In a recent interview with L’Equipe, former top 20 player Fabrice Santoro openly acknowledges that Rafa’s comeback has evoked a range of emotions.
Here’s what the Frenchman exactly said.
“It’s not…
Idk if you’ve read the interview that Vasseur gave to L’Equipe, but it’s very complimentary towards Lewis and about what he can do for the team in terms of mentality and motivation going forward (i guess in terms of leadership?). Anyway, Charles fans seem to be quite upset about that and lamenting that it’s Charles who “built the team” and it’s thanks to him if it’s on a upwards trajectory. Now, I’m fine if you want to give him credit for sticking with the team even when it didn’t look like the most promising choice, but I’ve noticed that very rarely I’ve seen these claims be made towards Lewis. He’s been in merc for 11 years now and there are many people who still think Schumacher had a greater impact than he ever did and basically built the team. And personally (but I admit I only recently started to pay attention to these things), I’ve never heard Toto straight up say the stuff that Fred said about Lewis. I hope I’m wrong and would love if you corrected me on this btw. But in your opinion how instrumental is a driver when building a successful team? And do you think Lewis was that for Mercedes?
I never saw anyone say Schumacher had more impact on Merc than Lewis tbh (which doesn't mean it hasn't been said, just I haven't seen it so I doubt it's a very popular opinion). Toto has praised Lewis for his leadership and other qualities hundreds of times over the years (here's a recent example, here's another one, and another one). I think team - drivers pairings are partnerships and so the relationship to the team is important but other drivers have been successful without being as hands on as Lewis tends to be (I'm thinking of Raikkonen for example). Lewis hasn't always been a leader and definitely not as much of a team player as he's been these last few years – nor that involved in Mercedes. That's something that's come with time and maturity. I also think he's a control freak who wants to stick his nose in every part of the process and sometimes it's a good thing and probably sometimes not.
