I did NOT expect the new season of Kimi ni Todoke to have hour-long episodes. I got a bit angry after seeing there's only five of them, but if each of them lasts 60-70 minutes, isn't that like 14 or 15 normal length episodes? 😳😳😳
Whoever convinced me that kimi ni todoke is a happy-go-lucky series should have seen my utter despair when I learned that Ayane and Kento break up in the manga.
once again, i am totally super normal about kento x ayane so have another drabble i just wrote if u want<3
He grabbed her bag, and, in one swift motion, it was hanging off his shoulder.
“Hey, you don't have to carry that for me, you know. It's not like it's heavy.”
“I know, but I want to.”
or: kento muses about his feelings for ayane
Spy x Family CODE: White movie booklet - voice actor drawings and Endo sketches
Continuing from my previous post, here are more photos from the CODE: White movie booklet! However, these contain spoilers about events in the movie, and I will also be mentioning said events. If you don't mind spoilers and want to know what these scenes are, I'd recommend reading my movie summary post to have more context. But if you don't want to be spoiled, I'd recommend holding off on this post until you've seen the movie yourself!
In this section of the booklet, the voice actors drew various scenes from the movie - first up is Kenichirou Matsuda, the voice of Bond. He's pretty good at drawing and I love the expressions he gives the characters! He drew Twilight flying the plane, Anya holding in her poop, Yor ready to fight Type F, and poor Bond after he got hit with the can when Anya was kidnapped.
Next is Ayane Sakura, the voice of Fiona. Her drawing is very good as well. The text says 七変化します (shichihenka shimasu). It's apparently referencing a kabuki dance in which the dancer changes their appearance seven times. Guess it has to do with how often she has to change disguises.
Next is Tomoya Nakamura, the voice of Domitri. Honestly, most of these voice actors draw really good! I think the text says that he'll give Anya a star (stella).
Next is Kento Kaku, the voice of Luca. He drew the scene of Luca and Domitri chasing after Anya (their dialogue says "Wait!!!") His drawings are a bit...rough 😅 I don't know why they remind me of Sanrio characters, lol.
Next is Atsumi Tanezaki, the voice of Anya. I think hers is my favorite, it's such a perfect rendition of the part where Anya is pretending that she's doing a dance she learned in school when in reality she's trying desperately to hold her bowels 😂
Next is Sayori Hayami, the voice of Yor. She drew the scene of Yor defeating Type F with the lipstick. She has a...style, I'll say that 😅 I love how Type F's face is like 😐"I'm doomed."
And last but not least, is Takuya Eguchi, the voice of Loid. He drew the Forgers eating at the restaurant in Frejis. He definitely has a very recognizable style, lol. Endo and the others often poke fun at his terrible drawings, but he keeps making them 😂 (I got to see his "art skills" on full display at this past Anime Expo)
The following section of the book contains sketches by Endo of the new characters, mostly the villains.
And the below page features the god of poop as well as various Anya expressions. The ones in the lower left of Anya's "holding in her poop" faces are amazing...how does Endo come up with these? 🤣
Speaking of the poop god, I was wondering if there was an inner cover for the movie booklet and there was - the god of poop and duck potties!
While I am for hunting down any mangaka that still (or has ever) promoted student x teacher and age gap ships in general I think the Karuho Shiina approach is objectively way funnier.
Basically Karuho had Ayane and Pin be the leftover main characters among the already established 2 couples. While I cannot say she didn't write some jokes into the manga related to the nature of their relationship, it wasn't until the last few arcs that there was any (strictly one sided from the student's side) romance happening.
You'd have to know that at this point people were so invested in them. The biggest KNT fans posting constant updates, translations and paid content were big Ayane x Pin fans. But in general the fandom was so interested in their development and they were satisfied with even with the tiniest of crumbs. Sawako and Shouta had been dating for a year and Chizuru and Ryu had just resolved their issues and gotten together after so long. Ayane had also just broken up with Kento so naturally the next course of action would be finally setting sail to the 'implied from the start' Pin x Ayane ship.
You know the joke that goes 'x has the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever'?
Well Karuho Shiina had the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever. And she did exactly that.
After years of build up and theorizing from the fandom the teacher x student ended the way any ship of that nature should end: the older teacher rejected the younger student and made it clear that it's impossible for him to view her as anything other than a student, a kid he essentially spent 3 years watching grow into an adult. No 'if i wasn't your teacher' or 'maybe in the future'. Even before that, 27 year old Pin made it clear that he's strictly dating women his age and even a 20 year old is considered too young for him.
I will say I still have my doubts about whether that was Karuho's plan from the start or if it's a decision she came to as she saw the way the series progressed. But considering her old works mostly condemned or damned age gap relationships, it's not impossible that this was her initial plan when she started the series in 2006 (a stance impossible to find in any other manga at the time) and not some grand revelation that came to her while writing in the 2010s.
And to reference my favorite tweet ever @ all age gap mangakas:
Okay I know I said I wanted to finish Haikyu before watching Kimi Ni Todoke Season 3 but listen, time got away from me, okay, and I wasn’t gonna wait any longer than I absolutely had to once those episodes dropped.
That said:

I FREAKING LOVE KIMI NI TODOKE SO MUCH.
AAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!
(Spoilers below)
THE WAY KAZEHAYA AND SAWAKO ARE SO SWEET!?!? And also the way I was left frustrated with them at times XD BUT MOSTLY THE FACT THAT THEY HAD ME ALL SMILEY AND GIDDY AND…. AAAH
They did frustrate me a bit this time, but it’s because I’ve read the manga and I know everything will work out and they’ll be fine and JUST STOP BEING DUMB-DUMBS AND KISS ALREADY. But seriously, the extent of my frustration was largely “Kazehaya. Dude. Just talk to your girlfriend instead of making assumptions.”
ALSO RYU AND CHIZU!? HECK YES!!! WE’RE FINALLY GETTING SOMEWHERE!!!! Ugh, I love their dynamic. Listen, Sawako and Kazehaya are adorable and I love them and their relationship SO. MUCH. But Ryu and Chizu is where it’s at. There’s just something extra special about them, and I think it’s probably the fact that Ryu has loved her all along and has been so incredibly patient and not said anything and not pressured her and just quietly supported her and was there for her when she needed him. AGH. WHERE CAN I GET A RYU???
Listen. My first watch I absolutely adored Ryu and he’s probably my favorite character. I read the manga and I loved him even more. This whole time I subconsciously knew I kinda had a crush on him but I was pretending I didn’t and… yeah Season 3 left me completely unable to deny it.
ALSO, I love Chizu. She’s such a softie and so sweet and protective and so so dense, c’mon you idiot HOW DO YOU NOT REALIZE YOUR OWN FEELINGS FOR RYU??? And I love how hard she loves Ayane and Sawako and Ryu (even just as friends). She’s got such a big heart and I’d love to be her friend!
I’m seriously hoping we get a season 4 because I *need* to see them get together in the anime. It would be so satisfying!
Unpopular opinion time: I love Ayane x Kento. I think they’re super cute, and I think they’re good for each other. They’re going to help each other grow, and AYANE LITERALLY ADMITTED THAT BEING AROUND KENTO RELAXES HER. I THINK I HEAR WEDDING BELLS.
Manga readers *stares at you*
I binged all five episodes in one day and I regret nothing. I’m so glad we got season 3 and I’m amazed at how it didn’t feel like it came out 13 years after the original! This was amazing. 10/10, will watch again and would highly recommend.
For those of you who have been seeing my Haikyu rambles, you might be surprised to learn that this, in fact, is my favorite anime of all time and not Haikyu (although it’s a close second!). I’m a shojo girlie at heart :)
Final Fun Fact: Kimi Ni Todoke was both my first anime and my first manga, two years apart!
From Me to You: Kimi ni Todoke (Season 3, Japan, 2024)
Director: Kenichi Matsuzawa
Writer: Tomoko Konparu (based on the manga by Karuho Shiina)
Mini-review:
I've been fervently waiting for this to come out, ever since the surprise announcement we got last year. And, man, it absolutely delivered. I must admit it took a moment to get used to the hour long episodes (and I still think this type of anime works better in 20-minute doses), but the story is just too good for that to matter. At this point I've read the whole manga like 3 o 4 times, but I feel like I'll never get tired of it. I don't know, there's something so special about watching the nicest people in the world fall in love with each other. And on top of that, this specific part of the story is one of my favorites. For starters, I always have fun (for the lack of a better word) with Shota and Sawako's angsty miscommunication. But the best thing about this season is it finally starts to delve deeper into Ayane, Chizu, Ryu and Kento. Really, this is probably the richest ensemble I've ever seen in a shojo. Oh, and the whole thing looks as good and pretty as ever, with a beautful score and OP to boot. Anyway, you can probably tell from my all rambling, but I love Kimi ni Todoke and I truly hope Netflix sees the adaptation through to the end.
