Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (but let’s make it both a greek tragedy and a feminist triumph)

SPOILER WARNING

So I watched THAT infamous Netflix Eurovision movie, and surprisingly it was alright. But Lars Erricksong (Will Ferrell) is and will remain the biggest man-child. He needs to grow up and I want him to feel the consequences of his actions. Also Sigrit CARRIES Fire Saga, I want her to finally get her moment of recognition that they built to throughout the entire film but never quite pay off. So let’s re-write the ending of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Let’s pretend that Lars doesn’t hear about the qualification in time. 

He stumbles off the fishing boat in the evening. He follows the fishermen’s daily pilgrimage to the bar. He sits there, his head down, an almost untouched pint in front of him. In the background, someone asks the bartender to turn over the Eurovision.

The bar goes wild. He looks up and there, on the tv in the bar, is Sigrit.

Sigrit announces that with her band partner gone it’s impossible for her to sing Fire Saga’s orginal song. So she decides to sing a different song anyway, knowing it will get her disqualified

Sigrit sings Husavik, a song she wrote alone and it completely hers. She pours all of her anger and loneliness and love for her little town into her voice and her song. The crowd goes wild. Jon Ola Sand, wiping his eyes, makes the decision not to disqualify her. 

Sigrit Ericksdottir wins the Eurovision Song Contest. She has the instant ear of every record company in Europe. She even manages to break through onto the American market. It’s a lot of fame at once for a young girl from a little town in Iceland, but she has her good friends, Mita and Alexander to support her.

Many years later, Sigrit returns to Husavik and on the pier, she spots Lars, who with Sigrit gone, has adopted her little class of music students. She watches as they finish singing an acoustic version of Husavik. He tells them that if they’re patient and loving and tenacious, they too could grow up to win the Eurovision Song Contest and follow their dreams, just like Sigrit Ericksdottir.  

Lars looks up, spotting Sigrit watching him on the pier. The two look at each other, before running to greet each other, sharing a long hug. Music swells, we get a shot of the mountains and landscape of Husavik. Cut to black.

Lemtov: Sure, sure.

Sigrit: Okay. Uh.. Are you gay?

Lemtov: hehe.. What? No! No, no! Of course not. I am Russian.

Sigrit: No?

Lemtov: There're no gay people in Russia.

Sigrit: Statistically speaking, I think that's impossible.

me, sitting here, realising that lars’ dad is called ‘erick’ and sigrits’ last name is ‘ericksdóttir’ and lars’ last name is ‘erickssong’, which quite literally translates to ‘ericks DAUGHTER’ and ‘ericks SON’.

maybe those related jokes were real after all...

The subtitles for the Eurovision movie on Netflix were all fucky the other day but I'm not going to argue with the results tbh.

plot twist: the baby looks so frightened because they aren’t actually lars & sigrits real biological baby & was kidnapped from who knows where by the elves & was just delivered to lars & sigrit as a gift. I mean, sigrit did ask them for a baby & they murdered a dude. I doubt abduction would be hard for them.
