Too often, people believe homelessness is due to some type of character flaw. In reality, that’s not even close. The top causes being…
1. A lack of affordable housing
2. Unemployment
3. Poverty
4. Low wages

Wausau could transfer homeless day center funding to Catholic Charities
The Wausau Finance Committee on Tuesday approved transferring $51,129 in unspent to Catholic Charities to operate a day center year round.
Damakant Jayshi City officials are one step closer to funding a year-round day center for Wausau’s homeless population, months after services ended at a downtown nonprofit. The Wausau Finance Committee on Tuesday approved transferring $51,129 in unspent to Catholic Charities to operate a day center year round. The money, part of American Rescue Plan Act funding, had already been allocated to…

i hate the term unhoused. it just seems like a way for middle class liberals to sanitize the situation or distance themself from the 'gross poor folk'. like they think unhoused sounds a lot cleaner than homeless...

for my LA friends who are registered to vote— this mayoral election is gonna be a big fucking deal. it’s the first time ballots are going to be mailed to every eligible voter, and on top of that, if a candidate gets more than 50%+ of the vote in June’s primary, they win outright, no general election.
on top of this, the frontrunner for the Republican Party, Caruso, is a Trump-esque billionaire who is anti-abortion, and has spent millions upon millions of dollars more on campaign ads in comparison to any other candidate regardless of party, meaning a lot of uneducated/not politically involved voters may have only heard about him when the ballot arrives in the mail— which makes his strategy to avoid the general election altogether that much more obvious. his platform is outright against abortion, and actively criminalizes unhoused people even moreso.
i’m not going to tell you who to vote for, but ultimately ANY vote towards ANY candidate in the race besides Caruso will take away from his ability to gain the 50% he’d need to win outright. obviously, voting is not the end-all be-all, but if you’re registered and getting a ballot anyway, you might as well help keep a racist, rich, anti-homeless, anti-abortion asshat from buying L.A.’s mayoral office in the primary like he plans to.
here is the link to register to vote online

The things is that: I grieved my father all alone, and I grieved my grandma all alone, and I spent all of the (on going) pandemic alone. Last night when I found out I wouldn’t get power for 2 or 3 more days, and my phone had died, and I hadn’t had a hot shower for days, or hot food, and I was truly all alone, couldn’t message anyone, if there was an emergency I had no way to contacting anyone.
I felt maybe the most alone I’ve ever felt. It was a scary feeling and I cried for a very long time. I also got my second booster today and may experience a small flu. If I had to do that with no power and no hot water, I would have had a very very difficult time. Life is very isolating sometimes.
All of this to say, I’m back in a hotel because I was truly on the verge of a breakdown that seemingly came out of nowhere.

just saw someone on the forums try to make the argument that suicide awareness & prevention advertisements are not appropriate for the site, i can only assume because they are not "child-friendly"?
i hope this isn't something FR has promised to report to hiveworks in the past? i don't know how to tell people this but children also struggle with suicidality? you know the point of suicide awareness & prevention, hotlines for such, etc. is to reach people who may be struggling with it, and that saying "no suicide is bad it doesn't belong here" is actively preventing it from reaching who it needs to?
and i don't want to hear a single person say "it's a triggering topic." yes and what do we do in the face of triggering topics? we ask people to put a warning at the top so we can avoid as best we can. we don't ask people everywhere to stop talking about suicide ever, because not talking about it is a huge part of the problem (though not the entire problem). an ad that says "having thoughts of suicide? crisis support is available 24/7" is not doing anything more than a warning for a discussion of suicide would. if you are triggered by simply seeing the word "suicide" in a suicide prevention ad in the sidebar, i'm sorry, i do empathize, that really sucks. i've been there! the solution is not to ban all suicide prevention campaigns. refresh the page or close the tab to get away from the triggering word, and take the steps necessary for you to manage your own health crisis, which only you know how to do best - don't deny organizations the tools necessary to do their outreach to help other people manage theirs.
if anything the only argument to be had here is that this is an ad for the veteran's crisis line, and children certainly don't tend to be veterans, but i don't think something being for veterans inherently makes it anti-child-friendly so long as it's not, you know, a pro-military ad. i'm as anti-military as they come and part of being anti-military is recognizing that much of the disabled & unhoused population in the US is made of up veterans who don't get the support they need because no one fucking does unless you can buy it. and that some of those veterans, and their kids, inhabit places on the internet! wild!
anyway veteran stuff aside, because the person in question didn't even mention it ("i got a suicide ad") and ultimately who cares when it's phrased like that, suicide prevention is needed for all ages. we talk about it in public schools, ideally in homes and among close friends (though often not, which is why further prevention, awareness, and intervention is needed), and i can't say the same now because i don't watch television now but at least when i was a teen in FR's demographic, mental health & suicide was even talked about in ad breaks & campaigns on television. some of those are responsible for keeping people i know alive today.
so i'm going to log off now because i've made myself emotional and i recognize that, but genuinely what the fuck.

As a white homeless person I gotta say white homeless people are so fucking entitled and evil. We aren't used to being treated as anything "less than", and then we are suddenly visibly homeless and fall into a class of people that are "less than".
Instead of seeing that, wow, being treated like shit due to complicated circumstances that are beyond my control is really messed up and that shouldn't be ANYONE'S experience, because being homeless is hard enough - instead it's "wtf why am I being treated like a homeless😡 I used to BE somebody you know😡" like how embarrassing. You are truly a nobody if you think like that fr.

when I drew this comic 3 years ago I had NO idea how far it would reach. I'm happy to finally share a corrected version with proper abbreviations, and even MORE state names of indigenous origin ♥️
however, the goal of this comic was to inspire people to do your OWN research on indigenous history. To question everything we have been taught, and everything that has been pointedly left out. This erasure, this “forgetting”, of history is not just of the past… it is happening now. - Across so-called Canada, the US, and US-occupied islands, native women are victims of murder at 10-12x the rate of non-native people, and are the most likely to go missing without being searched for by the law. - Native reservations have the highest rates of poverty in the US, with over HALF of tribal homes with no access to clean water (with more joining this list by the year) - Native people are 6-10x more likely to be unhoused than the rest of the population, and native teens suffer suicide rates higher than any other demographic. This list of modern day genocide goes on (thank you for compiling @theindigenousanarchist <3) and yet take a look at those environmental stats!
Native people manage to do SO much for the planet as a whole - thanklessly - and with all this stacked against them. Don't even get me started on kin fighting in south america. Could you imagine if there was help? #landback is resistance to genocide, and it is the key to saving our warming earth.
So look into it and the other hashtags, cuz a cartoon goose ain't a substitute for a proper education. Love to my grandparents who always kept a map of tribal territories of turtle island on their wall, to speaking on our Tsalagi & Saponi heritage. Love & solidarity forever, happy research, and happy #indigenouspeoplesday

(Also, if you care to support the artist, I'm publishing a book ! and writing another - a fantastical afroindigenous graphic novel - that I post exclusively about with tons of other art on my patreon.)

Lame duck Wausau City Council approves hiring police officers for homeless issues
Despite past assurances from Barnes and some alders, the main focus of the new officers will be enforcing laws and ordinances with respect to homeless residents in the downtown area. Police say criminal and lewd behavior has increased downtown, alarming b
Damakant Jayshi After a heated discussion Tuesday the lame duck Wausau City Council ultimately approved hiring two new officers to tackle issues with homeless residents, with one change. Funding for the first six months, just under $118K, will come through reserve funding and not through American Rescue Plan Act dollars. Police Chief Matt Barnes had proposed using ARPA funding for the first…

Some of my opinions, in no particular order
golf courses should be abolished. mini golf can stay. actual golf? no. golf courses take up so much water to maintain their grass, grass which, btw, is a monoculture and bad for wildlife. the area that golf courses take up could be used for affordable housing, or natural areas left to grow with wild native plants that are better for the insect populations. but nooo, we gotta use all this land so that stuck up rich people can play the most boring game ever invented. bullshit.
the police should be abolished. i would settle for defunding but really they just need to go.
children are people, treat them as such. kids have thoughts and feelings that are just as real and valid as yours.
on a similar vein, you are allowed to not want children, but that doesn't give you a free pass to hate kids or be mean to kids. they didnt ask to be here, be kind.
there should be a maximum wage. after a certain point, there is no amount of labour you could possibly do to Earn that much money. your workers earned that money, and you are stealing it from them.
there is a difference between millionaires and billionaires. when i say eat the rich im not talking about actors and musicians, im talking about people who are directly responsible for poverty, hunger, suffering, and homelessness around the world. people who hoard obscene amounts of wealth that No One could ever hope to spend in an entire lifetime and simply watch while minimum wage workers struggle to put food on the table and the elderly freeze in their homes.
sex ed should start in primary school, at an age-appropriate level. if kids are old enough to ask questions about sex, they are old enough to learn about it in a safe environment. they should be taught correct anatomical names for body parts (penis, vulva, vagina, etc.).
there should be more research into autism and ADHD in adults, this shit doesn't just go away when you grow up.
diagnostic criteria for disabilities, disorders, and mental health conditions should be written by people who have or have had these conditions. how is someone supposed to know if they have autism, for example, if the symptoms are written from the perspective of someone who has never experienced it?? doesn't make any fucking sense.
hostile architecture should be illegal. unhoused people deserve a place to sleep. or better yet, give them houses. there are literal studies done that prove that housing people saves the government money in the long run, so why aren't we doing that? make it make sense
edit: updated to add more clarity to the golf thing. didn't explain that one well enough and left some people confused
