One of the notable triumphs of Soviet Cinema was Sergei Esienstein's development of the Montage. In the interest of time I'll simplify years of film history and analysis to a much shorter explanation: showing two or more images in series gives new meaning to them by forming a relationship through context. A man with a neutral expression is just a man, but by cutting to a slice of cheese we register his expression as hungry, or loving if we cut to a child, or scared if we cut to a snake. There, now you can skip film class and show this post to your professor as proof of attendance.

Cut together more abstract visuals and run them in series and you develop themes and narratives. Set them to a landmark musical score and you have Koyaanisqatsi.

Koyaanisqatsi is a movie about the imminent destruction of the planet. It's a movie celebrating the human race. It's a documentation of the anthroposcene. It's a condemnation of modernity in its very title, translated from Hopi to mean "life out of balance." It's a movie about how cool highways and nuclear reactors and military jets and brutalist architecture are. It's a great film to put on at parties.

Going through a particularly stressful point of my life right now, and at the peak of my distress I decided to spend the night in, turning out the lights and sitting on the floor, letting Philip Glass' enchanting score wash over me as I sat mesmerized by the film's celebration and condemnation of life out of balance.

This is cocomelon for film majors. I mean it, Koyaanisqatsi is the perfect film to put on in the background of a houseparty. It's like an Apple TV screensaver for the sophisticated. With Philip Glass to provide the atmosphere and rich visuals of 16mm timelapses, this is the perfect non-narrative for setting the artistic mood of a space. This is the most pretentious thing I've ever said and I wholly stand by it.

Go watch Koyaanisqatsi. It's an unmatched experience.

So I'm looking through the announcements section of the most recent alumni magazine, and the jock himbo science bro I was in a summer flirtationship with to get over my ex (who I was furious with because he broke up with me because I was staying in our college town for the summer to work and he was going home to the Cities and then he had the audacity to change his mind and stay in our tiny college town and drink at MY bar) and who I last saw when we were both completely wasted at QTs 2 days before my graduation now has a baby???? And he looks like a dad????

Anyway, gonna lay on the ground, listen to Iron & Wine, and contemplate my own mortality.

Now extremely fascinated in Brett 👀

ghfdghdkjfg Okay so Brett doesn't have a design and I don't have a lot of information on him but take what I do have!

Brett is a frat boy that met Tael and Emil while he was getting matching tattoos with his bros. (The tattoos are various animals that people typically see as 'pests' [i.e. raccoons, pigeons, squirrels, etc] holding flowers.) Tael was using Emil to show off some healed/aged examples of his work.

Brett was the only one that asked if Emil was a vampire, upon confirmation that Emil *is* a vampire he started asking if it's true that he drinks blood. Yes.

Could he eat normal food if there's blood in it? Yes, but he can also- just eat normal food but it doesn't really have too much benefit.

Wait, so could he eat a subpath sandwich?? Yeah???? No fucking way, guys get the tattoos I'll be right back.

and thus the journey of Brett getting Emil various human foods just to see what would happen when he eats them began. He also usually gets something for Tael but sometimes it slips his mind.

He usually tips like 50% when it comes to getting tattoos so while Tael gets a bit annoyed by the food antics, he tolerates Brett bc he's overall pretty good/decent!

He also did get that tattoo! His was a skunk holding a lily of the valley :>

While he mostly learned Tael's name (He thinks it's Teal and not Tael) he never learned Emil's name. But he knows he's kept in the basement!
