This creates large blue-green algae blooms in the lake's water which is then released into rivers and waterways. The nutrient-rich waste water amplifies the naturally occurring red tide and this year it has done so with such alarming efficiency that Florida shores are covered with dead and dying animals who were unable to survive it. Brevetoxins in red tide can attack the nervous system of marine life and blue-green algae depletes oxygen levels in the water, creating terrifying chances of survival for Florida's marine life. This infestation of toxic algae has inundated beaches and waterways and it is killing manatees, turtles, fish and seabirds at alarming numbers. A significant contributor in the issue is nutrient pollution from agricultural run-off, correlated to the #BigSugar industry and years of management missteps with #LakeOkeechobee. This kind of devastation to wildlife is close to my heart. I was exasperated and heart-broken to see marine life killed by a red tide back in 2015 off of North America’s west coast in Alaska. KOA Diaries 🏕 Moore Haven pt 2/2 After I left the campgrounds on the Tuesday of my trip, I set off through the countryside, admiring the beautiful crops swaying in the wind—I had never seen that plant before and thought it looked like wheat, but surely I would recognize it if it were? Later that week, I found out it was sugarcane, which totally makes sense in retrospect! 🏕 I had a few missteps throughout the day while trying to find nature spots since most places didn’t exist on Google maps. But it was fun to explore and eventually I found a beautiful hiking trail in the countryside that led through a prairie and a lakeside park with trails and an observation tower that looked out onto the waters that lead to Lake Okeechobee. 🏕 In the actual town of Moore Haven, I admired the architecture of the county courthouse and the quaint small-town feel. It reminded me of the adorable Ohio village that I grew up in. 🏕 With heavy clouds bringing an end to daylight hours sooner than anticipated, I rushed to the last site of my day, which I think was the only item on my itinerary that was listed online and easy to find! The Ortona Indian Mounds Park was a brief stop, as it was fairly small, but it provided some beautiful views of moss-covered trees as well as a few plaques detailing what we know about the prehistoric history of this location. 🏕 Honestly, the only reason I came to this region was because of the KOA. I went into this trip thinking that there wouldn’t be much to do and I could just cross this region off my list. 🏕 However, it just provided a teaser for a future trip. I would like to complete the hiking trails that I discovered, and I would like to bike the 110 mile trail around Lake Okeechobee, which passes through this region. 🏕 P.S. Can you believe I thrifted that true 70s dress for like $5 at @goodwillintl ?!
