Aug. 17, 1798 - Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte and Désirée Clary got married in Sceaux.
Except for his relationship with Cathérine Lamour, not much is known about Jean-Baptiste’s previous relationship history but in the military his nickname was ‘Belle-Jambe’ (‘beautiful leg’) which is said to have been a hint to “his ability to appeal to the opposite sex”.
When it comes to Désirée we have more knowledge about her history. For example, we know that she had previously been engaged to Joseph Bonaparte. The two got to know each other after he found her sleeping in a waiting room and then walked her home. Through Joseph, Désirée got to know his younger brother Napoleon who took a liking to her and suggested that she should be engaged to him instead, and Joseph to her sister Julie. Something everyone involved thought was a good idea.
Julie Clary and Joseph Bonaparte went on to get married the same year whilst the next year, in 1795, Napoleon ended the engagement with Désirée. In 1797 Désirée moved with her sister and her husband to Rome where Joseph was ambassador. There she became betrothed to Mathurin-Léonard Duphot, a French general. The betrothal was more or less arranged by Napoleon and Désirée herself is said to not have been enthusiastic about the plans. However, two days before the intended wedding, an anti-French riot broke out in Rome and Duphot was killed in the unrest. Later in her life, Désirée vehemently denied that the engagement to Duphot ever happened.
Back in Paris, she got to know the French general Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. He is said to have given her the nickname “Bonette” and liking arose between the two. They soon became engaged with the wedding taking place later the same year. Since he was a Calvinist and she an atheist, the wedding ceremony was a civil one and not religious.

guys, this “august being added to the line of succession” thing is not that weird. both karl x gustav and jean baptiste bernadotte (karl xiv johan) were added to the line of succession because the previous line naturally ended. karl x gustav was the cousin of queen kristina, who abdicated, and jean baptiste bernadotte, who was this random french guy that was “adopted” by karl xiii. there was also a period of time in the mid-1900s where all princes left the line of succession to marry their non-noble girlfriends. from my understanding there were only two people in the line of succession during that time; carl xvi gustaf (the current king) and prince bertil, who gave up on marrying his non-noble girlfriend in order to be the spare prince. before the current royal siblings had children of their own, there were only three people in the line of succession; the crown princess and her two siblings. i think a logical assumption here is that wille is the only person in the line of succession right now and that’s adding to the pressure he’s under from the royal court. from a historical point of view it’s not that strange that they would add august to the line of succession.

31st August 2022 // Crown Princess Victoria officially opened the new Victoria Lock in Stockholm, named in her honour due to her commitment to water related issues. The new lock will, among other things, provide secure access to drinking water and manage increased flood risks and high water flows. The Crown Princess and her family visited the building site of the lock back in March
“The old lock was named after my ancestor, King Karl XIV Johan. Until just a few years ago, his statue stood here, in what was then Karl Johan’s Square. But when the city of Stockholm started construction of the new lock, we took the opportunity to take him home to Slottsbacken. Maybe he has a slightly less eventful life there, but we are happy to have him home!
I am honored that the city now wants to let me follow in Karl Johan's footsteps by giving the new lock my name. For me, it is also a reminder of the importance of continuing to shine a light on water issues. They are crucial to our future. Not just for us here in Mälardalen, but throughout the world.”

20th June 2022 // Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel attended the Join Sweden Summit, an event arranged by the Swedish Government and Business Sweden, where the Crown Princess gave a speech
"Once upon a time, Sweden was a small country on the very outskirts of Europe. A beautiful country, but quite poor. Cold, sparsely populated and quite far from the center of attention. But now, tables have turned. In order to become the prosperous country that we are today, Sweden has had to open up to the world. To knowledge, to ideas and to people. My ancestor, King Karl XIV Johan, emigrated from France in the early 19th century. And the Royal Palace, that you can see across the water from this hotel, was inspired by the palaces of France and Italy, and built by artists and craftsmen from all over Europe."

Aug. 4, 1789 - Olympe-Louise-Cathérine Lamour was born but died just 29 days old. She was the daughter of 26-year-old Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte and 17-year-old Cathérine Lamour. The baby was baptised the day after she was born in the Saint-Louis Church in Grenoble.
It is said that Bernadotte and Lamour were in a relationship for many years but Lamour died only 37 years old due to reasons unknown. The last two months of her life are said to have been spent in the hospital. According to "Statistique générale du Département de l’Isère 1840" Bernadotte and Lamour had another child together though, researchers have not found any other record of this second child.
Bernadotte is also rumoured to have had a child named Maria Malm, born circa 1815, with his mistress Mariana Koskull. Though, Koskull, who went on to become a lady-in-waiting to Queen Desideria, is mentioned as having died unmarried and childless in 1841.

Bernadotte & Sweden
Tumblr media
"In 1810 Bernadotte was about to enter a new post as governor of Rome when he was unexpectedly approached by a Swedish courtier who offered him the succession to the Swedish crown. In august the same year, Jean Baptiste was elected by the Riksdag of the Estates to be the new Crown Prince. He was adopted by King Charles XIII under the name of "Charles John" (Karl Johan).
In 1814 Sweden and Norway became the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway. When King Charles XIII of Sweden died 1818, the Crown Prince was crowned King, first in Stockholm as King Charles XIV John av Sverige and then in Trondheim as King Charles III John of Norway. His motto as a King were: The love of the people - my reward.
During his long reign of 26 years, the national debt was paid off, a civil and a penal code were proposed for promulgation, education was promoted, agriculture, commerce, and manufactures prospered, and the means of domestic communication were improved. It is said that it was during his reign the origin of Swedish neutrality were born."
