me or my wing," North said.

North requested authorization to shoot by visually identifying the aircraft - a MiG-25 Foxbat armed with radar-guided AA-6 "Acrid" missiles. He instructed his ward to employ his electronic interference pod and again requested authorization to shoot. He finally heard "BANDIT-BANDIT-BANDIT, CLEARED TO KILL" about his headset. Approximately three nautical miles, fifteen degrees high from the nose and fifteen degrees from the right bank to the north, he blocked the MiG-25 and fired an AMRAAM, which led to the impact and totally destroyed the Foxbat built in Russia.

It took less than 15 minutes from the moment North left the KC-135 to shoot down the MiG. The video below is the original footage of the slaughter described in this article.

On October 28, 1998, Colonel Paul "PK" White interviewed North for an article of his own, "Nordos' MiG Kill", where North described the moment of the missile's impact: "I saw three separate detonations, the nose and left wing broke instantly and the tail continued in the main body of the jet and, finally, a huge fireball."

Noteworthy, this fight marked not only the first aerial victory won by an American F-16, but also the first shooting of an AIM-120 AMRAAM.
