my question is.. if kpop is declining what’s next? does the genre disappear or does it just become less prominent? because i read nico’s post and i’m only a little confused. does the “decline” just mean there won’t be anyone peaking like bts and blackpink? or does it actually mean 😭 no one’s gonna pay attention to it anymore. has anyone ever thought about what would come next?

Let me give you my prediction. Instead of kpop disappearing, it will return to being more subjectively niche, which means the subjective good and toxicity will return to being in pockets/fringes like fandoms usually do. What's next is likely to be chinese animation, webtoon, and possibly cycle to a different set of people. What I feel strongly is that Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines are going to be having a grip on the media in terms of dramas and shows to watch. As the world turns, we're cycling back to lots of the old stuff. So for the kpop groups that choose to remain frozen in their chosen drama, they'll do that, but everyone else is going to ride the wave back to 2010s clunky kitsch, campy gaudy style lol. Originally it was supposed to be PSY/PNation were supposed to snatch the crown while everyone was busy fighting each other, but he fumbled the bag. Everyone else under his company besides his idol group kind of fumbled their fuckin bags. Massively wasted their timing. But ofc to throw in tarot aside from just my lil divination predictions: What will be the next king/queen group be like?: KnoP, Moon, PoC, 6oS, Devil, 7oW. They might be the kind of group with potentially an even number of people in it. They have a LOT of blank slate energy, they are not likely to stick to a specific theme or genre. The only thing that may stay consistent is their physical appearances/personalities natural or curated. This group among many is likely to survive a lot of disbandments and scandal around them. They will have many internal issues, but manage to stick to the public well like a long term boyfriend that you're going to end up marrying even if you don't love him. This group could already be in existence or will be coming soon. Their unparalleled strength comes from the lack of an identity surprisingly. They allow the public to drive the car and this will take them VERY fall before the wheels fall off. Will they peak like bts/blackpink?: PoS, likely yes. Due to smaaaaaart marketing. I do agree that Wonyoung is fragile, and her mental health might not be so great. But I also think that the success she has as an idol is something that she holds on to. Like her reputation isn't that bad (I mean, she is one of the most popular members in IVE), she also has a lot of deals and makes a lot of money.

I would say she would leave in the future, but only if she was at a point where she thinks she has everything and doesn't enjoy all that fame anymore.

And as for Rei, I see her being totally sad in her workplace. Like being really frustrated. And as I said in my reading, she would leave, but she fears that the risk she would take might not pay off. I can't word this well, sorry, but I hope you get what I mean.

WayV white girl witch coven 🤣😭 Tarot card concept when!!! In all seriousness though when I really thought about it, it's just some plastic crowns and candles, but they look so expensive somehow. Sorry my very non-aesthetic self don't have any better ways of describing it, but WayV just always looked luxurious to me even back in their Regular days. Their MV felt textually so much more luscious than the 127 version, ironic because 127 lyrics was more explicit about being rich. I recall you saying before that WayV's stylist is one of the few that gets luxury fashion right. With the seasons greetings though, you literally can't even see their outfits beyond "is black". Is it the blurred effect feeding into it? I would love to hear you talk more about what contributes to this kind of look and how their stylists achieve it!

oh a lot of the heavy lifting is done by the fact that wayv literally just look expensive. as a group they have a high percentage of very attractive people, even for kpop standards. basically it's a lot of subconscious association that the stylists + designers are using to make them look expensive, starting with:

pretty people are associated with wealth

technology is associated with wealth

visible and obvious luxury brand logos

the thing about 127's regular is that i think the overtness of the lyrics is intentionally played off of the setting that they're in to make a cute lil ironic comment in the 'started from the bottom now we here' kind of way. for the 127 mv they film in a lot of on location, cramped spaces that are visually crowded with stuff and closer to the dingy side. they also shoot at a bunch of places that are not usually associated with wealth at all (at least to me as a westerner), like arcades, a pool hall, and a go kart track. the only remotely 'expensive' looking place they use is that gold backdrop that i'd be willing to bet is in a hotel lobby. they also use a lot of smoke and bright neon + warm tone lighting. all of these things are generally associated with kitsch, which in turn is commonly perceived to be lower class. there's also very few visible luxury logos; they are wearing a fair amount of designer, but unless you can recognize the burberry or loverboy plaids, it's almost impossible for a normal person to tell. also their 'main' outfits are just embellished suit jackets, which are actually not at all a common sight in the luxury fashion industry. it is however, a very common signifier of 'fancy' in the kpop industry, and has been for a long time. all of this together tells me that they were not really intending for this mv or for 127 to 'look expensive', they were intending for them to look like grimy lil fratboys playing at having too much money.

wayv's regular, on the other hand, is textbook luxury through and through. it's entirely cool tone, clean lines, technofuturist branding. their styling does not use any of the 'matching' type boy group outfits that appear in the 127 regular mv, and there's more visible logoing and use of fabrics and textures associated with ostentation, like heavy patterning and velvet. plus the two lv pieces and the two (i think?) burberry shirts. although i would not call this mv minimalist, there's also a fair amount of negative space, and minimalism + large empty spaces are usually assiocated with wealth bc of the luxury of having that space. i'd be willing to be that 90% of their sets are custom built, and those sets are all places that are associated with money: an indoor pool, a european style theatre, a stock exchange, inside a computer server room, and a LOT of digital screens and visible (expensive) equipment. plus they also set up the techno-branding with see+feel the v, which lends a longer intention to the mv itself. sm is presenting wayv as these highly, highly expensive perfect technological constructs that are above you in status. and that initial branding has filtered subconsciously into how we view them now, even if the concept doesn't strictly match.

also specifically for the seasons greetings: how they made that look 'expensive' is by:

specifically blocking out the clothing + keeping the focus on their faces

using crown props (subconscious royalty association)

applying a heavy filter that fuzzes out the details and pumps up the shine, which draws a lot of attention to the gold accents (gold = wealth)

using a theme that's associated with expensive rocks

For me, spiritual otherkinity is like any other appealing-to-me spiritual belief: I wish I could buy in, but my brain just doesn’t work that way. I think for me I feel like being psychological otherkin is an extended metaphor, since I don’t believe in souls and the idea of a multiverse is mostly a useful way for me to conceptualise how I write fiction.

But it’s a really useful extended metaphor for the self to call myself a dragon, because I feel like a dragon and having draconic impulses is a useful filter to interpret a lot of my quirks through. It’s a shorthand for the longing for flight and the love of collecting my trinkets of cetacean kitsch, retro videogames, and facts about my fandoms, for the way I clack my teeth as a stim when I can feel myself slipping into a meltdown, for the way I grumble and growl and snarl when I’m annoyed. It’s a shorthand for the way I’ve never been able to balance particularly well and wish I had four legs because then maybe my back would hurt less. It’s wishing I had a prehensile tail. It’s enjoying fire and finding safe ways to use it for grounding, in what if I was a more spiritual person might be called rituals. Maybe they are rituals, but in the same sense that brushing my teeth every night is a ritual.

It’s a useful metaphor the way Tarot cards are an open-label placebo for me. I don’t believe in the cards being anything more than cardstock with pretty pictures, keywords, and a random element, but the pretty pictures, keywords, and random element can help me think sometimes. Calling myself a dragon helps me think sometimes and helps me define my sense of Self.

Through his work, Moore appropriates politics, American pop culture, and everyday life creating a visual language that is both humorous and deeply meaningful.  He has always been drawn to the power of visual storytelling, as seen in his series Tilting at Windmills, Get a Clue, and Portrait of a Teller’s Fortune as he brings his imagination to life by combining fact and fantasy. To James, appropriation is not a dirty word. To him it is a word that has been much maligned over the years.  “However, when we aren’t appropriating cultures, the power of appropriation is limitless, “ said James.  “ To be honest, as much as kitsch and camp form the heart of my storytelling art practice, the soul of my artwork is appropriation.  Appropriation refers to taking something of someone else’s and making it our own.
