“This sucks.” (Y/N) mumbled.
Hidden in Victor’s old hideout, the one he so kindly showed her a few days before – ‘In case you wander too much’, he said -, she tried not to make any noises. There was no talisman inside, which meant the monsters outside could get in if they managed to unlock the tailgate.
It has been many, many hours since she got here alone, after going out to empty her head; people were dying, one after the other, more than ever before, and now they couldn’t sleep.
“Keep your eyes open, shitstain.” The woman whispered to herself, rubbing her eyes, back leaning against the metal wall. Her sight was trained on the tailgate, wondering why in the fuck she would wander off near nighttime – never again.
And then, a sliver of light passed by a tiny opening on the metal.
Too bright to be a flashlight.
(Y/N) scrambled up, face dangerously close to the cold metal, and peeked out.
“Sun, my beloved!” She shouted, and turned around. With ever raising excitement, she opened the latch and slid up the tailgate; the warm rays of sunshine hit her face with full force, and she leaped down onto the dewy grass.
The woman ran down the familiar path towards the town; by the diner, she waved at Mrs. Liu, Victor and Ethan, smiling as she saw the familiar faces.
“Morning, Jade!” (Y/N) shouted, slowing down as the curly-haired man left the bar with a frazzled look, some book in his hands.
“Where the hell have you been?!” He shouted back, brows furrowed.
“I was taking a walk, dude.” She replied, staring at him. “Where the fuck are you going, looking like my conspiracy theory uncle?”
“Oh, fuck off.”
“Don’t die!”
Jade grumbled something under his breath and left as (Y/N) headed, now walking at a decent pace, towards the Liu’s house.
The familiar sight of closed windows and an open door greeted the woman as she neared the place. She saw Sara leave the house with Boyd; nodded at them, and did her best to ignore the way her heart ached as her eyes focused on the man right behind the duo.
“Kenny.”
The ex-deputy looked up as (Y/N) whispered his name, brown eyes widening as he took in her messy appearance. Her hair was sticking up in weird angles, dark circles adorned her eyes (nothing new there, to be honest), and her glasses were kinda askew on her face.
A few seconds was all it took for the freckled man to run up to his friend and pull her into a tight hug. His arms circled her shoulders, and she sighed; he was warm. He smelled good. He was soft, comfortable-
She was sleep deprived.
“You’re alive.” Kenny said softly, nose nestled in the juncture of her neck and shoulder.
“Last I checked, yes.”
“I was worried, you dumbass.” He leaned back, staring into her eyes.
The tension between them was palpable as they locked eyes, the weight of their emotions hanging in the air. Kenny's words had hit her hard, stirring a whirlwind of worry within her. He couldn't bear the thought of losing her.
Her hands trembled slightly as she reached up to cup his cheeks, her touch gentle and filled with a mixture of affection and regret. Her thumbs traced tender circles against his skin, feeling the warmth gradually spread beneath her touch, a sign of their shared vulnerability.
With every passing moment, their faces drew closer, their breaths mingling. Their noses almost brushed against each other, creating a delicate connection that mirrored the fragile state of their hearts. It was a moment suspended in time, charged with longing and the unspoken desire for solace.
She mustered the courage to ask, her voice filled with a blend of uncertainty and hope, "I'm sorry... Can I kiss you?"
Kenny's response was barely a whisper, yet it carried the weight of his longing, "Please."
In that instant, their lips met, a gentle collision of souls seeking solace and reassurance. It was a tender, tentative kiss, born out of a shared understanding of their vulnerabilities. Their worries and fears melted away, replaced by a rush of affection and the undeniable connection between them.
Time seemed to stand still as they lost themselves in the softness of the moment. The world around them faded away, leaving only the sensation of their lips moving in sync, a dance of tenderness and forgiveness. It was a kiss that spoke volumes, expressing their unspoken apologies, their longing, and the depth of their feelings for one another.
In that single, stolen moment, they found solace and healing, their hearts intertwining in a profound embrace. And as they pulled away, breathless yet content, they knew that their bond had grown stronger, fortified by the power of their shared vulnerability and the healing a simple kiss could offer.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Boyd’s voice rang out, and the couple finally remembered there was an audience near them. “But we need Kenny right now, (Y/N).”
The woman felt her own face warm up now, and slowly let go of her friend’s face, arms hanging limply by her side.
“I’ll see you soon.” Kenny whispered, a small smile on his handsome face. “Really soon.”
“Be careful, okay?” (Y/N) whispered back, gaining a nod and a grin in response.
“Always.”
Right then and there, as she watched the trio walk off towards the forest, the woman sighed, with a lovestruck smile on her face.
“Be still, my fucking heart.”

This is our chance to learn about them. We could study them, open them up, see what they look like on the inside. We don't even know if it's safe to touch this thing! You're talking about... about operating on it!?

You know, ever since she walked off that bus I actually allowed myself to believe there was a plan to all of this. That there was something we were meant to do here. But there's no... There's no grand design. We're all gonna die here. And all of this would have been for nothing.

Someone like you -> kenny liu
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairings; kenny liu x donna!daughter!reader
warnings; mentions of death, weed, swearing.
summary; you always felt out of place in colony house, maybe moving into town will do you some good, luckily for you the deputy has a spare bedroom.
wordcount; 2.09k words
a/n; definitely making this a series because look at my husband
Tumblr media
You sat down at colony house, looking out at the horizon, the sun had just risen, meaning the Creatures had left. You had this life for a while, you were here before the talismans, it was rough obviously, someone as young as you seeing the bodies everyday.
You sat on the roof, a joint in your hand, curtesy of Fatima obviously, as you watched the people in town. A very known habit you had.
You didn't know why you liked watching people in town, maybe you were just waiting for Victor to wake up.
You and Victor have always been close. You didn't see a creep like many, you didn't see a pervert. You saw a broken man who only needed love and social interactions.
He did grow up in this life, longer than everyone. You were eating an apple as you watched the deputy walk around town, making sure everyone was fine for the day.
You've never spoken to him, you would be lying if you said you weren't intrested in him, his dopy smile, his eyes, his attitude, his personality.
You wanted to know more.
You looked down as your mother called for you, Donna stood at the bottom, clearly irritated. You sighed before putting out the joint and grabbing a pole and sliding down before landing in front of her.
"What the fuck did I tell you about going up there?" Donna scoffed as you sighed, looking away as you crossed your arms.
"It's dangerous up there." You muttered as she nodded. She sighed before placing her hands onto your shoulder. "I know, I know. You don't want anything to happen to me, day or night."
"Okay listen, you can be a dumbass and sulk up there all day, or go to town with me for me, father Khatri and Boyd's monthly get together." Donna offered as you contemplated. You did always want to go to town, meet the people there and see how different they are to the life you have at colony house.
"Uh sure, don't got anything better to do then measure the distance of trees." You said as your mother raised her eyebrow at you, you nodded as she she just sighed and walked off, muttering under her breath as she walked off.
You followed her, looking at the houses and the people, a few walked towards the dinner as the deputy you've seen walk a route everyday left the dinner, a few boxes in his hand.
"Kenny!" Donna smiled as the man looked up, barley carrying the boxes, you grabbed one that fell from him, smiling at him as you took another one. "I believe you haven't met my daughter."
"You have a daughter?" Kenny asked Donna as she nodded. You smiled at him as he nodded and looked between the two of you. "I don't see a resemblance."
You chuckled along with him as you walks towards the post office, sorry, sheriff's office. You stood in front of Sheriff Boyd. You watched as he walked outside, opening the door and smiling at the both of you.
"Donna, you're here, with company?" Boyd glances at you and you crossed your arms and glanced back at him. "Kenny, why don't you show our guest around."
"I know what the town looks like. I was here when we used to pull patches out of the ground." You sneered and he glanced at you. Donna gave you a pointed look which made you roll your eyes as she entered.
"So, you've been here for a while? Why haven't i seen you before?" Kenny asks you as he started walking. You followed him, walking alongside him as you looked around the town you once called home.
"I like to stay at colony house, mostly in my room or with Victor." You answered as you glanced at a scrap mess of a cage in the middle of town. "What's that?"
"That's the box. Whenever someone causes a death they go in there." Kenny explained as you nodded. You walked towards the box, ignoring kenny's heys and questions as to where you were going.
You looked inside, seeing the 'cage' itself. You sighed as you looked around, no talisman, they were leading people to their deaths.
"We've never used it. I'm not supposed to tell you this, but Boyd made it to scare the townsfolk into being careful." He whispered as you sighed in relief. You continued walking with him. It was refreshing, talking to someone who wasn't high or being a complete ass.
Did you chose the wrong choice?
No, you couldn't leave your mother. You wouldn't dream of it. You liked the bond, the connection, the stability.
You walked back to the post office, joking around with Kenny and waiting for your mother who soon exited. "Cmon, we should head back."
You nodded at your mother as she started to walk off, you turned back to kenny who seemed rather disappointed. "I'll see you soon?"
Kenny smiled at the idea to see you again. He licked his lips, nodding before standing up and helping you up from the steps. "I'll see you around."
You smiled before walking off, already missing the town and missing the boys company. "He's a townie, don't forget."
"They're not that bad mom." You muttered as she turned around to face you. "I know we have bad memories, but they're like a puzzle. They connect, isn't that something nice."
"They have a box to murder people." Donna reminded but you sighed. You wanted to tell her what Kenny told you, but you knew she wouldn't believe you, or it would backfire and she'd run if to Boyd, saying how much of a lie like that would break the chain of the community he built.
"Don't tell me you want to be one of them now." Donna sneered as you sighed, you stopped walking, crossing your arms causing her to look at you. "y/n."
"I hate colony house. I have no friends. They're all assholes who want to get drunk and high! Fatima, Elis and Victor are the only tolerable people in there!" You answered. You never wanted to leave your mother, to cause a drift, you'd be lying if you said you wouldn't miss your old life with Victor.
"The moment you leave, there's no coming back. I can't bend the rules, even for you." Donna silently pleaded as you sighed. You knew that. It was why you went with her in the first place, you couldn't handle it anymore.
"They all look at me like I'm crazy." The moment you spilled that from your mouth, how you had lost your mind the first few weeks of living here. "I mean, it's a hazard, why would I stay in a place where one person's mistake could kill us all."
"The windows are nailed shut!" Donna argued as you scoffed.
"Hammers exist!" You scowled. You realised she was starting to get irritated. "Mom, just listen to me."
"Fine you wanna go there. Go." She scoffed. You sighed, shaking your head.
"You don't mean that-." Before you could finish your sentence she walked towards you, pointing her finger at you.
"Go, go run off. You'll come back crying to mommy right after it just like always." You held back the remark you were about to say, you knew she didn't mean it, you knew she was just hurt, hurt by the fact that you considered leaving.
Mothers instinct.
"Go." You sighed before walking towards your room, packing a bag. Donna was already on her way to Boyd. You knew it was against the rules to switch your area, but technically you never chose, your mother just snatched you and they never said anything because you were with your family.
You heard a knock on the door, opening it to find victor, clearly upset. "Is it true?" He whispered as you sighed. "Are you leaving?"
"I'll visit you, I promise." You tried to comfort him, he shook his head, looking at you.
"It's against the rules. Donna won't let you." He said as he clutched his lunchbox. You sighed, turning back to your bag.
"I know, but it won't stop me." You answered. He nodded beforw opening his lunchbox, taking out a drawing of the both of you. "Victor."
"I made it for you, to never forget." He answered as you smiled at the drawing.
"I'll never forget you Victor. C'mere." You held out your arms for him, taking him in for a hug. He always say you as a sister, someone to protect, someone who'd always be by his side.
You watched him walk back to his room, you sighed before closing up your bag, waiting outside at colony house to find Elis and Fatima outside, they walked towards you, clearly confused.
"We heard your leaving." Fatima announced as you nodded. Elis crossed his arms as he leaned against the railing.
"It's gonna be weird without you." Elis sighed as you nodded. You looked at Fatima as she hugged you, Elis joining in as they watched Donna walk up the trail with Boyd. "I believe that's our cue to leave."
"We'll leave the backdoor unlocked in the day." Fatima smiled at you as you chuckled before walking down to meet sheriff Boyd.
You turned to your mom who crossed her arms, clearly still upset. You sighed before hugging her as she hugged back. "I'll bend the rules a little, come visit okay?"
"Always." You whispered as she smiled. You let go as you watched her wipe a tear from her eyes.
"I'm proud of you." She whispered before you turned to the sheriff who escorted you to a house.
"Kenny will give you the rules of the town, you'll be sleeping here until we find you a place to stay." Boyd said as you nodded, you looked at the sun to see it was about to set. "Welcome to the town."
"Thanks Sheriff." You smiled as he smiled back.
"You know my residence, if you need anything, I'm here. Even if you just want lunch with me." Boyd offered as you nodded.
"I'll keep that in mind." You nodded. You looked to the side to find Kenny waiting by the window, you waved as he waved back, you entered the house, finding Kenny talking to his mother in another language.
"Uh, hi." You you muttered as Kenny turned to face you, he spoke to his mother before turning back to you, smiling as he grabbed your bags.
"I'll take you to your room for now, I heard Boyds gonna build you a house or something to live in." Kenny nodded as you nodded along, he turned to his mother, speaking to her softly in another language before walking up the stairs.
"So. Uh, you're the deputy." You looked at him as he nodded, placing you bags into a room.
"Yeah, Boyd took me in after my father uh. Tried to open the door I suppose." You nodded as you sat down on the bed, Kenny took the chair, spinning it around to sit down, his hands onto the back of the chair.
"I've seen you. On the roof of the colony house." He started as you raised your eyebrow at him.
"A stalker aye?" You giggles as he chuckled, shaking his head.
"It's hard to miss a girl dancing around on a roof." He reasoned as you nodded. He leaned in, smiling at you. "That's really cool, and you're not that bad at dancing."
"Thanks Kenny." You smiled, you turned around at the sound of a bell, looking out the window to find Boyd ringing the bell.
"Okay, breakfast is in the morning, I'll knock on your door before then. My mom serves it at the dinner." Kenny started as you nodded looking around your room as he stood up and leaned against the doorframe. "The bell indicated curfew you should be on your way home or at your house by then, and you know about the box."
"Mhm." You nodded as he sighed, he smiled at you, before turning around to go to bed. You stood up, sitting on the windowstill removing the tarp as you look out to the town. It looked peaceful, beside the Creatures walking around.
You loved the town, no matter how fucked up it was, it was refreshing.
Did you make a mistake? You looked at your door, seeing kenny pass through helping his mom get to her room as you smiled.
This is where you belong.

Tumblr media
The screeches were louder tonight.
Kenny was used to it, really - after dark, either cold or warm, there was noise outside, always. The hushed, kind whispers; the taunts, the offers made out loud, and the screeches.
The fucking loud, shrill sound that, weirdly, reminded him of the pterodactyls in Jurassic Park (or that second Scooby-Doo movie).
It didn’t use to weird him out, but he could swear they were getting louder and louder in this specific night, and the thought of being alone in his room made Kenny grow restless to the point he stood up and walked up to the window.
His hand raised to the closed blinds, reaching out impatiently – and then, he stopped.
“Can’t do this.”
Before he could do something stupid, he left his room. Passing by his mom’s and Jade’s doors, he walked towards the stairs and walked down, careful to avoid the steps that creaked loudly with the slightest pressure; then, he hopped onto the ground floor and looked onwards, towards the door near the kitchen.
He knew you would be awake, listening to the screeches too.
Just as he walked up to the door, it creaked open; a sliver of light escaped onto the hallway, and he took that as an invitation.
Kenny walked into the room, and closed the door behind him with a single ‘click!’. Then, the lock twisted into place – he knew what would happen. He needed to fall asleep, you needed to stop thinking, if even for a handful of minutes.
“I thought you might show up.”
The room was in its usual state. Clean, with a few papers scattered around the familiar table by the window; the dresser beside it was void of any dust, and the bed was a little messy – sheets crinkled and tossed around from a person who laid down but didn’t get to sleep.
“Sorry, I know it’s late-” The apology died on Kenny’s lips as his housemate walked up to him, as a small smile broke on your face; he felt his cheeks flush - was this what his old roommate used to do? What was it - a booty call?
"It's okay, love."
A hand cupped Kenny's face, and he leaned into the touch. He ran hot, and suddenly his loose shirt and sweatpants felt too tight, too scratchy - uncomfortable. He closed his eyes, and sighed. "I don't wanna sneak around anymore."
You paused in your tracks. A surprised glint shone in your eyes, pupils large in adoration. The two of you have danced around this situation way too many times, scared of losing each other in this nightmare town, having to pretend you weren't in love - to everyone else, and to yourselves.
You licked your lips, suddenly dry. "Are you sure?"
Kenny nodded his head in affirmation. "Yes. I-"
He stopped; his eyes stared straight at the ones in front of him, and he gulped, Adam's apple bobbing. Then, with newfound confidence, he slid his hands up your waist. "I'm in love with you."
A relieved sigh left your lips, leaning up in a rush to capture Kenny's mouth in a searing kiss. Your hands reached up and around the nape of his neck, pulling at the short strands of his soft, thick hair, and he let out a moan in response. His cheeks flushed even more, a bright reddish tint to mirror the flush on his swollen, kiss-bitten lips.
The couple separated after a beat, breath coming out in ragged pants.
"I love you." You finally said, bright smile on your lips. Kenny swooped back down, kissing you with so much fervor it got you a little surprised.
He walked backwards, until the back of his knees hit the bed and he fell on the mattress, breaking the kiss with a little jostle.
"Sorry." He mumbled, a huffed laugh escaping his lips. He wormed his way up the bed, until his head laid on the couple of pillows you always slept with.
You wrestled off your pants while Kenny got rid of his shirt, throwing it on some unknown corner of the room; then, you crawled atop his body - toned from all the sports he played in college, but still soft from all the good food his mom made -, straddling his hips.
You took your time to explore each other's bodies; it was fast before - rushed, to not let Jade or Tian-Chen get you in any compromising positions, so they wouldn't question any of you, and make you think about what you had going on.
Now, with the feelings bared upon the metaphorical table, exposed, you could take all the time in the world to commit yourselves to memory.
You took off your shirt, flinging it across the room – an unusual move, but this was a new scenario. You could clean it up later.
"You're so pretty." You uttered, hands splayed out on Kenny's freckled chest. He flushed even more, down his neck and torso, red growing underneath the hands that caressed his skin; he shuddered as a nipple was tweaked - he was sensitive there, and since you found that out he hasn't had a peaceful day.
His breath came out in ragged, choppy pants as both his nipples were played with. You squeezed his chest a couple of times, but his groans and moans grew in volume as did the tent in his pants, right under your own clothed core.
"Ahh, jus'- move already," he whimpered, hips bucking up to seek friction; a wet patch had formed on the damned grey sweatpants, matching with the one on your underwear.
"You're so bossy," You grumbled, but rolled your hips anyway - couldn't resist the way Kenny's eyes rolled to the back of his head, a thin layer of sweat already covering his exposed skin. "Come on, lift up your hips."
The man did as told, and put the back of his hand over his mouth to stifle the noises he made as his pants joined the other clothes on the floor, along your underwear.
He jolted.
"Hnng-!"
You grinned as you straddled him again, bare pussy resting on top of his cock. You moved up, breath hitching as the spongy head brushed against your clit; the sheer amount of precum he let out was enough to help with your sloppy movements, hands splayed over his chest as you moved in no particular pattern.
He groaned, member twitching as you stopped on your tracks over him.
"I didn't even put it inside. Come on, pretty boy. Hang on f'me, just a little."
Kenny nodded his head, black hair sticking to his sweaty forehead. He opened his eyes, unfocused - and closed them again upon seeing you – his lover, officially - opening your folds with your pointer and middle fingers, holding his dick with your other hand.
You sank down slowly, savoring the stretch - he wasn't massive, just the right size to rub all the good spots in you. Little by little, you slid down until your pelvic bone found his, wetness seeping onto the small patch of hair on his navel.
"D'you want me to move?"
Kenny shook his head in denial. "Do that and it'll be the quickest I've ever came."
You chuckled, brushing the hair that rested over his forehead; his own hands drifted up - one found your free one, intertwining your fingers, and the other slid up your chest to squeeze at your boob. “’s soft.”
“Hmm.” You hummed in response, head nearing his. A peck was placed on his lips, and your nose brushed his softly, slowly – a sign of adoration. “Are you okay?”
“Better than okay.” He whispered back, hips snapping up in need; you gasped, eyes closing in surprise at the sudden pleasure that jolted up your spine like lightining.
“Ahh, don’t- don’t do that,” You whined, and Kenny chuckled. With newfound vigor, you circled your hips, setting a slow, torturing pace; his hand left your boob, up your shoulder and down your arm, until you laced your fingers with his.
Both hands resting on either side of his head, fingers tangled with each other’s, noses and chests touching – you were thoroughly entangled with Kenny, hearts beating so fast you thought you might combust in place. The coil of pleasure in your belly built and built and built-
Kenny cried out, and you swooped right back down to kiss him silent as his back arched and his cock shot ropes of milky white in your pussy; warm, sticky – each time you grinded down, your clit got stimulated until the coil snapped and white hot took over your vision.
When you came to, Kenny had turned you both on your sides, cleaning up the mess between your legs with his discarded shirt. “Ah, you’re back.”
You blinked. “I passed out?”
“For a couple minutes, yeah. I got worried, but you were breathing okay and mumbling something like ‘dick so good it sent me to space’.”
“You’re shitting.”
He grinned. “Yeah, I am.”
You snorted, hand reaching up to caress his cheek. A loving, chaste kiss was placed on his lips, and he sighed, head hitting the pillows.
“You’re staying, right?” You whispered, turning off the nightlamp just as he hummed in confirmation.
“Yeah. I’ve wanted to do this for ages.” He reached out, wrapping his arms around your waist, and hiding his face on your chest. “Good night. I love you.”
You smiled. “I love you, too. Sleep well.”
You didn’t hear the screeches anymore.

I Can’t Lose You
Kenny Liu x Reader
You head out to do a perimeter check before darkness falls. Night comes too quickly and you find yourself stuck, having to hide to survive. Kenny is worried sick all night, thinking he may have lost you. When morning comes, Kenny realizes life is too short to hide his feelings for you.
The night came faster than you anticipated. What had started as a quick run to check the perimeter of an abandoned house on the edge of town turned into something far more dangerous. The door you had come through was jammed, and the other exits were either boarded up or too risky to try without attracting attention from the creatures that roamed outside.
You were trapped.
Your heart raced as the sounds of the night grew louder, the telltale signs of the monsters creeping ever closer. You had no way to get back to the station. No way to let Kenny know what had happened. And he was expecting you. You had promised him you’d be back before dark, and now…
Now it was too late.
You curled up in the farthest corner of the room, your flashlight flickering as it threatened to go out completely. You weren’t sure what scared you more—the monsters outside or the thought of Kenny thinking the worst. He’d worry. You knew he would. But all you could do now was wait for morning, praying the creatures wouldn’t find you before then.
Kenny paced the station, his anxiety twisting tighter with every passing minute. You should have been back by now. The sun had long since set, and the darkness outside was alive with danger. Every sound made him jump, imagining the worst. What if something had happened to you? What if one of those things had found you? What if you were hurt, trapped, or worse…?
He slammed his hands down on the table, his breath coming in short, sharp gasps. He couldn’t stand it anymore. He had to find you.
Grabbing his rifle, Kenny made for the door, his mind racing with a single thought: Find her. Now.
But as he reached for the handle, Boyd stepped in front of him, blocking his path. “Where do you think you’re going?” Boyd’s voice was stern, but there was an understanding in his eyes.
“I have to find her,” Kenny snapped, his panic rising. “She’s out there, and I can’t just stand here—”
“Kenny, you leave now, and those things will kill you before you even get halfway across town.” Boyd’s voice was steady, but firm. “If she’s alive—and I believe she is—then you need to be here for her in the morning. Going out there now won’t help her.”
Kenny clenched his fists, his body trembling with frustration and fear. “I can’t just do nothing, Boyd. I can’t just sit here and—”
“You need to stay calm,” Boyd interrupted, his voice softening. “If she’s smart—and we both know she is—she’s found somewhere to hide. She’ll make it through the night. But you need to be here when the sun comes up. If you go out there now, and something happens to you, how do you think she’ll feel?”
Kenny’s breath caught in his throat, the truth of Boyd’s words hitting him like a punch to the gut. If something happened to him, if he didn’t make it back… He couldn’t bear the thought of leaving you behind. Not like this. Not without…
He sighed, dropping his head, his heart still pounding in his chest. “I just… I can’t lose her, Boyd. I can’t.”
Boyd placed a firm hand on Kenny’s shoulder. “You won’t. But you need to be patient. Wait for morning.”
Kenny nodded, though every fiber of his being screamed at him to run out the door. But Boyd was right. He had to wait. For you.
The night dragged on, every creak, every distant sound twisting the knot in his stomach tighter. He barely slept, his mind racing with all the terrible possibilities. What if you didn’t make it? What if this was your last night in this cursed town, and he hadn’t even told you…
Told you how much you meant to him.
As the first light of dawn finally broke through the dark, Kenny didn’t hesitate. He grabbed his jacket and bolted out the door, his heart pounding as he raced through the town, calling your name. He didn’t care if anyone heard. He didn’t care if he looked desperate.
“Where are you?” he shouted, his voice raw with panic. “Please, answer me!”
The pale light of morning filtered through the cracks in the boarded-up windows, and you let out a breath you hadn’t realized you’d been holding. You had made it through the night, somehow. You didn’t dare move until you heard the faint sounds of life stirring outside, the nightmare of the night beginning to fade with the daylight.
You pushed your way through the stuck door, your muscles aching from the cramped position you had stayed in all night. Stepping outside, the cool morning air hit your face, and you took a deep breath, grateful to see the sky again. But as relief washed over you, a familiar voice cut through the quiet of the morning.
“There you are!”
You turned just in time to see Kenny sprinting toward you, his face a mixture of panic and relief. Before you could even speak, he was there, his arms wrapping around you in a tight, desperate hug that knocked the air from your lungs.
“Kenny—”
“I thought I lost you,” he murmured into your hair, his voice trembling. “I was terrified. I thought… I thought you were gone.”
You could feel him shaking, his grip on you tightening as if he was afraid you might disappear if he let go. Your heart swelled at the intensity of his emotions, and you hugged him back just as fiercely, your own relief spilling over.
“I’m okay,” you whispered. “I’m here. I’m safe.”
He pulled back just enough to look at you, his eyes searching yours as if he needed to see it to believe it. His thumb brushed across your cheek, and for a moment, the world seemed to fall away, leaving only the two of you standing there in the morning light.
“I can’t do this,” he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. “I can’t keep pretending I’m okay with all this—pretending I don’t care. I care about you. More than I’ve ever cared about anyone.”
Your breath caught in your throat as his words hit you, your heart racing in your chest. “Kenny…”
“I lost my dad,” he continued, his voice urgent, like he needed to get the words out before they escaped him. “And last night, I thought I was going to lose you too. I can’t keep waiting. Life in this place… it’s too fast, too uncertain. I don’t want to wake up one day and realize I never told you how I feel.”
You stared at him, overwhelmed by the depth of his confession. The pain, the fear, the love—it was all there, raw and real. And in that moment, you realized you had been holding back too, afraid of what might happen if you let yourself feel too much in a place like this. But now, standing here with him, there was no more holding back.
“I feel the same way,” you said, your voice barely a whisper. “Kenny, I’ve felt it for a while now. I was just too scared to admit it.”
His eyes softened, relief washing over his face. He let out a shaky breath, and then, without another word, he pulled you into a kiss. It wasn’t hesitant or unsure—it was filled with all the things you both had kept inside for too long.
When you finally pulled away, breathless but smiling, Kenny rested his forehead against yours, his hands still holding you close.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen next,” he said softly. “But I do know that I want to spend whatever time we have… with you.”
You smiled, your heart full. “Then that’s what we’ll do.”
And in that moment, with the sun rising behind you and the horrors of the night fading into memory, you felt hope. Maybe not for the town, maybe not for everything, but for you and Kenny. For whatever came next. Together.
