2023 - The year of Japanese BLs (My 2023 BL wrapped)
After plenty of good BL releases in 2022, I was hoping 2023 would keep the pace and give us even better content. However, I turned out to be very disappointed. In my opinion, the majority of the shows were blank, superficial and had really bad script and bad acting, so there were very few of them I've managed to finish, mostly Japanese ones.
One thing that really draws me towards Japanese productions is that the stories are believable and portrayed in a natural way. Even when the acting has big "anime" reactions, they usually fit in the context. Kieta Hatsukoi, for instance, explores this type of reactions very well and they don't feel cringe at all, unlike most Thai BLs and some Korean ones as well.
Nationalities apart, there's an obvious gold rush that is happening in the BL industry. A lot of companies realized that BL does make profit and are producing a lot of shows, poorly written, poorly casted, but that's ok since people are still consuming for the skinship, right? There's a public for that, so why invest in good, but a little more expensive stories?
Anyway, this is my opinion of course, as a regular consumer of the genre, and I can't help to be disappointed. But enough of the complaining, right? Let's go to the list of my 2023 favorites!
Top 3:
The eight sense
Tumblr media
This BL has entered my list of all-time favorites. Fresh and mature, the chemistry between the leads is amazing. Jihyun's innocent approach to life contrasts really well with Jaewon's harsh perspective and I love the way both of them bond while helping each other to evolve. The feeling of the show reminds me a bit of Skam, another all-time favorite, and I found out that it really was one of the materials they used for inspiration. If you haven't watched it yet, stop everything you're doing and go watch The eighth sense right now.
2. If it's with you
Tumblr media
I loved this show so much! The manga adaptation was beautifully done, they really paid attention to the details. It's a very sweet, heart-warming and honest story. There's no "instant love”: the relationship between them is built little by little, through sincere conversations and empathy. The series invites you to be more honest with yourself and to not be afraid of showing your true self.
3. My Beautiful Man 2 and My Beautiful Man: Eternal
Tumblr media
Well, it's somehow funny that I put this BL on the list, because I hated the first season of My Beautiful Man. However, the second season and the movie explore the motives behind the characters' actions in a deeper way, so the viewer can better understand the relationship dynamic. One thing that I really like about this story is that, although there is a worship behavior from Hira towards Kiyoi, Hira's life is not all about Kiyoi. In the same way, despite the fact that Kiyoi enjoys to be worshiped, he's also unsure about Hira's feelings: does Hira love the perfect, godlike image of Kiyoi he created inside his head or does he love the true Kiyoi, the human being with flaws?
Honorable mentions:
Our Dining Table
Tumblr media
A great slow-burn which approaches the fact that true family is the one you choose, so sweet that almost made me die of too much cuteness.
I Can't Reach You
Tumblr media
A very sweet friends-to-lovers story, which is now on Netflix!
Love Tractor
Tumblr media
A fresh and funny countryside love story. I just love how Yechan is so hyped when it comes to Seonyul. This man must be kept in a jar, protected from all the badness in the world.
Conclusion
Well, although I believe 2023 wasn't the best year for BLs, it did give us some true gems, more productions and more visibility. I've seen news about Kdrama actors working on BL projects that will be released in 2024, so I guess we're having some next-level good content this year.
So that was it for this BL wrapped. I hope you all had great holidays and that 2024 will be full of blessings to all of us! Bye, bye!

Drama: Kieta Hatsukoi special talk
Michieda Shunsuke as Aoki
Meguro Ren as Ida
Tumblr media
Portraying high school boys’ love and friendship that started because of a certain misunderstanding, the youth romantic comedy manga “Kieta Hatsukoi” will have a drama adaptation.  Michieda Shunsuke from Naniwa Danshi and Meguro Ren from Snowman, two who received praise for looking like they stepped out of the manga, will have a special talk about working together.
Getting along because of their favorite SMAP song
Michieda: He asked (Mukai) Koji-kun for my contact information as soon as the drama was confirmed. I think it’s cool how he casually showed care (for his kouhai).
Meguro: We can’t meet personally so we talked through text. But there are limits because of the distance.
Michieda: (laughs)
Meguro: I’m not the type that’s good with long-distance communication so it was hard for me. But when we actually met for script reading and interviews, I feel like we quickly got close during maybe our 2nd meeting.
Michieda: When we talked about something we had in common during an interview, Meguro-kun was surprised when I said our common point was that we both liked SMAP. He previously mentioned on TV that he listened to SMAP’s “Kono Shunkan, Kitto Yume Janai” while going to practice.
Meguro: It’s because until now no one had liked that same song that I liked a lot. So I was very happy that you liked it too!
Michieda: We both got excited (laughs)
Meguro: Micchi, do you inform your members when you get cast in a drama?
Michieda: I don’t tell them much of the details. When drama becomes the topic while chatting with members, I tell them when I find the right timing.
Meguro: It’s hard to find the timing to tell members about a solo job, right?
Michieda: That’s why before the release of news, there are members who really know, and there are members who only know a bit. But everyone is happy for me. (Nishihata) Daigo-kun even went out of his way to say “Do your best-!“.
Meguro: Everyone in Snow Man also congratulated me. The other day, Raul sent me a mail saying “I’m really looking forward to it. I want to watch it soon.”. Sakuma (Daisuke), who read the original work, kindly said “I can’t see anyone else as Ida”. Wanting to meet everyone’s expectations made me want to work harder.
Michieda: Ida’s serious and awkward side and his airheaded side can already be seen during our script-reading so I am excited to shoot.
Meguro: Micchi is also perfect as Aoki. He already feels like Aoki.
Michieda: Aoki’s facial expression changes quickly, and his emotions vary a lot, so I want to express all that in my own way. The original work is a manga, so expressions like Aoki’s bulging eyes when staring at the eraser is hard to do (laughs).
Meguro: It’s not as much as Aoki’s, but Ida’s facial expressions are also often comical so I want to express that properly. Ida is someone who says what he genuinely thinks about Aoki, so I want to be able to properly do those cool scenes.
Michieda: In a photo shoot today too, I got shy just by staring at Meguro-kun. Aoki also has a lot of scenes where he gets shy because of Ida. I’m still thinking if it’s ok to release those as it is (laughs).
Meguro: Then, I will work hard to make Aoki feel shy (laughs).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Would you two get along if you were actually classmates?
Meguro: I think we would get along. Because I find myself enjoying our conversations, and I feel like we really have the same wavelength.
Michieda: I feel the same. But Meguro-kun has a cool image so I might need courage if I want to talk to him.
Meguro: If our heights were the same as now, would we be next to each other if we were asked to line up according to our height?
Michieda: Ah! In school assemblies!
Meguro: We would be able to talk then.
Michieda: I feel like once we talk we would find out that we have a lot in common and then we’d get closer.
Meguro: Rather than an extrovert who loudly has fun with a lot of people, I find someone who stays alone in the classroom more interesting. Micchi has that image. Am I wrong?
Michieda: I am very noisy once we get close, but I am very shy at the start (laughs).
Q: Any episode when you felt your heart skip because of the other?
Meguro: When he carried me on his back for a magazine photo shoot. I am always the one carrying someone else, so having someone carry me after a long time made my heart skip (laughs).
Michieda: I thought “he’s tall” and “I don’t have strength” (laughs). For me, it was when Meguro-kun princess carried me. No one besides the members did it to me so I got embarrassed. In “Kieta Hatsukoi” Aoki’s heart also beats fast because of Ida, I’m sure it feels like this.
Meguro: I’m used to carrying someone so it was the same as usual for me (laughs).
Q: What kind of “heart flutter” do you want to give our readers?
Meguro: What I like about this work is the part where people have pure feelings and fall in love with another person. I think people who see this drama will also want to experience a pure kind of love that makes you think “it’s because it’s that person that I fell in love”.
Michieda: High school students Aoki and Ida are both awkward but still try to express their feelings through words. I think seeing them try their best to convey their feelings to each other will give that heart-throbbing feeling.
Meguro: The two of us haven’t had a lot of interactions, so please also look forward to our pair’s fresh chemistry.

About your Akaso anon ,I agree at some extent, for most international fans he has this image of canine soft boy thanks to cm, his role in ishihane was similar aka the young clumsy boy in love with a women older than him(similar to Super rich) but rn in Japan he will be know as Takashi, Asadoras are a very powerful dramas that can change people's careers watched for a major wide audience than regular dramas,in his case his role is the weird dude that's into poetry friend of the Heroine (probably his future partner) his role is very popular in Japan, so for japanese he's Takashi & international fans he's adachi
Like you say zom100 should be give him more bost of popularity with a comic role full of action scenes so maybe the perception of international fans can change a bit, I also read he has a rumoured drama with Yamada Yuki this spring on TBS it's seems to be scfi genre.
Also I agree with you, his roles have been better than machida ones at least in terms of scope. I hope he can get different roles he has the range and talent
Omg, yes -- you are totally right about his role as Takashi in Maiagare, and I completely forgot to include it in my last answer! Takashi as a character looks WONDERFUL -- I’m glad Akaso as Takashi is getting lots of attention in Japan. The photos that the NHK Maiagare IG account posts are ultra cute.
Maiagare really has some heavy hitters; Meguro Ren from Snow Man/Silent/Kieta Hatsukoi is also in it, and I know that’s causing squees across Japan. Maiagare is getting subbed extremely slowly, so hopefully by the end of the year, we can watch the series, ha.
But yes -- I hope that Maiagare, along with Zom100, will boost Akaso’s profile and continue to help him get better roles.
One thing that I struggle to understand, if this makes sense, is how contextually popular the actors/actresses we love here on Tumblr are in Japan. Like, if I were to compare the last three male co-leads from the asadoras -- Sakaguchi Kentaro from Okaeri Mone, Miyazawa Hio from Chimudondon, and now Akaso from Maiagare (I don’t think Come Come Everybody had a huge male co-lead) -- Sakaguchi strikes me as by far the most “popular” of those three guys. Like, fame-wise, if that makes sense. Brad Pitt is far more “famous” than, say, a Chris Pratt. Sakaguchi is in big projects with big-name actresses as co-leads (like Watanabe Anne and Kiyohara Kaya). Miyazawa co-starred in a movie with Nishijima Hidetoshi last year that had huge promotion.
I don’t quite think that’s happened for Machida yet (maybe Alice in Borderland is the start of that for him?), and it’s just now happened for Akaso in Maiagare. Machida will be in Fixer on WOWOW this spring, and that has big names and three seasons already attached to it -- so that might be considered a break-out role.
Anyway, I don’t know if any of this quite makes sense, but I wonder if the “fame” level of these guys affects their roles. Compare Akaso and Machida to the Michieda Shunsuke tag on IG, and Michi’s content just overwhelms Akaso and Machida combined (but Akaso and Machida aren’t idols, either). I hope the international attention that Machida is getting in Alice in Borderland, with his cameo in season two, and what Akaso is getting in Japan with Maiagare and Zom100, will get them both better starring roles. Machida in particular really needs some good scripts, either as a lead in a dorama or in some serious movies. The guys need to pay penance for how bad Super Rich was (I’m still so pissed about that show).
I love talking about this stuff, because I love our guys, and I want to understand better how the industry sees their talent! Talking about all of this is so helpful. We were SO SPOILED by how great the writing and the acting was in Cherry Magic, that I just want to see that level of work continue.

2021 bls. Year in review.
Although I already posted this list on my blog, I would also add it here because it is the place where I usually do it. This year I did not watch as many bls as last year, so instead of two different posts, I would just do it in one.
Let me remind y'all this is my opinion, feel free to add your opinion.
Fish Upon the Sky
Tumblr media
It wasn't as funny as I thought at first. I was kinda disgusting at times, and I am sorry oomf... Weak acting, script and just all over the place. Anyways, this series cannot be safe by the dentist or anything else.
I give it a 2, disappointed and I wished it did not exist. Let's see what GMMTV gives the lead in their next series
My Sweet Dear
Tumblr media
My sweet dear was missing some Sazon, this was unfunny, lacked chemistry and just weak as heck. Not to say it was just clickbait to drop the lead single.
3, Disastrous. My Sweet Dear was missing a lot of salt and cooked through.
See You After Quarantine
Tumblr media
There is not much to say, cause it wasn't long so... anyway, no cute moments could save this series, thank you the effort though. The last 5 minutes of the last ep. were the best parts of the whole series.
4, overlylong.
The Tasty Florida
Tumblr media
What's up with the undercooked shows? Tasty florida was not tasty at all. Lack chemistry, decent enough acting, but the runtime was not enough.
5 Disappointed.
Don't Say No
Tumblr media
Ahhh Mame, this is TharnType all over again, like I said, I won't go too deep into the overall commentary because I did in my blog. So, I am so disappointed and disgusted at this series, only thing I loved, the secondary couple.
6, predictable for a Mame adaptation.
You Make Me Dance
Tumblr media
I actually like/dislike this series, it was okay. I would have rather a simpler story because the script was kinda heavy for the time.
7, You make me insanely mad SK.
We Best Love
Tumblr media
A letdown. This series was average, but for the hype everybody gave it... I disappointed but not surprised.
7, Average bl.
Kieta Hatsukoi
Tumblr media
Out of the box characters and enough time to do whatever the writers tried to until the end... Good chemistry and funny moments.
8.5, It could have used more eps for a little more development.
Hello Stranger: The Movie
Tumblr media
Could have work as a second season of just 6 to 8 eps. It did not ruin but it did not develop over the series. So, this was a cute addition to it.
8.5, average in comparison with the series.
Love La Serie
Tumblr media
This series was funny and realistic, it was raw. The acting is a little weak btu the script overcomes that.
8.5, breaking barriers in Latin America, as it should.
Rest of the list would be posted tomorrow since it only allows ten images lol. You can also check it out on my blog!!

Translations and at forth glance, the bug is only growing
So I had that rambling the day before yesterday about a scene in Kieta Hatsukoi volume 1, and then I unwittingly had another one yesterday.
And then hoped I'd be over this being bugged maybe today.
Instead, youtube's recommendation algorithm seems to have caught on my bug, because of who knows what it caused it to present me with a random AMV using footage from the live action drama adaption.
Which had this in it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Japanese: Aoki: サムイわ Ida: たしかに今日寒いな
English subs: Aoki: I'm getting goosebumps... Ida: You're right, it is kind of cold today.
And I was clapping my hands and thinking: Wow, that's a great localization!
I mentioned it already in the first rambling. It's not the simplest line to translate since it's a homophone word play, but making "slow" to be the new "cold", did have me choke-----
To elaborate, this is the Japanese page:
Tumblr media
This is the English release:
Tumblr media
サムイ (samui) primarily means 寒い (cold), but there is also this staple picture of how the air freezes over a bad joke, so samui also means lame, corny or dull. Ida doesn’t catch that, and thinks Aoki is referencing the weather and just affirms that the weather is cold. (Note how samui is also spelled differently in each of their lines. サムイ vs. 寒い.) "Goosebumps" from the drama translation is obviously not a literal translation, but imo a really cool way of transporting both the cold and how it's kind of just awkward. And the mental image of it would suit Aoki so well, since he always has such funny ideas and reactions.
To be fair, I didn't have any good idea how I would best localize that line myself before that, and the best I probably would have come up is something like "so uncool". That was one of the bits that caused me to double-dip on the English release in the first place, so I could check for an example of how it's professionally handled. But "slow" makes no sense whatsoever in this context (why'd you call somebody "slow" who's just moved you to tears??) so I was just consoling myself with that at least dense-Ida is preserved.
But actually there is more to it, which I am only noticing today, and it's making me like the manga even more for it's multilayered dialogues and characterization.
Let me summarize again:
Japanese manga: Aoki: ・・・ほんとう・・・サムイわ お前・・・ Ida: たしかに今日寒いな
English release: Aoki: You really are... such a slow guy... Ida: I guess we are walking pretty slow.
What I'd go for recycling the genius drama subtitles: Aoki: You... I'm getting goosebumps... Ida: It certainly is cold today.
Note: The live action lines are a bit shortened on Aoki's line and have additions on Ida's line. The line itself is literally the same line, but instead of a deadpan manga-Ida who's spacing out at that moment and more like dryly reciting a fact, Live Action-Ida's line holds much more emotional intonation, facial expression and especially gesturing.
Like rubbing his hands.
Like rubbing his hands because it's cold.
Does that ring something? Oh yes, the setup for the touching hands misunderstanding in volume 5 starts as early as in chapter 3 in volume 1. As early as chapter 3.
And now I stare at this "walking slow" and feel even more bugged. Because now it's not just not really making any sense, it's binned the first introduction of a pretty plot relevant character trait.
Also, even if you insisted on the "slow", at least make it a reference to this from 4 pages before by using the same word?
Japanese:
Tumblr media
English release:
Tumblr media
Japanese: 気づくのおせーよ English release: Took you long enough to realize What I would have gone for: You're so slow on the pick-up.
おせ is a colloquial shortening of 遅い (osoi) which means both slow and being late. So yes, this is a perfectly valid translation in the English release. Really no complaints there for just this line. But it's also the only line that could have presented a chance to have that "slow" not come out of complete nowhere. (Although, it still would not make any sense to me for Aoki to say it after Ida's line and his thoughts of wanting to cry----)
Gnnnnnnnggh.
(I'm a notorious frostbite myself by now. This part of Ida is also just big mood.)
(Ok, there's still the rooftop scene in volume 4 which will hint on Ida's cold sensitivity, so it won't suddenly show up in v5 and come out of nowhere and that scene is so clear on that you really can't botch it.)
(This really doesn't destroy the narrative as a whole.)
(I really know the translator couldn't have seen this coming. And it's not like I noticed this on the first three glances either, before the drama snippets drew more attention to it.)
(And I do feel bad for nagging so much on the official manga translation. It's really not a translator's job to read everything after the volume being paid for, so how would they now. And clearly they have tried about this line.)
(And I'm probably also only noticing things because I'm too invested in this series in particular, which also isn't a translator's job.)
(But still----)
(Gnaaaaaaaarghsjdfhjdf.)
It
buuuuuuuuugs
me.
(And now I kind of just want to know what translation that was in that AMV and how the rest reads itself like.)
(Also judging by the AMV, it looks like the drama is following the source material faithfully in its essence and major plot points, but is still taking creative liberties for a number of details to make it flow more smoothly and a little bit less super-deformed slapstick. This has me intrigued now, because how often do you see an adaption that remembers its medium instead of just copy and pasting the source material. And for a change, the drama typical overacting that usually makes me cringe actually suits the tone of being expressly used to be funny.)
(.....)
(Maybe this will distract me from this obnoxious bug? tiptoes out)

Later, when asked, he didn’t know what went wrong when. Perhaps their whole mission had – perhaps their luck was simply terrible. After all, the other teams had managed to successfully complete their tasks. It was only him – him and Conan and the FBI agents along with them – that received the short end of the stick.
Kaito had been on a deck, when it happened. He’d been next to a railing over looking the sea, trying to eavesdrop upon a conversation between two scientists he’d placed a bug on. Perhaps that was why he’d survived.
Perhaps that was why he’d survived, when the others hadn’t.

Summary:
Kaito had never planned on becoming a thief, especially not an infamous, international, world-renowned phantom thief. He’d not planned on accidentally revealing his identity to a detective either; the most dangerous detective of all, in a way – Edogawa Conan. Strangely, it doesn’t turn out as bad as Kaito would have thought. But at this point, he’d take what he got, no complaints.
Or
One can’t expect Kaito to go from playing class jester to first-class thieving outlaw in the blink of an eye, can they? So, yes, he made a mistake – a fatal error. And now he’s stuck as Tantei-kun’s handy-man, knee-deep in a case more dangerous than his own.
Whoever called that kid cute and adorable should choke and shrivel and die, because the four-eyed brat was a devil in disguise. With a weirdly passionate heart. Huh. As if there wasn’t enough weirdness in his life already.

Kang Yohan huffs out a breath of laughter, “Oh? Did you see the defendant do anything unlawful?”
“I saw,” Gaon licks his lips, uncertain now. Still, he forges on, “I saw him driving in an aggressive manner.”
“And?” Kang Yohan asks, his expression a bit amused, “Did you see anything else?”
A black car, speeding side by side— a hammer, coming down on the yellow hood of the car— two alphas, readying for a fight—
Gaon shakes his head, mute.
Chief Kang smirks, “Thank you for the offer, Judge Kim.” The man spreads an arm wide and shrugs, “But alas, you have no proof.”

“Kim Gaon— Gaon, what is it?” Kang Yohan asks, voice low and urgent, “What do you want?”
Gaon doesn’t understand the question. Isn’t it clear enough what he wants? He bucks up a little, dragging his body closer to Kang Yohan’s. Thoughts on Kieta Hatsukoi, pt. #1:
I just started episode 3 of Kieta Hatsukoi, and so far the plot can best be described with two pictures:

and

Also:
Darn, the communication is to healthy in this series (apart from the 1,001 misunderstandings 😂). Immediately confiding to your friend that you have a crush om the same dude as her…as a guy…in a BL? Wow, that was unexpected, but I can’t to see more of this type of solidarity in future series. ✨
Also, the way that Hashimoto at the same time unequivocally validates Aoki’s feelings is absolutely heartwarming. 💓
Update: lmao, yet another misunderstanding? 😅 This show keeps on giving!
Even more validation for burgeoning queer feelings? Hashimoto is quickly on her way to become my new favourite character! 🥰
They are so awkward it’s adorable ☺️
POV: your crush’s mum has an image of you and your crush as Cinderella and Prince Charming 😳
Ahh, sketching your crush’s portrait…I’m getting reversed déja vu about Not Me episode 8. 🤡
Poor Aoki, unintentionally 🍴ing up your good luck. Now why does that sound do familiar? 🥲

Two Johnny & Associates Idols to Star in Vanishing My First Love TV Drama
Two male idols from Johnny & Associates are confirmed to star in the forthcoming live-action TV drama adaptation of Wataru Hinekure (story) and Aruko (art)'s shoujo manga Kieta Hatsukoi / Vanishing My First Love - Shunsuke Michieda (19 / Naniwa Danshi) and Ren Meguro (24 / Snow Man).
The story follows Aoki, who has had a crush Hashimoto, a girl sitting next to him in the classroom. One day, Aoki sees an eraser he borrowed from Hashimoto with a heart and a name that seems to be Ida's, a serious boy in the same class. Furthermore, Ida sees the eraser and mistakenly thinks that it is Aoki's and that Aoki might like him.
Michieda and Meguro are cast as Aoki and Ida, respectively. It is the first time for both of them to play in a romantic comedy drama. Michieda says, "I hope I can play Aoki with an honest heart, interpreting him in my own way without destroying the image of the fans of the original manga. And Meguro adds, "I wish that Michieda-kun and I can continue to build up our relationship and have fun filming so that we can become two wonderful friends like Aoki and Ida."
It was also confirmed that the TV drama adaption is set to premiere on 24 stations of the TV Asahi network in October 2021.
The drama's first key visual is inspired by the cover illustration of the manga's 1st volume.
