Too often, people believe homelessness is due to some type of character flaw. In reality, that’s not even close. The top causes being…

1. A lack of affordable housing

2. Unemployment

3. Poverty

4. Low wages

irt poverty/homelessness + alcohol use (esp with @butchfeygela‘s tags on my post)- people really underestimate the function that substance use/alcohol use can have for someone who is unhoused. being unhoused is boring, cold, painful, + lonely. substances can allow the 8 hours panhandling to get the $45 you need for a motel to fly by. alcohol reduces your perception of the cold + can knock you out whben you can’t sleep. substances can help you cope with the physical deterioration from malnutrition, constant stress, + sleeping outside. substances can provide social connection with others who you would otherwise not enjoy or help you cope with being alone.

not only that but- many unhoused people are stuck in a seemingly inescapable position. the pathway to financial stability or even housing is difficult or even impossible. in the wake of that hopelessness, the downsides of substance use start to seem insignificant. arrest? you’re getting arrested anyway for sleeping outside, peeing outside, standing in the wrong place, etc. physical danger? you’re already beat the fuck up, anyway, right? loss of relationships? you’ve lost most people already. inability to keep a job? nobody will hire you + you can’t stay employed, anyway, because you have no car + no shower.

perhaps for you or me, the cons of heroin use or binge drinking nightly greatly outweigh the pros. that isn’t the case for everyone. if we are really serious about ending overdose/addiction, we need to start looking at giving people lives worth recovering into instead of shaming them for their own hopelessness.

aside from your name/alias, your pronouns, and your age... you don't need to document every fundamental detail about yourself on your blog. you don't need to spill every secret or document every minor detail about your life, your health, or your situation. if something is crucial to your portrayal, or you feel something needs to be established for the sake of your comfort/safety... that's different. otherwise... stop oversharing. don't give out your real name, last name, location, or your job. there are people out there with bad intentions and you are making it so much easier for them to cause problems. protect yourself. i don't care if 'stranger danger' sounds juvenile to you now - it's still a thing, and some people in the rpc are far too comfortable dispensing information about themselves to people they don't know.

HAHAHA part of vikjayce's built-in charm to me is that their position in society is that of the working man under the gears of capitalism and rapidly advancing industry. They are *employees*, doesn't matter how brilliant or how groundbreaking their work is, the results will always be co-opted by those with the most money and power in the society they inhabit. The average man can't win capitalism by "pulling themself up by their bootstraps," -- when they try to, the result will often be them being swiftly outplayed and a quick economic demise.

Investors are landlords of ideas. Ask anyone trying to break into industry how they feel about that relationship and you're going to end up collecting a whole album's worth of doompilled stories, worst case scenario always being The Money Guys Get All Your Work (Including Credits For Work They Didn't Do!) my fucking job… i logged off for lunch, but kept hearing notifications throughout the whole hour. if other people wanna work through lunch i’m not gonna care, but i refuse to login and check what’s happening until past 1:00, okay?

lunch ends, i get on and scroll thru the messages and it’s my coworker trying to figure out how to run something. he’s all “does it look like this for you guys?” and “oh i think you have to do [thing] for it to work”. the thing is, i figured out how to run this thing w somebody else weeks ago and wrote up documentation for it. it’s literally all in the readme on the gitlab repo.

there is such little documentation for things at my job, that people just assume nothing exists and never look for it - even in the single most obvious spot. so he for real spent lunch trying to figure something out, just for me to get online and say “oh yeah i wrote a readme that has instructions for running this thing lol”
