About Chapter 43

So, this just a quick little comment I have about the “you kissed him, you didn’t even kiss me!” statement Fitz made. 

Fitz was so mature during this scene. He was completely under the assumption that Sophie still liked him romantically, and thought they were working to make the relationship work. Then, surprise! Sophie comes out and says she not only has feelings for Keefe, but kissed him and now has an arguably more defined relationship with Keefe than Fitz did for 3 books. (no sophie hate here, just Fitz’s perspective). Sophie herself still wasn’t even 100% sure she was completely over Fitz in this chapter, so her starting something with Keefe was NEWS for Fitz, to say the least.  

Personally, I would be flabbergasted. The situation is almost comical. It feels like Fitz got pranked. So when he went,

“I mean...you kissed him? You didn’t even kiss me!”

The notion that it could be perceived as immature went right over my head.

I actually laughed when I read him saying that because it’s true. It’s so realistic and on brand for Fitz’s character. It was kind of, to me, a funny way of writing Fitz reaction to the news. It felt light hearted and made the scene a little less grueling to get through. It just makes me chortle for no reason every time I think about it.

I don’t believe it was immature to say, either. I believe it was just a genuine reaction. Fitz is characterized as VERY blunt, to a fault, and speaks whatever is on his mind. So, this statement was probably just him trying to make sense of what was happening. I don’t think it was meant to be taken very seriously, or have actual meaning behind it.

Honestly, it was what I was thinking during the chapters following the kiss scene up until this point. Maybe that’s why I brushed over it. Could it be perceived as trying to guilt Sophie a little? Yeah. But what else was he supposed to say after Shannon described the hurt and devastation in his eyes? “That’s unfortunate, but I definitely don’t care about how quickly you moved on from me to Keefe”. NO. Fitz was so true and real for making that goofy little comment. 

Fitz is just so real. End of story. Stop bagging on his character.

(yes i did make sure that this could happen bc the first kotlc book came out in oct 2012, and the last percy jackson was may 2009)

I got into the fandom because I was recommended Keeper and I wanted to read it but I forgot about it and I was in a google chat for mental health and one day someone wrote a really good Sokeefe fic and it reminded me about Keeper so I googled who Sophie ended up with and it said Fitz, and I had been kind of upset because that fic was really good, but then I decided, "Screw it" and read the first book online on some website where I had to watch an ad after every like, two pages, and at the beginning few chapters I was a little upset and still thinking about that Sokeefe fic but Fitz somehow ended up with Sophie, but then as I read I decided that Fitz was relatable and smart and awkward but genuinely cared and that either way Sophie was getting a great guy and then in later chapters when we met Keefe, I went, "Hang on, he's doing what Amy did. Must be a found family arc in which she gains a sibling with parallels to the one she lost," because that was genius, which immediately made me team Sophitz for life, no regrets or looking back. Fun fact: I actually thought that Keefe would end up with Tam (I love me some Kam as well as Keefex). And the book was so great I finished it in two hours and downloaded the second one as a free PDF, and thus began my addiction to Keeper and Sophitz.

Ok but you know what would be extremely funny; somehow if Sophie ever did get her match lists and her number one match is none of her potential love interests.

Keefe? Nope. Fitz? Nope. Any of the girls? Biana? Linh? Nope. It's no one she remotely knows or recalls in passing.

Instead it's some random dude called Jared.

Once all this romance drama is over and Fitz is over everything—I want these two best friends being the most Cognates ever. Also imagine the silly havoc they can cause with telepathy once there’s no saving the world to worry about and they’re just teenagers?

Or even WHILE there’s still saving the world to worry about, and they go into situations like, “yeah, face this team. Face the most powerful pair of cognates you ever did see.” *TELEPATH POWER*

I feel like there’s always been that slight tension in their cognate relationship that they like each other and now she’s with Keefe and abfkfhsskdh just stuff but after being totally honest in stellarlune, even though their feelings were hurt, they were OVER 1000 on the cognate power reader thing. Now imagine they get over the hurt and they’ve still got that trust? Besties gonna wreck HAVOC. The neverseen and Gisela will never know what hit them. And then the world will be back to normal and Keefe, in need of silly pranks to put his world back at ease, will never know what hit him. Until they brag about it to him.

I want Fitz finding himself an awesome girlfriend who is not Sophie, and Sophie giving him relationship advice while he talks to Keefe and telepathically lets Sophie know what perfect presents he wants or dates they should go on.

I want these two kids to be overpowered as POSSIBLE in the face of everything and I want them to do it while being ALL THE WAY OVER THE DRAMA. No love triangle, just Sophie and Keefe being in love despite their trauma and issues and with their genetic experiment trauma bonding, and Sophie and Fitz being that pair of bestie telepaths you Do Not Want To Mess With.

"But We're Cognates"

Okay. I know.

I know. This line is so overused. So watered down. It's what anyone quotes when they want to mention that Fitz is possessive, or rude, or is kinda toxic for Sophie.

Well, the thing is. I say variants of this line in my head all the time. Sure, it's not "but we're cognates."

Instead, it's "but you were my friend first" or "but I want to spend time with just you" or "but I LIKE YOU MORE THAN THEY DO!"

And that's not healthy on my part, I'll readily admit it.

But I know where it comes from. After all, it's a life of building blocks that got me here.

If you have one friend. Maybe two. And that's all you have, you do not want to share. You do not want them to get attached to others. You do not want them to drift away from you, because, inside, you're terrified of losing them.

Because that one friend, right there, they're all you've got. They're everything. You can't lose them. How are you going to function without them?

Fitz's "but we're cognates" line isn't about him trying to control Sophie, or trying to isolate her intentionally, or him trying to be rude or annoying or make Keefe jealous.

All it is is a kid who has one friend left desperately trying to keep that friend, for as long as he can.

Fitz has one friend, when he starts saying this line.

And that friend is Sophie.

He's afraid that if he doesn't hold on tight, doesn't try to insert himself into her life, he'll lose the only friend he's definitely still got.

And just.
