long post about me talking about a video game yipeee
crush and stuff under cut and me rambling about the game still lmao
Okay well- hm, the game really didn't tell me too much more. There is a bunch of information that it lacks and the story while interesting/intriguing didn't really do it for me? <- at least the ending didn't
The ending was a little lackluster to say the least. You can definitely tell it's an indie game that was poorly translated in some parts as there are parts that text was just copied and pasted from moments before.
There isn't a lot of character development either... They randomly threw characters together as "couples" at the end but showed no chemistry between them beforehand. I mean there is a detective character and then there is a woman who seems like the typical sex worker type and at the end, they're just... together? In the story, they interacted maybe twice and only ever talked about the case.
Games fun, the artstyle is awesome, the music is also really nice but unfortuantely the story falls flat! I'm hoping their next installment will be a little better storywise.. The game was so short.. I started it two days ago (I could probably beat it in one sitting through as it seems like it's roughly three hours long)
The game is called Almost My Floor.
ANY ANYWAYS I am crushing on the "protagonist", his name is Alex. Since the devs did such a poor job at giving the characters lots of personality/development I guess he belongs to me now! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tumblr media
Hell, they ALL belong to me now! I will give you personalities and development! Seems like other characters only existed to push the story which is unfortunate and it's only hinted at why the antagonist did what he did but didn't dive further into his side of things which would have been so interesting to see!
This game was made by a husband and wife and that's pretty much the entire dev team but you could really tell they struggled with making the male characters look different. They all really did look similar to one another, which I totally thought it was going to play into some time travel shenanigans but it doesn't, they're legit all different characters.
Alex himself remarks that he, Adam (the detective), and Kate's father all look alike but then after that remark it's never mentioned again and I feel like it would have been cool to explore that but I think it was just the creators poking fun at themselves for their lack of male character designs I guess?
I'm left with questions and wanting to know more but unfortunately this game is the only source of information as there is no wiki to go to, there's zero posts on this hellsite. It truly is a little indie game with no exposure. I am happy I played it though! I got two new f/o outta it! hehe
Also I'm crushing on Kate- Do I even need to explain why!? she's a vibe and my type!
Tumblr media
If you read all this I applaud you lol

Netflix's ATLA initial thoughts, ep 3: Omashu
Not Azula tricking these poor people! But I love seeing Fire Nation citizens that are sympathetic this early in the show.
I've decided I don't like that Ozai can just will fire under people's bodies and burn them alive. It really messes with the magic system, and for what? Aesthetic?
Katara's flashbacks are interesting. I liked seeing Aang try to help her with waterbending without it turning into a fight though I'm wondering when we'll see Aang waterbend. The chemistry between the kids isn't there and I don't know if it's the acting or the dialogue.
The Zhao change is fun and makes total sense. Iroh is growing on me; he and Zuko are the best part of the show so far.
Omashu looks amazing! They combined Omashu and The Southern Air Temple... WAIT. DANNY PUDI?!!!?!
Azula's crew is here too! Tai Li and Mei look and sound great.
I feel like they didn't reveal Jet's name until after they revealed his fit so we could be like ooh ahh but it doesn't make sense storywise. I don't wanna nitpick in these posts, though. It just stuck out like a sore thumb. The Freedom Fighters look great!
The mechanist and Sokka are nice together. Changing the Freedom Fighters' location works for me. And Aang's friendship with Teo is sweet. I was feeling like Sokka was getting more interesting storylines than anyone else in the gAang so seeing them be apart from each other and have their own experiences is interesting.
Oh my god, it's the guy that voices the cabbage merchant. THAT'S why they stopped him from saying it until the very end! Okay. That one paid off.
I don't think Iroh needed to sacrifice himself there. Zuko being alone at this point in his story is really bad for him. Also, part of what makes bratty Zuko good early on is that Iroh keeps him in check and guides him. I don't like this. Maybe he'll escape fast.
The most dense episode yet, combining 3-4 major storylines. The combination worked fine but some of the details of the episode were lackluster.
I'm having fun so far.

Sorry about the random meme, I just am so glad to find a fellow halo fan x3
But yeah I agreed with a lot of what you said... Honestly, I'm not even really that upset with Halo 4 that much... I more so just hate how they essentially ruined the enemy design, specifically I have a hatred of how they ruined my favorite enemiesm, the Grunts.
And of the original trilogy, Halo 3 is a bit lackluster. Especially storywise imo. I won't spoil anything though. But once you play it for yourself I'm sure you could maybe tell somethings kinda... Off, since 2.
My personal favorite entry in the whole series, is Halo 3: ODST. Its so god damn fun imo. I won't say a WORD about that though until/unless you play it.
Also how are you playing the games? Is it through the Master Chief Collection?
I just started playing the games and I’m already insane. It’s a lot of fun being able to yap about it as I go through them! Can’t thank you enough for giving me the opportunity :3c
TRUE. I get why 343 wanted to make an impression with new designs. But they all look so bad. I hate the hunched look they gave to the elites. And they did the grunts so dirty! It’s easy to drop the ball on ‘riding gamer nostalgia while changing things’. But they just threw the ball off the cliff.
I’m so excited to get to ODST because I keep seeing people talk about how good of a game it is. YouTube keeps recommending entire video essays on why it’s the best halo game, but I’m holding off until I actually play it. The constant rotation of playing one game-> having to finish that game before moving to the next one-> hearing about how good the next game is- is gonna kill me. ugh.
And I’m playing through MCC, yeah! The whole collection was only 10 bucks over the summer sale so I finally caved and got it :> I’m not sure I’m gonna be able to run 4 bc I’m just playing on a laptop, but if not then oh well.

being a hater rn but woww utena? of all things to compare yourself to…the romances in lgts were not super interesting i liked them conceptually but it’s hard to expand upon them in only a week. to compare it to utena is crazy
Tumblr media
my disclaimer is that i think lgts is a decent game with beautiful art and fun mechanics but the writing was so lackluster and leaves nothing super memorable storywise. idk astralshift overhyped it…

theres a few discussions going on on twitter about act 3 in dq11 and tbh i'm pretty neutral about it. i do firmly believe that act 3 went back and disregarded everyones character development from act 2 -- frequently people say they "didnt undo their character development" since "the original timeline still exists" and while that is true that, unfortunately, does not change the fact that the characters we see do not have said important character development anymore -- however i dont think that as a whole the time travel segment was a bad idea. instead, i think it was just poorly done. it was very clearly treated as a post game segment rather than a part of the main story, and you can tell with the way that story cutscenes, dialogue, and big plot points feel more like side quests and lack any actual importance. the scene where the party said a final goodbye to eleven, and then the scene further towards the end where eleven gives serenica the chance to go back in time, are truly wonderful and i feel like they represent the emotional core of the game really well. it's really just that they took the lazy route and failed to make act 3 as important or as large - storywise, that is - as the rest of the game that makes it feel lackluster. which i think is really unfortunate, as the rest of the game is beautiful. and act 3 could have been, too.

happy storyteller saturday, Lee! if you're to re-write any finish story from scratch, what you'd pick? sending good ~~ vibes ~~ and good luck your way. :3 - ✨ (@enchanted-lightning-aes)
[P.S: sorry if I barged in your inbox. if this bothers ya, lemme know and i won't do it again.^^]
Hello!!! Happy STS :D no need to apologize at all you're very welcome to ask/chat anytime
This was a fun question I started out like "hmmm I don't think I really have any" and then the more I thought about it the more I was like "wait. I have several stories I want rewriting."
The first one that came to mind a manga I read a while ago called "M/agical Girl Site" which was a fairly popular series about very modern magical girls fighting each other while a mysterious clock ticks down to an unknown fate. The premise seemed so cool, since I love magical girls and urban fantasy so much, and it combined the two ideas! But I found the execution to be lackluster :P it felt like a lot less "here's an interesting idea and the consequences with it" and more "here is an excuse to fictionally torture tween girls". Plus the sexualizing of the girls, poor handling of serious subject matter, homophobia passed off as jokes...I don't know if I even got halfway through before dropping it haha I know a lot of people love it as is but if I could take that premise and run I would definitely do that
More traditional storywise, I think I would rewrite the book The Ti/me Traveler's Wife, a romance between a woman and a man who spontaneously travels through time, with them meeting at different ages. When I was younger (middle school? Early high school?) I loved the book a lot, but when I got older I kind of went "...is this considered grooming? did he groom her?" A lot of the scenes that happened when the woman was young (like 6-17?) and when the man was older (like. 40s) and that's when she fell in love with him..........I don't know it feels weirder to me every time I think about it LOL I really loved the time travel parts of it though so I would love to rework something out of that!

"the many IDW stories that rely on pretty art to carry subpar stories exist" what do you mean by that? i get what you mean by the tv shows or movies that look nice but are shallow storywise, but i never got the idea that the comics focused on only their visuals and not the stories, given the vast emphasis they gave political stories in the backend of idw1 and idw2's long soliloquies covering up the pages
early IDW1 has multiple comics where the art is nice but the actual stories themselves are lackluster, in my opinion. infiltration, stormbringer, escalation, devastation and etc. i think have great art, but how many people do you know have actually read, nonetheless remember the stories? (doesn't mean the stories are bad, but when compared to later IDW, they're not as cohesive)
if i were to be more divisive with my opinions, i think some of the... not bad as in quality, but more "why is this here" story elements are forgiven because of the art. grindcore does not need to exist, nor do i think it should, yet it's kind of... ignored? forgiven? forgotten? not really talked about. i don't know if the art has a factor in it, but it feels like some of the more "?" moments in IDW are just brushed off. probably not solely the art but i think it factors.
and my criticism of windblade's series is well known at this point, but man. it's carried by saren stone's gorgeous art. stone please illustrate for windblade more please please please.

okay so, youv made a lot of castlevania art and stuff - all of which is great. i havent yet seen the show, but i heard people disliked the 3rd Season. is the 4th season good? should I actually watch the show, or just remain vibing in the little bits of fandom i see? given how cool u are, i figured u'd be the best source to ask. <3
YEAH THE THIRD SEASON WAS………….. 😬😬 not good, lots of uneeded racism n other potentially triggering stuff, and the story aspect was sort of lackluster cause this is where it branches from the games completely, plus the end of season 3 was kinda pointless?? they didn’t really, accomplish much? they were just sad. season 4 was better but s3 left a bitter taste in my mouth, the story was still lacking in comparison to 1&2 but nothing like 3, i did really like the ending tho!! at the end tho the only person storywise i was really watching for was isaac
but yeah imo when they branched from the games completely is where it went down hill, i won’t speak too much on the difference between game and show isaac cause i love show isaac so much but he’s basically a completely different person so i won’t touch that. on the other hand they did hector so dirty it’s not even funny, completely threw his character out the window (in the games curse of darkness is 3 years after castlevania three which is what the first two seasons is based around and in that game hector is the protag) but yeah he kind of became useless in the show :/ and what really makes me mad is how they made him brown in the show and he’s super cute but they then made him useless ans a target of a majority of the racism i mentioned earlier so yeah
if it ended at season 2 which it could have i would totally say watch but after season three i just :/
so watch it if u wanna but, like, don’t be suprised if u get disappointed lol😭😭

Endwalker finished - thoughts
Tumblr media
Personal release ranking:
1. Shadowbringers
2. Heavensward
3. Stormblood
4. Endwalker
5. ARR
6. 1.0
I will preface my opinions by saying that I completely and fully understand the extent of challenges they were dealing with in development, due largely to development happening remotely as a result of the pandemic.  But there are some things they still could have improved upon.
Thoughts/spoilers behind the cut below.
I honestly don’t know how to feel about this one.  After seeing so many people rave about Endwalker, about how “good” it is, and about the feels it invokes, my expectations were pretty high.  Suffice it to say, my experience wasn’t the same in that... I feel like it was lackluster.  It didn’t feel all that impactful to me, and there were definitely things they could have done better, or done with less of. Truth be told, I felt like the end of 1.0 going into ARR really drove home the feeling of dire stakes.  The realm was in imminent danger, and they brought you into the thick of it by showing it happening in real time.  It was interactive beyond one or two dungeons and a slow spread.  You could see it coming. And when it happened, it happened everywhere over Eorzea, in the open and in the cities, it was constant. That, to me, felt more like an “end of the world” scenario than what we just experienced. The only place in EW where I came anywhere close to this feeling was Vanaspati. The skies raining fire is not a new thing in XIV, they’ve been using it since 1.0, and to my brain that felt like an overused flex.  The slow spread of the Final Days “off camera” really made it feel a lot less urgent.  If its affects had started sooner in the course of the MSQ and actually -spread- to more areas as you progressed, especially to the main cities, or had streams of Blasphemies showing up in affected areas, I might have felt differently about it. The last region and leg of the storyline didn’t invoke any feels for me.  Knowing you could undo what was being done to your comrades really took away from how impactful that could have been.  It felt like there were no stakes. “This is fine”. Endwalker could have benefited more from a named NPC or two dying to really drive things home.  Ahewann barely got there, but he was a minor character. Is it fair to say my experience in 1.0 might have colored my reaction to EW?  Yes, it’s entirely possible.  On one hand, I feel like nothing will ever top that moment.  On the other hand, a part of me is glad that this didn’t cheapen that moment as I feared it would. “Oh, you thought Bahamut breaking free was bad? Hold my beer.” It is, however, 100% a FInal Fantasy game and, as some have said, the most Final Fantasy game that ever Final Fantasy’d storywise.  I just wish I could have felt the feels that everyone else felt in the course of playing it. Among the worst parts of EW, imo, were technical decisions.  It really felt like some of the indoor lighting in the new areas was a broad step -backwards- compared to the improvements they made over the course of HW, SB, and ShB. It’s little better in these new areas than it was in early ARR, and really makes characters look terrible. And don’t even get me started on all the follow/stalk quests.  Who thought this - or having so many - was a good idea?  I don’t mind walking around with any of the NPCs, but the fucking follow/stalk quests need to go and whoever thought they were a good idea needs to rethink their career choices.   These were a huge drag and sticking point, and really took away from how enjoyable EW could have been.  The first one I could understand, but past that they didn’t need to keep doing it. The maps of the new zones?  While pretty, most were a pain in the ass to navigate before flight, and certain areas prevented you from acquiring flight until you were later into MSQ.  TWICE. This was cute with Kholusia, but this was a pain in the ass this time dealing with two zones like this.  Slow me down with meaningful story events, don’t slow me down with bad geography design. For positives, the trial boss designs definitely had Yoshitaka Amano all over them.  The designs for Hydaelyn and the Endsinger were INCREDIBLE, especially the latter.  Radz-At-Han has become my favorite of the new locations, which surprised me as I really thought I’d enjoy Sharlayan’s aesthetic more.  Elpis was also stunning, and I could spend oodles of time just hanging around there.  As for the Loporitts, I’d happily go anywhere the adorable little bunny people wanted me to go. The ending? Pretty satisfying over all, and both looking forward to and dreading whatever comes next, in equal measure. They’re going to be hard pressed to top the last decade. All in all, it’s a fair wrap-up of 11 years of continuous storyline.  Honestly, I’m content, I just still feel like it could have been a lot more than what was delivered.

What do you hope to see storywise, in Revendreth in the next patch?
I really want to see the progress that’s been made in putting Revendreth back together, and some more of the internal politics tbph, like. We run around and do the world quests, and sometimes Ren or Draven has us do something tactical to keep Denathrius’ loyalists out of Sinfall, but we only got that One Big Meeting with the remaining Harvesters once (which I felt was kind of lackluster, given that they were all ‘u don’t have any leverage so I’m not getting involved :/’ as if the Jailer and the oblivion he wants to share with everyone will just pass them by if they sit it out and don’t help Renathal), and I want to see where things are. If anyone’s had a change of heart, wtf is going on with the Redelav’s and Maldraxxus now that we’ve killed the Tithelord and exposed Kel’thuzad, how Kael’thas is coming along.
Also I know it’s super granular and not really part of the metanarrative but I want to fix the infrastructure in Revendreth, like it’s CLEAR it’s been falling apart bc of the anima drought and Denathrius withdrawing his attention into Castle Nathria. I just wanna make things nice for the Venthyr :(
I’d ALSO like Blizz to stop being cowards and let us soulbind with Renathal lmfao. I’m 100% sure that won’t be a thing but it is on my wishlist for 9.1 regardless.
I’m not actually sure how realm-centric the next patch is going to be, since it seems like they’re really focusing on Maw content and Anduin’s noncon goth phase, but it would be nice since the whole push of this expansion has been to deeply bond with the covenants and make them stronger and help heal what’s been hurt if we could see some of the progress that’s been made. If nothing else like, the anima conduits are back up and flowing and I feel like that should show some kind of change across all the realms, not just Revendreth.

if you want: shoujo ai BUT / kind of weirdo MCs with not the best or most interesting personalities / very slow storyline that goes nowhere / mediocre art
Ah... fuck.
Here’s another Shoujo Ai anime that was less than mediocre. I’m seriously getting a bit tired at this point. No, you know what, I’m pissed! What is up with no one being able to write an interesting and coherent wlw story?
“Adachi and Shimamura” had some potential with its beginning. The 2 main characters meet in a small space on the second floor of the gym as they’re skipping class. The first episode constantly talks about how the girls are “delinquents” and because neither of them were responsible they just “dragged each other deeper”. Except that’s a fat LIE because in the next episode one of them is like “hey lol if we keep skipping class we will fail” and from then on this whole introduction is basically forgotten and the anime turns into your every day school life SoL anime.
Now at first I wasn’t sure if it was because I don’t even really like SoL romances but the anime felt insaneeeely slow. Like, nothing happened in this entire anime. Storywise, maybe that’d be acceptable. Why? Because SoL very heavily relies on its cast, their character progression and their relationships with each other. However, that’s the most lacking part of this anime.
Let’s start with Adachi, as most people have exclusively been shitting on her because she is a more obvious character than Shimamura. Adachi is a loner; not really by choice, she is just really shy and has no social skills. When Adachi meets Shimamura in the gym, she instantly gravitates towards her, thinking that the only people who’d waste their school lives skipping class are friendless loners like her. But it turns out that that’s not the case. Shimamura has friends and is liked by quite a few people. This is where Adachi’s first personality flaw comes in: obsessive possessiveness. This doesn’t manifest in aggressive ways, more passive aggressively. Adachi doesn’t want Shimamura to hang out with anyone else but her. She doesn’t want anyone else to talk with her on the phone but her. She doesn’t want her to *smile* at anyone but her. She tells this to the viewer in inner monologues but instead of talking things out with Shimamura she just starts avoiding her. Her behaviour is further worsened by the fact that because she never really had any kind of a relationship with anyone before, she doesn’t know what’s normal and what’s not. This includes her definitely more than friendly feelings towards Shimamura which she thinks are just “normal” and nothing to think much about. I was kind of dismayed that Adachi’s character actually gets worse as the anime goes on.
Now, Shimamura is doesn’t get much thrown at her as next to the very,,, strong personality of Adachi, hers is much more subtle to understand. Shimamura isn’t actually a social person. She doesn’t care about people or maintining a relationship with them. But she still kind of forces herself to act like she cares. Because one can actually make conversation with her though, she seems more approachable and in the sequences where we follow Shimamura and what she is doing, she meets some of the side characters to hang out or meets the weird alien girl (no, I don’t know what she is about). Even if she believes that all relationships are fleeting in life and working towards maintining them is too troublesome, she still obviously has a life while Adachi’s whole life is Shimamura herself (very unhealthy, y’all). Much more low-key is Shimamura’s lack of belief in herself. She doesn’t think that she is pretty or nice which is probably half of why she remains completely oblivious to Adachi’s behaviour. The other half is probably that holding hands and cuddling is kinda normal among female friends.
Their relationship is messy. Neither of them understand the other, not really. Shimamura’s nonchalant behaviour and inability to say no to things she might not want to do just fuels Adachi’s obsessive behaviour. You can see where their relationship will fall apart before they even got together!
The supporting cast doesn”t offer much interest either. There’s some weird alien girl whose existence is not explained and 2 of Shimamura’s friends who seriously have more chemistry in the 5 minutes of airtime they got throughout the whole anime.
There’s also the unnecessary fanservice (who knew thighs could glow so much!) and the lackluster art. The anime tried to use the typical Shoujo Ai sympolisms with the flowers, galaxies, fireworks, sskura petals, but because the art is so basic, these scenes came off more distracting or downright comical in most instances.
I really wanted to like this, I really did. The whole time I was blaming myself that *I’m* at fault for not enjoying it because I don’t really dabble in SoL romance. But I realized that no, this anime was actually pretty mediocre. Sad times.
[4/10] (x)

Don't get me started on the downward spiral of RWBY music. Jeff and Casey do their best but you can tell how stale and repetitive the songs are now. I can recall the lyrics of volumes 1 and 2 but not the latest. Cinder's song during her past reveal was so boring and trite. Literally describing what's going on. Treating the audience like 5 year olds who can't read subtlety. It really annoys me tbh.
I've been avoiding this because I believe Jeff and Casey are brilliant musicians and they've done AMAZING work on the soundtrack...but I believe the music r3flects the tone, the music has been great but what used to be an ENTIRE season of ALL good songs has now become random hit or miss gems among...the forgettable.
Forever Fall is beautiful, Rising was great, Big Metal Shoe was fun and upbeat, volume 8's intro is fire....but, uh, since volume 5 that's about all I can remember that stuck out.
Couldn't even tell you the name or tune of Volume 7's intro because it was so....lackluster.
But Jeff has so little to work with storywise for lyrics that all he really CAN do is describe what's on screen because we know so little ABOUT Cinder to even have her emotions on paper because we DON'T KNOW HER AT ALL.
Jeff, Casey, you're AMAZING. Please don't take this as a slight against them, I just think it's due to lack of good material to write music for.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (1974)
the first thing i noticed was that poirot as a character makes for an extremely odd protagonist. i’ve never seen or read any other poirot stories, so for his first scene in the movie, i was slightly confused as to why we were watching an odd little frenchman (yes, he is belgian) exchange witty, clipped pleasantries with a footman. even when i knew him to be poirot, it struck me how different he was from the typical main character. he is middle-aged, out of shape, with a very thick accent, a strange, distinctly manicured hairstyle and mustache (for which we get to see his odd, interesting grooming habits, including a hairnet, mustache-net, and silk gloves over lotion for those soft, pallid, 11-year-old-venetian-boy-sitting-at-a-piano hands). he is incredibly witty, but also brusque, even rude, laughs at odd things in an odd way. he eventually grew on me a great deal, but i am still surprised at how alienating, though not outright unpleasant, this movie allowed its protagonist to be. a weirdness so deliberate as to not only be Allowed, but fully leaned into. it was refreshing. i wondered how the remake would treat him.
the movie itself was excellent, the mystery doubly so. they presented the clues in such a way as to let audience guess alongside -- even more difficult ones, like the H / natalia detail could be found by somebody with the right prior knowledge. poirot is the detective because he had All the right knowhow (not only cyrillic, but details to the case, that princess dragomiroff was the godmother, how to read a burned letter, etc.) i caught the michel connection at the very beginning, remembering the accused maid’s surname as soon as pierre told poirot his full name. even the clues they left poirot deliberately, like answering the door in french while telling him ratchett’s monolingualism hurt his business. these details are what makes watching a mystery fun. hearing the word “cauchemar”, and being rewarded for it a few scenes later. the only thing i think was truly less accessible was the 12s thing (12 stab wounds, 12 capital letters in the threatening letters, etc). there being thirteen suspects but only twelve passengers (apart from poirot) might occur to someone, but i don’t think anybody counted how many capital letters there were in notes written in pencil.
(bianchi saying after every interrogation “he did it!” “she did it!” “it was him!” was especially hilarious given the truth.)
the acting was pretty on, and the ending was believable -- seeing each person slowly, solemnly stab cassetti as they tried to find their closure was really moving, especially as it’s before you even consider poirot might let them go. that decision at the end to not turn them all over was a lovely, unforeseen twist -- offering to give the police the first, more Simple explanation, and actually giving the choice to bianchi, not calling it himself. he did his job, the rest does not concern him, especially in this very morally gray case.
fantastic movie, and i totally understand why folks thought it was ripe for a remake. storywise it’s solid, and proves it can be acted compellingly despite rather lackluster cinematography. docked a star for like 8 minutes of train b-roll. we get it, you sprung for a train

Is 3 Houses "New Player" friendly? I kinda wanna pick it up, but only played Awakening (and that was a few months ago, so not much history with the franchise). Also, how does it compare with Awakening in terms of level up/reclass/skills/etc?
It’s very new player friendly imo! There’s no Phoenix mode or anything, but you have features like the Retreat option (which lets you retain experience and restart the battle with all of your equipment durability set back to before you began) and Casual is back.
I do think there’s a lot of features, and that can be overwhelming, but you’ll pick them up quickly.
Honestly, I prefer Awakening in terms of skills and classes. Three Houses’s system is just tedious on a first playthrough, and the chosen master classes are super wonky. Some feel like a straight up upgrade (ex. War Master) and others are sidegrades (ex. Mortal Savant which is also kinda slow but that doesn’t matter if you have someone like Felix or Hubert who are already fairly fast). Also there’s no grounded mounted class for beginner class so riding is a pain to level up early on.
There’s also less skills (or at least what it feels like) than Awakening which I don’t really care for since I don’t get to customize the units as much. And the Dark Mage/Dark Bishop class is locked behind a certain limited enemy which is annoying. Plus, there’s no flying mage in this game which sucks (I like Dark Fliers and Malig Knights so).
And imo, the maps (at least for Blue Lions) are kinda forgettable and bad for the most part. There’s no gimmicks like Conquest, and Fog of War isn’t utilized enough. And there’s a lot of reused maps. I know they take place at the same location, but imo, the timeskip should have made some changes to the terrain instead of the same map but with more enemies spawning.
Reclassing is also a pain with certification exams because it is a random chance that’s decided as the day begins (so no save scrumming unless you go back to before the week began). You can raise it to 100% ofc, but you waste time if you don’t try every week when the option opens. For a first playthrough, you don’t have the benefits of new game+ to make it easier to get to the classes you want.
There’s also the garden where you can farm stat boosters, and cook to temporarily raise stats if you end up getting bad level ups.
And mounted units are super good with Canto and Dismount, and the size of the maps. The only thing they’re missing is Rescue (carrying units not the spell) and Hunter’s Volley (they restricted it this game). Not to mention the higher level armored battlelions and the Stride command (give all alies within range extra movement).
It’s still a good game ofc, and the lords are overpowered (not a Roy situation where he promotes super late and has kinda average growths across the board). Like... you can most likely solo maps w/ Dimitri by plopping him into a hoard of non magical enemies in Normal. The only maps I had problems with was 12 and 22 (b/c the first one had surprise spawns of certain characters, and I was collecting encounter quotes) and the latter b/c a deluge of enemies pop up.
Storywise, I think it’s fantastic (I have problems ofc w/ it, I wouldn’t call it above Geneology or the Tellius duo, but it’s up there). For me (as someone who started with Blue Lions and still needs to go through the other 3 routes), Dimitri is honestly one of the best lords in the series character-wise. His story is very much “classic Fire Emblem” but it shines in the interactions between the characters, especially Byleth and Dimitri, and on his personality post-skip. It’s honestly one of those routes where I’d recommend F!Byleth over her counterpart to take the Dimitri S-support since it ties in so nicely. I’m still saltly about M!Byleth not having the option to tbh.
That’s another of Three Houses’s strengths, the interactions between your chosen House. It feels very much like a group of friends.
As a side note, if you choose Edelgard as your first route, explore at least once every month and make sure to talk to her.
Overall, good game and a contender for GOTY, but also some obnoxious problems like the barren calendar system, split route (a lot of content and replayability but also threads are often left loose or left to epilogue), questionable reclass/skill system, etc.
Absolutely worth $60+,if you decide on the expansion pass which will eventually come with more classes and story, and a return to form after Fates’s kinda lackluster story (though I wouldn’t say it does better than Fates in some aspects like self-contained and satisfactory routes or gameplay at least for Blue Lions). Self-contained as in threads aren’t left too jarringly loose.

Note
open asks: which is your favourite ME game, and why? any particular mission or scene that makes you all emotional (in a good or bad way)?
Storywise? The first Mass Effect because I feel like it most fits the whole ‘space opera’ vibe, but I rarely play it anymore because it’s so bogged down by faulty controlling and the bad idea of the Mako. I figure, I played through it to get all the achievements so I shouldn’t need to play it more XD
However, I really enjoy the others too. Part two has a really epic feeling story, but it’s more action than I’d say sci-fi space opera like the first. That’s not to say it isn’t good, but it just has a different feel to it, much like the third. I do really enjoy the actual fact that your decisions matter at least to an extent in who survives the suicide mission.
I like part three too, but less for its story because it seems so rushed and lackluster. Almost like it builds itself up for something big, but forgets it all by the end and just peters out with a puff of smoke. What I do like is the way the characters act and interact. It feels much more like they actually spent time writing the characters and crew interactions. Sure, I am spoiled and wish for even more interaction, but I found a really cool mod for PC that helps put some more life into the little things.
I think the most emotional mission in all the series is the suicide mission as a whole. I swear I’ve played it so many times, but it still gets my heart pumping and anticipation up when I go into it. Will someone die this time? Have I missed something? I know I have no reason to worry, but I think a lot of it has to do with how they’ve written it. It’s action-packed from start to finish, so you’re on the edge of your seat even after playing it so many times.
Thanks for the asks!
