NFL strength coach comes out
Jacksonville Jaguars strength coach Kevin Maxen comes out in the NFL, a first in major US men’s pro sports (outsports.com) By Cyd Zeigler Updated Jul 21, 2023, 11:43am PDT
Kevin Maxen, an associate strength coach with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, is coming out publicly in hopes of living his life openly without fear, and to inspire others to do so as well.“I don’t want to feel like I have to think about it anymore,” Maxen told Outsports in an exclusive interview. “I don’t want to feel like I have to lie about who I am seeing, or why I am living with someone else.
“I want to be vocal in support of people living how they want to live, but I also want to just live and not feel fear about how people will react.”
[...] Before Maxen, a couple of female assistant coaches in the NFL have been publicly out, most notably former San Francisco 49ers assistant coach Katie Sowers. Curt Miller is an out male coach in the WNBA. Yet Maxen is, as far as Outsports is aware, the first publicly out male coach in a major American men’s pro sports league....
[...] Maxen isn’t new to being different from the crowd. The combination of his race, religion and sexual orientation make him well-versed in tackling issues of diversity and understanding. “As a Black Jew who has dated both men and women, who has been a strength coach at the highest level of professional football, I’ve learned that how I look, what I believe in, and especially who I am physically or emotionally attracted to should not impact the way I or other people view my worth.
“And It should certainly not dictate what I feel I am capable of accomplishing.”

Boguskis make $500,000 gift to support professional experiences at BU
Michael ’85 and Beth Boguski have committed $500,000 to the Bloomsburg University Foundation to support experiential learning opportunities for students. In recognition of this gift, prior commitments, and continued support of the student experience, Bloomsburg University named the dean’s suite in the Zeigler College of Business in their honor.
Since 2014 the Boguskis have championed professional development for students at Bloomsburg University, starting with a gift of $1 million to support BU’s commitment to Professional U. Their latest gift will assist students applying for Professional Experience Grants (PEGs); Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs; and students competing in the Husky Dog Pound.
“We believe it is important to help fund the education of Bloomsburg University students, especially experiential learning,” Michael Boguski said. “Providing our students with access to internships and professional experiences is a competitive advantage for them and is a mission we are pleased to support.”
“Mike and Beth Boguski embody the unique spirit and determination of our students,” said BU President Bashar W. Hanna. “They share our passion for and commitment to our mission of providing experiential learning opportunities for our students so that they can achieve success during and after their years at BU. I am ever grateful to Mike and Beth for their continued generosity and support of Bloomsburg University.”
A former member of the campaign cabinet for BU’s largest-ever capital campaign and a current member of the BU Foundation board, Michael Boguski maintains a strong connection to BU. He was a first-generation college student who began his career in risk management and insurance in 1986 after graduating from Bloomsburg University with a BS degree in Business Management.
Boguski spent the last 22 years at Eastern Alliance Insurance Group, a member of the ProAssurance family of Companies. In May of 2019, he assumed the role of President, Specialty P&C at ProAssurance in Birmingham, Ala. Eastern Alliance Insurance Group, under the leadership of President Kevin Shook, continues to partner with Bloomsburg University on numerous student initiatives, including the Earned Income Tax Credit program.
As one of eight in his family to graduate from the university, including his son Michael in 2018, The Boguskis place a high value on the experiences and the education they received at BU.
“BU is a special place with special people and was an all-around great college experience for me,” Boguski added. “We are extremely pleased to support the student experience into the future. Our family is proud to have our legacy associated with these positive and impactful opportunities for BU students.”

The United States Is Definitely Not On The Brink Of The Next Cold War https://ift.tt/2JJE7BY
Xi Jinping, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin © Reuters / Pool and Kevin Lamarque
Michael O’Hanlon and Sean Zeigler, USA Today: No, we aren't on the brink of a new Cold War with Russia and China It might be a popular phrase to drum up clicks and interest, but the United States is definitely not on the brink of the next Cold War Increasingly in U.S. national security circles, it has become common to hear talk of a new Cold War with great-power rivals. But this way of thinking is imprecise at best, dangerous at worst. A distinguished group of American experts has just warned against such thinking in regard to China, lest it create a self-fulfilling prophecy. However unbecoming Vladimir Putin's rule may be in Moscow, we need a similar corrective for how we think about Russia. Read more .... WNU Editor: I concur with the above analysis. I lived through the real Cold War, and today's tensions are not even remotely close to what the world was like 30 to 65 years ago. from War News Updates https://ift.tt/2YTecy2 via IFTTT

A BMW R100RT Heirloom Custom by Other Life Cycles
This BMW R100RT is a family heirloom of sorts, it belongs to Sam, a Texan with a lifelong relationship with this BMW and a deep love for daily-rideable custom motorcycles.
Ever since he was a child, Sam has had this BMW in his life – it previously belonged to his father who would sometimes take a young Sam for rides on the pillion seat. The bike passed into Sam’s ownership a few years ago and ever since he’s dreamed of having it refreshing it and making it into something he’ll ride every day.
The BMW R100RT
The BMW R100RT is an important motorcycle in the long history of the German marque, it was the touring version of the BMW R100RS, the latter is remembered today for being the first motorcycle to come with a full fairing from the factory.
Much like its R100RS sibling, the R100RT featured a full fairing with an adjustable windshield, optional twin panniers, seating for two, twin disc brakes up front, a drum in the rear, telescopic forks, and twin shock absorbers in the rear until 1985 when they were replaced with a more advanced monoshock.
As with almost all BMW motorcycle engines of the era, the R100RT has a horizontally opposed twin with a capacity of 980cc and it’d of unit construction with a 5-speed gearbox and a shaft drive to the rear wheel. This air-cooled motor has twin overhead valves per cylinder, twin Bing constant depression carburettors, a compression ratio of 9:1 to 1, and 70 hp at 7,000 rpm with 56 ft lbs of torque at 5,600 rpm.
Due to the high build quality, many examples of the R100RT have survived to the modern day. They’re now popular targets for custom motorcycle builders due to their toughness, daily usability, and the fact that the frame was reinforced for the fairing fitment – meaning they can take a beating.
A BMW R100RT Custom by Other Life Cycles
When this R100RT arrived at the garage of custom motorcycle builder Sean Zeigler of Other Life Cycles he breathed a sigh of relief. The bike was in excellent condition from front to back, this significantly reduced the amount of preparation work needed before the custom build could begin.
Sam had sent through a slew of images of custom BMWs that he liked, so Sean had a lot to work with. The basic theme was going to be the age-old Colin Chapman mantra – simplify, then add lightness.
The fairing was removed, as was the original subframe, gauge cluster, seat, and all lighting.
“Let’s start with influences. Sam provided a stack of samples images of similar motorcycle he liked and allowed me to design and build this bike using those influences as a starting point. Since landing on the motorcycle scene a few years ago and having met and become a friend of a lot of custom builders
There is probably a piece of a lot of peoples work in this build. I will readily own taking inspiration from Kevin Dunworth the tall red headed viking motorcycle builder from Delaware, as well as Tim Harney – the New Yorker who models in Honda ad campaigns, and Aussie metal working wizard in Chicago Craig Rodsmith.” – Sean Zeigler, Other Life Cycles
A slew of new parts needed to be fabricated for this build, including aluminum front and rear fenders, a rear subframe hoop and lugs to attach to the stock mounting locations, a battery box that was relocated under the frame, a custom wiring harness and electronics tray under the tank, a spotlight bracket to mount to the crash bars, a relocation bracket for stock ignition switch under the seat, and an aluminum seat pan.
Sourced parts for the build include a Path Finder 7″ LED headlight, and Acewell tach/speedo, a Prism Supply brake light, Kenda K761 tires front and rear, a lightweight Antigravity AG-1201 lithium-ion battery, the Motogadget M-Unit basic, Motogadget M-blaze bar end turn signals, Motogadget M-pin rear turn signals, and Motogadget M-switch handle bar switches.
A set of vintage KTM 7/8″ handlebars were traded for the original and the forks were uprated with Racetech fork springs specifically rated for Sam’s weight. In the rear there’s a YSS fully-adjustable monoshock, up on the handlebars there’s a Nissin master brake cylinder, custom Goodridge front brake lines, a Bbllet master cylinder reservoir from Dime City Cycles, and a set of Cone Engineering reverse cone slip-ons that were ceramic coated.
Angie Dixon did the upholstery on the seat with cashew leather, Kenneth Cooper did the paintwork and pinstriping, and Chris Moos helped with plasma cutting parts for the subframe brackets, battery box, and Ignition switch relocation bracket.
The completed bike has a clean, minimalist look that’ll appeal to almost everyone, and it’s perfectly suited to being ridden daily on the streets of McKinney, Texas. The only problem is how Sam’s young twin girls are going to eventually decide which one of them gets the heirloom BMW.

Police putting more emphasis on mental health
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mental health is a topic that many in law enforcement didn't want to talk about for decades, and many still don't.
"Policemen are good problem solvers, but not always in our own personal life," Kansas City, Kansas Police Chief Terry Zeigler said.
But in the last few years, police departments have started trying to change the stigma through training and peer support groups.
"The same skill that you have in seeing or identifying someone in mental crisis out on the street may be something you see similarly while you're at roll call sitting next to somebody," said Major Rance Quinn, a mental health instructor at KCKPD.
Quinn has helped the department develop its crisis intervention team, in which officers work with licensed mental health professionals to improve the way they make contact with civilians in a crisis. Zeigler said in 2015, every officer was required to receive that training.
As crisis intervention training has ramped up, so have peer support groups, where officers can talk to one another confidentially and freely. Dispatchers are also included in the groups.
Certain officers will be assigned to be the point person for their peers. They will document when they've had contact with a peer but will not share what was discussed, unless someone's life is in danger.
Most police departments around the metro, like KCKPD, have started an official peer support program within the last few years.
All departments have some sort of resource dedicated to employee mental health, whether it's an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provided by the city or a police chaplain program.
Capt. Kathy Morgan with the Overland Park Police Department is one of 24 peer support officers. She helped the department launch its program around two years ago and said it's been very successful.
"It may just be a five-minute conversation. It doesn't have to be anything in-depth," Morgan said. "And these peer support individuals are people who are just good listeners, that's a huge part of it."
Independence police started their peer support program about a year ago, in direct response to the shooting that seriously injured Officer Tom Wagstaff, police spokesman Officer Luis Virgil said.
Virgil said his department has eight peer support officers.
In KCK, Zeigler said his department is now putting an emphasis on taking care of their own. Mental health became even more of a priority after Officer Dave Melton and Detective Brad Lancaster were killed in the line of duty in separate incidents in 2016.
"When we lost Lancaster and Melton, one thing that became apparent to me is that we weren't doing a whole lot, we weren't doing a good job of trying to take care of the mental health of our officers," Zeigler said. "There is a compounding effect of the things you see on a daily basis that over the life of a 10-year, 20-year career, can destroy your life. It's one reason we have more suicides than we want to talk about. We have more divorces than we want to talk about."
Zeigler said the peer support program has made a huge difference in the way officers handle issues — both work and personal.
"Because we've all been through those ourselves," Quinn said.
On Dec. 3, KCKPD negotiated for more than 24 hours with a woman in crisis who had her children in a room at the Holiday Inn on Rainbow Boulevard and refused to come out. KCK police found out she was a 22-year veteran of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department who had been on administrative assignment since May.
Currently, KCPD does not have a peer support program and is working on enacting one.
"In situations like that where the person just does not have the ability to cope, then we need to be able to recognize that and say, 'hey they do need some help,'" Quinn said.
Zeigler said that as a leader, the shift in mental health stigmas starts with him, and he realized it when Melton and Lancaster were killed in 2016.
"To sit there and cry in front of your men and women, that's not how I came on the PD. It was, 'Suck it up, hold your composure, no emotions, get off work and go deal with it however you need to,'" he said.
Quinn said that in some cases, people will begin to abuse substances in an attempt to deal with their issues.
"We see these things over and over again and it becomes difficult to deal with. So, a lot of people will turn to self-medication. They'll start drinking alcohol or doing other things that begin to self-destruct who they are," Quinn said.
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas recently approved $20,000 in the 2019 budget for police mental health wellness exams.
Before, there was no budget at all for the exams. Quinn said that the department had to choose who would get a wellness exam due to budget constraints. The officers who dealt with homicide or child abuse would be ranked as the highest priority.
"If you're aware of what happens to you physiologically, then you have the ability to overcome it. I just think it's important for the officers," Zeigler said.
Zeigler finalized his own divorce in January 2018 and says that being on the force definitely contributed to that. He uses his own experience as a teaching point in the academy.
The police chief also gives his recruits the book "Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement" by Dr. Kevin Gilmartin. The book helps recruits understand the emotional roller coaster they’ll go through and how their work impacts personal relationships.
“I wish somebody would have given me that book 27 years ago,” Zeigler said.
He said that mental health issues contribute, among other factors, to why his department’s recruitment and retainment numbers are shrinking. There are just four people in the upcoming training academy, where the number used to be around 15 to 20.
“I believe the number was 60 percent of officers are leaving between the one- and 10-year mark, with 45 (percent) of them leaving between the one- and five-year mark,” Zeigler said.

ZED Talks is a spin off of the widely popular series, TED Talks. The series, TED Talks, is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas in a short amount of time, usually 18 minutes or less.
ZIPD used the same type of idea, giving the professionals only seven minutes to discuss success. Topics on success ranged from success with customers, to motivation to take the next step to be successful, and to how to adapt to change to continue to succeed.
TED Talks Presenters
Ronn Court, President of SEKISUI Polymer Innovations
Chris Hill, Director of Sales & Catering, of Pine Barn Inn
Daniel Fisher, Director of Innovations of West Shore, Inc.
Elisa Grandizio, President of Break on Through, Inc.
Kevin Moyer, Founder and President of Career Perspective
Juli Miller, Senior Vice President of Johnson & Johnson
Terry Zeigler, President and CEO of Datacap System Inc.
Alumni Elisa Grandizio and Juli Miller emphasized the need to adapt and understand change. By being more responsible to change the better off one is to succeed in the professional world.
“Wake up tomorrow and choose resilience,” Miller stated.
Another professional who is a Bloomsburg University alumnus, Kevin Moyer, spoke about success by putting things in perspective. By changing the perspective, it encourages professionals to not just look at a task as another work result, but as step towards their future success.

As you may have seen, today is the last day of publishing for Sports On Earth. I wrote many, many words for Sports On Earth, but I also hosted more than 500 The Will Leitch Experience podcasts. For the first two years, the show was in fact a daily podcast, which seems insane now. I do not know if the podcast itself is going to continue – obviously Grierson & Leitch and WSLS are continuing – but if it does, it won’t be under the Sports On Earth name.
So at the very least, this seems like a good time to reflect on the podcast itself. I don’t know if I’m the best interviewer, but my philosophy on podcasts has always been that if you get two smart people and just tape them talking to one another, you can’t help but capture something worthwhile, even accidentally. I loved doing the show because I loved talking to smart people about things they cared about. That’s what podcasts are for, I think: To dig deep into things with people who don’t usually get to dig deep on things. That was always the goal.
And we had a rather insane assortment of guests, from Patrick Stewart to Peter Billingsley to Red Panda Acrobat. Below is a list of every guest every to appear on The Will Leitch Experience podcast. This seems about as thorough a cross-section of sports media over the last five years that I can come up with.
