Prompt: Create an animated movie concept about cambrian era organisms attempting to be the first creature to ever emerge onto dry land.

Dry Lands

Tagline: A tale of flopping and floundering

Logline: Shelly (a trilobite with big dreams) and Gill (a perpetually grumpy lampshell) lead a ragtag team of Cambrian sea creatures on a series of hilarious (and ultimately doomed) attempts to become the first land dwellers.

Characters:

Shelly (Voice Only): An optimistic trilobite with a boundless sense of adventure and a burning desire to walk on land. Despite her enthusiasm, Shelly's small legs and heavy shell make true land exploration difficult.

Gill (Voice Only): A grumpy lampshell who reluctantly joins Shelly's expeditions due to their symbiotic relationship (Shelly protects Gill from predators, Gill provides a safe haven for Shelly in times of danger).

Spike (Voice Only): A spiky-shelled opabinia with a dry wit and a knack for inventing (mostly useless) gadgets to aid their landlocked ambitions.

Clam (Silent): A giant clam with surprising strength and a knack for catapulting the others (unwillingly) towards land.

Plot Summary:

The Cambrian seas are teeming with life. Shelly, a trilobite with a head full of stars, dreams of one day venturing onto the mysterious land beyond the crashing waves. Unfortunately, her small legs and heavy shell make even the shallowest beach an insurmountable obstacle.

Determined to be a pioneer, Shelly rallies her fellow sea creatures. Gill, a grumpy lampshell who relies on Shelly for protection, reluctantly joins the expedition. They're joined by Spike, an inventive opabinia with a knack for building contraptions (most of which end in hilarious failures).

Their first attempt involves Clam, a giant clam with surprising strength, who launches them one by one towards the shoreline. Of course, things don't go according to plan. Shelly gets stuck in the sand, Gill lands with a thud in a patch of seaweed, and Spike's "land-glider" invention ends in a spectacular crash.

Undeterred, they try again and again – building hot air balloons powered by bioluminescent jellyfish (which attract hungry predators), constructing makeshift bridges out of seaweed (which get washed away by the tide), and even attempting to ride on the backs of unsuspecting sea turtles (who promptly dive back into the water).

Through their constant failures, the unlikely crew forms a strong bond. They learn to appreciate each other's strengths (even Gill's grumpiness can be helpful in times of crisis) and discover the joy of camaraderie.

The climax arrives when a volcanic eruption threatens their underwater home. Shelly, inspired by their past attempts at land exploration, devises a daring plan. Using Clam's strength, Spike's ingenuity, and the combined effort of all the sea creatures, they build a giant, bioluminescent raft powered by the collective light of the jellyfish.

They don't quite reach the land – the current takes them off course. But they end up discovering a hidden coral reef teeming with life, a new underwater paradise they can call their own.

The power of friendship, even in the most unusual forms.

Visual Style:

The film utilizes a vibrant and colorful animation style, showcasing the diverse and bizarre creatures of the Cambrian period. The humor is slapstick-heavy, with exaggerated expressions and cartoony mishaps. Land is depicted as a mysterious and slightly menacing place, shrouded in mist and populated by strange shadows (foreshadowing the future evolution of land-dwelling creatures).

Floundering Forward is a heartwarming and hilarious animated adventure that celebrates the spirit of exploration, the power of friendship, and the beauty of the underwater world, even if the land remains just out of reach.
