Music of Blindspot
Music of Blindspot 2x16 - Evil Did I Dwell, Lewd Did I Live
Standard disclaimer: all music is composed by Blake Neely and Sherri Chung; I’m getting nothing out of this except an excuse to re-watch with my own little auditory memory mini-game. Please don’t do anything shady with the YouTube links; I don’t want to get the OPs in trouble or we could lose access to this awesome content. I've linked to the original artists wherever possible. Also note that linked music recycled from season 1 was released on an official soundtrack, which is still purchasable on iTunes etc. And it’s good to support the things we love! :D
~~~~~
The party at Weller's place opens with Love as a Weapon by Little Scream (aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer) - that's the same song from the start of the cursed party in 2x08. Anyone who's curious can find the lyrics in the 2x08 post here. I think someone on staff must be a fan, or maybe friends (like MG and many of the others on the show, she's Canadian...ish. Born in USA but started recording in Canada) - as mentioned in that other post she's also the female vocalist for the cover songs recorded for 5x11. Or, if you want to play it in canon, then we must conclude that Weller's record collection is all for show, because apparently he only listens to one song. xD
Weller finds Jane in the nursery to a variation on Pregnant from 2x02. There's another version of the song in 2x04 (Accepting His Role). The thematic link between Kurt/Allie scenes and the empty nursery is obvious; one thing I don't know off the top of my head but I will reallllllly be looking out for next season is if any element of this theme carries over into any of Bee's scenes.
(Consider this sentence a placeholder/"note to self" for the fact that I have the track for when they're on the ftp site/talking to Cade on the phone but I can't remember what other episode it's from and therefore can't find it. 🙈)
Nas leaves the plaza and enters the hospital - a second location - to a tune that includes part of Taken from 2x03 (the Jeffrey Kantor mission) - specifically the part where the guy comes to get Jane (who's just woken up in Sandstorm Manor) and takes her to a second location in the house to meet with Shepherd and Roman.
When Weller lets slip that they need the goons in the forest alive and the one guy murder/suicides his squad, they've used Why Did You Take Her from 2x04 - when Roman brings the bloodbath truck with not enough explosives in it, and Shepherd demands to know why he took Jane to Lake Aurora. There's not really a very clear thematic link, although Roman does talk a bit in the 2x04 scene about sacrificing for the cause.
The ending montage - Patterson having the tooth pulled, Jane checking in on Roman, Jane going to Oliver's place, Tasha going to Weller's to talk about Reade, and Jane and Oliver getting drugged - is all set to an edit of High Rise by Cross Record.
Little Scream shares new single ‘Disco Ball’ from forthcoming album
With Speed Queen being released a little over a month from today, Montreal’s Little Scream (a.k.a. Laurel Sprengelmeyer) is sharing another slice from the forthcoming album. ‘Disco Ball’ arrives alongside a short storyabout the song’s creation.
“Disco Ball’ is one of the songs that was born musically on the country road after I bought the Flying V guitar. It incorporates many of the observations from being on the road with the last album, feeling a sense of recognition in the down-and-outness of the places we visited. Identifying with that sense of having been duped for following your dreams in every closed shop window we passed. Thinking about how that book The Secret must be responsible for a countable percentage of the subprime mortgage crisis. Thinking about struggling as a musician, but having that be the thing that allows me to make a disco ball out of all the smashed mirrors of my past. Taking all of this and thinking about how to make an anthem of hope for times when you feel you have nothing."
Music of Blindspot
The Music of Blindspot 2x08 - We Fight Deaths on Thick Lone Waters
Good day to everything and everyone except the baby shower scene and whatever beautiful asshole selected Emma Ruth Rundle for it! Seriously, if the content itself wasn't angsty enough for you, look no further than the lyrics (conveniently transcribed below!) for all the breaking your masochistic heart desires!
Blah blah, focus on commentary, blah blah, I have no fricken clue what I'm doing I'm genuinely just winging it with zero expertise and +10 to enthusiasm. Also lyrics are transcribed by me so if you spot mistakes in them or anything else, let me know.
Small text denotes scenes I don't have specific recordings for and have decided are not particularly noteworthy as musical connections to other points in the series.
As always, all music is composed by Blake Neely and Sherri Chung; I'm getting nothing out of this except an excuse to re-watch with my own little "name that track" memory mini-game. Please don't do anything shady with the YouTube links; I've linked the original artists wherever possible but for other things I don't want to get the OPs in trouble or we could lose access to this awesome content. Thank you!
Post is behind a cut, because it's long and I'll be referring to specific scenes so... spoilers!
~~~~~
Outside and searching the summit/SIOC and Weitz
Main Theme - Same as always. At this point I'm mostly including it as a reference point for where we are in the episode. Officially released and purchasable on the Season 1 OST; can be heard in "Who is Jane Doe?/Main Theme" starting at approx 2:20. https://youtu.be/jdpjmqbUd-U?t=140
Interrogations/Lynn's story/Clive's story
"Throw the knife out!"/Lynn's story continued/Clive's story continued/SIOC/Finding Jane/SIOC
The lab & Jane's story/Lynn's admissions/Patterson's discovery and Lynn coming clean/"We gotta return the knife"/"The auction is going live"
Weller is a unicorn and we need to win the auction/Meeting Marconi/Jane and Weitz/The buyers are here - Chen and Weller escape
Nas and the team arriving - yeah I have this music somewhere but heck if I know where. I'm writing this down so I can edit and add it if I find it later.
Weller's gone after Marconi/Marconi arrested/Weitz vs Nas/Nas and Patterson
Weller inviting Jane to the party - This scene is a snippet of Worth It (https://youtu.be/-mZ1_eIRmDQ) from S1 (buy it on the official soundtrack!). This is the same piece of music that Weller confronted Mayfair to in the hospital after the police bodycam blackmail case in 1x08. That scene has a lot of Mayfair/Jane parallels (especially the dialogue about Daylight vs what Jane says about Sandstorm immediately after the polygraph in 2x01*), but I think the key parallel here is that in both cases Weller is reaching out to someone he has recently been very grouchy and rude to. Edit - Jane also asked Weller why he hasn't forgiven his father during the supersoldier case (1x12) to this tune, and he answered with a bit of dialogue that might be considered vaguely parallel: "He was a terrible father [...] Me being wrong about one night doesn't change any of that."
The Baby Shower - The first song is Love as a Weapon by Little Scream (https://youtu.be/Tq4Vw4MB6eA), aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer. If that name seems familiar it's possibly because she was the female vocalist brought in for the little collective that recorded the two cover songs for 5x11. You can, of course, hear her most clearly at the opening of that episode. (If you are a new fan and have not finished the series, I VERY STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT SKIP AHEAD OR TRY TO LOOK IT UP) This song was the first single from her album Cult Following, it debuted in the first half of 2016 so no questions on the timing of the choice there.
There's an instrumental interlude in Weller's bedroom which seems to be based off the theme I am pretending doesn't exist because I prefer to pretend that the coupling the melody is for never occurred.
The second baby shower song is the real kick in the proverbial balls. Beginning with cake time: We Are All Ghosts by Emma Ruth Rundle (https://youtu.be/gnUu57TlGzA). I've said before and will absolutely say again that this show has a wonderful, terrible habit of picking songs where not only the sound but the lyrics match the situation, and this is... well. Read the lyrics below.
Roman's plea - it's time for Phase 2 (The music here is a tangled mess of all sorts of themes that I could probably tease apart but don't feel like it. The main one in any case is Torn Apart, which almost always indicates Jane's divided loyalties)
End theme - The usual, as usual. https://youtu.be/zh2PlvOWnTU
Love as a Weapon by Little Scream (lyrics)
I was putting on my raincoat when I saw myself again
I was thinkin 'bout how I felt when you fooled my heart again
When your love's not a shelter and you get caught in the rain
[The show omits the next few lines here]
You go looking for a lover to make you feel like a boy again
Using love as a weapon, better sharpen up your aim
You send it out as an arrow but it soon come back again
Said you know what you're doin but you don't really have a plan
[The show's edit resumes from here]
And now you're waitin' on your lover when you already got a man
Looking at your lover, gonna make yourself a freedom
Looking at your lover, gonna paint yourself a highway
Looking at your lover, and he's out there in the rain
Looking at your lover, gonna make myself, gonna make myself again
Wasn't like I was lookin' wasn't like I had it planned
But sometimes you get lucky and it falls right in your hands
So I took it to my sister cos I knew she'd understand [Reade is thanking Zapata to this line]
She said you know I'm just happy to see you so alive again
Gonna walk with conviction gonna be just like a man
Gonna take what I want to til I feel like a boy again
[Weller looks in the mirror]
Then I stop and I look and I see your face
And I tell myself that I won't ever be the same
Looking at your lover, gonna make yourself a freedom
Looking at your lover, gonna paint yourself a highway
[song fades out here in the show, and it's quite a long song so I'm stopping here too]
We Are All Ghosts by Emma Ruth Rundle (lyrics)
We looked a shadow of a man
From where we're standing
Which made us laugh and lift our hands
And say 'rise'
We knew our hearts were made of glass
Which comes from sand and
We let it slip throughout our hands
Into night
[the only emotional respite for using this song is that this is where Reade steps out and they had him and Freddie on the screen for the remaining lines instead of any of THAT SITUATION at the party]
Into the night [x3]
Let it be known that we are all ghosts
Could have stayed and loved you better
Let it be known I loved you most
Let us be brave
[the edit in the show ends here, but I've left the rest of the lyrics so I'm not the only one who has to suffer]
So if we take each other's bones
Into the graveyard
And lay our hand upon the stones
We will rise
Let it be known that we are all ghosts
Should have stayed and loved you better
Let it be known I loved you most
Let us be brave
You say 'rise'
Could have had a heartbeat just like mine
To rip and tear
Just say 'rise', you could have had a heartbeat just like mine, to rip and tear
Heartbeat, oh, heartbeat oh, to rip and tear, to rise
[etc. you get the idea :P]
*For interest's sake:
"We thought the benefits outweighed the cost. We were wrong. I never meant to put you in this situation." - Mayfair, 1x08
"I thought I was protecting you, all of you, by doing what they wanted. I was wrong." - Jane, 2x01
"I hope it was worth it."
"It has to be." - Weller/Mayfair, 1x08
"Mayfair's dead, Jane. There's no making this right."
"Then let's make them pay." - Weller/Jane, 2x01
