If I wanted to start a zine, how would I go about doing so?
Hi! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to infodump about zines, this might get a little long ;) There are many different ways to make a zine, but the way we often see in fandom right now follows this structure:
Interest check: Explain what your zine is about, have people hear about it, and collect information on the kind of things people would want to see or make in your zine (usually through a google form, but it can also be a tumblr poll or anything else like that)
Mod Applications: Assemble your team! Social media mod, formatting mod, art/writing mod, etc. This is usually done through a google form. Honestly, when selecting your mods, having people you *trust* is what's most important. So while having someone with experience is good, have people you know you can rely on, like your friends, even if they don't have previous experience.
Contributor Applications: Also done through a google form; get people who want to create through the zine to submit examples of their work so you can choose which ones get in the zine.
Creation Period: All the contributors you selected make their pieces! And then you, or the person in charge, assemble everything together.
Release: If you publish the zine online for free, you can have the pdf available to download on itch.io. If you want to print it and sell it, that's a whole different subject that I'm not very knowledgeable about tbh.
The most important part when your zine is starting out is to get the word out there! Make a tumblr blog specifically for the zine, make lots of posts reminding people of when the interest check/mod applications/contributor applications are opening or closing, when you have contributors make posts to introduce them, etc. I find that having visuals accompanying your posts helps a lot, especially if you have a strong visual identity already, it helps people remember your zine. You can also invite guest contributors; people who you invite into the zine as opposed to having them apply (usually creators you like), so they can help share contributors applications.
I also have a lot to say about things to watch out for when making the zine, mostly time management and participant wrangling, but this is supposed to answer the question "how to get started" so I don't want it to get too long lmao. Just make sure to give yourself enough time to do things like looking through form answers or setting up things. Deadlines are great to keep things moving but remember they are self imposed, so don't make it impossible for yourself!
In terms of resources to help you out, I can redirect you towards the Hermit-a-day streamathon panel both mods of this blog were on to discuss everything that goes into making a zine. I know that on the Artbook to Zinethologies streamathon they discussed zine-making, although since I haven't watched it I don't know into how much detail they go.
And don't be afraid to reach out to other zine mods! We're usually more than happy to chat and give advice (case in point here), sometimes even get roped into modding another zine ;) Beware, it becomes an addiction.
HOWEVER with all that said there are many different ways to run a zine!! You can decide to keep it smaller scale and exclusive to friends or people you know, you can skip the applications and have it open to everyone, have people just send in finished pieces, ... the world is your oyster, really. I recommend to go check out @mcyt-flashzine, which helps people run their own mini-zines!

I was asked to share my homebrewed Reshade preset so here I am! Long download post ahead so I will put everything under the read more 😘
A few disclaimers:
I am a total beginner when it comes to Reshade!
You HAVE to read the README file!
I am assuming you have some basic knowledge about Reshade, namely that you've already got it installed and know where all the directory folders are located on your computer. If you don't, I recommend Googling the necessary info because I'm not much help when it comes to this lol.
I have a lighting mod installed. It is the Fresh Cut Day 3.0 mod, originally by @brntwaffles, and edited with extra lighting tweaks by @auroraeternal (Here's the link) I picked the option with Sunlit Tides water.
This preset would not be possible without the awesome, beautiful, AMAZING luts and shaders by @erasabledinosaur!! If you wanna thank anyone for this preset, go and thank them because their effects are doing the heavy lifting!

RIPPED PAPER EFFECT TUTORIAL

hi! thank u :D (thgweek set referenced)
below the cut are the steps that i took to create this effect. this tutorial is very screenshot heavy and assumes some basic knowledge of photoshop and giffing.
i do my best to try and explain my process so hopefully this is helpful! if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
STEP 1: Choose and arrange your two gifs
with this specific use of the ripped paper effect, there's one gif on the "outside" of the rip and one on the "inside." in this example, the outside is the b&w and the inside gif is the colored:

for me, the outside gif determined the positioning of the inside gif and the position/direction of the rip. as can be seen, outside gif has a lot of space on the left. therefore, i knew i was going to position the subject of the inside gif more on the right so i could create the rip without hiding too much of the b&w gif.
next, you want to arrange the inside gif on TOP of the outside gif. your layers panel should look like this:

STEP 2: Creating the ripped effect
here comes the fun part! in order to create this effect, you're going to need torn paper brushes. here and here are some packs you can download (w credit to owner).
next, create a layer mask on your inside gif. you're going to use the brush of your choosing as an ERASER. then, you can play around with the size and angle of the eraser to create the look you want. this is what the gif and the layers panel now look like:

STEP 3: Adding the paper
in order to add the paper around the edges of the inside gif (where the text goes), you now need to download a paper texture. i found mine on google by searching "paper texture png."
place the paper png IN BETWEEN your outside and your inside gif. this is what everything should look like:

now, similarly to what you did in the previous step with the inside gif, you are going to create a layer mask on the paper layer. using an torn paper brush as an eraser, you will erase the paper, creating the shape you want.
be sure to leave enough room for whatever text you want to be on the paper. also, i suggest making the rips of the paper different from the rips of the inside gif so it looks more organic.
here is what my gif looks like after erasing the paper:

optional: add a drop shadow on the paper layer (right click -> blending options... -> drop shadow)
STEP 4: Adding the text
first, you want to identify the space where you will have room to place your full quote within the paper. if there are no spaces, you can always use your brush/eraser to modify the layer masks.

next, add a layer on top of the paper layer (and below the inside gif). select the text tool and start typing your repeated text!

because you can see which text is hidden by the inside gif and what is on top of the paper, a shortcut i use is the "tab" button and only type words that will be seen.
type the repeated words around the quote you want highlighted:

now, in order to contain the text within the paper, convert the text layers into smart objects. then, create a clipping mask on both layers (right click –> create clipping mask). this is what your layer panels should look like:

with that, your gif should now look something like this, with the text contained inside the paper:

STEP 5: Highlighting the quote
as you can see, it just looked like a bunch of words. so, in order to highlight the quote you carved out in the previous step, add a new layer below the layer of the quote you want highlighted:

now, use a round brush (softness around 10-15% and opacity at 70-80%) with the color of your choice to highlight the words you want.

AI-overviews and suggested answers have made research very annoying lately. Very often the prompted answers are just wrong, even at a casual glance of the article they are stealing from

Add: “udm=14” at the end of search results to remove prompted answers

“It’s essentially Google, minus the crap. No parsing of the information in the results. No surfacing metadata like address or link info. No knowledge panels, but also, no ads. It looks like the Google we learned to love in the early 2000s, buried under the "More" menu like lots of other old things Google once did more to emphasize, like Google Books.”
This was added under the search options as “web” but it is faster to appended the udm option

A simplified view does not replace the declining quality of Google’s results, largely caused by decades of SEO optimization by website creators. The same overly optimized results are going to be there, like it or not. It is not Google circa 2001—it is a Google-circa-2001 presentation of Google circa 2024, a very different site.

The PM Press Warehouse at 21 Emma Street in Binghamton, NY will be hosting the Second Annual Upstate Anarchist Book Fair on May 3th and 4th, 2025.
In celebration of International Workers’ Day, the two-day fair will feature book/zine vendors, a warehouse sale, community organizations, two full days of panels, live music from the loading dock, and much more. All are welcome to join us in creating community, sharing skills and passions, and debating the best way to overthrow the (patriarchal, racist, cis het) capitalist system.
The book fair is an opportunity not only to sell and promote but to create community. You don’t need to identify as an anarchist to attend or participate in the book fair!

Why an Upstate Anarchist Book Fair in Binghamton, NY?
The practical reason: PM Press bought a 17,000 square ft warehouse in Binghamton in 2021. We also purchased a used bookstore – Autumn Leaves – in Ithaca, NY. Over the last year-and-a-half, we’ve filled the warehouse with racks on racks of leftist literature (both PM Press and other comrade publishers). Today it is surely one of the largest repositories of leftist literature in the world. We also have a big parking lot, a developing event space, and connections to a local DIY community with the skills to put together a fun, productive, and thoughtful event.
The political reason: Binghamton is the post-industrial crater left by anti-union, paternalistic warmongers like IBM and the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company. The former headquarters of the New York KKK and current epicenter of upstate mass incarceration, Binghamton is, like many small Rust Belt cities, run by reactionaries who grew up in the city’s golden age and are convinced we’re just a few tax breaks and drug raids away from a return to 1959. We also have a small but dedicated community of activists fighting to liberate Binghamton from these slumlord/cop/petit bourgeois business creep/political elite overlords. We hope events like the UABF will bring together like-minded comrades and crews from across the region to share knowledge, skills, and joy to expand our little networks of radical agitation into a collective force that can challenge capitalism across the county, state, and beyond!
Parking Options:
Street parking is easy to find and plentiful. At this time there is no other parking planned for attendees. As you can see from the map above, the warehouse is located in a residential neighborhood. All streets have parking on at least one side. Many have parking on both sides. There is space for about 100 cars within a 2 block radius. The on street parking signage is generally straightforward and easy to understand. We ask that you follow the signage as directed. Please do not park in any of the local parking lots. Bikes are encouraged!
There is additional street parking on/across Glenwood Avenue and on/across Main Street.
Before the fair starts vendors will be able to drive up to their vendor spot for loading/unloading. We are currently looking into designated vendor parking.
Driving Directions:
The PM Press warehouse is just off a major highway (NY-17/I-86) and very close to the I-86/NY-17 and I-81 interchange. NYC, Philadelphia, and Buffalo are all about 3.5 hours away. Boston and Washington DC are about 4.5 hours. Cleveland is 5.5 hours driving time.
The warehouse is conveniently located off Main Street in Binghamton/Johnson City, situated next to the former Erie Line Railroad (later the Erie Lackawanna Line).
The facility is set back from Emma Street down a short driveway and has a large parking lot to host the day’s festivities.
Accessibility:
We have two bathrooms inside the warehouse with 29″ doorways. One of them is currently equipped with handrails.
There is wheelchair access to the warehouse through the loading dock via the ramp but the ramp is fairly steep. We will have volunteers available to assist.
Unless it rains, the plan is to have the majority of the vendors outside in the parking lot. There is a gradual incline up the driveway.
Food & Drink:
We will have plenty of free water on site.
We can’t promise to have any food available at this point, but there are options in the neighborhood:
Parlor City Vegan (81 Clinton St) will be open 12-8 on Saturday
There is a convenience store at 59 Glenwood Ave that’s a 5-10 minute walk from the warehouse.
Seating:
There will be a lot of folding chairs available, a few benches, and some nice grassy areas but we’d recommend bringing your own camping chairs if possible.
Pets:
Only service animals will be welcome inside the warehouse. Animals will be welcome in outdoor areas but we ask that you please be considerate of other attendees who may be allergic or phobic. There are also railroad tracks that run all day near the parking lot and three beehives behind the warehouse.
