Starting to really like the idea of Transformers not understanding a lot of their own technology
And thus only know how to reproduce it but not fully the underlying principles
Not to the extent of Bumblebees voicebox being unreplaceable[ there should be workarounds, dang it.]
But some of their weapons and such.
Because in various revolutions of their history, some deposed rulers are gonna nuke the libraries or such out of spite on their way out.
The idea of them not knowing what sparks are could be funny way to go back to pre-Beastwars takes. They just know that if theres this weird thing in the lasercore that means its working.

The smallest of photovaultic kittens is deposited into Rung's servos. You need an emotional support friend, and Ravage is too big for your lap.
Plop. Kitten, carefully cradled.
Here he’d been reaching up to grab something from the storage shelf above his head, but instead he’s been handed a baby. It’s small, yes— even in Rung’s narrow servos, it looks little, which means to your average mech it must be tiny— but the poor thing may very well be Vector Sigma’s lasercore in the Key’s hands with how obviously, instantly smitten with it he is.
This is a little too much for Rung, all scrambled as he is with his priority tree overwritten by his active forge. He keeps having to blink back tears about it.
Cupping the kitten to his chassis, Rung clears his vocoder and manages a belated and dazed “Soundwave, when did you come in?”

Ficsnippet - “Spare Capacity”
Not something I would usually write, but for once having a quick shot at the “soulmates” trope. AU in which if you’re Cybertronian the name of the person you’re fated to fall in love with is written on the inside of your armour, over your lasercore. They aren’t the only person you can ever truly love or care for, or the only one you could be happy with, but they are the one person you’re guaranteed to irrevocably give your spark to. The catch is that the names aren't always reciprocal...
[Warnings: none, really. Galvatron/Cyclonus/Scourge/Rodimus OT3+1, rated PG]
***
~/Galvatron/~
Hot Rod had been uncomfortable with that name since the moment he saw it, etched in swirling, elegant Old Cybertronian calligraphy across the inside of his chestplate. He hadn't been able to find any record of a mech with that name, but that was a Decepticon name, if ever there was one. A powerful Decepticon's name, at that. He wasn't an expert in Decepticon linguistics, but -tron as a suffix meant literally "individual", one, and it implied the added connotation of and only. You didn't receive that suffix unless you were fated to be a warlord, an emperor, someone who really was someone. It was an intimidating thought, and an intimidating name.
Add that to the uncomfortable oddity of his spark's settling process having somehow caused his decorative arm-mounted exhaust pipes to evolve into laser guns, and Hot Rod was left with a lot of dark thoughts in his processor. Was he fated to be history's worst Autobot, cursed with natural weaponry and doomed to fall for a Decepticon warlord? Was he designed to become a traitor to his people whether he meant to or not?
He overcompensated, not wanting anyone to doubt him, not wanting to doubt himself. He was the first to charge in to a fight, the first to shout insults and dares, the first to jump forward when Optimus Prime said this will be dangerous, I want a volunteer. He covered the engraving with the mica paint that was traditional if you didn't want your spark name revealed by chance.
And he used those discomfiting lasers to shoot anything with a purple badge on it, earning himself a mixture of commendations and cautions from the older Autobots who thought his processors just ran a bit too hot. He never tried to argue with their assessments. It was better to be scolded now and again than to have them think worse of him by far.
Sometimes, late in the off-shift when a comfortable descent into recharge eluded him, he found himself thinking about this mysterious Galvatron. What could a Decepticon - even, especially, a warlord-class one - possibly be like, to make Hot Rod feel like that about him?
And what name would he have written over his spark? Names weren't always mutually matched. The chances of a Decepticon high commander having the name of an ordinary Autobot engraved in his plating were surely nil.
So the one surest chance he had in his life to fall in love, was going to be some stupid, unrequited, destructive crush on an enemy. And Primus knew what it might make him do - fated love made people act in the stupidest ways. He could only lock that thought bitterly in his spark and hope that when it came to it, he'd be able to do the right thing however much it hurt.
***
And then, so much later, after everything...
"Do you three even have spark names? Or is that just a Cybertron thing?"
The Unicronian triad looked at each other, a flickering exchange of smiles, of secrets, of knowing. It was Cyclonus who sat forward and unlatched his chestplate, folding the split pieces open, exposing the pale glow of his lasercore and letting Rodimus lean in to see the script etched inside his heavy armour:
~/Galvatron/~
"In case anyone wasn't expecting that," Scourge said wryly, with a sidelong look at his wingmate. Cyclonus dropped his gaze for a moment at that, but he was smiling.
Rodimus grinned at Scourge. "Let me guess, you too?"
He was surprised when Scourge looked away, seemingly embarrassed. "Actually, no," he said. There was a click as he opened his own armour and turned the panel to show Rodimus what was written there.
~/Cyclonus/~
Cyclonus reached over, smiling, and brushed his fingers over the engraved metal. Scourge leaned into the touch, giving him a grateful look. "Oh," Rodimus breathed.
Spark names didn't have to be reciprocal. But if someone had your name and you didn't have theirs, that didn't mean you couldn't choose them anyway. You could love them even if your destiny didn't say you had to, and that was generally acknowledged as one of the noblest kinds of love there was. And Cyclonus had made that choice for Scourge, made space in his spark for his wingmate despite his own destiny being right there in the form of Galvatron...
Just as Galvatron must have done for me, Rodimus thought. He couldn't imagine any name being written on Galvatron's armour. Surely Galvatron's ability to defy fate altogether had to preclude it. He certainly doesn't have MY name there, whatever he has.
He'd accepted that long before he even knew who "Galvatron" was.
"What about you?" Scourge asked, poking the awkward questioning back towards Rodimus. "What's yours?"
Rodimus smiled wryly at him and opened his own chestplate. The revealed light of the Matrix provoked a wince from all three of his lovers, but he mentally prodded it to behave itself and turned to let them see his fall from grace written into his destiny.
~/Galvatron/~
He felt the ripple of empathy, of approval through all three of their auras at that. Galvatron reached over and gripped his forearm, squeezing possessively, and Rodimus turned his hand to grip and squeeze back. Cyclonus was smiling at him with a fondness that should never have been possible on a mech seeing his own fated one's name written across someone else's spark. Scourge grinned crookedly, and looked completely unsurprised.
"Yeah, I had this coming the whole time," Rodimus said with a sheepish grin, because he had to make light of it somehow or he didn't think he'd be able to cope with the ache of bittersweet happiness in his spark. He looked up at the love of his life, at the mech he'd been afraid of before they ever met and now would die for without a second thought. "Galvatron?" he asked softly. "What about you?"
Galvatron smiled - with a restraint that seemed uncharacteristic for him, but a bright warmth in his optics. The latches of his glacis plate unlocked with a muted thud. He folded the heavy panels open, and Rodimus blinked, briefly dazzled by the red-golden flare of light and heat that burst from behind them.
Inside, though, he flinched at more than just the blaze of Galvatron's Unicron-forged spark. Did he really want to see the final proof that nobody's destiny truly included him?
But he'd dealt with this subject his whole life by diving in headlong. Too late to change. He leaned forward to look.
~/Cyclonus/~ ~/Scourge/~ ~/Hot Rod/~
"...that. That's not possible." His processors were racing so fast he thought for a moment they might crash. "Nobody has more than one spark name. It - it doesn't work like that, it can't..." He trailed off, staring up at Galvatron as something else belatedly sank in. "Hot Rod?"
"I always told you this was never about the damned Matrix!" Galvatron pulled him in closer and Rodimus went, too stunned to do anything but comply. "And why shouldn't I have all your names? There's enough of me to go around!" He laughed, gleeful. Like this total impossibility was something he was proud of.
"...yeah, I guess there is. Whatever you say, Galvatron." I do belong here, he thought. I really do. And if he had to share, well, that wasn't so bad.
Maybe, he thought as both Cyclonus and Scourge shifted in closer like neither of them had ever questioned this whole situation in their lives, it was actually even better.

Rung handles the thick black digits fondling and tapping against the glass plate inset into his chassis with a patience born of millennia. Megatron is only curious, after all; having one’s spark(or lasercore, or other equivalent) practically on display is not exactly...
Advisable.
Or sane, when one was embroiled in a civil war for long enough to destroy roughly 65% of your species.
The little mech whuffs quietly through the vents at the back of his helm, settling his own spindly fingers over Megatron’s.
“I was built with it, as best I can recall. I know I ought to get it covered up, but... I would not be me, I think, without it.”
