Behind the Screen: Black voice actors who bring fictional librarians to life!
Tumblr media
From left to right: Harriet D. Foy, Regi Davis, Chris Jai Alex, Ike Imadi, and Kimberly D. Brooks
Part of understanding fictional librarians is understanding those behind the screen, especially when it comes to anime and animation. [1] I plan to do more posts like this if I find additional fictional librarians, so this post is the beginning of what I call the "Behind the Screen" series, hopefully getting some interviews with some of these voice actors too. I'm starting with Black voice actors in this first part of the series.
This post is reprinted from Pop Culture Library Review and Wayback Machine.
About the voice actors
Perhaps the most prominent Black voice of an animated librarian is Harriett D. Foy. She steals the show with the chief librarian of the Stanza, named Clara Rhone in Welcome to the Wayne. Foy is known for roles on Broadway, television, film, regional plays, regional musicals, and concerts. Rhone was her first animated role.
Just as powerful is Ike Amadi, a Nigerian man who voices a librarian named voices Cagliostro in a What If...? episode ("What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?"). Imadi has voiced characters like Agency Boss / Subquatos in Kid Cosmic, Officer Mantus / Platoon Sergeant in Love, Death & Robots, Angor Rot and Detective Scott in Tales of Arcadia, to name a few.
Most curious of all, in terms of Black people voicing animated librarians is Kimberly Brooks, also known as Kimberly D. Brooks. She voices an uptight librarian in a DC Super Hero Girls episode ("#SoulSisters Part 2"). Apart from voicing Elephant Grandma in The Cuphead Show!, she voiced characters such as Sky Young in Arcane, Teela and Eldress in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Skara in The Owl House, Amsaja in Cleopatra in Space, Allura in Voltron: Legendary Defender, young Mari in Vixen, and over 10 characters [2] in Steven Universe and Steven Universe Future, most prominently Jasper.
Other Black voice actors include two Black men: Regi Davis as George and Chris Jai Alex as Lance in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Davis and Alex are seasoned voice actors. Davis has been in countless television, theatre, and film productions. Alex has been working in the entertainment industry since 2005, starting at the bottom. He has voiced at least 40 characters according to Behind the Voice Actors. [3]
About the characters
Tumblr media
From left to right: Clara Rhone, O'Bengh, Unnamed librarian, George, and Lance
As I wrote in my review of Welcome to the Wayne, Clara Rhone is one of the "very few librarians of color in popular culture" and works with others at the library, emphasizing the value of these institutions as places of knowledge and understanding. Clara also has a granddaughter named Goodness, who is a library ninja, and is voiced by another Black woman: Charnele Crick.
Just as striking of a character is Cagliostro in What If...?. As I wrote in my review of that episode, he masquerades under the name "O'Bengh," and runs the Lost Library of Cagliostro, a library-temple. He tries to the best of his ability to help Doctor Strange, as he "grows out of control." He attempts to warn Strange but is unsuccessful and ends up dying in the library, taking on a number of roles in the episode at the same time: all-knowing person, a medic, and a sorcerer, while happening to be the only librarian. It is unfortunate that he is never shown outside the library.
The librarian that Brooks voices is interesting, as the unnamed librarian in the DC Super Hero Girls episode is uptight. I suppose this makes the character interesting and gives more life to it, but the character is very stereotypical and straight-lace. She voices two characters in that episode: Bumblebee and the Librarian, according to IMDB. One day, if possible, I'd like to ask her about that character.
Then there's George and Lance in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Both call themselves historians but they run a family library. They help the protagonists Adora, Glimmer, and Bow translate an ancient message and keep their library open for as long as they can, before abandoning it. Even then, they provide vital information which helps Adora and her friends stop the vile Horde from destroying the world and universe.

Notes
[1] Not profiled in this series is Emilio Estevez (who voiced Stewart Goodson), Jeffrey Wright (who voiced Mr. Anderson), and Jena Malone (who voiced Myra) in The Public. For Malone, also see her Facebook and Instagram pages here and here. I also cannot include the 30 webcomic characters I have included on my "List of fictional librarians" page, nor the unnamed librarians in a Revolutionary Girl Utena episode ("The Sunlit Garden – Prelude"), the Black male librarian in a We Bare Bears episode ("Our Stuff"), Isomura in Let's Make a Mug Too episode ("The Garden of Sky and Wind") as her voice actress is not known. Voice actors of the librarian in Steven Universe episode ("Buddy's Book"), Librarian in Futurama episode ("The Day the Earth Stood Stupid"), Librarian in Zevo-3 episode ("Zevo-3"), librarians in The Simpsons, librarian in Martin Mystery episode ("Return of the Dark Druid"), librarian in Martin Mystery episode ("The Warlock Returns"), unnamed librarians in Phineas and Ferb episode (“Dude, We’re Getting the Band Back Together”), another librarian in Martin Mystery episode ("Return of the Dark Druid"), librarian in Amphibia episode ("True Colors"), Arlene in Phineas & Ferb episode ("Phineas and Ferb's Quantum Boogaloo"), Librarian in Bob's Burgers episode ("Y Tu Ga-Ga Tina Tambien"), librarian in Phineas & Ferb episode ("The Doonkelberry Imperative"), and a librarian in The Flintstones episode ("The Hit Songwriter") are also not known. Also, librarian in Teen Titans Go! episode ("Magic Man") of Azarath Public Library and Little Squeak in Colonel Bleep do not have any voices either. It is further not known who voiced librarian in Courage the Cowardly Dog episode ("Wrath of the Librarian"), librarian in Uncle Grandpa episode ("Back to the Library"), the librarian in Beavis and Butt-Head episode ("Cyber-Butt"), Violet Stanhope and Ms. Herrera in the Archie's Weird Mysteries episode ("The Haunting of Riverdale"),  Miss Dickens in Carl Squared episode ("Carl's Techno-Jinx"), or Mrs. Shusher in The Replacements episode ("Quiet Riot").
[2] Jasper, Cherry Quartz, Superfan Rose, Shy Rose, Hippy Rose, Angel Aura Quartz, Zebra Jasper, Ocean Jasper (2), Flint, Malachite, Carnelian, and Skinny. She also voiced eight characters in Winx Club.

It was a rollercoaster. Excitement when you saw that first shot. Worry when you saw her potentially being tortured. And then wondering what, if anything, she would say about the warden.

Who is the voice of the female Deputy?
When I saw this question, I decided to try to find an answer.
I looked up all the actors listed in the credits, listened to their voices (in interviews, demo reels, or other videos), and… I’m still not sure who played the female Deputy.
While I usually find it relatively easy to recognize voice actors in French, my native language, it turns out that’s much harder for me to do in English. Also, it doesn’t help that they’re usually very good at changing their voice/accent and that, in real life, most of them don’t sound like the characters they play.
I still believe the person who played the female Deputy is also “Cult Follower Female 5” (CFF5), but it seems to me the actor used a different accent and tone so the cultist sounds a bit “villainous”. In any case, I didn’t find anyone that sounded exactly like the two characters…
According to my ears, though, the female Deputy and the female Captain from New Dawn have the same voice. Outside of cutscenes, the Deputy has 314 lines in Far Cry 5 (which you can listen to here, here, here, here, and here) and the audio files were all reused for the Captain. In cutscenes, so the “lines” that were specifically recorded for New Dawn, the character sounds exactly the same to me, which means the voice actor must have worked on both games.
I looked at the names that appeared in the credits of the two games and narrowed the list down to the 15 (+1; see below) likeliest candidates, so here are the people who, in my opinion, could potentially be the voice of the female Deputy, as well as, when the information was available, either in the game or on IMDb, which character(s) they played:
Claire Armstrong
Kailea Banka
Carolina Bartczak (Cult Follower in FC5; apparently not in FCND, but you never know)
Kimberly D. Brooks (Gun for Hire)
Nicki Burke (Cult Follower in FC5, Selene in FCND)
Lucinda Davis
Stacey DePass (Nana in FCND)
Amber Goldfarb (voice of Faith’s Priestesses, “Cult Follower Female 3”, and, I believe, Rae-Rae)*
Julianne Jain
Mara Junot (Sherri Woodhouse, “Civilian Female 6”)
Helen King
Erica Linbeck (voice of Anne, but also this and this)
Cynthia Kaye McWilliams (Resistance Soldier)
Debra Wilson
Kim Yarborough
Mayko Nguyen, who plays Kim Rye, was credited a second time as a “voice talent” in Far Cry 5, which implies she may have also played one of several NPC. Since she worked on New Dawn, she too could be the female Deputy’s voice.
Again, English isn’t my first language, and after spending two days listening to all those voices, everyone started to sound the same to me :’) If you’re a native English speaker and/or have a great ear, though, maybe you’ll be able to more easily solve the mystery! We can do it!
*IMDb says Amber Goldfarb played “Noodle’s owner” (the woman who called Ms. Mable for her pet snake) but the files tell me the voice is actually “Civilian Female 6”, so Mara Junot.
And under the cut, just in case, I included all the other female voices who appear in the credits.
FAR CRY 5
MAIN CAST Beryl Bain (Tracey Lader) Sarah Booth (Tammy Barnes and, according to IMDb, a “Civilian”) Luisa D’Oliveira (Deputy Joey Hudson) Jenessa Grant (Faith Seed) Debra McGrath (Nancy) Tasya Teles (Mary May Fairgrave)
VOICE TALENTS Carolina Bartczak (Cult Follower) Lauren Jackson (Skylar Kohrs) Erin Mathews Julie Nathanson (Jess Black) Kristen Peace Murry Peeters (Grace Armstrong) Claire Rankin Cara Ricketts (Dr. Sarah Perkins in FC5, Mickey in FCND) Charlotte Rogers Paula Shaw (Ms. Wilhelmina Mable) Jane Wheeler (Adelaide Drubman)
PERFORMERS (I’m not sure they recorded voices and they apparently didn’t work on FCND) Michela Cannon Roanna Cochrane (Cult Follower) Athena Karkanis Karen Knox Janet Porter Melissa Robertson Alyssa Trask Brandi Marie Ward
FAR CRY NEW DAWN
MAIN CAST Reina Hardesty (Carmina Rye) Leslie Miller (Lou)
VOICE TALENTS Rylee Alazraqui Mary Faber (in the “Additional Thanks” section in the FC5 credits and in Lost on Mars according to IMDb) Camryn Jones Rachel Kimsey Melanie Minichino (Gina Guerra) Carolyn Ratteray Marisha Ray Nadia Verrucci
PERFORMANCE CAPTURE PERFORMERS (again, I don’t know if they recorded voices in FCND) Ava Augustin Tamara Brown Jenny Raven Ajanae Stephenson Lydia Zadel (also credited in the “Additional Thanks” section in FC5 and a voice in Lost on Mars according to IMDb)
Good luck!

Note
Are there, by chance, voice files of the female deputy actually speaking, or a name of the voice actor who recorded the sound effects?
The female Deputy never speaks, but it sounds to me like she has the same voice actor as one of the cultists. You can find a transcript of most of her lines in this document if you search for “CULT_FOLLOWER_FEMALE_05”. One of the Angels might be played by the same person too.
I know Randy Yuen did motion capture for the Deputy in general, and maybe the male Deputy has his voice, but there is no information about who played “CULT_FOLLOWER_FEMALE_05” and the female Deputy…
The actor’s name must be in the credits, however, so probably one of these people:
VOICE TALENT Doug Abrahams Marty Adams Claire Armstrong Ted Atherton Kailea Banka Carolina Bartczak Lawrence Bayne Bruce Blain Jesse Bond Sarah Booth Marc-André Boulanger Wyatt Bowen Paul Braunstein Kimberly D. Brooks Jason Bryden Nicki Burke Mark Camacho Braeden Clarke Lucinda Davis Stacey DePass Bruce Edwards Jake Epstein Jonathan Goad Amber Goldfarb Alain Goulem Rob Greenway Gavin Hammon Ian Hanlin Lauren Jackson Julianne Jain Mara Junot Helen King Jameson Kraemer Gabe Kunda Tristan D. Lalla Erica Lindbeck Erin Mathews James Mathis III Jon McLaren Scott McNeil Cynthia Kaye McWilliams Chimwemwe Miller Julie Nathanson Mayko Nguyen Peter Outerbridge Lindsay Owen-Pierre Giles Panton Christopher Parson Kristen Peace Murry Peeters Simon Lee Phillips Geoffrey Pounsett Claire Rankin David Richmond-Peck Cara Ricketts Kyle Rideout Charlotte Rogers Paula Shaw Jesse Sherman Ivan Sherry Howard Siegel Jonathan Silver Dylan Taylor Jeff Teravainen Brett Watson Jane Wheeler Dan White Scott Whyte Debra Wilson Kim Yarbrough Farid Yazdani
And there is a little more information about who played who on IMDb.
This is all I know for the moment... but I hope it helps :)

I just wanted to thank you for all the Shiro and Keith content. I didn't watch past S3 of the show, but Shiro is near and dear to my heart, and I smile every time you reblog art of him. ♥️♥️
Omg, Shiro became easily one of my favorite characters of all time! ♡
Fun fact: I didn't even interested in Voltron, I mean, I heard about it - actually I don't remember that any of my mutuals were into it back then in its heydays - I just checked the plot on Google and decided I wasn't interested in it. :D
And then I became into OFMD and someone in some post mentioned that Rhys Darby has been voice acting in that cartoon series and I became curious, and man, he's gorgeous :D, I've read that he won more awards because of it! (He's Coran, btw.) And so I began to watch, because I spent my so called holiday alone in the end of the summer and I loved so so much! Suddenly rewatched it immediately and now I'm on my 2nd rewatch and began to read fanfictions, too (there are so many, high-quality, very good story, I cried a lot ♡)
I love this story and actually also love the voice acting very much, my fav is maybe Allura Kimberly Brooks), then Shiro (Josh Keaton), but all the actors made an incredible job! And yeah, it sits down a bit halfway (nearby the 4th-5th season), but loved it all along, so I think if you have time, definitely worth a watch, you'll get surprises. ^^
(Okay, it's already too much information, I'm glad that you enjoyed the reblogs, Shiro/Keith is my favorite pairing! 🥺❤🖤🥰)

Can we talk about Dragon Age: Absolution? Can we fucking talk about Dragon Age: Absolution???? I'm speaking as someone who was never played the games though, this was SOOOOO GOOD I had such a blast!!! The story, the characters, the animation, the action, the twists?? the representation?? I know it's an RPG game and yes the d&d party vibes I got from it are unmistakable! Speaking of which - I dived into this show with no knowledge of anything besides one small teaser that looked cool…and gods I wasn't disappointed! And the voice cast??
