summary: y/n’s the only person who can get conrad, and he realizes that maybe he’s been falling for the wrong conklin.
conrad fisher x conklin!reader

a/n: this will likely have a part two, so it probably won’t end here!! no promises as to when pt 2 is out but it will be there eventually ;)) this is literally me wishing i could slap some sense into belly
part two
“hey,” y/n greets, stepping into the beach house and finding conrad unpacking.
“hi,” he smiles lightly. the past few months have been nearly impossible. trying to crack conrad open is like trying to break into a safe. it took y/n forever to be able to understand conrad, and now that she finally did, there was an undeniable spark. she could sense the tension in his mind, knowing that something had set him off. he looked like he just wanted to break down, but he didn’t want to. if he did, he doesn’t know how to put himself back together.
“you ok?” she asks, cautiously. he’s almost like a wild animal, get too close and he runs away. especially since susannah died, he hasn’t been able to find a connection like the one he had with his mother.
“fine,” he mumbles, folding a few blankets onto the couch and placing some pillows beside it.
“conrad, don’t play this game with me again,” y/n sighs, stepping closer to him. he pauses in his movements to look up at her, slapping one last piece of decor on the mantle. “can we at least talk about the exam?”
“i, um,” he stutters, unable to find the right words that have disappeared in his mind. it’s like he completely pushed out the exam, all the other events had forcefully taken the excitement from it. “i feel really good about it, but it’s just an exam.”
y/n can tell in his slumped stance that something is truly disturbing him. he looks broken, and whoever did it certainly failed to put the pieces back together. it appears that they didn’t even try. “talk to me, conrad. please?”
he stops, breaking eye contact. he can’t look at her while he tells her because she can’t see his face when he says it. he doesn’t want y/n to see him crack under the pressure again.
“jeremiah and belly were making out on my car when i came out of testing. i walked out and there they were.”
“what?” y/n spits out, thinking about everything belly had told her before. “i thought she said she moved on-“
“yeah, i did, too,” his voice breaks, still avoiding any looks to y/n. if y/n sees him falling apart over belly, y/n would probably say something. the last thing conrad wants is for belly to know the affect this had on him.
“conrad, you know you can talk to me, right?” she steps closer, wanting to reach out her hand to him but knowing he probably doesn’t want it. he wants belly’s. “anything you say to me won’t get back to her.”
he slightly turns, finally letting his eyes wander up y/n’s body until they meet hers. he’s always found a trust in y/n. she’s been there since they were little kids, but it’s always felt different. there was an innocence to her, she felt like home and he could always run back to her if he needed her. he wouldn’t be able to handle it if he ruined that.
“i’m just so tired, y/n. it’s just one step forward and two steps back. i thought we could finally be over this, but they both just stabbed me in the back. on my car, during my test, in my hoodie. my mom always said belly was destined for me, but it just feels like jere took that.”
y/n can feel the hurt as well as see it on conrad’s face. she’s able to read him so well now that he’s not afraid to open up. she feels like they’ve gotten through a door, a point where they can share secrets and find a safety net in the other. “belly doesn’t deserve you, conrad. she’s not as mature as you, and you can thrive without her, i swear.”
“i’ll be ok, i just need a break from all this shit,” he groans, allowing y/n to finally walk up to him and hold his hand. “i don’t know if we can go back to the way things were after this.”
“i know i can’t change what happened, but i need you to understand that you’re not alone. at this point, you come first to me.” he nods, and y/n can see the sunrise in his face a bit more, but his mind is still covered with darkness. “if you need anything, please call me or come see me, ok?”
“deal,” he cracks a little grin, making y/n smile a bit in return.
“take care of yourself, connie,” she says before opening the front door. she starts the long drive home knowing what’s waiting for her there.
she plants her stuff down on the counter, letting her body relax after the hours behind the wheel. she starts to clean up some of the mess that she left on the counter when she hears squeaky footsteps come down the stairs.
“hey, you’re back already?” belly says, lurking into the kitchen to lean against the frame. y/n doesn’t say anything, she just looks at her and continues to organize everything. “what’s wrong, why do you look like that?”
“honestly, belly, i’m just trying to figure out what to say to you.”
“what do you mean?” belly asks, trying to think about why her older sister could have a reason to be mad at her.
“i stopped at cousins on the way home,” y/n informs her, belly knowing exactly where she left conrad.
“y/n, you can’t be pissed off because of what he told you-“
“no, belly, i have every right to be pissed. i’m pissed for conrad. you left him in the dust and you have no shame about it.”
“it just happened, jeremiah and i. i never wanted to hurt conrad, but im in love!”
“yeah, you were also in love last week with conrad. and the week before with jeremiah. you need to move on from them, bell,” y/n sighs, allowing belly some time to build another response.
“who are you to even say that?”
“because i’ve been there for both of them! i was there for jeremiah when you wanted conrad. i’m there for conrad because you are playing with their hearts like they’re toys. i can tell your hearts not fully in it with jeremiah, but i’m not gonna let you destroy those boys even more.”
“how am i destroying them?”
“belly, wipe that innocence off your face. you’ve managed to rip apart the fisher brothers because you cannot pick which one you like more.”
“but-“
“no, belly! listen to me,” y/n cuts her off before she can try and make anything better. “you couldn’t even contain yourself at susannah’s funeral because you were too worried about conrad. i know we are all grieving, but you are acting like you’re more worried about which brother likes you more. it’s exhausting having to clean up the mess you make over and over again. you’re slowly ruining this bond for me, for steven, for mom! you know i love you more than words, but if you keep playing with their feelings, belly, this family is going to be destroyed.”
“y/n, susannah told me-“
“use susannah as an excuse one more fucking time, belly.” the room goes deadly silent, y/n sick of the excuses and victimized mentality of belly. when steven comes stepping quietly into the room, he ganders softly into the chaotic mess that has formed between his sisters. she swipes her keys back off the table, grabbing an extra bag out of the closet. “i’ll be back.”
“where are you going?” belly says, eyes full of tears from her fear of confrontation. her voice was shaky, and y/n could still feel a sting of guilt in her chest. she hated to build a bigger wall between everyone, but belly had to hear it.
“i’m going to look after conrad, because you failed to do it,” y/n ends their conversation, slamming the front door behind her and moving to the car. she left the house with a terrible tone, but someone else needed her more. belly had jeremiah, taylor, steven, laurel, anyone she wanted. conrad had y/n, and that became enough for him.

SUMMERTIME SADNESS
Jeremiah Fisher x Fem!Reader
Tumblr media
(Summary: ~ Think I'll miss you forever. Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky ~
No place in the world ever felt more like home to Y/n Rowe than Cousins beach. Sure it was a beautiful place, but it was more to do with the people. Her and her mother spent every summer since she was brought home with the Fishers and the Conklins. It was her favorite time of year.
But this year felt different. Everything felt more intense. She was finally comfortable in her skin. And that meant maybe, just maybe, Jeremiah Fisher might actually notice her.)
(Warnings: none for this chapter besides some underage drinking and insecure thoughts)

Chapter 1:
I loved cousins beach. Maybe even more than home. But then again it never feels quite like home without the fishers and the conklins. Me and my mother have been staying with them at cousins beach since before I could remember. It was my favorite part of the year. It suck’s being so far from your best friends. So the months between June and august we have to make the most of it. Me and belly would call sporadically throughout the school year but the weeks leading up to cousins whe faced times every single night. Planning outfits and talking about what we would do all summer.
And well, the fisher boys. It was painfully obvious how much belly liked Conrad. I remember the day I squeezed the information out of her. Literally. We were in her room two summers ago and it was late. We had been messing around playing dress up in some clothes I stole from my mom when I bring it up.
“Belly I swear I know who you like.”
“No you don’t.” She says looking in the floor length mirror giggling.
“Yes I do.” I say jumping to her shoulders with a hug. She squealed
As we fell to the bed.
“Who then?” She laughs squinting her eyes.
“CONRA-“ I say loudly before she puts her hands over my mouth.
“STOP! Be quiet.” She whispers eyeing the door hoping the boy didn’t her me from down the hall.
“I knew it.” I say muffled from under her fingers. I wrap my arms around her squeezing her in a big hug causing her to let my mouth go.
“That’s so cute! I knew it!” I smile. She just rolls her eyes with a big blush across her cheeks.
“Fine, fine. I like conrad. But you can’t tell anyone.” She said looking me dead in the eyes.
“Pinky promise.” I grin softly.
“Pinky promise.” She says wrapping hers around mine.
“Plus I promise not to tell anyone you like Jeremiah.” She giggles causing a loud gasp to leave my lips.
Sitting in the car on the way to cousins always brings up memories like that. Maybe it’s the nerves that get built up to see him. Would he notice me that way this summer? Did he look better than the year before? It always clouded my mind on the road there. But then we would hit this place in the road where you could smell the sea so strong it would all fade away. And the excitement would flow back in.
We finally pull up to the house and I see Jeremiah and a soaking wet belly run out the door.
“Y/n!” Belly yells jumping into my arms. Getting me slightly wet in the process.
“Hi bells.” I muse with a wide smile.
“I missed the belly flop didn’t I?” I laugh and Jeremiah chuckles walking up to us.
“Oh yeah you did. But this time she got Conrad back.” He says and belly moves to the side letting him get a hug in.
“Missed you n/n.” He says squeezing me tight spinning us around.
“I missed you too Jere.” I say letting go. The feeling on his hands moving themselves from my waist to his sides making my cheeks heat up. Belly just smiles knowingly and then they both greet my mom, helping her with her bags. I start to get mine out when Susannah, Laurel, Steven, and Conrad walk outside.
“My beautiful girl. Look at you!” Susannah smiles as she walks up to me pilling me up in a warm hug. Sometimes the only thing in the world that can make me feel better is a hug from Susannah. She has this was of making you believe everything will be okay.
“I missed you so much.” I say holding her tight.
“My turn, my turn!” Laurel says and Susannah lets her get a hug.
“Ugh I’m so excited to be here with you guys.” I say and she pulls away fixing my hair.
“It’s so good to see you.” She smiles and they both turn to my mom. They all smile and embrace each other. It makes me wonder if us kids will be like them when we’re older. But I’m brought out of thought when I feel a hand aggressively messing up my hair.
“Hi Steven.” I say rolling my eyes.
“You know I’m gonna get pay back for last summer right.” He says with a glare that doesn’t reach the giant smile on his lips.
“Oh yeah I bet.” I smirk. Every summer me and Steven have a little prank war. Last year me and belly stole all of his clothes while he was in the shower and dumped them in the pool. The moms made us do laundry for a week after. But it was worth it.
He goes to say hi to my mom and Conrad comes up.
“You got taller.” He smiles.
“You didn’t.” I say smiling back causing him to laugh.
“Yeah yeah okay, I’m gonna got say hi to the nicer Rowe, before I’m all Rowe-ed out for the day.” He jokes and belly comes up to me.
“Let’s get your bags inside. I wanna get you all unpacked so we can hang out.” She says dragging me to the trunk of the car. We grab everything and head up to my room.
The light blue patterned wallpaper brings this sensation of calm everyone I walk in. It feels serene. My room back home is covered in posters, but here, here was a clean slate for my mind to breathe in every year.
Belly puts my bags on the bed and I open them up starting to unpack my clothes her putting away my makeup stuff.
“God I love all your makeup stuff it’s so pretty. I need to get better at it before I can go all out like this.” She smiles as I put a few shirts in the drawer.
“I’ll teach you don’t worry. Plus you’re so beautiful already makeup for you should just be fun.” I remark. She looks up at me with a blush.
“You’re just saying that.” She scoffs.
“No I’m serious bells. You’ve always had beauty don’t get me wrong, but you had a glow up this year.” I reassure and her smile grows.
“Well you’ve gotten more beautiful too. You just seem so comfortable in your skin this summer.” She says back. Nudging me with her hip.
I just thank her. She was half right. I definitely feel more confident in my self. But I’ll always feel insecure in this town. All the pretty girls on the beach will never fail to make me self conscious about what should be my so called ‘bikini body’. Or not being able to wear makeup to the beach when I’m having a breakout. But I’ve learned to ignore those thoughts as well as I can.
I’m a year older than belly. And I always feel like I have to hide those thoughts from her. Be a good example. She doesn’t need to find insecurities in herself because I’m complaining about mine.
“Hey let’s go to my room real quick I want to change out of these wet clothes.” She giggles pulling me out of thought.
“Oh yeah duh, let’s go.” I smile. “I wanna pick out your outfit though.” I smirk and she sighs.
“You’re so extra about this stuff.” She complains and I just laugh.
“I got a passion for fashion, what can I say.”
“Did you just quote bratz.” She giggles as I go through her drawers.
“And what if I did.” I smirk.
“You’re so-“ she starts to say when the door slams open.
“Hello ladies.” Jeremiah says jumping on belly’s bed.
“She could have been changing you dork.” I say throwing a pillow at him.
“You guys always lock the door when you change. I know you.” He says throwing the pillow.
“But anyways both of you do need to change. I’ve been waiting all day to go to the beach with you guys.”
“I- uh, told my mom me and y/n would go to whale of a tale.” She says and Jeremiah grabs junior mint making a sad face.”
“Please come swimming with me.” He says in this stupid baby voice.
“-I think she can go by herself.” Belly says and me and Jere share a big smile.
“YAY!” He exclaims getting up off the bed. He grabs my wrist pulling me to my room. Before I can say he shuts the door with me in it.
“Both of you go change!” He says and runs downstairs.
I pull out a bathing suit and head downstairs with my towel meeting Jere and belling in the back.
“Ready?” I ask and he turns to me. God his eyes were blue. They had a tack for making me forget what I was thinking about when I started speaking to him. They both say yes and we start walking but the whole walk all I could think of was how he got tanner this summer. And his hair looked fluffier than last. He had gotten taller too. He had to look down a little to make eye contacts. Which made my heart flutter.
“Hey. Did you know my dad's coming up for the Fourth?” Says belly making us look at her.
“Cool.” Jeremiah smiles.
“Yeah that’s great.” I say doing the same.
“Don't you think it's weird?” She asks.
“Not really. I love your dad.” Jere adds.
“Yeah, but they've only been divorced for, like, a year and a half.” She sighs.
“Well, that's what's so cool about your mom, you know? She just doesn't give a shit.” He says.
“Exactly. She doesn't give a sh¡t because she's the one who wanted the divorce in the first place.” She continues.
“Forever grateful I’m adopted. I never have to deal with men. It sounds exhausting.” I giggle and they both join in.
“I think if you don't want to be married, you just shouldn't be married.” Jere says and I nod.
“It’s better for everyone involved.”
“Well, tell that to my grandma. She basically collapsed when my mom told her. Did you know my dad has a new girlfriend already?” She chuckles.
“Well, what about your mom? Is she dating anybody?” Jere asks.
“No. Oh, and he has a beard now.” She laughs.
“Oh yeah?” I say.
“Your dad has a beard?” Jere says with a confused face.
“Yeah. He thinks it makes him look cool.” She sighs.
“Well, does it?” I ask.
“Kind of.” She snorts.
“I've waited all year for this.” I say loudly as we get to the water.
“You want to race?” Jere asks us.
“No, no, I can't, you...” belly starts to say then runs towards the water leaving us behind.
“Oh that is just not fair.” I say and start running too.
“Oh, come on. Wait up!” Jere yells and chases us. He quickly catches up to me grabbing me and spinning me around.
“If I can’t be first I’ll be second.” He smiles. “SORRY N/N” he continues and bolts for the water. I just kinda stand there for a second in a daze. The heat from his body goes just as quickly as it came leaving me in shock. I’ve always had a crush on the younger fisher brother. But for some reasons this year it felt stronger. Maybe it’s because I finally feel pretty enough in my own skin. Maybe he’ll notice me.
Jeremiah fisher is the biggest flirt in cousins. He’s had multiple summer flings for the past few years. But I don’t want to be that. I don’t want to be someone he forgets about in the fall. And maybe being friends is the only way that can happen. But a girl can dream.
We all head back to the house for dinner. Getting changed into dry clothes and seated at the table.
“Steven, I swear to God, if you look at that phone one more time, I'm putting it in the screen basket.” Laurel says scolding her oldest child.
“It's just, we want to see your beautiful faces. Can dinner be a screen-free zone? You know, like the olden days.” Susannah smiles with a small chuckle at her own joke.
“Steven.” Laurel repeats. Jeremiah takes his phone from his hands and throws it into the basket.
“Dude, are you kidding me?” Steven exclaims.
“Boom! Nailed it.” Jere says flexing.
“Okay, okay, okay, we get it, you've been working out.” Steven complains.
“Oh, you're just jealous because Jere has a better body than you.” I say nonchalant but quickly look up to see Jere looking at me with a pleasantly surprised look on his face.
“Thank you n/n. You’re pretty bodacious yourself.” He says quoting ‘bill and teds excellent adventure.’ I made him watch it with me last year and he hasn’t stopped sending me stupid texts quoting it since. I just roll my eyes with a small smile, saying thank you.
“Uh, no, actually, it's all about the lean look now. Otherwise, you can't wear tailored suits.” Steven defends.
“Sure, sure.” Belly says.
“Tailored suits.” Conrad laughs.
“When are you leaving for training camp, man?” Steven asks him.
“Uh, he quit football.” Jere says.
“Wh... Wait, really? You quit?” Steven asks.
“Mm-hmm.”
“Are you kidding me, man? I'd-I'd kill to play college ball.” Steven continues.
“He can always change his mind.” Susannah butts in.
“I'm not gonna change my mind. I was just gonna sit on the bench all season anyways.” Conrad says getting annoyed.
“Well, if you're not playing football anymore, what are you gonna do all summer?” Belly asks.
“Oh, dude, you can work at the club. with me and Jere.” Steven says.
“Yeah. I'm not gonna work at the club.” Conrad scoffs.
“Wait, you guys are working this summer?” I ask.
“Yeah, I'm lifeguarding, and Steven's working at the snack shop.” Jere says doing a lil hand shake with Steven.
“Oh, Belly, Y/n, I almost forgot. I have a surprise for you.” Susannah says taking out two white invitations.
“So, this is why you had to stop by the country club.” My mom says. And Laurel shakes her head.
“I wrangled Belly and y/n an invitation to be a debutante.” Susannah exclaims.
“Is that the thing where the girls wear white dresses and curtsy?” Belly asks.
“It's when a girl comes of age and is presented to society. I-I know it sounds silly, but I swear it's fun. Girls come from all over New England to Cousins just to be a part of it. You'll make so many new friends.” Susannah defends.
“I cannot believe you are still holding on to this archaic dream.” My mom laughs.
“No, it used to be about finding a husband, but now it's about networking. They teach you leadership skills, like how to market yourself, and it benefits charity. It's, um, like a bat mitzvah.” Susannah continues.
“It is not like a bat mitzvah. There is nothing religious about a debutante ball.” Laurel scoffs.
“The whole deb scene is bullshit. It's for sheep.” Conrad says.
“No, it's not. It's when a girl has a coming out, it's a formal recognition she's reached maturity.” Susannah continues.
“Oh, sorry. I'm sorry. Mature?” Steven says surprised.
“Yes.”
“Belly and Y/n?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“A-a couple months ago you had a cat funeral. You made us all wear black.” Steven exclaims flabbergasted.
“Shut up, Steven. I saw you crying in your room.” Belly recoils.
“Wait, Mochi died? Dang. I'm sorry, Bells.” Jere says a sympathetic expression taking his features.
“Girls. Don't you want to get all dressed up?” Susannah asks hopeful.
“It's just not Belly's kind of thing. She's our feral little alley cat.” Laurel says. My mom already knows I’ll say yes. I like dressing up. Meeting new people isn’t my favorite thing but if it’s with belly I’ll do it.
Belly looks to me and I smile softly causing her to do the same and look back to Susannah.
“I'll think about it.” She says.
“She'll think about it.” Says Susannah to Laurel happily.
We finish up dinner and I head up to my room. After a few minutes I hear a knock at my door. Jere cracks it open and I invite him in.
“Hey, there’s a bonfire tonight. I already asked your mom and she said you could go. Get dressed.” He says flopping down on my bed next to me.
“What my pajamas aren’t bonfire ready enough for you.” I say turning to him.
“They are, but I know you. Go pick out a cute little outfit. And let’s go.” He says booping my nose and walking out of my room.
Sometimes I hate how right he is.
I pick out a dress and put on my leather jacket. It gets cold at the beach during the night. I slide on my shoes and head to the door to the back yard.
“Ooo y/n give us a twirl.” Jeremiah says with a smile as I walk up and I laugh doing a small 360 for him and Steven.
“Okay let’s go!” Steven says and we walk out the back door.
“First bonfire of the summer!” jere says loudly.
“All right, we're totally taking my car. You're not driving.” Jere says pointing to steven.
“Come on, man, we're leaving. You ready?” Steven says to Conrad who is sitting at the edge of the pool talking to belly.
“Can I come, too?” She asks.
“Uh, no. The moms are getting everything set up for your movie night.” Steven says.
“See you. Let's go, slowpoke. Have fun with the moms!” Jere says.
“Hey why can’t belly come?” I ask but the boys start walking away.
“Come on y/n.” They say not stopping.
“I’m sorry. I’ll take you out a different night. Just us girls.” I say to belly heading to the car.
We get to the bonfire and I thought I would be hanging out with them but they all dispersed and left me alone. Steven is flirting with this girl and Conrad is already making out with someone. Jere has a group of like four people fawning over his attention. I’m not a big drinker so I just kinda chill by the fire. Till I decide to go walk closer to the water. I needed to get the sight of Jeremiah flirting with other people out of my head.
I loved the ocean. Well. To be honest I loved the shore. The part of the water that you can still see your feet in when you look down.
The first time I realized I liked Jeremiah we were sitting on the shore. We were 12 and we sat covered in wet sand digging for sand crabs. He had found one and told me to put my hands out. He put it and a small pile of sand onto my palms and put his forehead to mine to block the sun. We sat there and watched it dig around. Legs crisscross and knees together. His eyes met mine for a second and he had the biggest smile of his face. That was the first moment I understood what people meant when they said they got butterflies in their stomachs.
I shook the memory out of my head and started walking back to the bonfire. It was getting too cold. When I got there though I saw belly. And she was talking with some guy. They looked cute together so I just left them alone. Till I hear Conrad fighting with some guy.
“What's your problem, man?”
“It's one beer. It's a party. Relax.”
“No, give me my beer back. I paid for this.”
“Stop, stop. You're drunk. Just give him the beer.” The girl Conrad was with says.
“Maybe you should listen to your lady.”
“Stop. You're drunk.”
“No. I'm fine. I'm fine. Give me the beer back.” Conrad argues.
“You guys, you guys, you guys.” Belly says walking up to them just as it’s about to get physical. She gets elbowed in the face by the guy Conrad was arguing with.
“Belly.” Conrad says concerned.
“Guys. What the hell.” I say running to help belly up.
“What the fսck is wrong with you?” Conrad says to the guy.
“Are you okay?” Jere says coming up to belly.
“Come on, big man, come on.“ the guy says still egging Conrad on.
“Quit being a dick.” I yell at the guy.
“COPS!” Some kid yells and lights start flashing. We all run to the jeep and climb in. I look around and notice I dropped my phone.
“Fuck I lost my phone I’ll be right back.” I say.
“I’ll help you look.” Jere says.
We trace back our steps and find it.
“Shit this thing is gonna be full of sand for weeks.” I complain and he laughs.
“It’ll be fine don’t worry about it- hey is that Steven?” He asks and we look over.
“Steven hurry up!” I yell and he runs over.
“Sorry I was saying goodbye.”
“Oooh Steven got a girlfriend-“ I start to say goofing around with him till we get to the jeep and see the cops talking to belly and Conrad. Fuck.
We get escorted home and Laurel takes care of it.
“Officers, thank you. It won't happen again, I can promise you that much.”she says.
“Tell Mr. Fisher the chief wants to set up a tee time when he gets back in town.” The officer says.
“Absolutely. Sorry again for all the trouble. Have a good night, Officers.” Laurel says and shuts the door turning to us with disappointed look.
“How could you guys be so irresponsible?”
“Mom, it wasn't a big deal. All right?” Belly says.
“Seriously. The cops were just looking to break up the bonfire.” Steven says.
“Not a big deal? Yes. I would say getting picked up by the cops for underage drinking is a pretty big deal, Steven.” She says letting out a scoff.
“Were-were you guys, you guys smoking tonight?” Conrad asks and my jaw drops. Why is he being such a douchebag.
“What? Keep your voice down. Susannah and Kate are asleep on the couch.” Laurel says panicked.
“Well, I wasn't yelling.” He continues.
“Well, you-you-you were.”
“Just so you know, Laurel, I-I didn't drink tonight. I was the DD, I swear.” Jere reassured her. But she doesn’t care.
“You're the oldest. What the hell's gotten into you?” She says to Conrad.
“And when did you leave the house without telling anybody? And what in the world are you wearing?” She says looking to belly.
“It's Taylor's. And why am I the only one who's not allowed to go out?” She asks.
“It's not that you're not allowed, it's that you should have told us you were going. How did you even get there?” Laur says concerned.
“I walked.”
“Jesus. You know better than to walk that far down the beach alone late at night.”
“Can you stop treating me like a kid?” Belly pleads.
“If you want to be treated like an adult, you need to act like one.”
“Then maybe you guys should, too.” Conrad says digging himself in deeper.
“What does that mean? I hope you realize this night could have ended a lot differently if your family wasn't your family.” She says to the boys.
“We're sorry, Laur.” I say.
“Just... go to bed, guys.” She says sighing and we all walk upstairs.
Im about to get ready for bed when I feel arms wrap around me from the back.
“Jere go to bed.” I say shaking my head.
“Im so happy you’re here.” He says letting go and I smile.
“Why.”
“Cause me and you are doing another movie night soon.” He says.
“Oh yeah?” I questions.
“Yeah and it’s my turn to pick.” He says. “Be prepared to be stollen from belly one of these nights.” He continues and leaves the room only to crack the door open one last time.
“Good night n/n.”
“Good night Jere.” I say and he shuts the door.
I get ready for bed and climb under the covers. As I’m falling asleep all I can think about is his arms wrapped around me.
This summer was going to be great.

August
Jeremiah Fisher x Conklin Sibling
*moments of months with Jeremiah until next Summer -takes place between the first and second seasons*
.Neither of you wanted to leave Cousins -obviously
.But especially now that he'd finally asked you to be his girlfriend
.It had been years of pining and tiptoeing around your younger sisters feelings, but it had finally happened.
.On the boardwalk -of course
The August air had been thick with humidity that night, the occasional Atlantic breeze holding the promise of rain welcomed you as you walked towards the end of the boardwalk.
Jeremiah was never this quiet
"You're not thinking of throwing me off here are you Jere?" you gave him a small push
"Thought about it" he said, with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes
He'd stopped walking then, grabbing your hand and pulling you towards him. You stood a foot away from each other
"Whats wrong?" you asked, looking up at him with concern
"You"
"Very funny Jere" the concern on your face grew into a grin
"I'm not laughing y/n" he stated, he'd stared straight faced
"Okay.. then what's wrong?"
"What's wrong is how you can't see how I've been bending over backwards all summer, trying to get you to see how much I'm in love with you"
Your face dropped, mirroring the seriousness in his
"Must have missed that while you were all over Belly" you said
Hurt stung, it made his face crinkle up and now his, was a reflection of yours.
"I'm sorry, I should have realized it was never Belly, it was always you, it was just easier with Belly" he said
You scoffed at him
"I could never tell where I stood with you" he exclaimed
"Right, like my sister wasn't the poster child for indecision this summer"
"You never seemed interested, you never noticed" he said softly, his blue eyes darkened by the night, but you could still see the shimmers of hopeful uncertainty swim between them
"How could I be Jere, when she wanted you both"
Silence had settled over the two of you. Nothing existed in that moment but you and Jere and the desperation you both felt to understand and be understood
Thunder rumbled above, the clouds shifting onto colder seasons, but neither of you moved, the soft droplets of summers first rain pattered against your skin, you watched as it left dew drops on the tips of Jeremiah's eyelashes and the bow of his lips
"You're wrong, I did notice, I've always noticed you Jere, I have since we were five and hid in Susannah's closet eating the good muffins, and twelve when you helped me catch my first wave and fifteen when you picked a fight with my deb escort" you whispered
Jeremiah cupped your face in his hand, his thumb tracing the curves of your lips "I'm so sorry I treated this like a game for so long"
You gave his thumb and little peck and smiled at him and he couldn't help but smile back
"Guess we both lost huh" you said taking his hand in yours and turning to walk back to the fair and back to the summer house, not wanting to get stuck in the rain
He stopped you again, pulling you even closer this time.
"New game" he said "first one to break away pays for ice cream"
He leaned in and kissed you then
His lips soft and gentle on yours, then harder and needier like he'd been waiting his whole life to do this -he had
He'd wrapped his arm around your waist and pulled your body towards him, pressing it against his, filling any space that had been left between you two
You had your hands laced behind his neck, your fingers running through his sun bleached curls, trying to pull him impossibly closer
You couldn't breathe
But this was a game you weren't going to loose again

false prophets - j.f
Tumblr media
summary: request
jeremiah fisher x reader
every day that jeremiah wakes up and hears y/n talks about some guy is another day that he wants to drown in the ocean. he’s sick and tired of waking up feeling like she’ll never want him, and that he’ll never be good enough for her. all the years she’s been coming to the beach house have been perfect, besides his burning affection toward her.
his dreams, day and night, consist of her, and then she haunts him the next morning. he hopes his acting skill are good enough to hide the feelings behind his fraudulent smile. unfortunately for him, it’s almost clear to everyone. everyone but y/n. he vents to steven almost daily, and conrad knows his brother like the back of his hand. jeremiah is hard to read sometimes, but when it comes to y/n, he’s like glass.
y/n is the furthest thing from oblivion, but everyone is completely confused as to how she hasn’t seen jeremiah’s feelings for her. it feels so one sided to her. their thoughts mirror each other. she’s a strong believer that jeremiah would never want her. he goes for people completely different, and the self-hatred just bounces back when she sees him with another. all of her friends know they’re going to end up together one way or another, but their stubbornness is the wall between them.
their interactions have become painfully awkward as jeremiah just feels sick when she talks about someone else. it’s the same with her, just wanting to run away when he talks about another girl he met at a party. and when the other gets their heart broken, they know the other could mend it back together.
the time was getting later and later, and jeremiah watched y/n empty another drink. he took turns dancing with random people, hoping to maybe get her eyes on him. he only thought about her when he was with another girl. when his hands connected with someone else, he pictured y/n.
y/n was practically torturing herself by eyeing him the whole night. it was hell, the mix of blaring music and neon lighting. when her eyes landed on a new person with him, she just grabbed yet another drink. something about the sight made her blood boil up. it was only her and jeremiah in the room at this point. everyone else was just for decoration as she stared him down.
she looked over at a boy in the corner, immediately recognizing him as someone jeremiah hates. it’s not clear why, but jeremiah gets so irked by this guy. y/n knows it’s a perfect opportunity to retort back at jeremiah. so, she walks over with the can in her hand, dripping condensation onto her knuckles.
it doesn’t take very long for jeremiah to notice the flirty language. she’s basically leaning on him, giggling and batting her lashes the way guys around cousins enjoy. the smirk on the guys face made that obvious, and his hand on her side made jeremiah shiver. jeremiah hated seeing him touching her in all the places he wishes he could.
it felt like someone had be lit, ready to explode. he couldn’t stop himself from storming over, grabbing y/n’s hand and pulling her away. he saw the annoyed look on her face, but somehow she didn’t look angry. some part of her face came across as if she had accomplished something.
“what the hell?” she complains and jeremiah can hear the drunkenness in her words.
“y/n, you can’t possible have been interested in him,” he rolls his eyes.
“the world doesn’t revolve around you and your likes, jere,” she says. “you don’t control my life.”
“well, maybe i should! i know he’s not good for you and i don’t know why you’re so blind to realize it.”
“are you serious?” y/n laughs sarcastically. “i’m the blind one?”
“you’re drunk,” he speaks the two words harshly, leaving y/n’s nose to scrunch.
“so what? i was having a decent night for once and you pulled me away from a guy.”
“yeah, why do you think i did that?” he shouts. “i couldn’t stand watching him run his hands all over you and i hate this fucking act i have.”
y/n tries to focus her blurry eyes on him, absorbing each word he said to her. “what act?”
the powder keg exploded inside of jeremiah, y/n being the spark. he took broad steps toward her, grabbing her head gently and pulling her lips against his. he immediately was confronted with the taste of alcohol on her lips, then more on her tongue. the way her hands moved up to his arm sent electricity through his veins. the loads of perfume she put on hit his nose as it mixed with the smell of his cologne. he wishes he could see her beautiful face, but with his eyes shut, he takes in the glory of kissing her.
when he pulls away, y/n sighs lightly. she didn’t want it to stop. “that act,” he tells her. “i’ve been in love with you for years and if i waited any more it would’ve killed me.”
in response, y/n just starts kissing him again, their tongues against each other and light huffing from them. jeremiah barely knew what to do with his hands. he’s dreamt about being in this position for as long as he can remember, but he hardly recalls anything from the distraction of y/n.
her lips were soft on his, but her grip on him was aggressive and claiming. her hands floated up to his scalp without stopping the kiss. jeremiah gently guided them to his car, leaning her against the door as he took in every moment that y/n was giving him. when she’s the next to pull away, she smiles at him, gazing into his blue irises. “i’ve only had eyes for you, jeremiah.”
“good,” he grins. “i’m still pissed that you were hitting on the worst person i know.”
he leans in again to kiss her, making y/n chuckle into the air. “stay mad,” she jokes.

CHAPTER 2: SUMMER DRESS
Tumblr media
Jeremiah fisher x fem!reader
(Summary: y/n and belly say yes to the deb invite and belly gets invited on her first date)
(Warnings: angst)
(Words: 2986)
* ・゚☆ 。・ * ・゚★ 。・ * ・゚☆ * ・゚☆ 。
“Who was that guy you were with at the bonfire?” I ask smirking at belly as she walks into my room. I’m sitting at the vanity getting ready for the day as she sits on the bed next to be.
“His name is cam.” She blushes.
“Do we like, like cam?” I push turning to her squinting my eyes.
“I- I don’t know? What about the was Jeremiah was being all flirty with you during the swim at the beach.”
“He was NOT!” I gasp.
“Yes he was.” she defends and I roll my eyes.
“Okay okay drop it. Let’s go eat. Plus have you decided on the deb stuff?” I say as we get up and head downstairs.
“Yeah I think I’m gonna do it.” She says and I smile.
“Me too. We can be all pretty in dresses together.” I squeal.
“Let’s tell Susannah.” She says and we go find her.
“Susannah, me and y/n are gonna do the deb thing.” Belly says.
“Oh, my God! Belly and y/n is gonna be a debutante.” Susannah says loudly for my mom and Laurel to hear. Causing everyone else to give their opinion as well.
“It's really not that big of a deal.” I say.
“I'm sorry. Like, Belly? Like, my sister? Like, that thing right there?” Steven says pointing at belly.
“Shut up, cretin.” Belly defends.
“Belly is smokin. You’re just jealous.” I say giving him a glare causing her to blush.
“Okay, this is gonna be so much fun. Just you wait. There is, uh... there's the tea, the auction, the ball, of course, the rehearsal. I got to write this down.” Susannah gasps. “We need to go shopping.”
“This sounds so fun!” My mom says coming up to me and fixing the hair around my face.
“This sounds... expensive.” Laurel says concerned.
“Oh, don't worry, Laur. It's on me. It was my idea after all, and we still need to style you for your book party, so...” Susannah says reassuring her. She places an arm around both our moms waists. They’re so cute.
“Belly, are you sure you want to do this? It doesn't seem very you.” Laurel asks making sure.
“It's not.” Conrad says and we all turn to him. Belly’s face drops.
“Conrad, could you please be a little more supportive? Now, which one of you is gonna be Belly's escort to the ball?” Susannah enquires.
“Not me. I went last year.” Conrad says.
“Yeah, and I swore off balls.” I wanted to laugh but I couldn’t help making a disappointed face at Jeres comment. But Steven laughed for me anyways.
“The dances, dude.” Jere says to him laughing back.
“Wow, guys. Stop fighting over us. Plus, I'm not going with either of you. I am going to find my own date. Wikipedia says debutante balls require instruction in morals and social etiquette.” She says giving appointed look to the boys. She rests her head on my shoulder.
“I'm going for a swim.” Conrad says leaving the room.
“She could use some etiquette.” Steven says and I throw a towel at him.
“Yeah. No offense, Beck, but I don't feel like a country club is the best place to teach the girls about morals.” Laurel says.
“Laur, times have changed. There's a girl debbing this season, and she's bringing her girlfriend as her escort, and the club was fine with it.” Susannah defends.
“Oh that’s great.” My mom says.
“How very progressive of them.” Laurel rolls her eyes.
“Here you are, girls.” Jere says and gives us some eggs he was cooking.
“Thanks jere.” I smile and he gives a soft one in return.
“Well, hurry up! We have shopping to do.” Susannah says.
“It's not like I was getting any work done anyway.” Laurel says with a chuckle.
“Come on laur it’ll be fun.” My mom says shaking her shoulders softly.
We finish up our food and head to the dress shop.
It was a long process but it was nice. It felt like old times. Being a little kid playing dress up. And the moms loved the fashion show.
We finally picked out are dresses and went home to get ready for an introduction tea time thing for the debs at the country club.
Laurel took us and she pulled belly aside as we got out of the car.
“Belly? I just want you to know that if you decide you hate it or if the girls are mean or even if the food is bad, you can text me. I promise I won't say "I told you so."” She says. I can tell she’s really worried for belly.
“I'll be fine.” She reassures.
“Humor me? Use our code phrase, and I'll be right there.”
“Mom.”
“You remember it from when you were little, right?”
“Lemon Jelly Belly.”
“Lemon Jelly Belly.Have fun.” She says. “Y/n take care of our girl okay.” Laurel says and I nod.
“Don’t worry laur. Nothing will happen.” And with that she drove off leaving us to walk in. As where walking I see Jeremiah so I run up to him waving my hand. Belly following suit.
“Hey. Jeremiah.”
“Oh, my God. Uh, Y/n, belly. Wow. I didn't even recognize you guys.” He says looking me up and down. The feeling of his eyes lingering driving me crazy.
“These fascinators are so goofy lookin.” I say messing with the mesh that’s hanging over my eyes.
“Tell me the truth. Um, do we look foolish?” Belly asks.
“Um... Uh, no, y-you guys look good. You look good.” He laughs. Reaching out to mess with the mesh himself.
“Um, let me walk you over.” He smiles.
“Hey y/n I need to use the restroom. I’ll meet you in there okay.” She says giving me a small wink.
“What?” I say turning to her with panicked eyes.
“Nothing. Uh, just go with Jeremiah.” She smiles.
“I- okay. Sure.” I say and turn to him with a grin and we start walking. Slow enough so belly could catch up.
“You know…They have strawberry, raspberry, raspberry type cookies. Oh, they're to die for.” He giggles changing the subject. Be he couldn’t last long before bringing the fascinator up again.
“Okay. I-I still never thought I'd see the day where you were wearing a fascinator.” He laughs.
“Oh really.” I say raising my eyebrows.
“You’ve always been beautiful.” He says and my heart skips a beat.
“But you never seemed like the deb type. You’ve got this reckless kinda beauty.” He muses messing with my hair. He smiles down at me. Softly. The skin on my cheeks felt hot. Jeremiah in all the years I’ve know him has been flirty. But he flirts with everyone. So it was nothing special when he did it with me. But this time it felt… more. The way he was looking at me. The way he spoke. I was probably psyching myself out. But I couldn’t help feeling flustered by his comments.
“Jeremiah.” A woman interrupts as belly meets up with us.
“Paige.” He responds.
“Where's your shirt?” She says annoyed.
“It's always a pleasure.” He grins sass in his voice.
“Mm-hmm.” She muses.
“This is Belly. I mean, uh, Isabel Conklin, and Y/n Rowe, the young women my mom told you about.” He says poking me in the side. I slap his hand away.
“They’re late.” She says.
“I-I-I'm so sorry.” Belly apologizes.
“You're at table two.” She says ignoring her.
“Are those those little Brie and fig jam sandwiches with the prosciutto?” Jere interrupts.
“Don't you dare. Okay. Those are for the girls.” She warns him walking away but he quickly grabs one from the table.
“Jeremiah, those are for the girls!”she complains.
“Just-just one. Knock 'em dead.” He says and dashes off.
“Oh, my God. That's the girl Conrad was kissing at the bonfire. And that's the girl Steven was with. Ugh. FML.” Belly whispers to me before we sit down.
“Hi.” We all say to each other quietly. I could tell the girls were scanning us down.
We all quickly introduced ourselves.
“Is that from the other night?” Shayla asks belly. Pointing to the bruise on her cheek.
“Yeah.”
“Here, let me fix it. I think we're good. Yeah?” She says taking out some concealer and applying it to her face. Shayla seemed nice.
“Thank you.” Belly smiles.
“I told my mom the only way I would do this is if I could bring my girlfriend, 'cause I thought it would be a deal killer, but the club has been surprisingly chill about the whole thing.” One girl says
“I'm honestly shocked.” Another girl says.
“Yeah. Literally, Dara, I was expecting a conversion camp to spring out of the bushes. No. Lesbians and debutantes are, like, a completely juxtaposing idea.”
“Opposites.”
“Yeah, but Cousins likes to pretend to be woke.”
“Mm-hmm. Trust me. My family deals with it constantly. The things we do for college applications. It's insane. Don't worry, Marisa. You'll get in everywhere. Wait. Where are you applying?” She says turning to another girl named Gigi.
“You know, the usual. Every Ivy minus Cornell. Mm-hmm. Ithaca is so bleak.”
“I know. What about you?” Shayla says turning to belly
“Oh, Belly's only a sophomore. Right? I think that's what Conrad told me.” Nichole interrupts.
“Yeah, I-I'll be a junior in the fall.” Belly responds.
“So, is this your first summer here in Cousins?” She asks us both.
“No, we’ve been coming here for our entire lives.” I say.
“Yeah, she's, like, family friends with Conrad and Jeremiah. Uh, so are you and Jeremiah, like, a-a thing, or are you gonna take him to the ball? Um...” Gigi ask me.
“Oh, my God, back off, Geeg.” Nichole says
“It was a question.”
“They're, like, basically related, okay?” Says Nichole.
“You have nothing to worry about.” I smile trying not to start anything.
“I'm not worried.” Gigi defends.
“Yeah, sure. Keep telling yourself that, babe. Gigi has had this thing for Jeremiah... Ever since he got abs?Pun intended. Absolutely.” She says but Gigi makes a face.
“Relax. I'm not into Jeremiah Fisher. Yeah, and you’re noticing his abs?” Gigi concerns.
“Ooh. No. She's too busy eye-fucking the waiter.” Another girl says. I turn and see Steven causing me and belly to make a face of disgust.
“Dude, that's Belly's brother.” Nichole says.
“Oh, my God. Really? Oh, that's gross.” Gigi says.
“So, what's it like to live with Jeremiah and Conrad?” She continues.
“Yeah. Conrad's so mysterious.”shayla says but we’re all cut off by Paige.
“Hello, debutantes. A few small housekeeping bits I'd like to go over. We have a lot to look forward to this season. Now, I understand some of you might think that debbing is outdated. It's something you're doing to appease your families. But the Cousins Debutante Ball is a part of history. Venerated, yet ever evolving, it's a tradition you'll someday pass on to your own daughters. It's a formal marking of this passage of time between your teenage years and your adulthood. One ends, and the other begins. It's a journey generations of women before you have taken. Women who you can learn from and who can inspire you.” She says catching our attention.
“Debs, at each table is a big sister who will guide you through the season. So, please introduce yourselves. “ she continues and we turn back to each other. Belly got Nichole and I got Shayla. I was excited but I felt a little bad for belly since Nichole was all over Conrad.
When it was all over I noticed belly talking to the Sam guy from the bonfire, cam. She says goodbye looking all giddy and walk over to me.
“What’s got you all happy.” I smile.
“I’ve got a date.” She says softly and my eyes widen.
“NO WAY! Bells I’m so happy for you.” I exclaim and we do a little happy dance before we get picked up by my mom.
“Hey girls.” She smiles rolling down the window.
“Hey Kate.” belly says climbing in the backseat as I get in the front.
“What’s got you girls so happy.” She says pulling away.
“Bells has a date.” I smile and she gasp.
“Aww, are baby’s all grown up.” She coos causing belly to laugh.
“Don’t be so dramatic.” Belly says.
When we get home me and belly talk about how excited she is. And a few hours later I help her get ready. When she heads downstairs I stay in my room digging through my cd’s looking for one to put on when Jere walks in a little while later.
“Hey we’re going to the drive in. Wanna come?” He asks and I squint my eyes.
“Isn’t that where belly’s date is.” I question. He just squints his eyes back at me. Making fun of my pout.
“It has no correlation, we’re just bored.” He says.
“Fine, but you boys better leave her alone. She not that much younger than us.” I say grabbing my boots and sliding them on.
“I promise.” He says and we go down getting everyone to pile in the car.
We actually watch the movie for a little bit but I can tell the guys are antsy. When Steven buys the car in drive I get nervous. He pulls up right next to them and I sigh.
“God you guys suck.” I say and get out of the car.
“Y/n come on. I’m sorry.” Jere wines.
“Why can’t you guys just leave her alone.”
“What the hell do you think you're doing?!” Belly says seeing the guys.
“Uh, just catching the end of our favorite movie.” Steven says.
“I mean... You have no right! You have to go!” Belly says annoyed.
“Guys come on let’s go.” I complain.
“Oh, Belly, relax. We-we were just joking around.” Steven says with a laugh.
“Steven, if you don't leave, I swear to God I will send everyone in this car your Dramione fanfic.” Belly says and he quickly shuts up.
“You wouldn't.”
“Oh, he spent an entire chapter talking about Draco's wand.”
“Bro.” Conrad says.
“Oh, my God. Steven, come on. You know, don't be embarrassed, man. Draco's hot.” Jere says and I slam my palm to my face. This is not the time.
“Drop it. Drop it. Hey, seriously?” Steven defends.
“Please leave.” She begs.
“All right, let's go, guys.” I say.
“What? Wait. What? Are you kidding me?” Steven says shocked.
“Steven, drive the car.” I say.
“You were the one who wanted to come, Conrad.” Steven continues.
“Just drive.” I yell and get back in the car.
“Drop me off at home I’m done for the night.” I say pissed off and the guys (besides Steven, who’s driving) look to me.
“Come on y/n, we’re sorry.” Jeremiah says and I glare at him.
“You promised we wouldn’t do that.” I say my voice cracking.
“What if she’s mad at me that I was there too. Did you think of that. I should have known you guys would have done this. She’s not a little girl anymore you can’t do this stuff.” I say getting emotional. I didn’t like to get that way in front of them. But I was mad but more at myself for trusting them and going.
“God I’m an idiot.” I sigh. “I wouldn’t have gone.” I say whiling my eyes getting glittery eyeshadow and mascara on my hand.
“Y/n I’m so sorry.” Jere says trying to put a hand on my leg to comfort me. But I just turn away towards the window.
“Just drop it for now.” I say. I just hope she isn’t mad at me.
When I get home I jump out of the car and rush inside trying to go to my room when the moms stop me.
“Baby what’s wrong?” My mom says.
“Nothing I’m just really tired.” I say and Susannah comes over.
“You can talk to us.” She says and Laurel nods.
“I’m just really worried belly’s gonna be upset with me.” I say and then explain to them what happened.
“Ugh I’m gonna kill those boys.” Susannah says.
“Your belly’s best friend y/n. And you stood up for her. She’ll understand.” Laurel says.
“You don’t have to hide this stuff from us.” My mom says and I rest my head on her shoulder.
“I love you guys.” I say and they all give me a group hug before I head upstairs to shower and get ready for bed.
Around and hour or two later I hear fighting downstairs. It was Conrad and belly. They were arguing. She quickly ran upstairs and saw me. I was about to start apologizing profusely when she jumps into my arms for a hug. Starting to cry.
“Bells it’s okay he’s just being a jerk.” I say.
“It just sucks you know. He’s being so different from last summer.” She says and we go to my room and lay down on the bed.
“Yeah I don’t know what’s wrong with him.” I say. It’s quiet for a second so I turn and look at her.
“Hey I’m really sorry about tonight. I wouldn’t have gone if they hadn’t promised me they wouldn’t do anything. I swear.” I say and she looks at me. And she gives a smile.
“I know. You would never do anything like that to me.” She says and pulls me in for a hug. Well… more like a cuddle. And we fell asleep talking about how she still had a good time with cam. It was nice to know her night wasn’t totally screwed up. It made me feel a lot better. But I was dreading the morning.
Cause Jeremiah fisher is relentless when he wants forgiveness.

the ending (part 1)
Tumblr media
Summary: This is how I imagine the story should end if there was a season 4 and/or book 4 or expanded epilogue to the books. This is taking place a couple years after Belly and Conrad's wedding and it is kind of a mix of the show and the books with some extra added things. It's based on this.
Warnings: none that I can think of, except this is basically one giant spoiler, if you have not read the books, I would recommend proceeding with caution because there are SPOILERS AHEAD. otherwise this is just overloaded with cuteness and all the Belly and Conrad married couple content the books didn't give us.
Word Count: 1783
Sunlight streams through the windows, illuminating the whole house in a way the sun only does in the summer. Everything is ready, and everyone will be here soon. I take one last walk around the house, making sure everything is in its place, that everything is perfect. It has to be perfect, just like Susannah would have done it. There's vases of blue hydrangeas that Conrad helped me cut from the bushes outside scattered throughout the house, and the kitchen is stocked with cereal.
I look up at the pictures on the mantle, Conrad and I on our wedding day; Conrad with Jere and Steven; Taylor and I; a group photo of all of us and Laurel; one of Con, Susie and I on the day Susie was born; and a Fisher family Christmas portrait that Conrad absolutely hates; and in the center, a shot of Susannah and all of us kids from the last summer we spent with her here. I smile, reaching up to gently touch the frame with my fingertips. Susannah would be so happy we're having a big Fisher-Conklin family summer at the summer house again.
I open the sliding door and step out onto the back deck, looking out at the ocean and feeling the sun warm on my face. It's warm but not too warm out, and the sky is clear and blue. A perfect Cousins beach day.
"It's a perfect Cousins beach day," Conrad says as he comes outside behind me, shutting the door very carefully and quietly.
"Yeah," I laugh, looking over at him fondly. "It's like you just read my mind."
He chuckles and then he's silent for a long moment as he takes in the view in front of us and the sunshine. "It feels like my Mom is here," He says softly, and I can see the sadness momentarily flicker in his eyes.
I lean towards him, putting my arms around him gently. "Susannah would never miss a summer in Cousins."
"No," He smiles, burying his head in the space between my shoulder and neck, "she wouldn't."
I'm suddenly aware of another person who is also, at this moment, missing. "Con, where's Susie? Did you check on her?"
"She's sleepin' like a baby, Belly," Conrad replies, with that smirk on his face that has always driven me crazy. "She timed her nap perfectly, she should be wide awake and well rested by the time everyone gets here."
"I should go get her ready. Knowing my mother, she will be here exactly on time," I tell him, starting to untangle myself from his embrace. I would stay in his arms forever if it was up to me.
He laughs, thinking this over. "Oh yeah, Laur will definitely be on time. Jere on the other hand, will absolutely be late. Him and Steven both." He turns to watch me open the door and head back inside. "Do you need help with Suz?"
"No, I've got it under control Con. Can you just do one last check and make sure we didn't forget anything?" I ask him.
"We already checked, like, four times, Bel, but you know I'll do anything for you," He can't keep the smile off his face as he follows me inside, stopping to kiss me for a moment, soft and slow. He smiles against my lips before he pulls away slowly and reaches out to push my hair out of my face and tuck it behind my ear, letting his thumb brush against my cheek gently. "I love you."
Hearing Conrad Fisher say those words to me will never get old. Even after all these years, I still get butterflies and blush like a little girl every time he says it.
"I love you too," I smile at him, stealing one last kiss. It feels like getting the last word, getting the last kiss before I go upstairs. I have to kiss the smirk off his face, smooth out his lips, remind him that he's mine. Even though I know no matter how many times I kiss that smirk away it always comes back.
Upstairs, Susie is laying in her crib, just waking up. When she sees me she sits up, reaching out towards the bars on the side of the crib. Her blue eyes open wide, looking up at me and daring me to take longer than five seconds to pick her up. She has her father's eyes and his attitude. It takes me longer than five seconds to cross the nursery, so she pulls herself up, shaking the bars and making fussy, grumpy baby noises, devolving into crying. "Ma-ma!"
"Mama's got you, Susie," I say, lifting her out of the crib and holding her close to me, her little head resting on my shoulder. I rock her gently to soothe her, and her fussing slowly calms down. "I know, I know, it's hard to be a baby."
I lay her down on the changing table and play peekaboo with my hands, earning a smile and the sweetest little laughter from her. As I change her diaper and get her dressed in the pretty little baby sundress I picked out for her to wear today, I can hear quiet thumps and thuds from Conrad downstairs. He's opening and closing cabinets and doors, and moving things around. I smile to myself, knowing that despite him teasing me, he really is doing a final check. I know he wants this summer to be just as perfect as I do. Susie was born at the very end of last summer, so this is the first summer of her life, her first summer in Cousins. I know she won't remember it, but I want it to be special for her anyway, just like Susannah would have.
Susannah would be so happy that there's another little girl in the family, a Fisher girl. She'd be even happier to know that the nursery is in my old room, the one that was once Susannah's childhood bedroom. And she'd be absolutely thrilled that Conrad and I have made the summer house our home. It's my childhood dream come true. For me, this house has always been my home. Living here is like an endless summer in some ways, although every season in Cousins has its charm, especially winter. Waking up every day in this house with Conrad Fisher, I've never felt more at home.
I carry Susie downstairs, now that she's dressed and freshened up. Conrad is in the living room, refolding a blanket and fluffing up pillows on the couch, and his face lights up and breaks into a smile the second I walk in. "There's my girls," He smiles, giving me a quick peck on the lips and taking Susie into his arms. "Look at my pretty baby, all dressed up," He coos to her.
"She's all ready for her first summer," I say, smiling at the baby, "aren't you, pretty girl? All your favorite people are going to be here any minute."
"Yeah, you're so excited to see Uncle Stevie and Uncle Jere, aren't you?" Conrad says, still cooing in his baby-talking voice. "And Grandma Laur-" He's cut off by the sound of a car door shutting outside, and we hurry over to the door together to peek out the window, and speak of the devil, my mother is smiling and carrying some of her bags to the porch. When we open the door, my mother is standing there beaming at us. I don't think I've seen her this happy in a long time.
"Hi Laur! We're so happy you're here," Conrad smiles sincerely at her, moving in for a somewhat awkward hug since the baby is still in his arms. Susie is smiling wide at her, showing off her four little teeth.
I hug her next, and she squeezes me tight. "Belly, it's so good to see you. You're glowing, bean."
"Thanks Mom," I smile at her. "Now put your bags down and make yourself at home. Conrad will help you carry your things in."
"I'm holding the baby though, so I don't know if I can," He says teasingly, smirking. I know he was going to do it anyway, without anyone ever having to ask; he's still the same old Conrad who is all about duty and doing the right thing. But he likes to joke and tease, even when he's fooling no one. Or at least not fooling me.
"Don't worry, I'll take her off your hands, Connie," my mother smirks right back at him, reaching out and taking the baby into her arms.
Conrad chuckles and calls out, "Thank you, Laur!" as he walks toward the door to carry her bags in just like I knew he would from the beginning.
I look back over at my mom and smile. She's smiling at Susie and Susie is smiling right back at her, listening wide-eyed to everything my mother is saying to her. "I'm so glad you're here, Mom," I say to her.
"Me too," She smiles, "I wouldn't miss Susie's first summer in Cousins for the world. Susannah would never let that happen." She looks at Susie, who lets out a little laugh. "She would have loved you, Susannah Laurel Fisher."
Conrad comes back in then, arms full of my mothers bags and sets them down with a thump. "Geez Laurel, did you pack your entire house?" He jokes.
"No, I just packed the essentials, plus I stocked up on all the good bulk stuff at Costco. We should have everything-" My mom looks at all her bags as if she's remembering something. "Oh shoot, I completely forgot my diet Coke."
"Don't worry Laur, we've got you covered. We made sure to get some for you," Conrad grins at her.
"You must have had to drive so far to find it. I used to always complain to Susannah about how they don't sell it here," My mom says.
"Oh it was no problem. We wanted to make sure we had everything for everyone," Conrad assures her. "Speaking of everyone, the others should be here any minute now."
As if on cue, we hear a car pulling up outside. When we all move towards the door to peek out, we see Steven emerging from his car with a big grin on his face.
I guess now I know how the boys felt at the start of every summer, waiting for us to arrive. This is the hardest part, all the nerves and anticipation and waiting. Thank goodness the waiting will be over soon. Jeremiah and Taylor shouldn't be far behind Steven, and once they get here the summer can officially begin.
