main take away from Witch's Heart gaming today is that I love Claire Elford so fucking much her joyous whimsy and feeling like she needs to keep strong despite the situation and how she is just so doomed no matter what despite not deserving it at all. and also Wilardo idk why exactly though. it's probably the bit where he gives the diary over to Claire because he would have had every reason to not at that point. someone was dead and anyone could have done it and he just found something linking her to the dead person. but he still goes and gives it to her anyway. that just stuck out to me for some reason..

YTTD: 'Goddess of Victory/Angel of Death'

I've been replaying YTTD and one of Keiji's lines to Sara (Chapter 2, Part 2 in Miley's Room) stuck to me:

"Are you going to be our goddess of victory... or our angel of death? / It doesn't sound too bad to bet my life on that."

And it got me wondering whether or not this may be foreshadowing for the events yet to come; in particular, the outcome of the Emotion Route and Logic Route in particular.

Spoilers for all chapters below the cut!!

I think that the 'Goddess of Victory' title will fit Sara in the Emotion Route, and 'Angel of Death' will fit her in the Logic Route. So far, the Emotion Route, Sara is prioritising teamwork and the group's wellbeing and survival, whereas in the Logic Route, she is having an inner conflict with herself as she's having thoughts of betraying the group. Thus, I've assigned the title 'Angel of Death' to her in the Logic Route, and 'Goddess of Victory' to Sara in the Emotion Route.

So what does this mean for the routes?

If this line was actually foreshadowing the future events of the different routes, then from inference we can determine what may/may not occur.

Goddess of Victory and the Emotion Route

Goddess of Victory - 'Goddess' implies admiration, worship, and leadership. Victory, in this context, I assume meant surviving the death game WITH all of her friends (or at least the surviving cast we have currently - Kanna, Keiji, Reko/Alice, and Gin). And we do see this kind of admiration from fellow participants, especially considering Sara has taken her place as the 'leader' of the group. Thus, it can be inferred that in this route, Sara would lead them all into victory. It would perfectly align with the title 'Goddess of Victory.'

Angel of Death and the Logic Route

Angel of Death is easy to define - an angel (messenger of God, holy, good) bringing about death. The contradictory nature of an 'angel' and 'death' implies that in this route, Sara would continue to act 'good'; act as the group's leader, continue her charismatic act, etc. all while bringing about death. And we've already seen this. Using her charisma, she's manipulated Ranmaru to kill the surviving Yabusame sibling. Extrapolating on this, it would imply that the other surviving candidates (Keiji, Gin, Shin) die as a result of Sara's desire to survive.

And while we're at it, I'll go and look at the second part of the quote:

"It doesn't sound too bad to bet my life on that."

This could also be foreshadowing regarding Keiji's fate. While it's pretty speculative for me to be like "in this route they live/in this route they die" because of this line I'm more confident in saying that maybe in Emotion Keiji lives and in Logic Keiji dies as a result of this 'bet' he's placed on Sara. If she becomes the Goddess of Victory, he survives at her side, his trust in her paying off. If she turns out to be the Angel of Death, he dies at her side, his bet lost.

Ranking YTTD Characters on Who Has Friends (outside of the game)

Special Mention: Midori - has a parasocial relationship with everyone, but they all hate him

Joe - Has friends! Lots of friends at school, and he'd say he's the winner, because he has Sara!

Reko - She's really close with her bandmates, and they're like family to her

Sara - Has Joe and Ryoko!

Anzu - Has an entire clown car full of clownworkers who love her, and treat her like family

Mishima - had a lot of friends in his old school days gang of bad boys, but disconnected from them when he got older, and started to get busy with work. They reconnect a few years later, when they've cleaned up their lives, and go out together to have dinner once a month and talk about things

QTaro - Gets along great with his baseball buddies, but those are technically coworkers, so they don't count as friends

Hayasaka - The guy at 7/11 who smiles at him with pity when he buys a redbull, and mixes it with a black coffee outside of the 7/11 at three in the morning

guys shin tsukimi is such a well written character u guys don't understand he got the 0% and changed his personality to be like sou hiyori (midori) just to end up finding out he was behind this. he was portraying himself as a villain when in actuality the villain was awaiting on the next floor. also in the first main game he wanted to get voted out so kanna could live, and (haven't played through the full shin route bare with me) its understandable if his actions are slightly questionable after because he just watched her die and saw the worst person in his life. like what would you do. YK WHO ELSE IS SUPER WELL WRITTEN. KAI. Kai deserved to live longer I'm telling you imagine his reaction to seeing gashu and rio ranger. UGHHHH. but yk the scene where Sara's like "when I was walking home that night, It's almost like the stalker was trying to.. talk to me?" yap yap then it shows a picture of Kai saying don't go home. he was obviously involved but not in a bad way, he just had to protect Sara. Sara would've gone to school the next day if she listened. ugh ugh ughh god that scene made me pause. YK WHAT ELSE?? OR WHO BUT YK. KEIJI. THIS IS KINDA HEARTBRAKING BUT YK THAT FEELING WHEN UR TRUING TO HELP A FRIEND OR WHOEVWR WITH WHAT THEYRE GOING THROUGH THATS SAD AND YOIVE BEEN THROIGH IT TOO AND SAD YOU COULDNT PROTEVT THEM?? dare I say keiji and Sara (father daughter dynamic fight me) based on the storyline keiji had his hallucinations when he shot his idol right? how much would it hurt him to see a literal 17yo highschool girl go through that. like he had to watch her get the same type of hallucinations and it's so sad to me, when I saw a scene that kinda mentioned that alot I literally was so UGSHHSHSHS cries sobs

31/01 Ieyasu

Since it's his birthday, I decided to collect everything I like about this character. Ieyasu is very grumpy. I find it quite charming… And he's not grumpy because of his bad mood… It's just the way how he shows care about other people. They don't take too much care of themselves, they're not too worried about problems they can easily face at any moment, they're literally too vulnerable, and so on… He is a very worrisome person. I found that this side of his personality is best shown on the Yoshimoto's route. Ieyasu had known him since childhood (NO spoilers!). And he don't have to feel so, but he was worried about him…

And there is nothing wrong with his constant contradictions. The more he denies, the more obvious it is that it's a lie.

And then he finally comes out of his calm and collected state, he has so many nice facial expressions. I like his surprised expression, you can finally see how beautiful his eyes are. And it's always nice to see him smile…

He can be quite scary when protecting a loved one… I would be horrified to hear these words from a smiling man… Reminds me of the particular black cat…

And… I just love it. Keiji, don't you dare spoil his fun!

And don't forget how smart he is… and a surprisingly good teacher…

I think Cybird gave Kanetsugu more facial expressions than most of their other sprites. 🤔

I was gushing about him to a friend on What's App in a voice message, and realized it was over 30 minutes long when I finally sent it off. And I WASN'T EVEN WINDED YET. I could have prattled on much longer about Kanetsugu and his route. 😅

It has been a very very long time since I've been THIS excited for a new route from Cybird (and have not been disappointed once it was out).

Time for another important Guardians from my AU - Your Turn To Die: Purgatory Trials!

You can read about a sketch of a story and see previous characters I drew here (part 1) and here (part 3)

There isn't a lot, as it is a fres idea and I'm still thinking about that. If you have any ideas or requast who I should draw next don't be afraid to write!

And below you can read about the characters above! (There may be spoilers... more spoilers than there are already on this drawing xD)

Joe Tazuna - I know he dies really early in the game, but this is my AU and he "lives" there xD As the Guardian, he is one of the most liked, right after Gin. He is kind and wants to make friends with everybody. He wants to help everyone, but sometimes is too clueless and don't know things. Then he usually goes for Sara, because she is so knowledgeable and his best friend. In the looks, he may be a little scary because of his wounds and horns. His wonds represent his death and horns his time as hallucinations (I know they weren't real, but either way he tormented Sara and it was included in his design as the Guardian). His wound matches with Shin's. It is not only because Shin was shot (probably), but because it is a real high probability that it is because of him that Joe died. Be it intended or not.

Kanna Kizuchi - She, as Shin, is a variable of a path we can get. Personally, I am all for logic route as it was my first, but I like both Shin and Kanna and wanted to have both of them here. Kanna, unlike other Guardians, can't move. Or more like she can't go really far away from the place she is "assigned" to, as her body is restricted by vines. The flowers make her unable to speak and usually, she can only ensure company when no other Guardian is near. It is a mystery for all the participating why her body is tied and why can't she just free herself or why won't anyone of Guardians cut the vines. When one of the people wants to free her, there always awaits a punishment for them. And it seems it hurts her?

Shin is often seen with her and others seek him in this moment as he is more content and helpful. But there is something weird about them.

Keiji Shinogi - He is known as the Guardian that looks over participants and is a guard for any unjust behaviors. Or "should" would be a better word as he often turns around or pretends to sleep when he sees some break the rules. He won't really help them, he won't tell them what to do to win or escape, but he won't punish them if he don't have to. He is one of the most scary of Guardians. Role is saying a lot, it is causing others to shiver with fear, when they hear about it. They are in a place when they fight for their lives and there is someone to always be there. His looks don't help either, as he is the one of the most spooky looking Guardians. Chains of justice and hand prints of things unseen by others.

So Hideyoshi's sequel gets pretty gruesome and dire in some places. Warnings and spoilers under the cut

So as of the tragic ending (which is the only one I've finished so far), the two biggest warnings are gore/gruesomeness (offscreen but it's dark to imagine) and a suicide attempt.

For the gruesomeness: The symptoms of the changing timeline are that anyone the MC touches feels pain. The closer she is to someone, the more pain they feel: Hideyoshi gets the worst of it, with the MC's touch eventually beginning to physically burn him, while Keiji initially feels only a slight irritation since they're just acquaintances.

Kicho also has the same things happening to him, and he did a few experiments to get to the bottom of it. He picked a random underling and pretended to take an interest in that man, cultivating a deep bond of respect and affection between the two of them. As with the MC, the deeper the relationship, the more that Kicho's touch began to hurt and then eventually burn the man. It developed to the point where just making eye contact was enough to make the man go blind. So that was when Kicho called off the experiment and left the room, but this was already the point of no return. Just hearing Kicho's voice from another room was enough to kill the man. According to the people who saw the corpse, the man died in agony as his skin literally began to melt.

The suicide attempt is in chapter 6, so it's common to all routes and not just the tragic end. The MC attempts to drown herself in the ocean because she doesn't want to bear the possibility of killing Hideyoshi or anyone else she cares about, as the symptoms appear to progressively worsen over time.

I HATE MY ROOMMATE - SHIN TSUKIMI, PROBABLY ✨

Shin held onto his scarf as he walked out of his room, yawning into it as he did. The apartment had a few new… additions since his ‘roommate’ moved in, a new basket for his clothes, so they don't get mixed up, a separate thing for his clothes as well… which isn’t many, but it still has its place. Unluckily for him, the mentioned ‘roommate’ seems to be awake and ready for the day... somehow. The slightly-less-blond haired man was standing at the kitchen counter, pouring himself a cup of the very cheap coffee Shin tended to get.

KIMI GA SHINE - THE MASTER ANALYSIS - Chapter 1-1: Prologue (SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE GAME)

So, after some deliberation, I’ve decided to do a daily blog thing where I play through the entirety of YTTD, go through every route and scene and also watch through the minisodes before then doing an analysis of everything within it…

What better place to start than the beginning, eh?

We begin the game off with an ominous silhouette asking us one simple question. “Do you know what a majority vote is?”. At the beginning of the game when there is barely any context, this scene serves as a helpful way to introduce the core concept of majority votes to us. Our friend, Shadow the Beaniehog over here gives us a simple demo of a majority vote with two options that are, ironically, positions regarding majority votes. There is not much to say about the dichotomy between Mr. Blue and Ms. Red in this scene other that they represent compliance and defiance to majority votes. Whoever we choose, the other one dies which foreshadows the concept of the Main Game very early on. A majority vote to choose who is killed. Compliance and defiance to majority votes are things we will discuss in other scenes, because they are themes that become important.

Beyond the apparent stuff we can glean from this scene, we can also analyse it from our present point of view in hindsight. This scene at the very beginning is meant to make you distrust the character we come to know as “Sou Hiyori” (the name taken on by the body of Shin Tsukimi) it makes you suspicious and wary of him from the get go and makes you primed for his betrayal and “nice persona” to fall. When in reality, this scene is being conveyed to Shin himself. Beyond this scene being just an introduction, we are literally seeing how the fear of death was being injected into Shin like poison, forcing him to take the “Sou Hiyori” persona and becoming the catalyst for 2/3 of the game’s conflict. This is also, technically, the first time we get to see Midori (or atleast a warped yet accurate perception of him, I’ll elaborate more when we actually get to Shin reflecting on this in 2-2). The shadow teasing and mocking the player is also such a good use of subverting expectations. It makes us think that Shin/Sou is going to be a prick (which he is, don’t get me wrong) but also, the reality is that Shin is the one that the shadow is mocking in a malicious tone, cornering him into a situation he can’t get out of.

It’s interesting how the first scene of the game we see ends up being about Shin when he’s not even protagonist. I’d say that our actual protagonist, Sara and Shin are both equally important and crucial to the story. But speaking of Sara…

Our next scene (or less of a scene, more of a 10 second moment) features the main girl, Sara Chidouin! This scene is another one meant to sow suspicion and distrust within us (even though it’s not aimed at anyone in particular) as two long arms reach out seemingly about to grab Sara. You can make various assumptions from this, that these arms belong to the kidnappers and this is the scene where Sara is being kidnapped to the Death Game, but it’s be wrong. With the benefit of hindsight, we know that this is Keiji reuniting with Sara during the Banquet after Ranmaru locked him in the lockers. It’s a small sliver of content that hints at the dynamic between Sara and Keiji, one of the most important dynamics in the game coming just before Sara and Joe’s dynamic and Sara and Shin/Sou’s dynamic. Again, a scene that comes off as frightening ends up being a moment of reunion and confidence.

These two scenes do help illustrate one of (what I see as) the themes of the game. Of trusting those who are in the same situation as you, as trying to connect with your fellow human beings. These scenes try to sow distrust but end up being subvertations from the truth (Shin’s real persona being masked by a defence of malice, Keiji being a supportive person to Sara despite what he does at the beginning of the game)

I Will Take You Tonight (Part 2)

The warlords returned to the dressing room.

Yukimura: “There’s no time to waste. We need to hurry and go help her.”

Shingen: “Acting without a plan is not a wise choice. This is not the time to act willy-nilly.”

Nobunaga: “You guys, write this first.”

Nobunaga showed everyone the notice the staff had just given him.

Kennyo: “What’s the point of writing it if we don’t know who the enemy is?”

Kicho: “Don’t tell me you’ll use the TV station?”

Everyone: “!”

Nobunaga: “That’s right. I already talked with the staff earlier.”

Nobunaga: “We’ll use the tv to declare war on those who have kidnapped Mai and save her as a phantom thief while watching for their move.”

Mitsuhide: “The tv station is willing to cooperate as long as they can capture exciting footage of the renowned phantom thieves.”

Sasuke: “If that’s the case, let’s write a warning letter first.”

And so each person let their pen run across the paper as they wrote their warnings.

Yoshimoto: “I think that’s enough for all of us.”

Sasuke: “Seventeen warning letters are overwhelming. I think some of them even contain threats.”

Ranmaru: “Some of them are a little scary because they’re worried about Lady Mai.”

Kenshin: “Staff, take this.”

The staff member who received the letters from Kenshin proceeded to respond. Shortly after, they received a response from the culprit.

Staff: “I received an email.”

Mitsunari: “I will keep this woman as my treasure. He’s provoking us.”

Kenshin: “I’m gonna kill him right now.”

Kicho: “You have every right to be angry, but you need to calm down. We have a lot of work to do.”

Kicho: “Sasuke, you’re a ninja, right?”

Sasuke: “Yeah. I know how to do a reverse tracing.”

Sasuke: “Excuse me, staff.”

Sasuke started doing something with the laptop.

Yukimura: “Wow. I have no idea what you’re doing.”

Sasuke: “Thanks. Oh, it’s done.”

He adjusted the laptop so everyone could see the map on the screen.

Sasuke: "I traced the email successfully. I've identified the source and where it was sent."

Keiji: "Let's go there right away."

Mitsuhide: "No, wait. The culprits have sent us a provoking message. They may be a well-prepared group."

Nobunaga: "Yeah. We'll split up into teams from here."

Nobunaga: "Sapphire will secure a route to sneak into the building, Ruby will eliminate the guards, while diamond will secure Mai."

Ieyasu: “What if Sapphire and Ruby find Mai first?”

Kicho: “After infiltrating it, it’d be best for each individual to make their own judgment and proceed with the rescue.”

Kicho: “How about we call your plan “A” and “B” for Diamond’s plan?”

Mitsunari: “That sounds good.”

Nobunaga: “Ours is plan A. Our priority is to protect her.”

The building that Sasuke identified turned out to be an exclusive luxury hotel.

Hideyoshi: “So far, so good.”

Ieyasu: “This lounge was open to non-members as well.”

Mitsunari: “Lord Hideyoshi, Lord Ieyasu.”

Shingen: “We’ve got some information.”

Mitsunari and Shingen, who were out gathering information, returned.

Hideyoshi: “You’re fast.”

Mitsunari: “I got the room number used by the person who runs this hotel.”

Nobunaga: “Our mission here is also complete.”

Nobunaga joined the four of them, and at that moment, he received a message.

Nobunaga: “It’s from Yoshimoto. He went in from the back, disguised as a contractor.”

Nobunaga: “He said he successfully infiltrated. We’re going to join him.”

Ieyasu: “Did you get what we were looking for?”

Nobunaga: “I told you the mission is complete.”

He smiled and tossed the membership cards for six people onto the desk.

Hideyoshi: “As expected of Lord Nobunaga! With this, we can infiltrate even beyond the lobby.”

Nobunaga: “Yeah, from the lobby and beyond.”

Nobunaga: “I sent Yoshimoto there because I believe there’s a route that can’t be accessed from the guest side.”

Shingen: “I don’t see this going down easily.”

The five used their membership cards to sneak inside the hotel.

Afterward, they received a message from Yoshimoto and met in a deserted hallway.

Yoshimoto: “As I thought, there’s a floor that is inaccessible to both guests and employees.”

Shingen: “I heard that the hotel manager’s private floor is on the top floor, the 33rd floor.”

Shingen: “Where is the floor that we can’t enter?”

Yoshimoto: “This building is actually 34 stories high.”

Mitsunari: “Then the owner’s actual residence is on the 34th floor.”

Yoshimoto: “Probably. But the elevator only goes up to the 33rd floor.”

Ieyasu: “Is there a staircase?

Yoshimoto: “It looks like someone tampered with the elevator.”

Yoshimoto: “You can only get to the 34th floor by inserting a key that only some of the staff have.”

Yoshimoto: “But there are surveillance cameras.”

Yoshimoto: “We need to do something about it, or the alarm will go off immediately.”

Yoshimoto: “Even if we reach the 34th floor, there’ll be a commotion right away.”

Mitsunari: “If we have that much information, then we can split up and solve the problem.”

Shingen: “Yoshimoto and I will get the key.”

Nobunaga: “We’ll handle the surveillance cameras.”

Nodding to each other, Nobunaga and the others split into two groups.

A few minutes later一

Nobunaga: “Looks like you got the key.”

Shingen: “Of course. Looks like you took care of the surveillance cameras.”

Mitsunari: “We tampered with them to make the recorded footage loop.”

Ieyasu: “We can now infiltrate the top floor.”

Hideyoshi: “Let’s hurry and get there.”

And so the five of them boarded the elevator.

Meanwhile, the warlords of Team Ruby were waiting on the roof.

Masamune checked his phone as he received a message.

Masamune: “Sapphire has secured the route to infiltrate the floor owned by the kidnapper.”

Keiji: “As expected of Lord Nobunaga.”

Kanetsugu: “And where is it?”

Masamune: “The top floor, but apparently, there are a lot of security guards there.”

Yukimura: “I see. So we just need to take care of them.”

Masamune: “Exactly.”

Then Ranmaru and Sasuke returned. Both were looking for other ways to infiltrate the hotel.

Ranmaru: “I found a way through the vent, but it was pretty narrow. I think I’m the only one who could fit in there.”

Sasuke: “The route from it is connected to the top floor.”

Keiji: “Why don’t we see if we can enter through the window?”

Kanetsugu: “We’ll attract attention if we go in a large group. Yukimura and I will use the wire gun and check it.”

Masamune: “I’m counting on you.”

Kanetsugu and Yukimura deftly used the wire guns, suspending themselves from the rooftop and maneuvering along the windows.

Sasuke: “Yukimura, Kanetsugu. Are you guys all right?”

Sasuke and the others watched them from the rooftop and called out to them.

Kanetsugu: “It’s windy, but no problem.”

Yukimura: “There’s a room with no lights on. Let’s try entering from there.”

The two nodded at each other and placed their feet on the window’s ledge.

Then, Yukimura lightly tapped on the glass and shook his head.

Sasuke: “It’s probably coated with a special coating.”

Ranmaru: “I’ll try to break in through the vent.”

Keiji: “We’ll just have to find a window somewhere to break in.”

As they investigated, Yukimura and the others finally found a window that could be broken.

Kanetsugu: “If we break it, people will immediately rush to it. Sasuke, the thing.”
