Summary: In which Ainosuke is a good father. (I’m weirdly invested in Hitomi, too. What is this? She was just supposed to be a throwaway plot device. D: ) [Adam Appreciation Week 2021 | Day 6: beach day / high school / nightmares ]

A scream punctured the silence.

Instantly, Ainosuke snapped awake, rolling out of bed and snagging his robe as he headed toward the door.

"Ai?"

A trembling voice called out after him, but he didn't even turn around as he wrapped the robe around himself.

"Stay here," he ordered as another scream echoed in their ears. It was a cry of pure terror, and it made Ainosuke's heart race as he ran out into the hallway, nearly colliding with Tadashi as the other man rushed toward him.

"Aino--"

"Stay with my wife!" Ainosuke didn't even let him finish, grabbing him by the shoulder before shoving him towards the bedroom. Without waiting to see if Tadashi listened, he ran down the corridor, his feet whispering against the wooden flooring. As he approached the nursery, he could hear a second sound, a faint sobbing, and he stopped just outside the door. Gingerly, he reached out and grasped the knob with the tips of his fingers, lightly twisting it and letting the door swing open silently with its own weight as he leaned against the wall, peering inside.

From his vantage point, he could see Ryouta curled up in a ball on his bed, apparently crying, though he didn't seem to be hurt in any way. There wasn't any response to the door opening, either, so Ainosuke cautiously stepped into the room, looking toward the other bed. For a moment, his heart stopped to find it empty, but then a weight crashed into his legs, drawing his vision down to where Akemi had wrapped her arms around one of his thighs.

"Hey, you okay, kiddo?" he murmured, bending over to pull her into his arms. Immediately, she wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her wet, burning face into his shoulder. He made some soft, soothing noises as he lifted her up, carrying her over to Ryouta's bed and sitting down next to his son, resting a hand on his back and starting to rub soothing circles.

"What happened?" he asked both of them, but they were too agitated to be understood, so he just continued to sit with them, letting Ryouta crawl into his lap as he rocked them, trying to calm them down. As he did, his eyes scanned the room, looking for anything out that was different or out of place, but it looked the same as it always did. Two beds and sets of furniture, enough toys scattered on the floor that it was hazardous for anyone who was trying to walk through the room--including potential kidnappers, the windows locked, the two children in the pajamas they'd been wearing when they'd been put to bed...

As his eyes made their way back to the door, he saw Hitomi and Tadashi standing there hesitantly, and he nodded slightly, inviting them in. Instantly, Hitomi flew to him and the children while Tadashi followed at a more sedate pace, each of them also sitting down on the bed beside Ainosuke.

When the sobs had finally quieted down to hiccups and sniffles, Ainosuke asked again. "What happened?"

"Had a bad dream," Akemi muttered, her voice muffled against his shoulder. "You were all on the ground. You, Mommy, Daddy, Ryouta. There was blood everywhere, and when I screamed, you didn't move. And then I was running. And I didn't know where I was. But it was dark, and cold, and nobody was there. And... and... and... and there was something scary. I don't know what it was, but it was chasing me. And then... and then..."

She started to cry again, and Ainosuke let Hitomi pull Ryouta into her own arms so he could hug the older girl more tightly, running his hand through her hair.

"It's okay, baby. It's okay. It was just a dream," he reassured her, his voice soft. "We're not dead. See, we're all here, and we're all fine. I won't ever let anyone hurt you, I promise. Not you, not your mom, not Tadashi, not Ryouta. Not me, either. I promise."

He didn't even really know what he was saying, instead just filling the silence with comforting words as he rocked his daughter in his arms. Her nightmare had probably woken her up screaming, and then that had startled Ryouta, setting him off as well. Still, he was glad that it wasn't anything more serious: when he'd first heard her cry out, he'd feared the worst. An abduction, maybe even murder, even though he knew that they owned the best security system that money could buy.

Was this simply the fate of being a parent? To perpetually live with worry over every small happening in their children's lives? Or was he overreacting? He couldn't ever remember his aunts hovering over him like he did over Akemi and Ryouta, but Tadashi and Hitomi had never called him to account for his actions. And this time, they had clearly been just as concerned as he was.

"Ainosuke."

Ainosuke looked over at Tadashi, who was speaking in a low whisper so as not to disturb the children again.

"Shall I go to the kitchen and warm up some milk?"

Ainosuke smiled fondly at Tadashi before nodding his head.

"Add a little honey, too," he replied quietly. Both of the children seemed to be dozing off, now that the edge had been taken off their fear and they'd cried themselves into a fitful state of exhaustion, but it wouldn't hurt. Akemi mumbled something, and Ainosuke turned his attention back to the girl while Tadashi slipped away silently.

"What was that, darling?"

"Can I sleep with Daddy?" Her voice was heavy with sleep, and Ainosuke smoothed her hair back so he could press a kiss to the top of her head.

"Which Daddy, Akemi?"

"Both."

Ainosuke raised his head and turned to look at Hitomi, who met his eyes and shrugged in a "well, what can you do?" sort of way. It never seemed to bother her that her biological child seemed to be more attached to Tadashi than to her and Ainosuke. Nor did she ever resent Tadashi for the relationship that he had with her husband: if anything, she and Tadashi seemed to get along even better together than Ainosuke did with either of them. If it weren't for the fact that they had no romantic interest in each other, he might actually be worried.

"Alright, you can sleep with Tadashi and me tonight," he reassured Akemi, looking up as Tadashi re-entered the room with two mugs. But both Akemi and Ryouta seemed to be fast asleep again, so the three of them shared the drinks between themselves before getting up, carrying their children with them back down the hallway.

Outside the master bedroom, Ainosuke let Tadashi take the girl so he could hug Hitomi around the shoulders and kiss her good-night before leaning down and also pressing a soft kiss to Ryouta's forehead. The boy shifted slightly, but he didn't wake, and Ainosuke waited until Hitomi had stepped into the room and closed the door behind her before continuing down the hall and walking into Tadashi's room.

The other man had already settled down with Akemi on the bed, and Ainosuke lay down beside them, smiling as he bent over the girl to capture Tadashi's lips with his own.

"Good night, Tadashi," he whispered, laying back down. Carefully, he draped his arm over their daughter before closing his eyes.

The last thing he heard was a soft, "Good night, Ainosuke."
