Review on SOTUS

Okay so i know my reviews suck but bear with me im trying to make them longer. Sotus is a Thai bl and i watched it quite a while ago and even though it had the overdone plot of engineering students, it was different. I don't even know why it stood out so much, but i know part of it was the dynamic between Arthit and Kongpop, i loved how the younger one was more flirty while the older was more strict but winded down and got flustered around him.

It made it so much more real to me and didn't bore me like any other engineering-student thai drama. The pace was also perfect in my eyes. It started off slow but it didn't really drag on giving us our fluffy kristsingto scenes we needed. Although the waiting for the kiss was dreadful, i felt like it was worth it because that kiss is what made the show more special then others.

One of the first shows i watched and it never gets old. Just the perfect amount of fluff, angst and heartwarming moments with some sprinkles of flirting and good damn chemistry.

Well down GMMTV you won this one.

Arthit continues to speak absolute nonsense and I can't tell whether or not we're supposed to take it seriously as "wisdom"

"I think... you like me." Kongpop, light of my life, heart of my heart, I adore you. I can't believe he came out and said this already. This show is smashing together one of the most amazing characters of all time and one of the worst characters of all time. And honestly, Kongpop's amazingness is spilling over onto Arthrit a little bit and making him just a tad more appealing. If someone as forthright (to steal @bengiyo's word) and self-possessed as Kong sees something worthy in Arthit, it makes me believe that there is actually some there there, you know?

although again, is this genuine or weaponized flirting at this point? I'm not sure.

I'm keeping @clairificusrex's headcanon that Arthit is neurodivergent and ace in mind as I watch, and, as long as he isn't actively being a bully, it does help me see the character in a more nuanced light. I'll buy it.

my girls! I still love them even if they're talking about crushes on our main boys. idk, something about them feels much more complex and real to me as compared to the university girls in a lot of other Thai BLs I've seen. it could be something as superficial as their makeup and hairstyling, which feels more "casual college kid" as opposed to "tv star" to me.

and look! we have a reference to the inciting incident of My Love Mix Up!

Arthit free and vulnerable in his own room! It was a wise choice to put them in dorms opposite each other so that Kong (and us) and see Arthit in a new light and become endeared by him. And for some reason, Kong is totally endeared by this bully grumpy cat. Ok, I admit it, I too am a bit endeared by Arthit sleepily hanging his laundry up.

Aw, poor May, she's got a big ol' crush on the boy who's nursing a crush on the bully grumpy cat. I hope she gets a good story in these 15 episodes of show. I have faith though.

I'm kinda thrilled that Hew was chosen as class president instead of Kong. I do love a good subversion of tropes.

oh there are adults at this university after all. and they'll intervene in this one case of a medical emergency, and yet are prefectly fine with this overall culture of hazing. that's the part of this show that actually pisses me off to be honest.

but I guess we have to keep putting Arthit in situations and making him all sad and pathetic if this romance is going to have any chance to take off. or at least any chance to earn the viewers' support.

oooh. the infamous pink milk appears! i did not realize its first(?) BL appearance was in the service of a conversation about masculinity, effeminacy and queerness. fascinating.

Kongpop, just what exactly do you see in this bully? As soon as I start to think maybe I could ship these two together, Arthit does some more petty tyrant shit. I do however love how Kong keeps flummoxing Arthit with basic politeness and courtesy. I approve of flummoxed love interests.

Well. I plan on continuing the show, but I feel like three episodes is the maximum dose for binging at any one time. That was a very high rate of power trips per hour.

Creo que nunca encontrare las palabras para describir porque SOTUS ocupa un lugar muy especial en la lista de mis BL Favoritos. Aunque gran parte de la razón sea que fue el primer BL Tailandés que vi, es probablemente porque me enseño muchas cosas sobre la cultura tailandesa.  Aunque toda la vida me ha encantado aprender sobre las culturas asiáticas, SOTUS despertó un interés por conocer más sobre este país: su historia, su lengua, sus tradiciones y normas. SOTUS abrió un nuevo mundo para mi. 

SOTUS y SOTUS S no es solo sobre la historia de amor entre Arthit y Kongpop, es también sobre las relaciones con nuestros amigos, maestros, compañeros de trabajos, jefes, etc.  Y creo que eso le da un valor adicional sobre muchas otras historias, porque nos muestra un poquito más de realidad, en medio de la burbuja rosa de aceptación que otras series crean.

Es uno de los OG de GMMTV, así que no hay que esperar mucho en cuanto a besos o escenas de afecto entre los protagonistas,  pero creo que la química y complicidad de Singto y Kris trasciende a través de sus miradas y pequeños gestos.

Day 18: BL Drama That Was a Major Letdown

Sotus, especially Sotus 2. NOW BEFORE YOU COME FOR MY NECK. BEFORE YOU COME FOR MY THROAT... let me explain. When I started dipping my toes into Thai bl, all anyone talked about was Sotus Sotus Sotus. I was expecting something extraordinary, and it just... wasn't. Like the storyline was fine both times, and I had no real issues with the scripts that I can remember. But I just didn't believe that Arthit was really in love with Kongpop. Like there were cute moments where I could see the emotion, and I totally understand not being into PDA, but for there to be so much hesitation in physical affection when you've been with this person for years???? How is it realistic that someone would seem so uncomfortable being physically affectionate with their partner of several years?? It just felt so forced and like Krist was not into it at all. Like he was fine until they had to show physical affection. And for simple stuff like hugging and hand holding. For this drama to be talked about like it was the holy trail of Thai bls, I was just like why????

I also have this problem, on a much smaller scale, with Dark Blue Kiss. It's not realistic to me that a couple who has been together for 2-3+ years would have such a lack of physical affection. And not just kisses, but hugs, holding hands, leaning against each other, etc. At least with PeteKao there is the tension of Kao isn't out to his mom, and they aren't out to their friends yet. Plus, they are physically affectionate when they're on their ow, away from prying eyes. I also read Kao constantly pushing Pete away as more of a foreplay/teasing mechanism than a true sign of him not being into it.

I decided to watch the beginning of SOTUS based on @waitmyturtles' reactions as part of her Thai BL education, and the conversations that inspired. I'm definitely not watching the whole show! Probably not even the whole first episode, I'll only go as far as I can stand it for, but I was finding myself desperately curious for context.

Well, 25 seconds in and we're already off to a good start 🥴

Actually this credits montage is making the show seem kind of appealing. Perhaps I will surprise everyone and myself by being a SOTUS fan.

I don't know if it's just this opening sequence, but the colors are so de-saturated compared to more recent Thai shows. Kinda makes it look like 90s home video.

This name tag table makes me miss Fighter and Tutor. 😢

But also, pre-Covid they could get HUGE casts of extras. That room is full!

So far the show is successfully building drama and intrigue! I'm more hooked than I suspected.

Arthit makes an excellent insecure petty tyrant. Unfortunately I'm having trouble imagining how they're going to transition him to love interest.

Oddly enough the hazing stuff isn't bothering me (so far). I think because a) it's SO over the top ridiculous, and b) I came in expecting the worst. (But of course, it can always get worse.)

Maybe if I stop here I can pretend the show is a dystopian future romance (á la Divergent) about M and Kongpop falling in love as they rise up against their oppressive seniors. I'm kinda digging their chemistry.

However I'm predicting a het romance between M and the chicken dance girl (my beloved) [May] instead.

I can see from whence the Singto fandom. What a charming smile. He's already bringing a welcome groundedness to the role.

Seaweed snacks! Now I want some. Your advertising is working on me. Also, one thing I think SOTUS does well is camera angles and editing; they really build the drama.

Also the sound recording (and mixing) quality is not terrible. What happened after this? Was Covid to blame? (Or perhaps GMMTV has always been better at it.)

I don't think I'd be that into this if I was watching just for pleasure, but I'm actually quite enjoy the experience of watching it for historical curiosity.

I like this girls at the table too! The women in this show are much more solid than I was expecting, and actually seem like real people [gasp!]

Honestly I'm not even looking at Arthit or the subtitles, I'm just watching Off in the background.

God, Arthit is so annoyingly awful. The only way to get through this may be to ignore his existence as much as possible.

I don't know if it's because Off is the one actor I recognize, or if it's because he just has that much charisma, but my eye keeps getting drawn to him on screen. (Even if he is aiding and abetting the evil guy.) I love the way he keeps snatching things from Arthit's hands.

Like, I can see how this COULD work, if Arthit wasn't such a stupidly petty tyrant. Enemies to Lovers! It's aiming for what FighterTutor managed to do so well. But. Well. The bully character has to have some redeeming feature. (Although perhaps he will win me over in the end.) As for their chemistry, I haven't seen enough to venture a firm opinion yet, but it's certainly not jumping off the screen.

Oh great, now we have homophobic bullying 🥴 But Singto really is very good as Kong.

Are you all sure this show isn't really Kong/M? Because that's still the story I'm creating in my head.

Yes rebel Kongpop! I feel like my dystopian version of the story would be so much better than whatever we actually get.

However I do appreciate if it has to be bully romance that the target is not in the least a passive victim. (I ❤️ Kongpop)

This hazing is just so dumb. It's so silly it doesn't even bother me really, just makes me think about how young and dumb these engineering seniors are. Actually mostly it makes me mad at the school administration for sanctioning it.

And I love May and this wavy-haired girl! Interesting female characters in my BL?! Who have a life outside of "shipping" their classmates or having crushes on impossible gay boys?! My goodness!

Okaaaay. Still struggling to see how they can possibly build a romance out of this. Like, in Semantic Error and Why R U?, there was bullying yes, but even from the beginning there were hints of connection and attraction. And I am simply not seeing any of that here.

Well. I finished the whole first episode after all! And despite all expectations I'm kinda hooked.😲 I can see why SOTUS was so popular; the things it does well it does very well. And Singto is elevating it far beyond what it deserves.

It helps that bullying and hazing, while they annoy me, aren't a Yikes Nope 😬 I'm Outa Here for me the way rape is (which is why I couldn't make it past the first episode of TharnType). And cringy slapstick humor, while objectively less of a problem, for some reason make me even more uncomfortable (which is part of the reason I couldn't make it through 2gether). And it's not boring me, at least as long as the camera isn't on Arthit. (My problem with some other OG Thai BL that was so boring I can't even remember its name now. [edit: it was driving me crazy so i went through world-of-bl's list and finally figured it out... it was Nitiman. Maybe I'd find it more interesting if I tried again, but it just could not keep me engaged, sorry Nitiman lovers.]) And it's helps that my expectations were basement level. (Thank you @waitmyturtles for preparing me. And I'm sorry for your suffering in the process.)

So I will probably continue! Although I don't know how soon or how regularly, or if I will do such detailed reaction posts for the rest. The only reason I started this one is I didn't expect to last more than 10 minutes.

Man I just did a sotus the series rewatch and it just brought back how much I loved it. Like ughh arthit and kongpop were so precious but I also genuinely loved the rest of the characters.

Anyways does this mean I will now be watching sotus s the series followed by the our skyy episodes? Yes. Yes it does.
