Lamb in the Snake Den

Warnings: Kidnapping, mention of child neglect, Shigaraki being unintentionally creepy, infertility and unwanted hypnosis
Tumblr media
There was always one golden rule of your little village that everyone was slated to follow. Never go into the forest after dark. One might think that it was a silly rule born out of small town fears but you would be wrong.
The rule was born after many particular circumstances that resulted in bloodshed, betrayal and abuse of the innocent. Two boys were banished from the village after circumstances beyond their control.
One was given an unwanted curse and the other was left to die after his father tried to play god but ultimately failed. At first they were left alone, peaceful and satisfied with the land they lived on.
Then hunters decided it would be an excellent adrenaline rush if they tried taking down the serpentine beasts for the thrill. A massive mistake.
First it was minimal things. Trashing the nagas’ nesting sights, cutting down their fruit trees, hunting down their usual prey.
Then they crossed a line. A hunter lit up a torch and tossed it into one of the caves where one of them was resting. Cowardly, they fled to avoid the naga’s more brutal mate.
They all giggled with sadistic delight when they heard a raspy, bloodcurdling scream. The laughter stopped when the scream turned from anguish to rage.
Legend said that the water supply turned an eerie shade of red after the hunters were never seen again. Really, the only proof of their existence was the severed torsos and bloodied rifles.
The two naga never really got over it, for how could one get over being forever wounded? Livestock went missing, people rarely wanted to gather water, people didn’t travel.
They all longed for the days of when all they had to fear were bears, giant hornets and cougars.
One day, the village leaders had enough and went out into the woods with torches to ask a simple question to the naga.
“What do you want from us?!” They shouted in unison. “We can’t keep living like this!” They stated. Red eyes stared back at them in the darkness, coarse scales rubbing against the dirt floor.
“That’s what we said when you parasites came for our land.” The naga answered back, voice dripping with malicious intentions. He scratched at his neck and circled around the primates he was forced to call human.
He couldn’t help but deviously chuckle at how scared they looked despite them trying to act all proud with their silly rifles and knives. ‘No better than a hackle pup trying to intimidate a fly.’
“My mate couldn’t even move after you bastards burned him. He didn’t wake up for a week.” The naga rasped, eyes hurt and angry.
“Just please give us a solution to end this madness. We’ll give you anything!” One pleaded. The naga’s chapped lips curled into a sneer before he began to hum quietly. He hissed lowly in thought before smiling lowly.
“I would like a hatchling.” The village elders were caught off guard, all dumbfounded and gawking at the naga.
“I don’t want stupid gold or even one of those wenches you keep at those brothels. I want a hatchling.” The naga’s mind wandered to the clutch of eggs he recently laid. All of them duds unfortunately. No doubt his poor mate was trying to keep them warm.
“A-are you mad?” A village elder accused. The naga snarled. “Have you acquired a taste of human flesh to the point where you’ll eat a child?” The naga snapped, saying that they either deliver or he would personally amp up the pressure if they didn’t comply.
That’s how you got here. It’d been a few months since that threat was made. The naga had delivered on his promise, half of the flock was taken instead of the usual one or two. Cattle was found to be dead of venom.
After this was made, you were given a special task. The orphanage head guided you to the large, wooden gates of the village. You were handed a simple wicker basket and told to pick the prettiest flowers you could find.
You listened, not paying attention to the somber gazes of the villagers and the night sky hanging overhead.
“Bye bye! Save me some dinner!” You gleefully called out as you naively waved goodbye to the gates. Then you happily marched into the forest.
You had always found yourself enamored with the forest, from the lush greenery to the charming animals you’d see in books. You were gonna pick so many flowers and show them off to all the kids back at the orphanage! This was practically a dream come true!
Your basket was filled with various flowers and the occasional core of a fruit. The moon shone over the trees as you frowned at your predicament. There was no more room in your basket.
And the silly orphanage head forgot to give you a map to get home! Usually the dark wasn’t so scary, for the village had lanterns, candles and other items to keep things bright. But the forest just had the moon.
“Mmm..” You muttered, walking deeper. You hoped that they saved you some dinner at least, the fruit was delicious but it wasn’t that filling. Your stomach growled hungrily.
Mashed potatoes, roasted mutton and pudding was on tonight’s menu and it sounded appetizing right now. “Cold.” You whispered weakly, feeling the breeze nip at your skin unforgivingly. Things were only going to get more frightening down the line.
Rough scales drifted along the dirt path as Tomura took account of happenings around him. Tomura was a territorial naga so he liked making sure that no filthy vermin was in his territory. After what happened to Dabi, Tomura wasn’t taking any chances.
He smirked at remembering his mate complaining about how he didn’t need to be babied and that he could hunt with Tomura tonight. Then he found himself busied with cooking his dinner. Tomura’s musings were cut short by the feeling of something sticky on his tail. “What the hell?” He muttered, coiling his tail around the object.
Tomura then smelt a sweet and tart scent. “Fermented fruit, perhaps?” He hummed. Nope, it was a fruit core. “Oh, those bastards better not be here.” Tomura growled, his rattle coming to life slightly. Other animals would devour the fruit whole. So, Tomura went back on the prowl. He still wasn’t over the humans denying him.
Things weren’t looking so good for you. Frustrated tears leaked from your eyes as you hid in a log, cobwebs in your hair and wicker basket knocked over in frustration.
You had been walking around in circles for a while. Every glimmer of hope that you’d be home was shattered. Your stomach continued growling, your cheeks stung due to the constant wiping of tears. The smell of wet wood made you cry harder. You longed for your comfy bed and plushies, you wanted a bedtime story.
This wasn’t fair! All you wanted was to pick flowers! Why wasn’t anyone looking for you? Your thoughts were cut off by a low, raspy voice and the sound of scales against the log.
“Come out, my filthy little human..”
It sounded like what the monster under the bed would sound like. You let out a frightened scream, trying to exit out the other side only for it to be blocked by a snake tail. A triumphant hiss was heard, a cold hand grasped your ankle, causing you to screech.
“There you are, now time to explain yourself-!” Tomura’s triumphant boasting was cut off when he was greeted with not an adult or hunter but a child? Wet cheeks, wide eyes and stained clothing. Tomura could smell the fruit smell radiating off of you.
Tomura was rare to feel genuine shame, for he had nothing to be ashamed of but this made the feeling blossom in his chest. “P-please mister, I-I’m sorry, I’m really sorry!” You cried, sobbing loudly now like a recently born baby. Tomura’s proud and bloodthirsty expression melted away into sympathy as he watched you cry.
It certainly didn’t help that he and Dabi were coming down from their mating cycle and a hormone crash. “Oh, it’s okay. Shh, hush it’s alright.” Shigaraki’s parental brain smacked him in the face and yelled at him to comfort the child. You cried harder, moreover frightened at Tomura’s body. “Oh, you poor baby. It’s just me, it’s just me. He soothed, trying to smooth out your hair.
“M-monster! Monster!” You cried loudly, hoping someone would help. To hear your crying. But nobody did, no frantic footsteps or answers back. Just your sobs and the sound of water babbling lazily.
Tomura’s face contorted with sympathy, watching as your poor, sad little face contorted with confusion as to why nobody was there. It was reminiscent of his own, of Dabi’s. Parental instincts kicked into high gear. “Hatchling, look at me.” Tomura cooed lowly, cupping your wet cheek and gently adverting your gaze to his own.
Hypnosis was a tool that naga used for a variety of purposes. Tomura and Dabi used it for prey, sleep assistance and other tasks. It was also a tool to get hatchlings to calm down when gravely injured, tantrums or a sleep aid. You fussed at first for the feeling was uncomfortable and genuinely frightening at first. “S-stop, f-feels weird!” You whined but Tomura soothed you.
“It’s okay sweet thing, papa’s here. Shh.” He purred, watching you ultimately relax in his hold. He smiled sweetly, wiping away any stray tears. “There now, no more tears.” He murmured, looking up at the sky then back at your dazed form. “Who sent you out here at this time of night, hm?” He asked, only getting a mutter. “No matter, you’re coming home with me anyway.” Tomura muttered, kissing your forehead.
“Let’s go home now.”

2023: The year of all time
This felt like the first year post-COVID where things really kicked into high gear for me personally. My new year's resolution was that I would go out and have fun for once.
And had fun I did.
I did some voicework reading for a story podcast, I went to a bunch of amazing concerts (nothing beats seeing Weird Al for my birthday!), and I sorted out a bunch of RL stuff and put a neat little bow on it. Thank goodness.
But fuck all that sappy shit: Here's a small collection of things I really enjoyed this year!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: An excellent sequel to a seemingly unfollow-uppable first film. Takes everything from ITSV, and amps it up to twenty with a stunning visual style, a sonically fitting soundtrack, and a meta-commentary on the nature of Spider-Man's character and whether they really deserve all the tragedy thrown at them.
Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe: The guys who made Pud did another show, this time with funding from the Australian Government! While stripped back in its setting, they continue to provide the same stupid bullshit that put me into laughing fits as they did with their Netflix show. Haven't they done well.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: I think when people heard about "An animated Scott Pilgrim show with the live-action cast and Edgar Wright producing", they did not expect "A proper dissection of Ramona Flowers' character and her motivations, as well as her own journey of forgiving the Evil Exes. Also lots of yaoi." Scott Pilgrim continues to dominate as the premier "guy learns not to be a shithead" franchise.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live in Accor Stadium: The Peppers prove their pertained power as performers by playing the purest psalms in their prospectus from the past 35 years (eugh, what a mouthful). Flea came out, did a 30-second handstand, waved and said hello to the moon and then got up some people littering in the crowd. Their life is more than just a read-through.
Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You: I had absolutely no clue who Caroline was before I listened to this album. I now realise that she might just be the person that pop needs right now. A soaring collection of songs destined to become classics down the line, like a greatest hits compilation that doesn't exist. We're all on Caroline's island, and we ain't leaving.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk: I kept my eye on this game as it was developing, and it was absolutely worth it to see it come through in the end. Satisfying gameplay that requires you to learn how to combo to progress, an addicting artstyle inspired by Y2K, and the soundtrack. Holy fuck the soundtrack. I just can't get enuf.
Weird Al Yankovic - TUROTRSIIIVT: Man, what a title. Emu Phillips come out swinging with jokes I did not expect, and then Weird Al comes out aggressively swinging, with all the songs you don't know him for. He then did a polka melody of his parodies, did a ritual halfway through, and then ended the concert on a high note. Only the best from Strange Alfred.
Doctor Who 2023 Specials: That bastard David Tennant returning led me down the rabbit hole known as watching Doctor Who, and did it ever pay off more than these specials. A trans woman saves the day and the Doctor realises he's bi, black, and needs therapy. A magnificent close on a chapter of one of the greatest sci-fis ever, and a bright step into the future.
The Hyperfixation of the Year award goes to none other than
Tumblr media
Homestuck, everyone's favourite webcomic! Everyone's.
And I think that's partly because I joined this website to begin with. I probably say this all the time, but leaving Reddit was probably the best decision I could have made at that time. As much as I reminisce, the communities I was in began to get a little stale. Same jokes, same shitposts, a different day. Tumblr in some strange way, is not that. It feels less like a big communal website and more like a collection of small towns spread across a large spot of land. Calm and village-like, you know?
So to all my mutuals, my followers, to the people that liked and reboggled my stinky posts, to all that offered mealworms and crickets in my askbox, thank you. "Gecko Boy" might just be a silly lil joke in the grand scheme of things, but it's a fun joke to play into.
Whatever comes next year, I know I've got the energy to keep going. Have a good 2024 everybody. <3

Lopunny Rave Green Zone
Tumblr media
The entrance, the beginning of the large artificial island made connected to the shore of Sunyshore City. Close enough people could walk back to the city and to the rave, but away enough not to bother the locals.
The Green Zone boasts excellent speakers, which pipe in music from the rave itself at a perfectly normal volume. Nothing blaring, just enough the words cam come in clearly for songs that had lyrics. Otherwise, enough one could make out the melodies and drops. Some may say that such an area wasn't needed, but in reality was quite important!
Nicknamed the Calm Lands, it was a safe space for people to go to when the rave got to be too much and just need some time to be quiet and still. There are some booths where people can pull a curtain to block out extra for even less stimulation. There were concessions here, too, where hot food was readily available as well as drinks. People just wanting to hang out without needing to shout could stay here to talk while also enjoying the performances being show on televisions all over the Green Zone.
There is a small dance floor in the corner; simple wood flooring, no lights or large amps. Just a space for people to do some dancing without too much stimulation or lack of space as would be the case in the other zones. In the opposite corner was a small play zone, with a few pinball machines, a whack-a-rattatta game and a dance rhythm game.
GREEN ZONE ROLL TABLE (REQUIRED 1D6)
1: While sitting here for a break, you spot someone you know and have a nice conversation with them. 2: One of your favourite songs comes on! You get onto the dance floor and just have your fun, even if it's a bit embafrrassing at first. Others join you and it's good fun. 3: You get yourself a snack. Whatever it is you get, the server gave you a double serving. Score! It's a good night. 4: A bit of an argument happens near the doors; you watch as staff take care of them and remove them from the premises. 5: You decided to dance -- on the dance machine! You're really killing it on the game, getting A++ as a final score. 6: You watch as someone barges out of the other zones, streaking naked and covered in paint and being chased by security, but always slipping away due to how much paint was on him.

Coconut Bread From Bill Granger, via Wednesday Chef, via The New York Times
I had to practically physically sit on my hands to keep myself from tweaking this, because I love coconut with so many other flavors — lime! (I’d add some zest) mango! pineapple! (I’d add chunks, or slather it with mango curd) banana! (I’d puree some into the milk portion) raspberries! brown sugar! (I’d replace some of the granulated sugar with this)– I wanted to incorporate at least one of them in each batch. I was additionally tempted to amp up the coconut, using coconut milk instead of regular milk or virgin coconut oil instead of butter. And yet, I’m glad I didn’t because it doesn’t need any fussing to taste fantastic. Okay, FINE. I fussed in one place: I browned the butter. These things, they happen when a recipe asks me to melt butter and here, it is absolutely wonderful, adding a background of toastiness that plays happily off the coconut.
The crumb is here is more coarse than banana bread, and less squishy-moist too. There’s a real change in texture from the dark crust to the tender center that makes this bread excellent toasted with a pat of butter and sprinkling of powdered sugar. This salted honey brown butter spread would be excellent here too.
Despite the volume of sugar here (I admit, I was convinced it would be overkill) this bread is not very sweet. If you would like a less sweet bread, you can use unsweetened coconut, which usually comes dried. The original recipe didn’t call for salt, and I think this and all breads, really need salt so I added 1/4 teaspoon table salt but I think one could easily take the amount up to 1/2 teaspoon.
This loaf, once baked, entirely filled and towered above my 9x5x3 (8-cup) loaf pan, so if yours is smaller, you might want to pour off a little batter into greased muffin tins.
Tumblr media
2 large eggs 1 1/4 cups (295 ml) milk 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups (315 grams) all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon table salt (see Note) 2 teaspoons (10 grams) baking powder 1 to 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (Bill calls for 2 but I preferred 1, so that it didn’t dominate) 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar 5 ounces (140 grams) sweetened flaked coconut (about 1 1/2 cups) 6 tablespoons (85 grams) unsalted butter, melted or melted and browned, if desired Vegetable oil or nonstick cooking spray for baking pan
Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, milk and vanilla.
In a medium bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder and cinnamon. Add sugar and coconut, and stir to mix. Make a well in the center, and pour in egg mixture, then stir wet and dry ingredients together until just combined. Add butter, and stir until just smooth — be careful not to overmix.
Butter and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan, or coat it with a nonstick spray. Spread batter in pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, anywhere from 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Cool in pan five minutes, before turning out onto a cooling rack.
Serve in thick slices, toasted, with butter and confectioners’ sugar or salted honey brown butter spread.
Tumblr media
Salted and Honeyed Brown Butter Spread
1 stick (4 ounces or 113 grams) unsalted butter, divided 1 to 2 tablespoons honey (use less for lightly sweet, more for a more traditional honey butter) Few pinches flaky sea salt
In a small saucepan, melt half your butter over medium heat. Once melted, reduce heat to medium-low. The butter will melt, then foam, then turn clear golden and finally start to turn brown and smell nutty. Stir frequently, scraping up any bits from the bottom as you do. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. While it is cooling, leave the other half of the butter out to soften slightly (semi-firm is fine).
Whip softened butter with an electric mixer until fluffy. Slowly drizzle in the room temperature browned butter, honey and salt continue whipping until combined. Chill butter in fridge until a nice spreadable consistency, or until needed.

It's a good day. I'm in Bangkok Christians Guesshouse. The room is very small, but it's safe and tidy. Fon took me up at ten o'clock. We went to a restaurant in Pakchong for breakfast, where they had Khawkhamoo and I had a bowl of noodles. Before departing, a man informed me that he discovered my dog, Black Burger, in the stable. I was overjoyed, so I went to visit him right away. The man said he came last night, but it was too late to notify me. I gave him 100 baths in exchange for the prize his friend requested. Black Burger was scared of being hungry and alone at night. He has been gone for 7 days. He couldn't stop shaking when I hugged him. When we got home, I offered him a large bowl of rice and chicken, which he ate nearly instantly. Amp came, which shocked me. I did not expect to see him before leaving. Fon and Boy visited Sri Mahamariamman Temple Bangkok (Wat Khaek Silom). She bought me a package of buns for a well-known bakery called A-Ma. The buns were fine, and I preferred the non-sweet stuff, which was made from taro. The kids and I went to eat noodles from a seller on the side road. It was even more excellent than I had expected. Tomorrow, I have an exam at 9.30 a.m. I will drop off the kids at 7 a.m. I am about to read the brief notes before retiring to bed.

How Many types of Microphones are there? What makes them different?
Microphones come in various shapes, sizes, and functionalities, each designed for specific recording purposes. Before talking about the specifics of each microphone type, let’s take a moment to understand the basics.
Dynamic Microphone
First up, we have the mic that’s probably the most recognized by you guys, and it is called the Dynamic microphones. These are rugged and durable microphones that are perfect for live performances and recording loud sound sources like drums and electrical guitar amplifiers.
Tumblr media
Dynamic microphones are reliable, Ideal for live performances and recording loud sound sources like drums and electric guitar amplifiers. These microphones operate on electromagnetic induction that converts sound waves into electrical signals. They are passive, meaning they don’t require external power sources. Dynamic microphones excel at canceling out background noise which make them perfect for noisy environments.
So, if you’re looking for something versatile and you’ll be recording all sorts of sounds, especially loud ones, at home or on stage, then the dynamic mic might be the one for you. Check out the list of Best Dynamic Microphones and know more in detail.
Quality and Features
Dynamic microphones are characterized by lower sensitivity and frequency response compared to other types of microphones.
They feature an extremely high max sound pressure level (SPL), defining their clipping point where audio signals start to distort.
Due to their lower sensitivity, dynamic microphones excel at canceling out background noises in both live performances and recordings.
With the right amount of gain, dynamic microphones perform well in quieter settings, offering versatility in various recording environments.
These microphones are suitable for recording loud sounds, making them ideal for capturing performances on stage or in home studios.
Dynamic microphones are known for their durability and rugged construction, making them suitable for rough handling and on-the-go use.
Condenser Microphone
Next up, we have the condenser mics. These are a little more sensitive, more precise. You guys will see these in a lot of people’s home studio setups. Unlike the dynamic microphone, condenser mics are active, meaning they need to be powered by external or phantom power through USB or through an XLR cable into an audio interface or preamp.
Condenser microphones are more sensitive and precise compared to dynamic microphones.
Quality and Features
Condenser microphones have a lower max SPL rating compared to dynamic microphones, making them more sensitive and capable of capturing a wider frequency range and more detailed sound.
Due to their sensitivity, condenser microphones can pick up sounds like breathing, rattling, and room noise, making them suitable for capturing large, natural tones.
Examples of suitable uses for condenser microphones include recording acoustic instruments such as guitar, bass, piano, and vocals.
However, users need to be cautious as the lower max SPL rating means signals can distort easily, particularly when recording loud sources like drum kits or guitar amps.
There are two main types of condenser microphones: large diaphragm and small diaphragm.
Large Diaphragm Condenser
Large diaphragm condensers are great for recording vocals. They’re great for recording anything that has a lot of nuance or dynamic range.
you want to make sure you use a pop filter. And the reason you want to put a pop filter in front is one, it helps with the plosives, you know, you don’t get the puff which will, when the air hits the capsule, it’ll cause some low frequencies. But the other reason is, you know, the moisture from the breath will get on the capsule and over time, you can ruin a capsule by doing it. Another quick tip if you’re recording vocals, this is nothing to do with the microphone really, but if you stick the microphone a little bit higher than the singer, they’ll tilt their head up and they might actually project more. So that’s just something to know.
Small Diaphragm Condenser
Small diaphragm microphones, often overshadowed by their larger counterparts, are nonetheless indispensable tools in the arsenal of recording engineers and musicians. One of the primary benefits of small diaphragm microphones is their exceptional transient response. Due to the reduced mass of the diaphragm, these microphones excel at capturing the rapid changes in sound intensity, making them ideal for recording instruments with sharp attacks such as acoustic guitars, percussion, and string instruments. The ability to faithfully reproduce fast transients ensures that the nuances and dynamics of the performance are accurately captured which results in a more natural and detailed sound.
Furthermore, small diaphragm microphones exhibit a wider frequency response compared to their larger counterparts. This extended frequency range allows them to capture both the delicate high frequencies and the robust low frequencies with precision, making them great tools for capturing a wide variety of instruments and sound sources.
Ribbon Microphone
Ribbon microphones are revered for their warm and smooth sound, making them popular choices for recording vocals, strings, brass, and woodwinds. These microphones use a thin metal ribbon to capture sound waves and are known for their natural sound quality.
Tumblr media
Ribbon microphones are often used for recording vocals, strings, brass, and woodwinds. Ribbon mics are probably the most natural-sounding mics. They are so beautiful; they add ambience to your sound, and the natural high-frequency roll-off cuts off a lot of the harsh tones like dynamic microphones. Most ribbon microphones are passive, meaning they don’t require an external phantom power supply.
Cardioid Polar Pattern
Cardioid microphones are most sensitive to sound coming from the front and reject sound from the sides and rear. They are ideal for capturing vocals and solo instruments while minimizing background noise.
Cardioid Polar Pattern:
Heart-shaped pickup pattern.
Most sensitive to sound from the front and rejects sound from the sides and rear.
Ideal for vocals and solo instruments, focusing on a single sound source and rejecting background noise.
Suitable for environments with noise and reverberation.
Who Should Choose Cardioid Microphones?
If you’re recording vocals or solo instruments in noisy environments or untreated rooms, a cardioid microphone is your best ally. Its directional sensitivity ensures that only the intended sound source is captured, making it perfect for studio recording and live performances.
Omnidirectional Polar Pattern
Omnidirectional microphones capture sound waves from all directions equally, making them perfect for recording groups of people and ambient sounds. They excel in acoustically treated environments where natural recordings are desired.
Omnidirectional Polar Pattern:
Captures sound waves from all directions equally.
Perfect for recording groups of people and ambient sounds.
Useful in acoustically treated environments for natural recordings.
Who Should Choose Omnidirectional Microphones?
If you’re recording interviews, podcasts, or natural ambient sounds, an omnidirectional microphone is the way to go. Its ability to capture sound from all directions ensures a lifelike recording experience, making it an essential tool for content creators and audio enthusiasts.
Figure-of-Eight Polar Pattern
Figure-of-eight microphones capture sound from the front and back while rejecting sound from the sides. They are perfect for capturing stereo images and recording instruments facing each other.
Figure-of-Eight Polar Pattern:
Captures sound from the front and back but rejects sound from the sides.
Ideal for capturing stereo images, such as duets or instruments facing each other.
Useful for capturing room sound.
Who Should Choose Figure-of-Eight Microphones?
If you’re recording duets, stereo instruments, or capturing room ambiance, a figure-of-eight microphone is your go-to choice. Its ability to capture sound from multiple directions makes it a versatile tool for achieving immersive recordings.
I have discussed more features and my research in my full on on Types of Microphones.

The Cheapest and Simplest Audiophile Headphone Amp
Tumblr media
This small amplifier finds its use not only with headphones for listening to your favorite tunes in good quality or for playing the electric guitar without causing any annoyance to your close ones.
It can also amplify line-level audio if any of your audio system components have too low sensitivity or output levels.
Our amplifier also has a low output impedance and a reasonably high input impedance—50 kilo-ohms. So, the amplifier serves dual purposes as a buffer with gain and as a power amplifier for headphones.
The design is inexpensive and quite compact, so it can be used in almost any project. The bipolar power supply is not required; any stabilized power source or 12 to 18-volt battery is sufficient.
This amplifier has a linear stereo input, not a Hi-Z instrumental input, for connecting an electric guitar. Therefore, if you play the guitar, you will need an additional preamp.
Headphone amplifiers are assembled using transistors, tubes, and microchips. The tubes add a pleasant warmth to the sound by adding even harmonics to the signal. We have already looked into this in a post on the DIY tube amplifier.
Tumblr media
That sweet little amplifier is an excellent buffer for a hi-fi audio system. It can happily work with an electric guitar. But its output power is not enough for headphones. (Yet it can be an excellent preamp for our headphone amp today.) A tube amplifier needs to be powered with an AC transformer, which is not a portable solution.
Discrete transistor amplifiers can be decent, but they contain many elements. They need to be carefully configured, pairs of transistors with the same parameters must be picked, and a large quantity of high-quality capacitors must be used.
Some audiophiles say the best sound is created only with special carbon-fiber resistors. If the influence of the design and materials of capacitors on the quality of sound reproduction is objectively proven and has been measured, valuable parameters for resistors, from a technical standpoint, are accuracy and temperature stability. Metal film resistors are primary candidates, as they are known for this feature.
Tumblr media
If you didn't already know, low-power carbon resistors are usually beige (modern film) and brown (vintage composite), and metal film resistors are often blue. But there are many exceptions.
Be that as it may, music is for pleasure. Music is an art, and this applies not only to composing and performing but also to playing back, listening, and making musical instruments and equipment. Therefore, subjective opinions and feelings must be respected because music is just about them. And the components should fit the person who creates the amplifier and the person who will listen to it.
Any way you approach it, creating transistor and tube amplifiers costs money and time, takes up space, requires skills, and sometimes requires special equipment for adjustment. Integrated circuits make everything much more compact, accessible, and simpler.
And if we talk chips for audio processing, first, we need to discuss operational amplifiers.
By the way, LM386 is an op-amp, too, designed to work with a loudspeaker or a headphone. I'm sure you've already used LM386 on your devices. Clearly, it is not at all an amplifier for high-quality sound reproduction through headphones or a small speaker.
Although, oddly enough, with a large 12-inch guitar speaker (not the 80-watt Celestion Seventy 80, better something like a 25-watt Greenback), the LM386 can sound very good in the room, it has just enough volume to be used as a bedroom amplifier.
Tumblr media
But guitar amplification is a totally separate thing. You need to amplify specific guitar frequencies; the LM386 can handle this fine. And when you need to reproduce with high fidelity the sound of an entire orchestra, a rock band, or birds chirping in the forest, you'll need something bigger.
So, we will use NE5532.
The best op amp for audio
"There is probably no music on the planet that has not passed through a hundred or more 5532s on its way to the consumer." Douglas Self, British electronics engineer.
Tumblr media
Please do not confuse NE5532 for NE532. The NE532 is just a complete analog of the good old LM358, developed in 1972 as an industry standard for operational amplifiers.
Surprisingly, the LM358 circuitry is built into many other integrated circuits. For example, the TL494 PWM controller contains two error amplifiers constructed according to the LM358 diagram.
We often use the LM358, sometimes even for audio processing, but in most cases, we still prefer the TL072 and NE5532. Why is that? This is precisely what we will talk about today.
NE5532 are considered operational amplifiers for enthusiasts, and rightfully so, one can find them in even the most expensive and prestigious audio equipment. From 1979 to 2007, that is, for 28 years, NE5532 was unattainable—the best in class! And then LM4562 came along.
There are several more expensive and more advanced operational amplifiers for audio, including those assembled on a printed circuit board from discrete components rather than an integrated chip design. After all, progress never stops, and there is no limit to perfection.
In fact, in the vast majority of cases, the characteristics of the NE5532 are more than sufficient for high-quality audio signal processing. This is confirmed by its application in various professional music and sound recording equipment and household high-fidelity audio systems.
This is all thanks to the fact that the NE5532 has very low noise, extremely low harmonic distortion (THD) with an appropriate switching circuit, and, very significantly, a high slew rate. It is equal to 9 V/uS versus 0.3 9 V/uS for the LM358.
It would seem that even LM358 has a gain bandwidth of 1 MHz (according to datasheets from different manufacturers, from 700 to 1200 kHz). However, gain bandwidth does not mean the effective gain band but just the frequency at which the unity gain is preserved.

When the voltage is amplified by +20 decibels, i.e., 10 times, the LM358's gain begins to decline already at a 10 kHz frequency. In contrast, for the NE5532, this frequency is 200 kHz.

Why does an audio signal need wide bandwidth anyway? An average human cannot hear sounds with a pitch above 20 kHz. Besides frequency, the attack of sound matters. The wave's shape matters, too, and to avoid distorting it, you need a bandwidth 10 times wider.
So, our amplifier is called "47" and consists of two identical channels - left and right. Each channel is built on a dual NE5532 operational amplifier. Resistors R1 and R2 divide the supply voltage in half, forming a common virtual ground for both channels.

Op-amp U1A is used in a non-inverting configuration: the input signal is applied to the non-inverting input, and resistors in the feedback loop set the gain from the output to the inverting input.
In our case, the coefficient equals (4.7 + 10) / 4.7 = 3.13, 9.9 dB.
Operational amplifier U1B is connected as a repeater with unity gain and simply doubles the channel output current. Resistors R8 and R9 limit the current to protect the headphones and amplifier.
The second channel is assembled according to the same diagram as the first one on a separate U2 chip. If you don't need a second channel, you can build just one using one chip.

This amp sounds very clean. Unlike guitar equipment, it does not alter the sound but simply reproduces the input signal with high quality.
So, high fidelity is not always difficult and expensive. Sometimes, you can achieve excellent results simply by finding a suitable scheme.
