My Keto Journey
In December of 2018, I decided that it was time for a change.  I was at an all time high weight and it scared me a little.  I don’t want my children to grow up without a mother, because I was eating my feelings through carbs and unhealthy food.  I wondered what in the world I was doing to myself and being a terrible health role model for my children. Time to make a huge lifestyle change.
On New Years Day, I did what I call “the great clean-out!”  I threw away everything that was going to be a temptation, which is also the food that the rest of my family loves, to ensure success. On January 2nd 2019, I started with the Ketogenic diet.  I was ready for the worst.  I knew that I was a carbohydrate addicted human and that the withdrawal from carbs was going to be rough.  Day 1 and 2 went well, and then it hit me on day 3 with extreme irritability.  It stuck around for 2 or 3 days and I was deep into ketosis by then.  By the end of week one, I had lost 6.8 lbs (which is mostly water weight) and that was seriously encouraging. 
I was still struggling with not having a sandwich for lunch or a bagel at breakfast.  I had to retrain my brain to have cucumbers instead of bread, bacon and eggs with cheese for breakfast without the bread, and having a taco bowl instead of the tacos.  I took me a few weeks to change my mindset and stop saying that “I can’t have that” to “I choose not to eat that.”  Now, at the time I started, we were still stationed in Guam and there was not a lot of temptation without decent  restaurants to eat out.  Having a support system to cheer you on and celebrate your successes with you is essential!  I have an amazing husband that jumped on board doing a lower carbohydrate version.  He an my son both lost 15 pounds pretty quickly without sweet tea and all the carbs available at home. 
I was in the groove of keto after the first few weeks!  Results were happening fast and by the end of the second month, I had lost 20lbs. My friends and family were aware of my lifestyle change and were so kind to have things that I could eat.
With the stress of a quick move back to the states in April, I maintained my weight loss of 51.2 lbs and have continued to lose weight and keep it off.  Since returning to the states, there are many places that we eat out and I try my best to have keto-friendly foods.  At home, I adhere to the eating of keto meals.  I have started experimenting with different baked goods and am happy to be able to have access to those ingredients being back on the mainland United States.
As of today June 16th, I have lost a total of 62.6 lbs and have about 50 more pounds to go.  Keto has changed my life, my family’s life, and I strive to be a positive influence to others and offer support to make healthy lifestyle changes to those that want to change their life.  I wanted to start this blog to share my experience with others and educate those who have possibly be eating the wrong way that we were taught by the standard food pyramid.
