something i’ve been thinking about a little (and i realize i’m probably the exception rather than the rule in this regard) is why it’s so much easier for me to sit down and watch a movie as opposed to a streaming series these days. and aside from the obvious fact that a movie is usually shorter, i think it’s also bc a movie is required to have a certain economy of storytelling that most streaming series do not. and one thing that many writers and artists will tell you is that oftentimes, having come kind of constraint, be it time, resources, money etc. can actually yield the strongest and most creative results. a typical streaming series these days is often like 6 hour-long episodes where nothing really has to happen bc the story has like endless amounts of time to unravel. i don’t think this is necessarily a good thing.
like, for example, last night, i was watching the french film la piscine (1969) and honestly, it was so tightly written that i thought it could have been a stage play. there are like 6+ speaking characters, only 4 of whom we actually spend significant time with, and like 90% of the movie takes place in and around one house. the whole story happens over less than a week and almost every plot beat that moves the story forward, up to the climactic moment, is based on suggestion and inference, while at the same time, there’s this really slow, lazy, languorous vibe, which is really in keeping with the themes of the film. and it was riveting.
i’m not saying everything has to be like this obviously lol but i do wish people would come back a little to the “less is more” approach to storytelling.

La PISCINE (1969) - JANE BIRKIN: A VISUAL HOMMAGE (Part 1/10)
JANE BIRKIN left us very recently and we lost a true icon, a word overused but in this case so fit for the multi talented actress (94 movies), singer (13 studio albums and 6 live albums), activist, fashion icon and mother of three talented daughters (actresses and photographer) she had with 3 different husbands (John Barry, Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Doillon)
Born in an English upper class family and a staple of Mod-ear London, having appeared in the Knack and Blow-Up, Jane Birkin got her breakthrough in the year 1969 when she was cast in one of the most erotic and beautifully filmed movies, La piscine along Alain Delon and Romy Schneider.
Following this movie, she filmed two more movies in France in 1969, a country she decided to live in from 1970 as she was abandoned (with her daughter Kate) by John Barry
The passionate love relationship she found when she met Serge Gainsbourg is stuff of legends and they were inseparable both as artists (composer/singer - Director/actor) and husband/wife till the mid 80's when they divorced
But Jane was more than Gainsbourg's "thing" as she carved her own successful career in France and in the UK and other countries (Japan, Italy..) where she was revered too
This 10 Part Blog is a short and humble visual tribute to the beauty and talent of Lady Jane
