READING PRACTICE

What does research mean to you?

Research for me is anything which feeds my inspiration. Sources which expand my understanding of worlds, the universe, and the human condition.

What things do you do when you research?

I read on the Underground. Underline sentences which jump out to me. I used to try to read from cover to cover but now I look at the contents. Start with the chapter with a title which I think resonates with me. I am now more in dialogue with what I read.

For all the Steven Universe panties in a bunch just enjoy the good theories. (it’s all a matter of opinion but have a bit of sense too) Don’t you like the idea you can watch the whole thing again in a new light and look for all the foreshadowing? Aren’t you having some greats discussions? Is it making you feel emotions? Is it make you feel alive?

Do you suddenly have the desire to get argument lessons and learn how to constructively debate someone so all parties come away with a respect for each other?

Once you knew the twist to The Sixth Sense did you watch again looking for the signs? What about Fight Club?

Watch Stanley Kuberick’s The Shining. Watch again being mindful of the any of the following sensible theories that have on screen “proof” and the healthy discussion of can make the movie more interesting-

The subjugation of Native Americans, White Man’s Burden and related themes

The Magic Negro trope

When Jack talks to the ghosts he is facing reflective surfaces

Which events in the hotel are “real” and which might be scenarios Jack is writing in his book

Repetitive themes, colors, staging of actors, set pieces and angles

Who is or isn’t a reliable narrator

There are no ghosts, for example Danny lets Jack out of the freezer, but why?

Generational physical and/or sexual abuse

Just keep track of what colors and patterns characters wear on their clothes. Try to figure out the layout of the hotel. Make a list of everything in The Shining that doesn’t make any goddamn sense to you. Wait, can that window be there? Is that door open? If the Grady girls are supposed to be a couple of years apart why are they shown as twins? 

Watch Jaws. Watch again with the idea the tiger shark that was caught towards the middle was the actual culprit, they’re the ocean’s garbage can and will eat just about anything. There was no giant great white, the protagonists are alcoholics and created the story of the ending to cover up what happened to the boat. There’s a hell of a lot of alcohol going on in that movie. 

It’s entirely possible My Best Friend is a Vampire and House MD exist in the same universe. Or not. What could make me say that?

I’m glad I could find Michael Sheen’s bits from Passengers, or at least most of them, on Youtube. And if you haven’t seen Stanley Kuberick’s The Shining with Lloyd y’all should.

I have no interest in ever seeing a whole movie about a man, or anyone, who feels entitled to wake up a woman, or anyone else, and make them give up their plans for their life just to have a companion/love interest. Not romantic, icky and rapey.

Somewhere between an emotionally abusive upbringing with bi polar parenting, a life time of anxiety, a brain injury, and executive disfunction there is no part of me that believes I did any part of my real life thing right yesterday and I can only look at the prospect of having lost my only income until I see it in my bank account next pay day. 

It will probably be fine. If nothing else the job I had that nearly stressed me to death, and being so poor I didn’t even have dirt, taught me how to fill in forms and at least look like I know what I’m doing as I fake my way through an interview or review. 

And though I know I have a brain injury, and just had a CT scan but haven’t had the results, I have to assume I don’t have a tumor or something because hopefully the tech would have told me if there’s something like a gem cluster in there. 

Throw in a sudden influx of other doctors and tests I should have been having for years, yeah, my last two doctors have obviously sucked ass, all the usual real life shit I have to deal with like the Life Ruiner and our indulging Smother who still doesn’t believe I can make phone calls correctly...

What is that pre Boris Cure song that goes ‘ba da ba da ba da bum’? What isn’t the early Cure song that goes like that?

Alright, slept on the whole Single Pale Rose, watched some commentaries, slept on that. Saw the ‘series ruining leaks’ and as a writer I just say “so” and decide I still want to know how they get there. 

I mean you go in to Stanley Kuberick’s The Shining knowing that Jack is going to go crazy and kill his family but you still watch so you can see how they get there. And then many people watch it again and again and again.

Just hang on and suffer well.

Pink/Rose shows us what happens when you run away from your problems but Steven faces and deals with his. 

Her hair is big because it’s full of secrets. 

And there could still be a Paragon out there. According to Pearl’s tits there’s at least 3-4 more levels of Diamond Authority to get through. 

So just hang on and suffer well.

I remember I got to suffer a mid season plot twist not seeing a character and knowing their fate in to somme fun trips to Imagination Land and fan fiction.
