Lucius Return to Brooklyn to Close Out Album-Anniversary Tour with Sold-Out Show

Lucius – Brooklyn Steel – February 3, 2024

Lucius, celebrating 10 years since the release of their breakthrough Wildewoman album, arrived at a sold-out Brooklyn Steel Saturday night and so did nearly a couple thousand fans, some of the packed crowd clad in sparkly attire, some just feeling sparkly on the inside, all ready to help celebrate the best they could. The band, fronted by dual lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, was based in Brooklyn when the long-player was released, making the show a trip down memory lane in more ways than one. The album was more or less played straight through, opening with the title track, featuring clip-clop percussion, four-part harmonies, thumping bass and plenty of jubilant heys to get the audience stirring.

The first couple of songs featured red-and-blue-make-purple lighting and it seemed that the mixing of two primary colors to make a new palette of hues was a visual theme for the night, complementing the mixing of Wolfe and Laessig’s two voices to create a wealth of sonic hues. “Go Home” and “Until We Get There” were of the yellow + blue = organic green variety, both featuring slide guitar and slow-grow harmonies that drew in additional singing from across the room. Later in the set, “Dusty Trails,” featuring guest vocals from friend-of-the-band Louis Cato, found the stage bathed in a heartwarming orange. Ten years out, Lucius are experts at blending the folky elements and soulful elements, easily switching between the purple tambourine bounce of “Tempest” and the emerald single-microphone harmonies of “Housewarming,” a song that didn't make the final cut of the album but sounded right at home right in the middle of this live version. 

There wasn’t a ton of banter over the course of the night, but they made up for it by reading aloud letters that were left in a mailbox that had been stationed at the merch table for this tour. The notes were incredibly personal and touching and speak to the connection Lucius and Wildewoman have made with their fans over the past decade. Following this with a gorgeous rendition of My Morning Jacket’s “Wonderful” drove the emotional punch even deeper. The set closed with “Genevieve,” the lights a pure fiery red, the full band a singular force of dance-now rhythm. The show ended with an encore that found Lucius in the middle of the audience, the lights a joyous all-encompassing white, the band and their spectrum of fans indistinguishable, together singing, “So turn off the lights when you leave / ’Cause we’ve got everything we’re gonna need.” —A. I just saw san fermin live, I really enjoyed it! I meant to post my thoughts about their new album (maybe I will later, idk) but it was a good album so naturally I enjoyed seeing it performed. bride was insane to hear live, I adore charlene kaye's voice but I think claire wellin has a slightly larger range, and she really elevated an already great song by pushing every high note.

before I complain about anything, I do want to reiterate that the performance was fantastic and I would absolutely see them again. they're amazing. that being said... sonsick was kind of disappointing. I think it's a really difficult song to perform live, especially if you can't match the frankly insane vocal range of holly laessig and jess wolfe, although claire came pretty close and I think overall the biggest problem was the lack of a female backup vocalist. it made half of the chorus sound muted and generally underwhelming.

they also didn't play no promises, which bummed me out :( I guess it's not one of their more popular songs, but it's one of my favorites and I was hoping to hear it. oh well. they did close with jackrabbit, which was really fun. but I'm annoyed at the crowd for not singing along when claire asked them to, because I have a bad voice and being one of the only people singing out loud was embarrassing! but I powered through it because I never say no to a beautiful woman. and also because singing along at concerts is fun even if you suck :)

found the interview where they talked about it and its interesting seems like there was no clarity on what was gonna happen and what was gonna be used and it seems like if they asked for a feature they would've gotten booted off the track and other people would've been used instead which definitely leaves a sour taste in my mouth but its interesting to see how things work sometimes ig:

Wolfe: They didn’t want to credit us as being featured on the record. And I say “they,” because we never spoke to Harry about this or anything. It’s been one of the moments that’s really sort of hurt us because here’s this opportunity… Normally when we go into the recording process, we work out the details ahead of time. We always ask, is this a feature? Is there a possibility for a feature? Because one, it changes how we’re going to charge people. And two, it changes like how we’re going to approach it, in a lot of ways. But we didn’t know we were going in to sing. We thought we were just going in to write. And after the fact, we heard the song and we’re singing the entire chorus without him, without anyone, just us. And…

Laessig: They said “We’re not having any features on the record. And if you don’t want that, then we’ll just take your voices off and replace them.”

It appears Spring popped in for a quick visit, dropped off flowers which are now in full bloom, and invited us to activate Milwaukee's outdoor recreations again. And activate we did! On May 17th, a little over 140 of us met at Discovery World for some goooood vibes. 

Yes, there was divine coffee by Discourse; yes, there were Sciortino's baked goods (thanks to your generous donations!), but did you know there was also a MINI MARKET?! That's right. May's 30-Second Pitcher line-up consisted of makers within our sweet, sweet CM community. More on that later <3

Bryan W. Wunar, CEO of Discovery World, graced the stage and shared unique perspective on this educational establishment's history as well as the vision for its future. Discovery World is making moves to be even more involved in the community than ever before. Peeping at their upcoming events, you'll see they're soon to host Bike Station Week, a Zine Workshop, and oh... another Milwaukee Makers Market hosted by the iconic Ryan Laessig!

Another exciting Disco World event to mark on ye ole calendar is... *drum roll please*... Adobe's Create Now tour! Registration is open for the event on June 18th from 5:30-8:00PM. We'll be there and hope to see you too.

Ryan Laessig can't help but love Milwaukee with his whole heart. He grew up in South Milwaukee, then lived on the East Side, then back over the bridge in Bay View, and most recently calls the Garden District home. 

You know who he found right away in all those neighborhoods? People who make things. If artists and makers were moths, then Ryan is the flame. Community organizing was a natural addition to his already ripe repertoire of teaching and creating art himself. What started with humble beginnings (read: zero followers on instagram), is now a bustling community both online (now 10k+ followers!) and IRL (800 shoppers each market!). 

The Sunday after our event, Milwaukee Makers Market popped off at Ivy House and, I must admit, the experience felt even sweeter than in previous markets. Maybe it's because there's a knowing of what these markets mean to the curator behind them... or maybe it's the stories we learned about some of the makers themselves. Whatever it was, vibrations were raised. Raise your vibes too and be sure to treat yourself to Ryan's talk if you missed the event and to add an upcoming M.M.M. event to your calendar.
