i’m replying to this on my personal blog because i do not want to address this on the cloutchase blog. normally, we would delete an ask like this, but it bothers me too much personally.

it sounds like your brother is subscribed to “dead internet theory” which is a fringe conspiracy theory and total doomer talk. it basically proposes that the internet "died" in 2016/2017, and is or will be only made of bots that are generating content for other bots to engage with eternally, and that bot content makes up a majority of the internet in order to manipulate people. it is hyperbolic, using language like "everything online is generated by a bot and you are alone."

idk where he got the idea that it started with discord users, and we aren’t just going to take this information as fact for the sake of making content for our silly website gijinkas. it would be incredibly depressing and irresponsible of us to spread potentially dangerous conspiracy information like this, even if we somehow twisted it into the form of a joke (which we can't). cloutchase is moreso a celebration of the unique environment of the internet. (REMINDER: these are just funny ocs, and while there are serious conversations to be had surrounding actual problems with these sites, cloutchase is NOT the space to be doing so. read the FAQ.)

people believe in this theory because it “feels” true, the internet now feels fake and algorithmically produced and that nobody here is a real person. that’s why many people have nostalgia for “old internet,” where we remember a time where everything was seemingly user run.

but really the main difference between old internet and new internet is commercialization. inevitably, websites grew into businesses and businesses must generate profit. algorithms, advertisements, and ai are much more prominent than ever, flagging algorithms with human bias censor actual people, and so on. seeing and experiencing these things makes it kinda feel like nothing matters or whatever.

what’s actually important to YOUR experience online is asking this: is the majority of content you engage with generated by bots? no!!! you make it your own! the internet is massive, but we still find each other!!! there are REAL people behind this project and receiving your messages. we read everything, you know. WE aren't bots.

bots have always been around the internet, it isn’t a new thing. sure, we didn’t have sophisticated ai generation back then, but spam bots have always existed. malware spread through bots, some ARE bots. in some far off circles of the internet now, there are content farms and viewbotting, but here we are, meeting on this tumblr blog.

the internet will only die when its users decide to stop using it. is this not unlike the y2k scare?

I’m gonna speak over anon because I’m literally terrified of phannies coming after me even though I’ve rebranded, I still get hate anons from them even now which is crazy. Anyway. It’s honestly a relief to read a respectful take on why someone’s left the phandom. Your words put my exact feelings into articulation and I think my main emotion is just... disappointment? I feel like dnp hold their audience at an arm’s length now and for good reason. It’s impersonal, and after what we put them through I think they deserve that. The fact that people are still trying to keep some kind of momentum going, hyping up cookie-cutter content or you know, making aus about a literal REAL BABY just doesn’t sit right with me. It feels good and healthy to move on. They aren’t interesting now. Seeing people running full time phan blogs makes me actually uncomfortable. and you’re totally right. one of the weirdest shifts for me that kinda gave me the final push to leave was the fact that dnp stopped caring about their audience. and the thing is, dnp always seemed different to other youtubers because they had this connection with us. twice daily livestreams, one a week upload from the gaming channel, twice monthly updates between them… take 2018 for example, if you asked any phannie they’d probably agree that it was the best year for us all because it felt like dnp were on this emotional wavelength with us where it was like: ‘okay this is the content we like and this is the content we’re getting’ and it was so perfectly balanced. it never felt like they were just pumping out content for the sake of it. they could take a boring ass game like ‘google autocomplete’ and make a real good video out of it. that was the content and the dan and phil i enjoyed.

and now??? dude. the mere idea that phil went ahead and deleted all his lessamazingphil videos to reach a larger audience is just…….. if i cared more i’d be mad. they so clearly want a different audience now. im sorry to the phannie moots that follow me still but that’s just what i see. phil’s content went from lighthearted jokey funtimes to ‘oh my god you’re a 30 something year old man making content on the same level as fuckin troomtroom and you’re still making butthole face thumbnails to appease the algorithm.’ and that’s just heartbreaking bro. what the fuck happened. i was around for the cereal tasting video (i never watched it i don’t think i’ve watched a single video since last year) and like………… the hype it got? for a low quality looking buzzfeed quiz type video is just… yeah. dude, this goes beyond the argument of ‘BUT JENNA MARBLES MADE THESE VIDEOS!!!! SHE DID IT AND EVERYONE LOVED IT!!!’ and the difference between phil and jenna was: jenna put a whole lot of fuckin effort into those videos to make them unique. not just: trying on makeup! but instead: ‘trying on makeup and then squirting eye drops into my eyeballs to make myself cry to then see which one is best for dramatic crying purposes!!’ there was a whole spin on the take that i’ve never seen phil EVER do. sorry to this man but he really…… isn’t as creative as he used to be. he falls flat every time in his videos and it makes me laugh when i see the same 😯 face in his thunmbnails with the most boring looking video idea painted in bright colours. this is the same man that was making those wacky ass videos in 2009? could have fooled me. are we sure he isn’t working for buzzfeed or something because that’s the vibe i get from him lmao.

Um yeah. The end really got me surprisingly? I think i started out harsher than the album and the songs deserves. At the end i felt like i loved it all in all? Many of the songs have real potential to grow on me. Where would i rank the album? Not sure. Definitely not close to 1-4. Also behind resistance i think. I think i need to listen some more to be really able to judge but the good news is i actually want to listen again so yay. Honestly i love this band so much idk if they will ever be able to make a song i absolutely hate. Maybe i physically can’t? Even if it sounded like i hate some of the songs here. I don’t really. Okay but on another note, I feel like this "ivy tower feel" is way too real. Mostly because of the way tumblr works. If you don't have much followers you won't get reblogged that often (seriously, who goes meticulously through the tags) and then you *feel* like no one agrees with you although there may be lots of people who do. and then you see the popular kids getting 1000s of notes and think.. okay so THAT's what everybody thinks.

That's one of the reasons I dislike tumblr because I think in an open space like for example reddit or better yet an organized forum people could come together without this bias; you just open a new topic and EVERYONE sees it. They don't have to click on it but they see it and "followers" don't matter, just what you say. I get why tumblr sometimes feels overwhelming and adds to the feeling that you're alone because without a decent amount of followers you're just shoutininto the void. It doesn't even matter how much quality your posts have.

Yeah, tumblr kinda sucks - having to reply like this, case in point - but unless we mass-migrate to reddit it's apparently quite a hostile environment to shippers... @k-vichan would have more to say about it but she's linked a post before about redditors talking about shipping and the upshot seemed to me that some are hostile and some ship but really don't talk about it there because it feels hostile, and some admit to feeling hostile and annoyed about shipping... As far as I can tell the community for shipping is pretty small. Tumblr has definitely nurtured a different TYPE of fandom, which I like a whole lot more :P The issues with sharing meta and not getting into echo chambers or feeling like there's only a few ideas that matter is really problematic though.

I follow the spn meta tag and a few variations of spacing/spelling that for the sake of trying to catch some meta I wouldn't have seen but people by and large rarely use that tag to the point I'm not even sure what the main one is supposed to be or who else even looks in it. (I suppose I could start by trying to use it more often as well >.>) I think the tagging has really fallen by the wayside, anyhow, since I can't find a regularly used tag with all the meta in and I think policing out the shipping or conflicting views has really not helped. If you post Destiel meta in the spn meta tag you have to brace yourself that people will jump on you and even I just cba most of the time. I only tag posts with main tags when I am feeling mentally up to the thought that people will see it if I try and signal boost it past my own trusted followers and the circles they'd reblog it to without it going much further. If I accidentally make a post that's too gen and it shoots off into the wilds of the fandom I get a dread that it's going to attract wanky attention, and I know I can hack it when it comes.

I think though, the only way with how tumblr currently is, is to actually have people use and follow a main meta tag and for that tag to gain cross-fandom approval for use again or at least to expand so the people who feel like they're not going to get heard but want to contribute can get their voices heard again, even if it’s within our echo chamber flooding the gen tag with Cas and Destiel meta and standing ground that it all IS supernatural meta so fuck you >.> 

I mean, the only want to do this would be to encourage as many people as possible to follow a generic spn meta tag that’s easy to remember/share/find and then for everyone who thinks they have something to say to then commit themselves to routinely using the tag. And for us to accept it's drawing attention and weather it when it does. Because it's shocking how you can make a few harmless posts and invite the most pointless hate. (I'm still not over someone taking that reindeer joke as a sign of the Destiel fandom's moral degeneracy :P)

I don't mind it, I think it's kinda funny when someone reblogs a post with incoherent rage that I dared say this that or the other about something they don't agree with (from the wanky hate-filled anti-destiel side of things that don't understand we're having fun but not at their expense until they make it at their own expense), but I also know that I've got the mental resources to not take it personally and mostly just to work out if I want to respond first to make a joke of it to everyone to show it's not harmful or meaningful, and then block, or just block outright. 

I mean, that's a decision everyone has to make if they're going to say things. I see people making harmless posts about having, like, their own personal revelation about the siren episode, whacking the 3 line post up on their personal blog, and the entire hate crew descends on them, because the entire point is they want to stop people talking about these things they don't like, so they bombard the soft targets. I am not a soft target and they can see that easily, so I don't get this shit (and I pre-blocked a whole bunch of them)... 

I think honestly they'd bombard pretty much anyone they haven't seen expressing an opinion before as a soft target and especially if you're talking about things personal to you or seeming innocent of the trouble you're about to wade into like you haven't had much experience of fandom because you're saying something as if for the first time or whatever. I can see what makes them leap on these people and there's almost no way to warn them that they're about to get the impression that fandom is a hateful place where their ideas aren't welcome. In that environment, finding faction-y echo chambers is much much safer, but in THAT environment the loudest voices are the ones echoing everywhere so it's bad for inside the group for people to feel they can speak up too.

So... idk, I think it would be worth trying to get a general spn meta tag into more popularity since people *do* post in them (and I follow because I want to see those posts, and give some the circulation they deserve) but people use these tags right now only sporadically and with limited range. Posting in the destiel tag with headcanons or gifs gets you a much wider audience than the spn meta tag :P I'm honestly going to have to check with Mel what the main tag people used to use even is. I searched "supernatural meta" on the search function rather than the tag when I first found the community, and located people that way but that was back in season 9 and I think people actually used the tag more regularly then, or tagged “supernatural meta” or the algorithm picked them up or something.

However if I'm the only one who dumps a whole bunch of thoughts into the spn meta tag I'm still going to be the loudest voice so this it would have to be something people actually want to do as a group going forwards, for safety in numbers and also so that their voices get a slightly more equal platform?
