do you think things would have been a little bit better had kinjou and albert been just one character? by themselves, their characters really aren't much. would combining them as one single character have made it interesting?

Idk maybe? Like i don't think the problem with them is that they're doing two roles that could be done by one, it's that they're both presented as so integral to the plot, both in the sense that they have history with certain characters and that they drive the plot and protagonist forward, but it's literally never even given 2 seconds of development time, let alone them actually having an effect on canon.

Like why was Kinjou the brother of Ryuuji's dead friend, only for even his dead friend to not even make an ounce of a different to the plot, which meant Ryuuji and Kinjou interactions literally meant NOTHING at best, and worst made the plot even more convoluted and stupid and confusing?

And sure Albert could've been the same guy as the dead friend's brother, but that didn't change how he was supposed to drive Haru forward but essentially did nothing.

I suppose in a sense being the guy who's brother died forcing Haru forward (if they ACTUALLY did something with it and actually made the Kinjoubert hybrid a character with agency and importance) then the impact on Haru could've been interesting, but they would HAVE to have done something to hurt Makoto in the process for it to have any effect otherwise the dead guy plot being relevant to Kinjoubert is still useless and it could just be Albert. Does that even make sense lol

Like basically Albert and Kinjou aren't lacking as characters per se, and don't need to become a hybrid technically if the plot had actually used them as individuals. But if what makes kyoani actually use these new characters they've introduced right at the bloody end for no seemingly good reason is making a mashup of them both and use both their backstories (dead brother & abusive coach, etc etc*) then sure i say Kinjoubert for president

*i do think their histories mashed up would be interesting. Like the closest person to him, the person who introduced him to swimming and is the reason he swam is literally dead, and now he wants to reach out to someone else and fulfill that dream his brother had only to be taken under the wing of someone abusive. But bc he's so desperate to reach that dream, he doesn't notice/care about how awful he's being treated? And bc swimming comes so naturally to him he thinks he has the upper hand with his coach when really mentally he's so broken, which in turn means he starts to push these weird ideals onto Haru, breaking him too?? Also would actually mean something to Ryuuji bc the guy who's effecting Haru so much mentally is half the creation of Ryuuji not only bc of the death of the friend, but also maybe Ryuuji introduced him to the coach bc he was supposed to be the best and Ryuuji just wanted to help in any way he could, but now it's come to bite him in the arse when he realises that Kinjoubert has been so mistreated and he fucked up big time, and now Haru is suffering etc etc etc Like much to think about, but KyoAni doesn't like using braincells
