I recently got my hands on a bunch of watercolour books and magazines and was instantly inspired to use it myself again after a long time. I was at the time working on this illustration of kids on the market and thought it'd make a great watercolour subject; I hadn't used any reference to achieve a somewhat naive look, and quickly finished what I had started in Photoshop, topping it off with some grainy paper and stain textures (top image). I then went into Rebelle and painted the entire thing again from scratch with watercolours and pencils (bottom image). I wonder if the effort is worth it to also paint the image in real watercolours. Now, which one is better? In both the Canary melons in the front have awful colours ;) The tidier background of the bottom image is good, the richer colours of the top image are nice ...?

To the Opera with Mother

This is a repaint of an older acrylic piece with attempted pouring after I had seen Vanessa Lemen's exquisite portraits grown from abstract marks (back when I used to prime packing paper with wallpaint. It's soaky like mud, but I have come to look at this habit like super warriors training with weights on their arms and legs so they can barely move at first, but when they take those off and move unrestricted - look out! ;)). I couldn't pull it off then, however, I always liked the two fairies. In my head there had been a background fit for an opera but poor planning had made a quick end of that impression. So for the repaint, or overpaint, I gave up on the white trim, and the cape of the larger fairy that had been a splotchy mess got a decent acrylic pouring that is much closer to what I wanted. Also turned out much thicker than intended, causing some crackling, but I can live with that.

Inktober 8 - Frail by Ranarh

Day eight: "Frail". Materials: "I Love Art" Encre de Chine, hogbristle filberts. Vinyl glue. Red paper and Bristol carton, 17,5×25 cm. Method: The figure in drybrush on Bristol carton came first, then I cut it apart at the cutting table, creating gaps. I had to mount it in several steps to copy paper so I could make straight cuts though the entire thing. Then I glued the pieces onto red paper and finally cut it to the right size. Idea: There have been so terribly many cases of child abuse in the media that I felt a need to work out my feelings. I don't often do political art on concrete subjects, but I'm becoming more comfortable with it.
