Nickelodeon recently ran the first 2 movies on their channel, and watching them got me interested in them again (did they ever air the 3rd one yet?). Much moreso now that there's gonna be a 4th and a lot of people are talking.

March Writing Prompt - Flowers

Kamal remembered that his mother Jomina used to love petunias. They were simple flowers that smelled nice and were easy to care for. Before she disappeared, Kamal’s mother would fill the flower boxes of their little square house with petunias in every color. One time, all the petunias she planted were pink. That was before she gave birth to Kamal’s baby sister Shona. Jomina had known that the baby growing in her belly was going to be a daughter, even though Kamal didn’t know how she knew that.

During his years at the children’s home, Kamal would still see all kinds of flowers. The home had hydrangeas growing out front; the aluminum sulfate in the soil made them blue. Mrs. Woolford would receive pink roses from her husband for special occasions, such as her birthday or their wedding anniversary. Janelle and Blair both loved daisies. Lisa preferred canna. Courtney seemed fond of the cornflowers that grew by the fence at their school. His teacher Mrs. Chung once received a potted begonia for a Christmas present from one of his classmates, though she kept it in the window in the classroom rather than take it home. 

Kamal didn’t give flowers much thought because he always thought they were too girly for him. But once, long ago, Kamal remembered that his mother’s best friend Dewey once surprised her with a bouquet of flowers. There were many kinds that Kamal didn’t recognize. That didn’t matter, because he was watching Dewey as he profess to Jomina that he saw her as more than just a friend, that he hoped they could end up together. That he wanted to be there for her and Kamal, even if she wasn’t ready for marriage then. He didn’t know what his mother had said to Dewey, but he remembered that her face was twisted into shock, perplexion, and worry. They continued to be friends regardless of what had happened afterwards.

Kamal didn’t like flowers all that much, but he could always remember other people’s favorites.
