I cannot describe how big of a grin is on my face just reading your liveblog, I feel like in every turn I'm being shown something new about a character I thought myself familiar with. (And by character I mean George, his manipulative moments in chap 1 flew over my head on first reading. I just went "oh he's nice :]", I guess battler likers (me) are just as dense as their fav)
Also I know it's waaaay too early to send in fic recommendations but god once you're finished with umineko you'd love "Wanderlust of the Golden Witch" by KinuNishimura. That long fic is practically canon in my heart.
I keep getting asks/replies telling me they didn’t clock George Ushiromiya as a man with multiple unnamed disorders in chapter 1 when this is a page that exists and I just don’t get it. Blaring sirens go off in my head every time I look at him.
Tumblr media
(Now about fic recs, I’m sooooo many years away from being able to read them but I’ll write your recommendation in a little note here.)
((Also thank you for enjoying my liveblog! I’ll be doing a few hours of reading in a few minutes so feel free to make yourselves ready))

Kinu Nishimura
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kinu Nishimura. ca 1992-2002
Kinu Nishimura is an illustrator that worked for Capcom between 1992 and 2008 and independantly since then. Her work included character design, promotional artwork, concept art and in game graphics. She joined capcom after being impressed by their promotional art in magazines. She played a large part in defining the aesthetic of 90s/2000s capcom arcade games.
Her style is very bright and colourful, taking elements from manga aswell as from traditional watercolour painting which she has a background in. Some of her biggest influences are the realist fantasy paintings of Jun Sueimi who drew promotional and concept art for the Wizardry series in Japan, and AKIMAN the capcom artists which predated her and designed all of the original street fighter characters. She works on manga manuscript paper in liquitex, building on her prior experience in watercolours, or when she wants a lighter touch she'll work with markers.
She's excels at drawing bright cheerful characters and she admits that because of that she struggles with drawing villains, but as a result of that her drawings are incredibly appealing and full of energy. Very noticeabley in a fighting game she renders the character's muscles with incredible detail and energy. While she doesn't often design the characters she draws she very often creates the most defining vision of that character and plays a huge part in how those characters are remembered by players.

danganronpa is like the cornerstone of missed potential because in concept its great but the execution is flawed at best and absolutely terrible at worst (specifically trial 2 of the first game and the entirety of ultra despair girls falls into this the hardest)
yeah for real the concept is awesome but kazutaka kodaka sucks ass and made it bad. there were some good character ideas in there too but the writing also tended to screw them over. if u want a good version of Danganronpa you should read Operation VK by KinuNishimura it's my all time favorite fic. @detectivechiyo knows this but she hates me so she will never read it no matter how many times I tell her to

I've recently begun reading Pact, after finishing Worm, mostly because of yours and others' recommendations! Do you have any other reading recommendations past wildbow, be it serial novels or full-on publications? :D
Ooh, hm. If you liked Worm, you’d probably also like @walterlw‘s The Fifth Defiance, which is in the same vein of realistic and/or clever superhero worldbuilding and has some great characters. Uh, what else, though, going off knowing you liked Worm, and also I know you were into Homestuck back in the day... hm.
nostalgebraist’s The Northern Caves is a fun sort of psychological horror-y thing told through mocked-up message board posts, plus his other stuff (Almost Nowhere, freaky sci-fi psychodrama involving weird time shit, and Floornight, his previous freaky sci-fi psychodrama involving weird time shit) is great.
Do you like Danganronpa? KinuNishimura has a really good fanganronpa called Operation V.K. that goes in its own direction and does some cool shit with robots.
I was about to recommend Floating Point by Stefan Gagne, which is this thing about like, the internet as a self-contained world inhabited by digital people who have no idea a real world ever existed, but for some reason his site is impossible to find- I don’t know if he took it down to sell the physical books directly or what.
I wrote some stuff, but you’ve been following me for a while so I figure you probably already know about Cordyceps and my Overwatch fic.
The Terra Ignota series by Ada Palmer is pretty cool- really elaborate sci-fi worldbuilding for a future Earth where high-speed transportation has rendered geographical nations obsolete, which really gets into the wild political ramifications of everything.
One thing I relate to very much like I relate to Homestuck- in that it was super formative for me and remains really funny and compelling and I continue to recommend it, despite a lackluster ending, being kind of off-putting and hard to get into at the beginning, and most people who were really into it back in the day claiming to have outgrown it- is Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. Say what you will about it being didactic or unrealistic or condescending or whatever, but that shit is still fun.

Have you ever seen any Fanganronpas?
Well, as a writer of one I have indeed seen many Fangan Ronpa stories! Some good, some bad, some amazing, and so on! I’d be here all day if I listed every single one I’ve ever read, but I’ll make a list of my personal favorites that are finished! (I specify this as I’m not currently reading any that are still updating as they’ve either been abandoned or are on hiatus) I also sadly can’t link to any of them because I hear tumblr is all screwy with links right now, but all of these stories can be found on Ao3 if you give them a search.
The Outcasts by ZephyrTisane
This is the fic that inspired me to write my own! It’s short and sweet compared to most, but it’s one of the big Fangan Ronpa stories so it’s worth a read. A sequel called The Remnants was in the works, but it’s since been discontinued, though I wouldn’t turn away people from reading what is there.
Dangan Ronpa: (Éa)Dóchas by RocGate13
This one has a very unique setting with equally unique characters! Taking place in Ireland instead of the standard Japan or even the United States, it leads to something fresh and new! The characters are also very easy to get attached to.
Graduate Meeting of Mutual Killing by ReadingForever
This one features, well, graduated students of Hope’s Peak Academy thrust into their own killing game! This one has two sequels, one finished and one currently being updated, but I think the original shines compared to the second one (the third one I need to read). Give it a shot!
Fangan Ronpa: Universal Despair Sale by sarcasticFreedom
An American killing game that takes place in a mall! All the characters and their relationships are done so well! The art is pretty great too!
Hope’s Freedom is Despair’s Reward series by Craftsdwarf
This is a very long read consisting of three fics. Dangan Ronpa: Hopelessly Misplaced, Dangan Ronpa: Despairingly Displaced, and Dangan Ronpa: That Hopeless Place. Getting into what makes the entire series great would spoil the whole thing, so unfortunately I can’t go too into this. But if you have the time, give it a read! All three of them are great fics!
Danganronpa: Duality by ShortcakeCrow
This story has engaging characters, a new mascot, and a twist that’ll really get to you! It’s honestly probably one of the weaker entries on this list, but it’s still worth the time to check out!
Danganronpa: Operation V.K. by KinuNishimura
Okay, this one I’m still in the middle of reading, but it is complete so I’m putting it on here. This is another huge read, but so far I’ve found it to be worth it. The setting is unique, the characters are unique, the talents are unique, and it plays around with the standard Dangan Ronpa tropes! The twists and structure are amazing, and it’s left me guessing a lot! The only weak point I’d probably give this is the development of its romantic relationships, but it’s not as bad as some fics can get. Again, it’s a very huge read and it might take time to get through it all, but give it a shot if you have the chance!
And of course, just in case you don’t know about it, I gotta plug my own fic Despair’s Last Resort. I put a lot of heart and soul into this story, I still am actually when I get the inspiration to, and it’s pretty much my magnum opus? I don’t think I’m gonna pull off another fic like it unless I write the sequel. But it’s great, it hit it’s 5th anniversary recently, go check it out if you haven’t.
And that’s my official list of Fnagan Ronpas you should read! It may update in the future!

41, 42, 45, 50 c:
Thanks for the ask!!
41.List and link to 5 fanfics you are currently reading:
Operation VK by KinuNishimura (Danganronpa/Zero Escape)
Who We Were by Divisionten (NDrV3)
Nonary Game: Resonance by LeonPianta (@rawkhawkjock) (Zero Escape)
The Lunaverse AU of MLP fics, by RainbowDoubleDash (
The Captain SNES webcomic (YMMV on whether this counts, but it’s pretty damn fanficcy as far as webcomics go. And epic.) (Captain N. Plus Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and pretty much everything else as well.)
42.List and link to 5 fanfiction authors who are amazing:
Eliezer Yudkowsky: His HPMoR fic was my first read fanfic, and his guide to writing intelligent characters is the writing advice that’s resonated with me (not that I can claim I’ve done particularly well at following it) above all others.
Aleph: Basically, just read my answer to Q45. And then read Game Theory.
Flairina: An absolute master of the self-insert fic - I’m taking No-Leaf Clover (Zero Escape) and especially Stand-In (DDLC) as the standout examples. She’s the first author I’ve subscribed to on Ao3, because I want to see any versions of this plot she does in other fandoms.
Digital Skitty, author of Pedestal (Pokemon). I’ve gone on about Pedestal before; I’ll go on about it again.
@i-demand-a-hug: Her Hide and Seek and Catch (NDrV3) is still one of my go-to examples of doing thematically relevant AUs.
45.What is your all time favourite fanfic?
It has to be Game Theory by Aleph (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha). It’s both a magnificent showcase of fanfic style worldbuilding and character development but also the one fanfic that caused me to watch the original, rather than the other way around.
(Seriously, even if you’ve no interest in the source material, I’d recommend the hell out of this fic.)
(Also, I’ve recently realised that there’s no way I can look down on the OPs of those posts about having very narrow tastes in fanfic. After all, Game Theory and the Lunaverse turn out to be the exact same fic.)
50.How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?
Through TvTropes! I picked up my first fanfic (HPMoR) via its TVTropes page and even now most of the fanfic I read I’ve found because they have TvTropes pages.

The Bleeding Heart of the Oborozuka Vampire

Neither an Umineko fic nor a Danganronpa fic, exactly- it's a red/blue truth duel gameboard in the Umineko style, featuring characters from KinuNishimura's excellent DR fic Operation VK.
