the kpop music industrial complex really fascinates me tho. it really seems like a job rather than an expression of genuine artistic talent and emotion. which is not bad! manufactured pop is just different! but can see how it might be easier to have the boundaries up

my response:

i will have to say u r COMPLETELY wrong with ur last message some of the most innovative and expressive pop music of the last 2 decades has come from kpop and we are extremely proud of our artists. kpop idols r unparalleled in highly complex and experimental choreography with live vocals and performance skills in the present global pop scene, kpop dance is hugely influential in dance trends all over the world right now. and kpop idols are also very high profile in the global high fashion scene for ad campaigns and partnerships/brand ambassadorships and the kpop industry and high fashion industry are getting more and more tied together which is why the outfits are overall very interesting and experimental. this is not true for every kpop group but it is for the legendary groups.

the view of kpop as highly manufactured and inauthentic is a product of western imperialism both internally and externally. it's the orientalist tropes of robotic highly efficient soullessness combined with an overall inability to take pop music from colonized countries seriously. and also i would say the k celebrity world is much more communal rather than about individual artists like it is in the west. every korean knows the famous producers stylists choreographers vocal directors lyricists mv directors every kpop project is seen as a huge collaboration. there is no such thing as truly individual authentic big name big production pop music and kpop just makes very clear who had a hand in creating the final product.

the kpop scene is also very fast moving and trend motivated so i have a hard time keeping up and the expansion of the scene in the last even 5 years is truly mind boggling it's difficult to understand how short the history of kpop is. the originator of the hallyu wave is only 34 years old and she's been performing for 20. and then there's the fact of kpop being specifically made to be an export and a representative of south korea on a cultural pseudo-diplimatic level. the idea of public perception is specifically aimed at other countries so a certain level of authenticity is just automatically not there.

the flip side of this is that the origins of kpop are from US military occupation of korea and attempts at the south korean wartorn neocolony gaining imperial soft power for economic benefits with structures that are holdovers from japanese occupation so there's a lot of pain and exploitation and misogyny involved

also yes of course it seems like work, kcelebrities are known for working to the bone and rarely getting sleep even if they are very famous and this is seen as necessary and expected. being a celebrity is lot of social responsibility in south korea and it's very easy to lose relevance or the goodwill of the audience for culturally specific scandals like inadequate respect for industry seniors or acts of apparent immorality. so celebrities have highly private lives and the ones that stay employed are ones with squeaky clean reputations under the dominant social norms of south korea for good and for bad.

Close but Far

I live in a country where K-celebrities come often, but I never met any K-celebrities due to my family’s hatred for Koreans. Is it wrong to like Korean culture? I think my family had some bad history with Koreans, but calling Kpop, Kdrama, and Koreans in general stupid is a bit too far. I feel lucky that my friends are K poppers too. At least I have someone to talk to. I hid so much Kpop merchandise that sometimes I forget where I hid them LOL. I just want to meet my faves once. Is it wrong to meet your idols?

okay time to get serious

so i haven’t been part of this fandom for long but shortly after i joined there was stuff about one of the members, and i was so worried because, even though i haven’t been a part of any other kpop fandom before, i’m familiar with the kcelebrity world and what happens when celebrities get hit with rumours. but after days i hadn’t seen much about it, and what i did see was mostly ‘respect their privacy’ etc. and i was so proud because i realised that carats didn’t care. well, we cared in the ‘as long as you're happy’ sense but not in the ‘omg we need to find out everything about this’. and then the whole thing just died and i had never been prouder to be part of this fandom.

as i said, i haven’t been part of a fandom before so this might be common behaviour, but this is the fandom i’m in and i sure am happy with it :)
