Since I still have yet to complete the Bedman aquarium fic for Mermay (I promise I'll finish it eventually...) I'm gonna do the thing I did last time where I toss out a bunch of little random bits of lore for the fun of it and to fill the space. A chunk of it name-related specifically this time, since while in-game it's all music references it's a little less realistic here
-Sin was named by I-no, after several weeks of trying and failing to determine where he had appeared from and how nobody had found him until he was already born. In a fit of frustration, she referred to him as 'A sin against nature and a blight on my fucking existence' and that's what they decided to go with.
-Prior to that, he was given the designation 'PE-EK2.' 'PE' is a standard designation for all unnamed subjects, short for 'Piscinus Erectus,' the scientific name for mer as a species
-Millia's name is a result of a bad game of telephone between languages. The Russian lab she was raised in used numerical designations, but the staff would affectionately refer to her as 'милая' or 'Milaya,' meaning 'sweetie.' A scientist mistakenly put it down on a piece of paperwork, and the translation software transliterated it into English as 'Milaya' rather than its actual meaning, leading that office to believe that was actually her given name. Sometime afterwards, when in a verbal discussion regarding her transfer, the director misread it and further mispronounced it 'Millia,' which ended up on the official documentation for Illyria Aquarium
-As a result, trying to get any paperwork from her old facility is like pulling teeth because there's just enough differences in names for nobody to realize that they're all talking about the same octopus
-Sol's is somewhat similar to how he was named in canon. Aria and Dr. Comisky chose it to symbolize his role in the advance of scientific study, as a 'beacon of knowledge and hope for the future of research.' Asuka had suggested 'Frederick' viewing it as a more 'respectable' name, but the vote was 2-1.
-Of the three original project members, Sol was by far attached to Aria the most. After the project broke apart, Sol refused to interact with Asuka at all, and still do this day comes across as having a dislike for him.
-Fanny gave Faust his name because she's a theater nerd
-Most mer don't have surnames, it isn't as though they have similar family structures as humans do. The Valentines only share a name with Aria and Jack-O because Aria had a habit of calling them by that, initially just as a playful scolding when they misbehaved
-Chipp was originally found in a tiny riverside village by a half-blind old man, Tsuyoshi. At first mistaking Chipp for a human, he ended up taking care of him and later trying to raise him like a son. After the man's passing, other members of the village had no idea how to care for Chipp in the same way, they called the aquarium and arranged for him to be picked up
-Because of his upbringing, Chipp is one of the few mer that can read with relative fluency. He couldn't read a novel if you handed it to him, but he can read signs and the panels inside his tank
-Testament was estranged from their father for several years, being a stark pacifist while he was a decorated veteran. The two thankfully reconciled after some help from Dizzy
-Dizzy isn't actually her real name. If asked, she says it was because she was a clumsy child that always crashed into things
-Aria has been sworn to secrecy, but the real reason she's called that is because of the one time she accidentally ate half a tray of weed brownies in college thinking they were normal ones, and for the next several hours she could barely walk straight without plowing right into a wall and tripping over herself.
-Testament's name is actually Testament, at least legally. They changed it when they updated their pronouns
-Goldlewis has a mer-sona, but if you asked him, he would deny it. He has spent a significant amount of money commissioning artwork of it
-The aquarium generally tries to avoid feeding mer any kind of 'people food,' but a handful of mer have expressed a like for certain foods even though they aren't supposed to eat them.
-Nagoriyuki likes rice (nobody's sure why)
-Bedman will eat most meat, including chicken and hamburger (being raised poorly and not given an adequate diet)
-Sin, likewise, will eat basically any meat, but has shown a specific fondness for ham
-Jam once climbed out of her tank to steal Axl's lunch, and they're still not quite sure what was in it that she wanted so bad, or if she was just doing it entirely for the sake of it
-Presumably due to pica from vitamin deficiencies and blood loss, A.B.A. has eaten several coins that have fallen into her tank
-Literally nobody knows where Raven came from. I-no pretends she knows and is just hiding it but she doesn't. They don't even know if Raven is his first or last name. Nobody has any clue, and if not for how affable and accident-prone he was, it would unnerve everyone quite a lot

Thank you for tagging me, @nachosncheezies! 💖
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people
So, I have been with little to no free time to write since last year, and I've been barely posting something lately. But I liked your version, so I'm going to copy you: I'll do the first lines of 5 posted stories, and then I'll do first lines of some WIPs I'm currently working on.
Disclaimer: once again, English isn't my first language.
No good deed goes unpunished (Blindspot, post ending) (There are still chapters in progress)
Change can be painful. Some people prefer to avoid it. But change is the only constant in this world and sooner or later it happens. After years of working for a government force, and fighting to stop dangerous criminals, the time for a change came to the team. After all the adrenaline rush they had felt the last couple of years, exposing their lives behind their ideals of a greater good, reinserting themselves into society in a nice and quiet life wasn’t easy to any of them. The first couple days felt like vacations, they were still processing the fact they hadn’t to live hidden anymore. They could finally rest, reconnect with their families, and recover from injuries.
Sleep is Overrated (Blindspot, Zapatterson, 3+1)
Like every software engineer, Patterson knew two basic truths: coffee is needed to exist and sleep is overrated. She could spend entire nights awake and working, she had done it before and those had turned out to be very productive nights. Like those working on her science projects in middle school, or like when it was exam season at college. She had done it for this job before too, especially since Jane had appeared in that bag in the middle of Times Square.
Meet the Zapata's (Blindspot, Zapatterson, fake dating)
“Ok… Are you ready?” Tasha turned off the car and removed her seat belt.  “Are you sure about this?” Patterson was about to freak out, she had seen too many movies to know that it could end very well or terribly badly. “I don’t know, but I already told them you were coming and…” she leaned in to get a better look out the window next to Patterson, “they all are there in the window, watching us.”
You built your destiny (Lost, during season 5)
When Juliet saw that boy with glasses and blue eyes, she recognized in him the vivid image of Ben and panic overwhelmed her. She knew it could happen, she knew about Ben's life with the Dharma Initiative and The Others. But she had never expected to run into him face-to-face, to meet him in the cafeteria at every lunch, or have to smile at him and pretend there wasn't a whole history, with its adult version, that she longed to be able to put behind.
The betrayal (Blindspot, Zapatterson retelling) It actually starts with the dialogue from the show
“You have no idea how hard it was for me to keep that from you.” “How hard it was for you?!” she replied, facing her “I can still feel his hands on me when I try to fall asleep at night. Because before he beat me, shot me, and put a tracker device in me, he used to sleep in my bed.” She took a few steps closer to the brunette and mumbling so that only she would be able to hear, added, “You should know that more than anyone.” “I was trying to protect you,” Zapata shortened the distance between them, “I thought it would be better if you never knew he was alive.”
Some of my WIPs
Sly as a fox (Criminal Minds, Emily Whump)
Emily stared at the screen in the security room. She wasn't worried, she knew what she had to do and how to do it. The objective was to appear aloof and indifferent, this time she shouldn't seem interested in him, but in the copycat. Attack his ego through jealousy. But the last time she interrogated Karl Arnold, a mix of shame and disgust followed her for days, something she hadn't felt before, no even working for Interpol.
My weekend of love (Blindspot, Patterson x reader)
“Oh Great! What is she doing here?” Patterson sighted when she saw you in her lab. “What a warm welcome,” you replied with a smile and a scathing tone. You two didn't get along, and everyone down in the labs knew it. You joined the FBI on the same day and since then you have sought to prove yourselves better than each other, like a competition that has grown out of control. Your bosses learned over time that it was safer for everyone to keep you apart, which was ironic, cause your jobs complemented each other.
Time for some comfort (The Pitt, post shift) (Provisional title)
Dana arrived home completely drained. With her hand on the doorknob, she stared at the door, trying to process everything they’d just lived through, barely able to believe so much could happen in a single day. She gathered what little strength she had left to put on her best face before stepping inside. Benji would know it had been a rough day the moment he saw her black eye, even more if he’d caught the news, but she still intended to at least pretend she was fine. She’d already spent half her shift pretending enough to convince Perla, Princess, Mateo, Kim, and the med students. Even Abbot had bought the lie behind her smile, making him believe it was a rough shift that couldn’t get to her. Probably because Jack was doing even worse than she was.
Witness Protection (SVU, Barson) (Provisional title)
"Liv!" Fin's voice sounded far away. He screamed her name, but she wasn't able to sit and see him. There was a warm and humid feeling, along with an iche in the side of her neck. Her eyes big and filled with terror, her breath entrecortada. She laid motionless on the parking lot floor, still in shock to move.
Nightmares (Blindspot, 5+1, post ending)
It was a stormy night when Rich woke up covered in sweat. He felt short of breath and overwhelmed. He could still feel the water over his face through the old cloth. The voices of the agents from the black site known as The Boat still sounded in his ears.
Nachos already tagged most people I interact with, but there are a few writers that I love their work and I still can tag, even if we barely talk (or if I recently followed you), so no pressure tags: @storiesofsvu @ladyriot @scarletfern @baubeautyandthegeek @danasevans @blackbird-brewster @vivaciousoceans @yesifitswithyou

Free resources to learn hacking
- https://www.hacksplaining.com/ (A good site to learn all about different types of vulnerabilities, ways to hack, ways to prevent hacking, etc. with hands on basic labs as well as quizzes and terminology.)
- https://hackthissite.org/ (This site provides in depth hacking challenges for beginners and people of all knowledge sets, there isn't much hand-holding as you progress, but YouTube helps a LOT.)
- YouTube (Content creators such as David Bombal, NetworkChuck, etc. come to mind, although John Hammond I believe is a bit underrated and very well knowledgable as well as less of a snake oil salesman when it comes to his content and his abilities and also do not discount small YouTubers as well, because some can be very knowledgeable from some of the ones I've looked for help with, particularly Chuck Moore and Sean Mancini.)
- https://www.khanacademy.org/ (Now hear me out, it doesn't have a TON of hacking content but when you need help with some stuff, like for me I needed some basics of cryptography and things such as that, it helped a good bit with some fundamentals, so try seeing if it has some content you might like.)
- Keeping up with news also generally helps you see current trends in security which helps as well.
- https://hbh.sh/home (Personally have not tried this yet, but Hellbound Hackers I have heard is a great wealth of information as well as having their own discord I believe for communication which is exciting.)
Lastly I wanted to say if you are studying for Cybersecurity certs I heard Jason Dion and Professor Messer are quite good and if you download Visual Studio Code - https://code.visualstudio.com/ as well as the extension that you need, learning code such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc. can NEVER hurt and can only help (especially when looking over code and connecting the dots), my personal favorites for coding/scripting for software languages that I am learning is Python as well as PowerShell because of the ease of use and ability to create decent projects in a reasonable amount of time (learning Linux and MySQL helps as well but it may take longer to learn, it all depends on your preferences and trial and error, as well as being determined.)
I hope my post helps! (and remember if you are a college student, particularly WGU, you get discounts/free offers for websites such as Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, etc.)
Thanks.

Biography
Hazal Ayşe Yildiz was born on February 21, 1991, in Izmir, Turkey, just minutes after her twin sister. Their parents, Ela and Kemal Yildiz, were overjoyed at the arrival of their twin daughters. Ela worked as an elementary school teacher, while Kemal ran a small grocery store in town. The family lived in a modest apartment above the store, where the twins often helped stock shelves and bag groceries after school. Growing up, the twins were inseparable. They spent their summers playing in the nearby olive groves and helping their grandmother make traditional Turkish dishes. She particularly loved math and was always eager to help her father calculate prices and inventory for the store.
When Hazal was 12, her parents decided to move to the United States for better job opportunities. They settled in a diverse neighborhood in Philadelphia, where Ela found work as a teacher's aide and Kemal started driving a taxi. The move was tough on the family, especially the girls, who struggled with the language and making new friends. Because of this Hazal threw herself into her studies, finding comfort in the universal language of mathematics. She joined the school's math club and slowly began to make friends. By high school, she had become fluent in English and was excelling in her classes, particularly in computer science.
After graduating high school, she earned a scholarship to study Computer Science at Penn State. During her freshman year, Hazal experienced a brief rebellious phase. Away from her parents' watchful eyes for the first time, she dove into the college party scene. She attended wild parties, drank more than she probably should have, and had a few casual flings. However, this lifestyle quickly lost its appeal, when some of her partners started wanting more, Hazal realized this wasn't the path for her. By the end of her first semester, she had refocused on her academics, channeling her energy back into her computer science coursework and extracurricular tech projects. She joined the international students' club, where she enjoyed sharing her Turkish culture with others. She also discovered a talent for coding and spent many late nights in the computer lab working on projects.
Upon graduation, Hazal landed a job at a mid-sized tech company in Philadelphia. She enjoyed the work but found herself missing her twin sister, who had moved to Wilmington for a job right. But she couldn’t leave her position just to be with her twin. That's when Wright Inc., a tech company in Wilmington, offered her a position. With a higher salary, and the chance to be near her twin—the offer was too good to pass up. In October 2023, she packed her bags and made the move. Unfortunately, Wright Inc. hasn't been the dream job Hazal hoped for. The CEO, Lincoln Reid, was a nightmare to work with. She often clashed with the guy. To say she hated the guy would be an understatement. Still, she wasn’t going to leave just because she couldn't stand the sight of him. He could suck on sour lemons for all she cared—she wasn’t going to leave.

He can even tell people that he liked the initial studying, got to the intense lab work part, and realized he didn't care for that and wanted to find another major.
And people will think "oh you were fine when you were READING about it but now that you have to MEASURE THINGS and USE SCIENCE, you realized you suck at it." They will not think "oh you cheated your way entirely through your first two years" unless he gives them more information.
One of the big problems with chatgpt and similar software, is that kids are being encouraged to use them for "small problems." For minor research. (E.g. "what kind of tools do I need to take apart a bookshelf?") For random info that may or may not be school related. ("What is Pride and Prejudice about?")
They are vaguely aware that using them directly and extensively for schoolwork is cheating. They don't understand why it's cheating. If the info it gives is correct (let's leave that alone for a minute), and they turn in a report with the correct answers, what did they do wrong?
They believe school is a matter of "Turn in papers with XYZ information on them to get grades." They do not believe school is a matter of "Learn XYZ information to get grades."
They are not being graded based on what they learn. They are being graded on what's on the paper they turn in. They understand, vaguely, that "learn this stuff" is the expected start point for getting the info onto the paper - but they also know that there are kids who know the stuff, but don't get good grades, because they can't get that info onto the paper.
(They know math/history/science but can't write well. Or English isn't their first language. Or they're sick enough that they're absent a lot. Or they have a disability that makes writing difficult and they're not allowed to use a computer & printer. Or they are brilliant but bored and just don't bother doing "boring" assignments. Or their home life doesn't allow them time to do the homework. And so on.)
They also realize there are kids who know fuck-all about the subject, but get good (or at least passable) grades.
(They write well and can bullshit their way on topics they don't know. Or they cram like crazy, pass tests well, and forget it all two days later. Or they keep begging the teacher for an extra chance, time extension, an exception to the requirements, until they get enough right to pass. Or they're the child of wealthy parents who have bribed or threatened the school into passing them. And so on.)
Kids are plenty savvy enough to figure out that grades are based on what you turn in, not what you learn.
In which case...why does it matter where the info on the paper comes from?
They get to college and at no point has it clicked "this is INFO I NEED TO UNDERSTAND" instead of "these are tests I need to pass."
...Because it is much cheaper and easier to teach kids to pass tests than to get them to learn the knowledge the test is presumably measuring.
...Because it is very much in the corporate sponsor's interests that they can understand the ads well enough to want to buy things, but not well enough to notice what's not mentioned. Not well enough to notice that the lousy grammar means the ad was written by a bot.
...Because nobody wants to consciously face the shame of realizing how much educational standards have dropped in the last hundred years.
...Because jobs used college education to substitute for racial discrimination when racial discrimination was forbidden, so suddenly everyone needed to go to college whether or not the jobs required it.
...Because COVID scrambled our education system and created dozens of new weak points in the already-fragmented "get them to actually learn stuff" process.
Because of so many other reasons.
We should be angry about people using chatGPT to submit things for college classes.
But as with any other aspect of the capitalist hellscape: Very little of the true blame should fall on the individual who's trying to figure out how to cope.
Blame the schools that don't hire enough educators to actually check student work.
Blame the school boards that don't allow students to be held back a year. Or two. Or three, until they know the material of that grade level.
Blame the government that doesn't fund the schools so they can't afford to teach everyone.
Blame the corporations that absolutely market their services to minors against the laws that say they're not allowed to gather data from minors.
Blame the government that doesn't enforce those laws.
Blame the employers that insist on college degrees for sales jobs.
Blame the community that insists boys are supposed to be good at sports and girls are supposed to be good at cooking and nobody is supposed to be good at civics.
Blame the patriarchy. Blame bigotry. Blame warmongers and venture capitalists.
The individual who grabs the cheapest, easiest tool to get through the assignment in front of them is very, very far down on the list of people responsible for the current fuckery in the education system.
"i don't care if they make their whole way though uni with chatgpt" i think you guys are so internetpilled that you have forgotten there are actual jobs out there that require people to know what they are doing in any way possible or else people die
