🐕 - This dog is 'disc'-overing hidden treasures! Get ready for the 'paws'-itively successful fundraiser, Daisy's Discs!

1. Most unionized US rail workers now have new sick leave

More than 60% of U.S. unionized railroad workers at major railroads are now covered by new sick leave agreements, a trade group said Monday.

Last year railroads came under fire for not agreeing to paid sick leave during labor negotiations.

2. Missing teen found after being lost in the wilderness for 50 hours

Esther Wang, 16, had been hiking with three other people through the Maple Ridge park on Tuesday.

The group made it to Steve’s lookout around 2:45 p.m. that day.However, when they headed back down to the campsite, after about 15 minutes of hiking, the group leader realized Wang was missing. They returned to the lookout to look for Wang but couldn’t find her. The leader headed to the trail entrance to notify a park ranger and police.

“Esther Wang has been located. She’s healthy, she is happy and she’s with family.”

3. A dog has retrieved 155 discs from woods. They’ll be on sale soon, with proceeds going to the park in West Virginia where they were found

Meet Daisy, the yellow Labrador retriever with a unique talent for finding lost Frisbee golf discs at Grand Vue Park in West Virginia. Four years ago, while on a walk with her owner Kelly Mason, Daisy discovered a disc in the woods and proudly brought it back. Since then, Daisy's obsession with finding stray discs has grown, and she has collected an impressive cache of 155 discs.

Mason and park officials have now come up with a plan to return the discs to their owners if they are labeled, and any unclaimed discs will be sold as a fundraiser to support the park's disc golf courses. Daisy's Discs is expected to be a success, with many excited about the possibility of recovering their lost discs thanks to Daisy's remarkable skills.

4. Australian earless dragon last seen in 1969 rediscovered in secret location

A tiny earless dragon feared to be extinct in the wild has been sighted for the first time in more than 50 years – at a location that is being kept secret to help preservation efforts.

The Victorian grassland earless dragon, Tympanocryptis pinguicolla, has now been rediscovered in the state, according to a joint statement issued by the Victorian and federal Labor governments on Sunday.

5. Detroit is going to power 100% of its municipal buildings with solar

The city has determined that it’s going to need around 250 acres of solar panels in order to achieve 100% solar power for its municipal buildings.

6. Canada Officially Bans Cosmetic Testing on Animals

The fight for cruelty-free beauty in Canada has seen a significant breakthrough as the Canadian government legislates a full ban on cosmetic animal testing and trade, marking a victory for Animal rights advocates and eco-conscious consumers.

This landmark decision is part of the Budget Implementation Act (Bill C-47), not only prohibiting cosmetic animal testing but also putting an end to the sale of cosmetics that use new animal testing data for safety substantiation.

7. Belize certified malaria-free by WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has certified Belize as malaria-free, following the country’s over 70 years of continued efforts to stamp out the disease.

“WHO congratulates the people and government of Belize and their network of global and local partners for this achievement”, said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “Belize is another example of how, with the right tools and the right approach, we can dream of a malaria-free future.”

Believe me don’t listen to that nonsense that Kate failed at her first tour. I am Canadian and I remember that tour, it was like rockstars landed everywhere they went. I even waved at the government plane as they flew to the next city- i live near the flight path of a major airport:).

I followed it too, and it was huge. The maple leaf hat! The sailor dress! The nude pumps and espadrille wedges! The cowboy pics!! She put Erdem on the map during that tour. (lol. I've hated Erdem since 2011)

Yes, there was a Marilyn moment and some protests, but that didn't make it a failure. She handled the protests pretty well. It was the tour that launched a thousand (okay, maybe several dozen) CopyKate blogs.

A lot of current royal fans weren't around in 2011 and don't remember how the monarchy was perceived before the Cambridges arrived. Charles' marriage to Camilla was still controversial. Diana's death was still felt. Angela Kelly hadn't perfected the Queen's style yet, and QEII looked a little dated and frumpy.

William and Kate's wedding was an institutional renewal, and the Canada tour reflected that. There isn't much on the internet from that period, but here's a good article describing the transformation. I also found the Kate in Canada documentary on Youtube!

Eddie would one hundred percent try to get them to form a band. My dad tried with my siblings and I and I feel like it would be really similar in that they’d get bored because they don’t have the attention span or patience for music lessons as children so Eddie is always trying to wrangle them in. He throws in the towel eventually but there are traces left behind; Penny playing the violin and cello for the Philharmonic (while also being an environmental activist and she’ll go on to score music for films), Wayne doubles as the geography and music teacher of a middle school (he’s a pianist, definitely enjoys jazz and classical over everything else but he’s got a fondness for heavy metal and rock because of his dad) and Maple goes the full nepo baby route, becomes a pop sensation along the likes of y2k influences such as Britney Spears, P!nk, and heavy on the early Kelly Clarkson vibes. Girl can dance (not better than Penny, who will remind her lol) and BELT. And sometimes, when the whole family manages to get together, they play a little something for their dad and mom.

This is short, and it is sweet. Brighid is a roast machine, Alasdair is tenderhearted for the wee frozen maple, and Arthur never heats his goddamn house. He woke feeling electrocuted. His eyes were open, but he could see nothing. All the world narrowed to his body, merely a twisting, jerking live wire of pain as he folded upright with a cry.

"Hush, wee one." He heard his uncle's voice and collapsed against a familiar shoulder. "Only a nightmare."

"Wee one?" He heard another, slightly less familiar accent and jolted, embarrassed to be discovered not only in bed, even if his phone did display a time of three am, but panting against his uncle's shoulder, still struggling to catch his breath. His aunt swung about the room, and the light caught on the metal zip-up of her leather jacket. "Taller than you, so he is." She laughed.

"Madame Kelly," Matthew blurted, clutching the covers to his chest.

He heard a laugh like harp strings. "Bloody hell, listen to the poor thing. Forgotten English have you? And who sleeps in a sweater like that? Forget where you parked the U-Boat, love?"

Still short of breath, Matthew flushed. He'd been cold all day, and sometimes, the most fatherly thing about Arthur was his dominion over the thermostat. Embarrassed, he tried to curl back under the covers.

"Ach, leave the poor boy alone, Bridgie," Alasdair pat his back, and his aunt laughed at him. He flushed, embarrassed. "You'll send him into fits,"

Brighid gave a snort and patted her brother on the shoulder. "Aye."

"You're cold," Matt muttered, trying to avoid another pointed comment from his aunt. She was hilarious, but he was very tired. There was the smell of outdoors in the room and they both wore their coats.

"Aye, only just traipsed home from the pub. Your aunt's done herself in properly. Pay her no mind, lad."

"Now that's no fair," Brighid laughed. "You're the one so hammered we took a cab. Can ye believe that? Ol' 'thrift will win us the war' here shelled out for a ride home, and I'm not even French."

"Brighid," Alasdair shook his head.

"I'm celebrating, Arth— Alasdair. Bloody baby brothers. And their babies."

Matt didn't know what to say to any of that. He watched, a little stunned, as Brighid disappeared down the hall, lurching from side to side.

"Do you want a hand?" He whispered.

"Pffftt," Alasdair waved him off. "No, I just heard you fussing in your sleep." He ran a hand through Matthew's hair. "Sound like you've run a marathon."

"Just an odd dream."

"Have you been eating enough?" His uncle pushed his bangs back, and Matthew shrugged.

"As much as I ever do."

He got a downright maternal cluck in response. "As bad as your father,"

"I eat!"

"Aye, sure you do. That's why you're waking up in a panic and sleeping in layers again. Been doing that since you were a bairne. Two sweaters to bed and I know there's something wrong with ye." He shook his head and Matt didn't have an answer to that. Because his uncle wasn't wrong.

From the trunk at the end of the bed, his uncle pulled another blanket, piled it on, and squeezed his shoulder, tucking it in. He tapped Matt's chin, gently as ever. "Whatever's got you anxious, it'll be all right. And we'll talk it through in the morning. Nothing's the matter between here and breakfast, lad, I promise."

and I keep listening to a song about autumn  where an apple tastes like longing and every leaf  in the maple tree tries to explain loss through a series of colors—hectic orange, indifferent red, a kind of gold that speaks directly to God or moonbeams and in the dark as I drive down wet roadways watching for deer the only things I can see clearly are the yellow leaves christening my windshield and I think how we are taught not to love too many, too much, the night, the darkness, and I believe I am crying but it is only rain.

A soft rain stole in, unhelped by any breeze, And when I saw the silver glaze on the windows, I started with A, with Ackerman, as it happened, Then Baxter and Calabro, Davis and Eberling, names falling into place As droplets fell through the dark. Names printed on the ceiling of the night. Names slipping around a watery bend. Twenty-six willows on the banks of a stream. In the morning, I walked out barefoot Among thousands of flowers Heavy with dew like the eyes of tears, And each had a name – Fiori inscribed on a yellow petal Then Gonzalez and Han, Ishikawa and Jenkins. Names etched on the head of a pin. One name spanning a bridge, another undergoing a tunnel. A blue name needled into the skin. Names of citizens, workers, mothers and fathers, The bright-eyed daughter, the quick son. Alphabet of names in a green field. Names in the small tracks of birds. Names lifted from a hat Or balanced on the tip of the tongue. Names wheeled into the dim warehouse of memory. So many names, there is barely room on the walls of the heart.
