Europe 155 years ago today: Schleswig-Holstein Question (24 Dec 1863) https://buff.ly/2EMk05X Schleswig and Holstein were two largely German duchies which had long been ruled by Denmark. In 1863 the Danes revised their constitution to tie Schleswig more closely to Denmark - outraging German nationalists across Europe, who wanted the two duchies free from foreign rule. Picture taken on my first visit to the former Royal Palace of the Prussian Kingdom in Berlin. In this picture you see the castle at a distance from the beautiful and large castle grounds. Named after King Friedrich I of Prussia’s late wife, the Charlottenburg Palace, completed in 1713, is one of many worth visiting in a nation that through history has been central in shaping the world we know today.

Europe 168 years ago today: Humiliation of Olmütz (29 Nov 1850) https://buff.ly/2TWymFa The Erfurt Union did not last long. In autumn the Electorate of Hesse, which formed the crucial bridge between Prussia’s eastern and western possessions, went into revolt and the Elector called for support from the Diet of the German Confederation, the entity the Union had supposedly replaced.
